Its a little hard to find in the back of an office park, with little signage. We showed up here around 4:45 on a Saturday afternoon. It was so crowded, I literally could not get to the bar. I was standing for about 15 minutes, trying to get there, and finally just gave up. I walked out, thinking, these people need a better set up. I went over to D9, which is close and had a beer. Then, we decided to give it one more chance, and I"m so glad we did. When we came back around 5:30, that initial crowd was gone. Now the relatively small taproom was mostly empty. I walked straight to the bar and ordered my beer, found a seat, and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. I guess the moral is, don't make a snap judgement on first appearances. I really like how the tap room is set up. Very cozy feeling, with nice chairs, some big couches, also some high top tables, etc. It's small, but very nicely done. They have a wide selection of beer as well. They probably had 30 different taps. They had about 6 IPAs. I couldn't decide, so I went with a flight of all IPAs. They give you a generous 2.5 ounce pour on the flights. My favorite was the Ass Clown IPA, although every one on my flight was excellent. My wife decided to get a Bourbon barrel aged Pinor Noir. Yes, they have wine too. Later she got a 2.5 ounce pour of the saison. I have to say this is some of the best beer I've had. Around 6 pm they had someone playing live acoustic guitar in the already small taproom. But, it added more ambience to the experience. Overall, this is probably one of my favorite breweries. I will definitely be back, but living on the other side of Charlotte makes this a seriously long trek, past many other very good breweries, so not sure how often I can make it. However, I do highly recommend you stop by if in this area. Lastly, if its too crowded when you get there, go visit somewhere else and come back, you won't be disappointed. read more

Went here with some friends and they really enjoyed the assortment of beer. I personally was not a huge fan but I'm also not a big beer drinker. The atmosphere was this place is great! I love the way the place is decorated. On ceiling titles they list each of beers that they have "retired"/ changed out (not sure if "retired" is the appropriate word). But, overall they offer very unique beers and a wide variety. There also was a food truck parked right outside the brewery which was perfect because you could drink and eat. The only downside is that it's located in a business center plaza. I'm assuming the owner(s) wanted this to be more of an exclusive brewery that was recommended to other by word of mouth (I respect that!). But, this brewery is definitely one that people should visit when in the area. read more

Great little gem! I was so happy that this place exceeded my expectations. The atmosphere is phenomenal. It's very cozy and friendly. Many beers on tap, a lot of good ones to choose from. Why did it take me so long to make the drive up here? A small tap room that's got some cool decor - empty bottles that showcase the brew master's favorites, coffee bags, and lots of fun, funky furniture. Don't forget to look up - the ceiling tiles have popular AC beers written on them. Speaking of the beers, these guys are doing some gutsy stuff. Lots of interesting flavor combos. I loved the Orange Spice pale - the perfect summer beer. The IPA was nice, too. The chocolate dark cherry stout was not the sugar rush you would expect - lots of tart cherry with a hint of chocolate, something that would be great with a sweet cake or some kind of grilled meat. Equally good was the chocolate blueberry porter. This visit they also had a beet beer on tap. Yep, a beet beer. It had a very beet-y flavor, and a very slight earthiness to it. Not sure I could down a whole glass of it, but it had a phenomenal flavor and was an impressive undertaking for a true artisan session beer. I've rarely had such a hard time figuring out how to review a place. In pretty much every way, this place was the opposite of what we expected. BEER - 2 stars. I've only been here once, so maybe I had bad luck with the beers they had on tap at that time. There was a chocolate peppermint, an orange spice, a bourbon old ale and a citra hop on tap. The citra was great, but unfortunately the others were not. We talked to the brewer, who explained that they use a special yeast that gives the beer a very tart flavor, something we could not warm up to at all. We left half a beer, something we've never done before. They also seem to be a little on the expensive side compared to other microbreweries, since their five dollar pours come in a snifter (less than a pint). LOCATION - 4 stars. Although the taproom is very hard to find (go into the back of the lot, keep going even when you think you've stumbled into the loading zone of some obscure business, and there you are), it was really pleasant inside. Much more cozy by far than any brewery taproom I've seen. The people there that night looked to be mostly 35 to 50, no younger people, which surprised me. Decoration is awesome, pleasant lighting. BOTTOM LINE... Before I came, I had misgivings about the name of this place, somehow I doubted the seriousness of a business named Ass Clown. I still don't like the name. But after going there it seems they are very serious about what they do, but they may be going a little too crazy with their beer experiments. I really want to give them a second chance, but since this place is all the way out in Cornelius, I'm not sure if I'll risk driving that far when I'm not sure if I'll like the beer at all. Bacon Oyster Stout, Lemon Wheat IPA, Hemp IPA, Beet Nitro Stout, Cinnamon Hazelnut, Sea Salt Porter... all very interesting brews to say the least! Totally not for me. But pretty cool. I prefer super hoppy IPA's with a bite and they really do not have hoppy beers. Even though their Hemp IPA's slogan is "High on Hops" it still for me was not very hoppy at all. The rest of their beers had either to much citrus notes or was to sour/salty or both. For me it tasted a little off. However, the great thing is it is just my opinion. Because they were pretty busy and people seemed to like their brews. The location itself is on Bailey Road, a couple miles past 131 main. It is in a multi unit commercial building in the back of other buildings. I did not see any signage on the road, so I did drive buy it at first and had to make a uturn. Even with being in that type of building, the brewery itself was pretty cool. It was definitely a cool place to hang out at. They did have a food truck there in the parking lot. I was not a fan of the food, but still was good to see some type of food option there. read more

