I occasionally shop here and decided to stop by on my way out of Carytown just to see what was new in-store. I was greeted by a friendly voice and then started to shop around. As I was approaching the men's side, I overheard (who I suspect to be the manager) ranting about a customer who previously came in and did something out of the ordinary. She bad mouthed them referring to them as "stupid", etc. I was kinda shocked to hear an employee refer to a customer that way even if she was talking to another associate. I also definitely heard her "playfully" say "Yes b****, I already told you!" directed at the store associate. I am extremely disappointed in the unprofessional language used in this store and particularly by a manager. If *I* could hear those comments, I'm sure other customers could as well :/ read more

I used to be able to come here and find a bunch of cute things but lately their selection is starting to get worse. 90% of the items are just tacky and odd, hardly anything trendy. The guy stuff is cute but most of the women's clothing is ugly. read more

While visiting Richmond, I stopped through all the vintage/thrift/re-sale I could find. (The whole re-sale situation in DC, where I live, is terrible.) I breathed a huge sigh of relief while in Ashby: this is what thrift and re-sale is supposed to look like. While I wish they'd had much more variety in what they offer, prices are reasonable; the shop is tidy; and they have a cute bathtub full of "By the pound" clothes! This is a brand new consignment store, where everything is under $30. I believe it's owned by the folks who own Clementine, and I already LOVE it. It's a great space with giant ceilings and lots of space to shop, and the store has a wide range of clothes. When it was just their weekend sale thing, I bought quite a few nice pieces, and I'm thrilled that it's sticking around as it's own store. Check it out! read more

Great consignment shop, I have been here several times, even before it was "Ashby" and it was the Clementine warehouse. I swear I find something every time I come here and I have scored some great deals! My most recent being an adorable lightweight trench, never worn, tags on, American Eagle brand, for $40. It was probably $75 or more new. Also got some gently used J.Crew Dress khakis for $16, also probably upwards of $75 new. Will be back for more deals! read more

This reminds me of a nicer local version of Plato's Closet and Rumors. You get to see some gently used brand name clothes at discounted prices. I like how the place is set up according to sizes and types of clothing. It's less chaotic and overfilled with inventory than other places I've mentioned. I didn't get to find anything I really liked that I wanted to buy, but if you hit this place up often, you're more likely to find something worth your while. Service very helpful. I'll definitely be back here whenever I'm in this part of town again. read more

As a store owned by Clementines - one of my favorite consignment shops in the RVA area- I knew I had to go check this store out. What a great spot to pick up some goodies without breaking the bank. From the cute outfits displayed to the cute dressing rooms, I know my new favorite RVA consignment shop. The absolute best part is that nothing is above $30 and you can always seem to find a steal to take home. Go, check it out. Don't walk- Run. A decent, well designed thrift store. Cute addition of new accessories, but otherwise it's nothing to scream about. Often has decent stuff worth buying, but I don't think I've ever discovered a cant-live-without item here. Selling here is also decent, though sometimes they take a lot of what you have and sometimes they take one or two items of a giant bag. Haven't yet figured out what they're looking for. I often stop in here when I'm in Carytown. read more

LOVE THIS PLACE! This is what Plato's Closet wishes it could be! Super awesome selection of hipster, secondhand clothing. I'm no skinny dame but I found some really nice pieces. This place definitely doesn't cater to big girls, but if you dig deep you'll find something. All in all, the chicks working there are super cool and the prices aren't scary either. They have great style! And my mom always comes by to check out the "by the pound" bath tub. I wish they had a better "size" variety though. You have to be pretty small to find anything worth while. But the jewelry and accessories are fun! read more

My typical store experience is trying on 60 things then leaving emotionally damaged. But my typical Ashby experience is trying on 60 things then leaving with two items. Thanks for my mental health, Ashby! Rated a 4 (not 5) for limiting try-ons to 6 items. As they don't watch the dressing room anyways, this is annoying for customers and zero benefit to the store. read more

