My husband and I were in Kelowna to visit some friends (we met at the halfway point, aka Kelowna). When his friend mentioned they were in the mood for Chinese or Japanese food, my mind went to the Asian Pear Buffet. I had never been to this restaurant before and had no idea what to expect other than they would have Chinese food, and it would be a buffet. Turns out, Asian Pear has Chinese, Japanese and Western buffet food. We walked in and were seated promptly to an open table, though I did find out later they did reservations, at least for large groups. Drinks are separate from the buffet food price (the food price was reasonable). My husband ordered a beer and was less than impressed with the size; they gave him a can of beer for the price of a pub pint. I didn't have the heart to tell him that Asian establishments are probably not known for delivering on great value for alcoholic beverages. I was impressed with almost everything else at the buffet. The plates were on the smaller side, but it didn't matter because I could simply get seconds and thirds. The staff are great at clearing your plates quickly. They had a good selection of Chinese, Western and Japanese (sushi) food. I was impressed by the selection for Chinese foods; I saw Sweet and Sour soup, lots of fried rice and noodles and even coconut buns in the dessert section! I liked most of the stuff I tried, expect for the custard dessert they had...it tasted cough syrup sweet. My only caution is to not order the canned alcoholic drinks... you'd probably get more bang for your buck if you went to a pub after the buffet. I think this is a great place in Kelowna if you are looking to satisfy your Chinese/Japanese cravings and if you are into buffet portions. Staff are efficient and friendly. The quality of food served at Asian Pear has gone downhill considerably. My husband and I used to order from here quite a bit, but the last time we did, we were very disappointed. Everywhere they can cheap-out, they do. The shrimp used to be bigger, now they are small and tasteless. As I mentioned, we have ordered from Asian Pear for years, and we know what they used to be. Over the years, they have cut here, and cut there until the quality and taste is just not there any longer. We have chosen to no longer order from Asian Pear or their newer restaurant, Yum Yum Tree, as we feel it's just a futile waste of money. After said that, I was told that they put more effort in cooking the food if you order take out instead. Prices are reasonable. Kelowna doesn't have a lot of Chinese food options. So I am not going to be harsh on them. I am giving this place three stars because I am a picky eater and being from Vancouver, I have had way better Chinese food. This is a Canadian Chinese restaurant. The food was ok. They don't have the fancy stuff that you find at Chinese restaurants in Vancouver. We ordered a couple of Chinese dishes to share. - Ginger Beef - Stirfry Veggies - Lemon Chicken - Chow mein - Sweet and Sour Chicken and etc. We had it delivered to us. Our meal also came with a Thank-you card. That was really sweet from the owner. B's parents were surprised that the delivery person was an employee of the restaurant and not the owner. Before Covid, the owner would deliver the food. Living in a small community almost everyone knows each other. I suggest ordering take out and not go in for their buffet. IT HAS MSG!!!!! If you don't want MSG stay away! We went there because it advertised no MSG. I get a bad reaction with MSG,,,,,headache and irregular heart rate for over 30 hours. It usually wakes me up around 2-3 am. Oct. 12 at 5pm we ate the Buffet and at 2am I was awake with an irregular heart beat. It lasted 32 hours. This was my first time in Kelowna and my wife wanted to eat Steak for Lunch. As we were driving towards the highway we stumbled upon this restaurant and saw "buffet". We decided to detour and head here and it definitely was not a disappointment. Their buffet had a variety of Asian food ranging from wonton soup, noodles, stir fried vegetables and chicken, pork, crispy chicken and sushi. One thing it did lack was the seafood section. We thought that they would also have crabs and lobsters but perhaps during lunch time they do not serve those dishes. You get what you pay for. This isn't an upscale buffet considering the price, but they do a good job at providing a varieties of affordable Asian dishes (mostly Chinese and Japanese). The foods are not really authentic, more like westernize-Asian-foods. I give an extra star for their interior and overall hygiene. It was very clean and the food stations aren't messy like most cheap buffet places. I have been to many dirty Chinese buffets so Asian Pear Buffet really stood out. Was here last week. It is Westernized Asian food with a couple of western selections (roast beef, salads, desserts). Pretty large number of dishes. Place was busy. Facility clean. Service ok. We eat at Asian Pear as often as possible. They offer every scrumptious item that we enjoy from North American to Asian, and we always leave wishing we could've eaten more. Their roast is to die for, with mashed potatoes and gravy. Never mind the dry ribs and fried chicken. Yum!! read more

The quality of this place really took a nosedive. When we first started going there when it opened it was a great place to eat but as the years roll on the food must be the 4th grade on the market. I have been to Asian Pear about 6 times since they opened in Kelowna. They started out pretty good but gradually the quality went in the tank and the service followed. This appears to be a common trend with most Chinese Buffet restaurants we have visited. Our last visit was terrible, food was cold, selection was awful, service was brutal, and the place was starting to look pretty tired. The restroom was filthy! I came in with my 7 months baby and therefore I requested an extra chair so that I can put my car seat on the chair.
