I don't know if I've ever left or felt the need to leave a yelp review before, but man.... having eaten at this establishment and the location in Lawrenceville for a long time, the changes instituted with the new year have been a pretty big letdown. I don't know if Asian Express has new owners or what, but I truly hope that the owners take reviews like this and any possible dip in business to heart and see the error of their ways. Firstly, they got rid of their sushi. it was cheap, but good and I enjoyed it. Secondly, this restaurant that was widely and affectionately known as a "dollar scoop" or "scoop spot" is no longer such. Where they use to charge $1.50/scoop up until last year (and, typically, quite generous scoops that required your plate's lid to be pushed down to close it), they raised it to $2/scoop later in 2025. My traditional Saturday night order of lo mien, two scoops of honey chicken, two scoops of veggies and an order of teriaki chicken skewers (so 6 scoops, basically) came to 12 dollarydoos and change, up until the most recent changes that went into effect with the new year. Now, they no longer charge by scoop, but rather by "plate size", with the "large" plate costing 15 dollars and only being 4 scoops. I forget what they were charging for the teriyaki skewers à la carte now, but whatever it was, I think my "large" plate plus a side of skewers was either just shy of or just over $20. As a little cherry on top of this disappointing sundae, the servers must have been instructed to start being very strict with their scoop sizes, because not only was my "large" plate fewer scoops than I normally get, but the servers seem to be very, shall we say, conservative, with their scoop sizes. Very small portions. I think I counted literally like 15 little bites in my 2 scoops of honey chicken, pretty much halving the generous scoop sizes I'm sure accustomed to. So yeah, tl;dr version is that what use to be a cheap but very good fast food takeout place has, in the span of a few months, more than doubled their prices while also reducing portion sizes. Not cool. The value of the food at Asian Express has always been a huge factor in making it my weekly go-to Chinese take-out spot. I get that the economy is bad right now and inflation is through the roof, but man is this all very disappointing. Bottom line, if this once cheap but very good Chinese spot is going to cut back on quality *and* quantity while also raising their prices to the same level or higher than the Chinese place I had previously been going to since high school, I may as well go back to patronizing their business instead... and I have. read more

If you have been following me for awhile, you know how much I love oriental food! I came here to try it out because 1) the reviews and 2) $1.50 a scoop sounds not to bad especially if you on a budget. When I came in, there were nobody dining inside. And it was lunch time when I came. They have a buffet style setup at the register. I ordered the honey chicken and mixed veggies. The food was ok. The veggies were warm. One of the girls was cooking and eating at the same time. I don't know if I will come back to try again because I know what good food taste like! read more

The owners have changed. It used to be a 1.50 per scoop; however, they no longer do this anymore. The prices have significantly increased, and the food quality has suffered as well. They used to have really good yet cheap sushi. Now, they no longer sell sushi. The food doesn't test as fresh and the flavor is off as well. My lo mien tasted like fish and so did the chicken. I wonder if the grill isn't cleaned properly or something. All the flavors of the food are just mixed together in the worst way. The owners were nice, but the significant decrease in quality and portions but increase in price is just not worth it. I couldn't even finish my food because of how bad it tasted . FYI for those who like Asain Express in the Walmart shopping center at Chastain Meadows: They have new owners and when I called in an order last night was told that they have a new menu and no longer sell sushi rolls and the things the lady on the phone said they did have sounded no different from the old usual. The hubby was already on the way to pick up a couple of sides to go with our dinner or I would've cancelled because I really liked the sushi rolls and that was the main reason for the trip. When he got there, the serving station looked no different than before with all of the dishes offered. However the big wall menu is gone and replaced with what looks to be non working t.v.'s. He said it didn't look like they cooked anything to order, only what was put at the buffet style serving station though I can't be certain of this because he didn't ask so you may want to call before you go, it was only a little before 7 and most of the dishes were near bout gone and they had to scrape the pot for our hot n sour soup. On the plus side, our old go to sides we did good were tasty. You will also have to go to see what is available because they do not have any to-go menu's yet and what was told to me wasn't any help at all. I will miss my fresh to order cheap sushi and not certain I know of many Asain restaurants that doesn't sell sushi :( Time will tell if they survive. read more

The food quality/taste to price ratio here is absolutely excellent! Let me start by saying no, this is not a gourmet Chinese restaurant. But what this is is a tasty, quick, and fantastically prices place for quick lunch or dinner. This is one of those quick Chinese restaurants that charges by the scoop ($1.25 per scoop to be exact). But that one scoop tends to be 3 scoops of fried rice and 2 to 3 scoops per entree. A tub of hot and sour soup is also 1 scoop and 3 crab rangoon is 1 scoop. The serving size per priced scoop is VERY generous here. On top of the generous servings, the food...isn't bad. It's down right tasty. My favorite is the pepper chicken! I got the shrimp tempura sushi roll and the flavor was bland, rice was kinda warm still. Bleeeck... Also got the egg drop soup (was good but the crunchy things were stale) Got 2 spring rolls - I've had better frozen ones from the grocery store. Got the Japan chicken and it was semi-good. Even though I don't care for buffet type food( I'm a cook to order person and I don't mind waiting if its done right) I actually like this place. The restaurant was very clean, and everyone was very friendly. The prices were so low I ended up ordering to much food. Lol I order a Tempura shrimp roll and the Kung Pao Chicken lunch combo which came with soup or an egg roll, I order soup & a couple of egg rolls, the egg rolls were only a dollar. One of the best comfort food places near my work ( WIN) I was battling the most horrible cold last last week and their hot and sour soup instantly made me feel better . No, this is not authentic Chinese food, so I'm comparing this restaurant to other Americanized Chinese restaurant. It's a take out place, but instead of cook to order, the food is pre-cooked and displayed in a buffet table. You tell them what you want, and they'd scoop it for you. Flavor of the dishes is typical of Americanized Chinese food - you know, breaded fried meat with some brown, white, or red sauces. Really nothing to write home about. Most protein is chicken. There is a stir fried vegetable dish and recently added a beef dish. In addition to Chinese food, they also offer Japanese food - like teriyaki and sushi, which I have not (and probably won't ) tried . What I like is the price - $1.25 per scoop. If you're looking for a good, very economical and quick lunch option, you have to try this place. I've been several times now, and for what it is, you'll have a hard time beating it. The taste and portions are very adequate. Think Mom-and-Pop Panda Express. The hot-and-sour soup is a very good option to try(for $1.10), along with the steamed dumplings. This is more of a take out place, but if you want to sit down, you can get a fountain drink or some other options in bottles. This is definitely a great place for the KSU student on a budget. This place is clean and the people who work there are so friendly. I came here because it's close to work and I've received a thumbs up from several coworkers. The food is perfectly edible, but it doesn't have the quality of flavor that I enjoy when I pay for someone to cook my food. I ordered the mixed vegetables, chow mein and General Tso's Chicken. The chicken was the best and if I go again it will be this that I order. The vegetables were perfectly cooked (not mush) but the sauce they were in was bland. This place is awesome! My fiance and I adore it. A dollar a scoop... That's great tasting Chinese (the best I've ever had) at McDonald's prices. They also have pretty good sushi for cheap. If you're used to high end sushi though, it's not quite the same. I would recommend the tempura chicken roll, which was amazing!