Small batch beers and rare varieties at that. For instance, a raspberry jalapeno sour beer. This is the sort of thing they seem to target but they also had a few interesting IPA and stout concoctions too. The vibe was a little strange while we were there, not sure why, maybe the lack of music or it was just a bit more quiet than the last place? Not sure but it didn't really detract from our experience. They have section to the left of the bar area where you make your order which I found a little odd but it seemed to work. The decor is beer based with bottles used as decoration and a shabby chic veneer of potato sacks and exposed barn wood. I found it to be pretty cozy. Bonus here is you can walk a few doors down for their location and visit District 9 Brewing too (if they are open). read more

My husband and I checked this place out one Saturday night after dinner. It was a full house at about 8pm. We sat at the bar but there are quite a few pub height tables and also a area with a few couches/chairs. It was nice and cozy not quite what you expect when you pull up outside. The staff was friendly and informative about beer selections. Beer was good! Excited this place is close to home. Ass clown has an eclectic ambience that matches their eclectic beers ! We had a wonderful time hanging out here Saturday night sampling their beer as well as their wine . I started off trying their Ass Clown IPA ; crisp with mild hops this is a beer I could sip on all night long. I also tried a sample of their hibiscus sea salt chili IPA - this is a great beer to warm you up on a chilly night. The flavors are not overwhelming but the chili is definitely felt on the end notes warming you from inside out. My BF tried the bourbon barrel Cabernet. This is a young wine but very drinkable and had an added complexity being aged in bourbon barrels. A lot of tables, couches and chairs are scattered around the interior so whether you want to kick back and relax or play some games there is a seat for you. We will definitely be back to try out more of their delicious brews ! read more

This place is great, and it's definitely worth the drive. The beers are truly unique (as one would expect from a place with such a name), and there are a lot of solid choices available. My wife and I got flights, and we really liked most of what we tried. Although there were a few misses, that's to be expected when such variety is available. The atmosphere here is great. For a smaller place, there's a lot of seating, nice cozy chairs, good live music, and free snacks. Service is great, even when the place gets packed. I was able to have the pleasure to try this fine libation at Brew Fest this past weekend. All I can say is get your butt out to Cornelius (or any of the bars that carry them ) and try some of this awesome beer! The Buttered Apple Pie Amber Ale is about as delicious as it sounds....they were out of it fairly quickly it was that tasty. Another fabulous beer I sampled was the orange spice Pale Ale ...great too! Just listen to these flavors Dark Cherry Chocolate Porter, Smoked Maple Syrup Black Ale, Vanilla Bean Chocolate Brown Ale, Apricot Seed Pale Ale... and the list goes on! Interesting to say the least, love the small hole in the wall atmosphere. If you are into beer tasting adventure, this is the joint. High tops, couches and a small bar decorated with eclectic nostalgia. Everyone is friendly and the conversation flows well with neighboring tables. Most are locals and regulars, and most everyone is on a first name basis. No food! Which sucks, they do have lots of free pretzels. The group beside me ordered Papa Johns :-) Overall a good time for the wife and I to pop out of the crazy house and have some time away from the kids......... On a recent business trip and I wanted to hit a few local breweries, after a Yelp search, I decided to visit Ass Clown, well...because of the name. So I dropped on it, and I was very impressed for a few reasons. First, the staff was engaged. When they weren't serving other customers they discussed the beers they had at great length and were very friendly. Even though it was my first time there, I felt like a regular. The beers were great. I have never been to a brewery that has had so many house-brewed beers on tap, there were well over 20. Most breweries I have been to have a ton of IPAs, and have one or (if I am lucky) two stouts or porters on tap. Here they had five! I planned on stopping in for one beer and ended up staying much longer and sampling all their stouts. I was not disappointed. The tap room is small, and intimate as compared to other places I have been, which was comforting. The decor was interesting and overall I had a great time. Out of the four breweries I visited in the area. This was the best. read more

