The Long Version: My husband and I got takeout from The Hot Wok for dinner when we were staying in Perth. All their food is packaged as takeout, but they do have seating where you can eat your takeout food, just no table service. We decided to take the food back to our hotel room instead. We got the Bang Bang Chicken ($18.25) and the Shrimp Pad Ki Mow ($19.50). I called my order in and we walked there to pick it up. I was told it would take about 30 minutes to be ready. (They make everything to order.) We arrived after 30 minutes and our food was ready as promised. The lady on the phone was very courteous and I think she was the same lady at the pickup counter. The Bang Bang Chicken was listed on the menu as "Lightly breaded chicken tossed in a creamy honey sauce, on a bed of greens." It did not mention sesame seeds were sprinkled on top and I forgot to say "no sesame seeds" with my order so I was a bit disappointed that I couldn't really eat this dish, but that was on me. I was able to manage a few bites that didn't have sesame seeds on them (I can handle mild contamination) and I found the meat a bit dry, but the outside was pleasantly crispy and the honey sauce was pleasant. The "bed of greens" was actually raw shredded cabbage and carrots in a creamy sauce. I was asked how spicy I wanted this dish and I said medium, but it wasn't spicy at all, like not even mildly spicy, lol. Don't worry, the food didn't go to waste, as my husband ate it. The dish came with a small serving of steamed white rice. The rice was good, not too mushy nor too dry. The Shrimp Pad Ki Mow was tasty, albeit a tad too oily for me. It had 6 large shrimp, which were all properly deveined. They were plump and juicy. The dish also had broccoli, cauliflower, onions, carrots and Bok Choy. I was happy to see they were very generous with the vegetables. You have the option of having this dish with rice noodles or rice, I chose the noodles since that's what traditional Pad Ki Mow is. However, the noodles used were rather thin, like even thinner than traditional Pad Thai noodles. I like the wider noodles that typically come with Pad Ki Mow (or as I usually know it as, Pad Kee Mao). I was also asked what spice level I wanted this dish and I also said medium, and for this dish, it was a true medium as it had a spicy kick to it. They have their own private parking lot in front of the restaurant that is shared with their next door neighbour Jersey Joe's. Review #42 (2025)

Plus all the meals are made to order, the batches are small and this place sells out fast. Ordered the Japanese Miso Ramen and Korean Chicken Bulgogi rice bowl. The Ramen has pork chashu (pork belly I believe) marinated egg, sweet corn, green onion, nori and the miso broth is in a separate container so nothing gets soggy before you eat it. The Chicken Bulgogi was marinated chicken on rice with a taste of kimchi on the side. Great meal, great couple, hope they keep succeeding for a long time.

They offer 3-4 soups, salad bar with a mountain of shrimp and a dessert bar with cheesecake, soft serve ice cream and even a couple hot pastry style desserts. The inside of the restaurant is well lit, clean (including the bathroom). The only downside was it seemed cold at our table.

We enjoyed the late summer trees and people watching around the patio. Our server was really funny, speaking French, English, and a splash of Spanish. I originally wanted the beef salad, but he recommended the salmon poke bowl ("deconstructed sushi!") for more vegetables. (He didn't seem to know that poke is Hawaiian and sushi is Japanese, but poke appears often in Asian restaurants in this area.) He was right--the salmon bowl provided lots of crispy raw vegetables, and enough carbs to power me through the hike. The poke was unlike any I've had at an authentic Hawaiian place, though. It was like tuna salad, except instead of canned tuna I got raw or salted salmon (I couldn't tell which). I didn't touch the side sauce, which looked like tartar sauce. The salmon mayonnaise provided plenty of flavor for the vegetables and rice, and I ate the whole thing. My friend's spouse finished his fried rice, another good sign. But my friend didn't like the ramen. She said the broth was flavored with soy sauce and coconut milk--neither Japanese nor Southeast Asian. Her kids didn't finish their pho or pad thai, perhaps because there was too much for them. After tasting both, my friend ended up eating the pad thai. I'm glad we tried this place. It's a novelty amid the predictable overpriced North American and European food one finds in a touristy area. If I find myself in this area again, I'll probably try someplace else first, though.

The ramen was -- to put it mildly -- flavourless! And I have no idea what dish my sister ordered but it tasted like instant noodles smothered in soy sauce. The only points this restaurant gets is for the waitress being lovely and for the wagyu gyoza.
