Sandra's seems to be a half grocery shop / local newsagent as much as a bakery, though they certainly do that right, the store handily also sells a few newspapers, confectionery, various tobacco, light grocery and a few magazines. A nice sausage roll with brown sauce, and this is really saying something, because I generally tend to avoid that sort of food like the plague. Generally, sausage rolls have to be cooked in the oven, otherwise the pastry will go all soggy and disgusting, but somehow, Ashers have developed some sort of a recipe wherby they can be microwaved and still taste amazing, saving time and fuss. Excellent! Even if you haven't been to this bakery, you will probably be aware of them, as they supply to lots of local shops in the east Antrim area. They also do all manner of bakery related goodies, such as buns, cakes, scones, all sorts of breads (including some REALLY good focaccia) and huge cookies and muffins.

When it first opened (many, many moons ago!), the bread was always beautifully fresh, the sausage rolls had just the right amount of crispiness and the buns were very moreish. Now though, it's just not as good. It might be that my own tastes have changed, but I don't think it's as simple as that. I think a combination of general decline and competition from supermarket bakeries has allowed Asher's to go downhill. Previously I have bought fresh cream buns that weren't so fresh with cream that had soured and dried out bun...which they tried to claim was somehow my fault in the 10mins from purchase to walking home and making a cuppa to sit down with the buns! Giving them the benefit of doubt I trued them again a couple of months later and again produce on the shelves wasn't great but they did have packs of coconut iced fingers that weren't too bad. Anyway they are still in business so figured they must have improved and after a night of children tag team vomiting felt the need for a sugary bun. Eldest daughter took a walk round to bakery and the selection was woeful...they didn't even have coconut iced fingers! I mean come on what kind of self respecting bakery doesn't do them unless they are a fancy patisserie type (which this definitely isn't) they are only getting a 2nd star because my daughter says the german iced biscuits are nice.