I agree with the other comment. The girls here were sooo rude and it felt like they were super judgemental. I came for the first time after seeing all of the amazing reviews. It was my first time coming here. I wasn't even greeted when I came to the store. All of the employees were in the back gossiping???? Like wtf. So then as I walk back confused as hell someone finally asks me if i'm here to sell. I give them my clothes and no one helped me figure out how to sign in ??? I told them it was my first time selling there and NO ONE HELPED ME. I asked for someone to help me fill out a certain part and no one took the time to walk me through it. So when I messed up, she got an attitude and said "I'll just do it for you" Ok well maybe if you helped me there wouldn't have been a problem. They went through my clothes for about 10 minutes TOPS. I was like whatever because I was just ready to leave. I came in as SOON as I got the text about them being ready. The girl offered me 2.00... I was like ok whatever I'll just take my clothes back. She looks at the coworker like "We don't know where it is. We sorted it. If you read the terms you would have to stay and watch us go through them" I was like ? Girl you took one of my shirts and it was 5 minutes ago and you don't remember what shirt ????? Lol whatever. Just don't waste your time coming here. Especially if you're any color but white. A friend and I came here today as one of our stops on our thrifting day. Such a cute place! I bought a really cute pink asos skirt for $14 and she bought a top for about $10. Was a little disappointed in the lack of blazers, but another reason to come back. Customer service was awesome and we didn't have to wait long to check out. I love Ashby and staff. I went there to buy clothes for my GF for 2 years anniversary, They were really helpful and polite. Great customer service and a variety of clothing for different body types. I have a difficult time finding clothes as my girl friend is too skinny, but they have x-small size. read more

I love this place! Staff are friendly and the shop is kept tidy even on busy weekends. They give you a reasonable sum of $ for your clothes, (More if you're taking store credit which I generally do. I just think of it as recycling), as they're going on a limb purchasing your items outright which may not sell or will be sold for an extreme discount in their by the pound tub where the proceeds go to a local charity. I usually stock up on their endless supply of cute earrings when I'm there. read more

This place is amazing. I came here a few weekends ago after scouting out the reviews on Yelp. I love that they sort their clothes by size. I hate when I find something I love and it's not my size - you don't have to worry about that here! I walked out with an adorable dress and pair of white jeans for 30-some dollars. My FAVORITE consignment store ever! I just had my second baby 4 months ago and basically needed a new wardrobe. I went into Ashby, quickly found 18 dresses (yes, EIGHTEEN!) that I wanted to try on (I didn't even make it to the shirts/pants/skirts because I had limited time and...did I mention I found 18 dresses that I liked?!) I tried them on and ended up buying 9 of them - all for under $200. And I seriously could've bought more of what I tried but I was trying to stay under $200. I've never wanted to try on 18 things at one store and I've never bought 9 items from any store at one visit prior to this. Love this place! read more

Love this store, every time I go in I find cute funky vintage clothes for cheap. The clothes are also very clean and nice smelling unlike a goodwill or something. Their sister store clementine, a couple doors down, is also a good place to shop. read more

I used to shop there a lot. The clothes and prices are good. However, the last few times I've gone in to shop, the employees were a mixed bag- some were hovering and some had a bad attitude. Don't waste your time trying to sell clothes there, they will make you wait an hour to go through your clothes and buy one item for less than $5. The stuff in my sell bag looked better than most of the clothes hanging on their racks and they did not buy them. read more

I usually love this place but today I brought clothes in and got $16 store credit and found a cute romper for $16 in the store and the cashier seemed like she had better things to do the entire transaction and she charged me ¢85 tax.. And all I had was twenties so I literally broke a twenty over 85 cents. And then she didn't have enough change in her drawer so I had to wait for her to go get bills... Just very annoying. I imagine that the valuing system has a degree of arbitrariness to it depending on the worker and their mood etc. So please spare me the ¢85 next time. read more

I have been loyal enthusiast and customer for years and today I had the unfortunate experience of two employees talking about my sister and I in our presence and after we had already spent $50plus in their store. This is unfortunate bc the vibe of the clothes is super positive but over shadowed by unprofessional and embarrassing behavior from long term employees. Ok, I am a 39 year old gal who likes to wear creative, pretty clothes when not at work. I'm also environmentally-conscious and feel a lot better indulging second-hand. I mention my age because when I first came to RVA at 36, I loved Ashby and my style has not changed to my knowledge. But Ashby's seems to have changed its policy. I am put off by an emphasis on grunge. Overcrowded racks bulge with grungy clothes or unwearable styles. And so I was happy to be able to bring them a real beauty- a never worn fuchsia dragon-lady style silk dress with tiny orange flowers. It's eye-popping and I was so mad when I realized was a size too big. I walk in thinking, the sales clerk will be thrilled, b/c this is an example of great style for someone with a Bohemian or independent streak. But she says no, that this is not Ashby's type of thing, so they can only pay a minimum. What is their type of thing? Ripped beige tunics with huge armholes? 100% nylon blouses in summer? She suggested that perhaps a "younger person" would like their merchandise more. I'm sorry to say it, but this is goodbye for the time being! read more