Ass Clown is another place thats hard to find. Located in a row of industrial buildings. Outside theres not much to see.. There is plenty of parking. Inside is kind of small, yet super warm and inviting, with cool decoration everywhere. The bar and tap area is just awesome. Service is always fast and friendly. Samples of anything you want, flights, pints and growlers all ready to go, no problem. The place is always clean, as are the restrooms. They brew over 300 beers a year here at Ass Clown. So there is always something new on, along with some standby's. Awesome place all around. Stop in today and you will see why. read more

I love to come to the brewery. The tasting room is a warm and inviting place. They have live music on the weekends. The beers are quite unusual. You never know what you are going to find at Ass Clown. I love sour beers and I can always find one here. You are sure to meet all walks of life. The beer is pricey and not for everyone. It was the name that brought me in, but I was really impressed with the number of off-beat beers they are doing. I hate oysters, am not much of a stout guy, and haven't liked many of the bacon beers I've had, but when the bartender suggested I try the Bacon Oyster Stout, I really did like it. This is the brewery you want to go to if you're looking for a quieter night at a small brewery with lots of selection. The Charlotte breweries get very crowded and this is more the atmosphere I prefer. Growler and pint prices are very decent. They have amazing chili beers almost all the time. They also include just enough for the adventurous, like the bacon, oyster, stout. A rich, creamy, smokey stout that tastes better than you might imagine. Enjoy sitting at the personal bar in the low lit, rustic, pour room. Tables can also hold larger groups, or just move to one of the couches. Very friendly staff, who are more than willing to chat it up about the beer if you choose to. I would definitely put Ass Clown in the top brewery's in (outside of) charlotte. They close at 9, so get there with plenty of time to relax and enjoy a great selection of craft beer and free snyders pretzels. read more

Totally unimpressed. Although the beer is good and the bar has tv and games and really cool seating, the female bartenders really don't care unless you are a single cute guy under the age of 30. She spent more time doing her homework than she did looking up at the other clientele and clearly was genuinely uninterested in what was going on around her. I even asked to purchase a t shift to which I was informed they had absolutely none in my size. But then she was magically folding one before we left and it wasn't even offered to me. That was the point at which we de used to leave. I was very unimpressed. Some of the beers were great and some were not. The location is not easy to find. It is not on Bailey, you will get the dreaded "you have arrived" message while still on the road. You've got to turn in right before you get the message and the drive back into the lot and then turn left. Ashley was our bartender and she is incredible!!! The place was slammed and she kept everything moving while providing amazing service. I was blown away and wanted to hire her for my own store. Very impressive to watch anyone that talented. So, I'm not your typical reviewer, in the fact that I've used yelp plenty of times in the past several years, and have never written a review. I'm currently breaking that tradition, because Ass Clown Brewery set itself apart from what I expected. After visiting a separate brewery, the locals had steered me away from Ass Clown, but like many others, I decided to go, if only for the name. Instantly appreciating the see through wall showing the brewery behind the bar, I sat down and tried (as well as greatly enjoyed) the IPAs (especially the French oak IPA) on tap, and then worked my way to the darker beer. The bacon smoked oyster (I forget the exact name) was a beer to die for, and typically I despise flavored beers. The bartender, Ashley, was extremely friendly, and managed to hold a decent conversation with an antisocial individual such as myself. The guy working the brewery was extremely friendly as well, both of them would be getting raises if I had any say (and that's not just because they are from/fans-of Pittsburgh). For a Monday night, the atmosphere was what you would expect, there wasn't many people, but those that were there were friendly and able to participate in the conversation. In my typically judgemental opinion, Ass Clown was an excellent place, and they should move to my current home in Ohio, or back to my true home of PA, so that I can visit the Ass Clown Brewery more often. *****EDIT***** Add Sam to the list of individuals getting that raise. Revisited Ass Clown Brewery (2 times in 4 days) and enjoyed more beers, while having an equal (if not better) conversation with tonight's bartender. Sam knew her stuff, called my colleague out (respectively, and politely) on his incorrect descriptions of beer, and held an extremely entertaining/intuitive conversation about perception. For a Wednesday, the crowd was decent, 2-4 groups of individuals upon arrival, and 1 or two (besides us) at closing time. Tonight's main features not only highlighted Ass Clown's excellent beer, but also the atmosphere and the, previously mentioned, epic staff employed there. Sorry for the long post.
