What a cool thrift store! Ok full disclosure, I just recently got into thrifting. I didn't know you could find so many cool pieces at a fraction of the cost. Upon entering, you can clearly see there is a vibe here. The place is organized so well, I don't feel like I'm in a thrift store. Every section is labeled and there's the men's section to the right. I saw name brands and well-taken care of pieces. The fitting rooms are like none I've ever seen. At least 5 and space to try things on. After COVID, I feel like a lot of places just got rid of them. The cutest thrift store I have come across! It's neatly organized and easy to find what you are looking for. There's new items, accessories, and gently used clothing. They have a range of jewelry, purses, and crew socks. There's a tub that's filled with clothes which is consider the sale items. Lots of choices of clothes to choose from. Overall: It's worth checking out. Prices are reasonable on some items. I ended up with jewelry that looks like Pandora charms. read more

Ashby might be one of the best consignment stores I have ever been to and that says a ton as someone who seeks them out in every city I go to. From the cute decor and accessories they source from local Richmond artists to the incredible staff I always have to stop here at least once. I have never sold here, but shopping is always an experience. I cannot seem to come out of here without buying something. You cannot really come in here looking for something specific as it will always be different. The prices are beyond reasonable, even if the item does not come at a discount or from the tub. Where else are you able to find sweatshirts for $10 and shorts for under $15? The men's section is also a decent size considering this mainly is tailored for women. I would always come out of my way to stop when I am in Richmond. read more

Ashbys is my favorite clothing store in Richmond. When I was at VCU I went to that store almost every week looking for new clothes. I love the consignment that they do, they're very flexible with my time and if there's no open appointments available I call the first thing in the morning to check for last minute cancellations. I always have pretty good luck with the items they take so I always use store credit. I've found some really cute and unique clothes for super cheap. Ray (not sure if that's correct spelling) always treats me so well and when I wanted to buy something I saw on their Instagram, she let me buy it over the phone and let someone else pick it up for me. read more

This is my favorite thrift store in Carytown. I can always find something cute and for a good price. On my recent visit I found a dream vintage dress for a murder mystery party I attended last weekend. Clothing prices range here, but most pieces I buy are between $10-28. They have a fantastic selection of accessories too. You can find shoes, bags, jewelry, local art and more. Most of the employees here are really kind. Some can be a bit short with you, but the kind ones always make my day. They carry name brands like Free People, American Eagle, Wild Fable, and more if you're into that sort of thing. They carry mostly women's clothing, but there have a men's section too. They also have a cute Halloween section right now. I highly recommend checking this thrift store out. Everytime I go to carytown I have to stop at Ashby. I typically don't even have to shop the whole store, I find amazing deals on the clearance rack and "the tub". I love that they have a huge range of selections and the layout of the store is thoughtful and enjoyable to shop through. The employees are always fabulous and helpful. Ashby is a must visit clothing store in Richmond. I've gotten many great finds here including a super cute pair of American eagle jeans for $12 (otherwise would have been $60ish). I love that Ashby's selection of second hand clothes is almost always of good quality. Prices are always more than reasonable. Stopped in - very crowded and very interesting mix of clothing, shoes, etc. The employees were very friendly and welcoming. We strolled around and didn't find anything that we just couldn't live without. The selection was very good and the racks were very well-organized. Dressing rooms were in the back. Parking is a nightmare. Like a level of Dante's Hell. If you are able to score parking anywhere nearby, this store might be worth a visit. You might want to go in when you have the time to scour the racks and really search for the good deals. read more

Oooh, what a fun shop in the heart of Carytown! Ashby is a store I would have walked right by if my friend had not insisted on going inside because her cat shares its name. And what a shame that would have been -- thanks to Ashby, I just enjoyed my first non-frigid day in the office! This shop is half boutique-consignment and part new. I could not resist when I stumbled across a new wrap ($29) that looks professional but feels like wearing a blanket. It is SO warm and even comes equipped with pockets. I wore it all day today and felt so cozy but also didn't feel like a weirdo when I stepped into the hall with it still on. Their selection isn't huge -- walk down the street to Goodwill for that -- but they do have a host of well-curated items from top brands to choose from at reasonable rates. I will absolutely return in the future as I replenish my wardrobe. The friendly ladies who rang me up also shared a sheet with directions on how to sell clothes there, so that's a fun thing to consider sometime! read more

05/2019 Ashby in Richmond's uber-charming Carytown (near VCU) is one of my all-time favorite resale clothing shops. I've stopped in on several occasions now & am excited more with each visit. The store is large, bright with fabulous vintage chic decor & bustling with shoppers. They carry an impressive inventory of women's (& men's) resale clothing & accessories in great condition. I sold at Ashby for the first time yesterday and I can't be more happy with how they handle the buying/selling process. Sure it's a bit tedious waiting for an appointment to open up online however, I had been trying to sell the same two bags of clothes for over a year at other second hand shops in richmond but was never able to because they would run out of cash after 30 minutes of being open or people would cut the line. Ashby's staff made the process so easy, I literally gave them my info, set my bags down, browsed for probably 10 min and they were done! Love perusing through Ashby! It's quite big compared to their sister store Clementine, and with more affordable clothing. I will say that their clothing does skew younger (think teenage-20s), but you can still find great pieces for all ages if you have the time to look! They have a pretty large variety of items - accessories, shoes, bags, belts, non-clothing items from local artists, and a small men's section. Check it out when you're in Carytown! read more

Nah, it's a second hand forever 21. I'm confused by their goods, and couldn't find anything note worthy or so great that it deserves to be mentioned in a yelp review. They have a tub of ugly clothes that are for sale by the lb in one corner and thrift shoes, with old vintage in another corner for sale as Halloween outfits, it's a strange confuddled gimmick they have going on that may not last long. New and thrift mixed alike? Weird. All of the products I saw here were cheap, cheaply made and priced up too high for what the item is actually worth. Meh, check it out if you must, or save your gas and stay in your jammies on the couch with Netflix, this store isn't anything you should waste your day off on. read more

I love Ashby. It's a fantastic hidden gem of Carytown. There are so many great brands here - you can definitely find an outfit for any occasion. It's really busy on the weekends, I definitely recommend going on a week day. They also have a pop up across the street that holds fundraisers for different charities. It's really cool! read more

Ashby is a really great consignment shop! If you only wear what's trendy, however, then this may not be the store for you. There are pieces here that you definitely would not be able to find at a Forever 21. I'd say that the overall style here is vintage with a bit of bohemian flair, or for utter lack of a better word: hipster. *cringe* And I don't mean the trying-really-hard-to-look-cool wannabe hipster, I mean genuinely unique hipster. As usual with thrift and consignment stores, keep in mind that it can be a hit or miss. That being said, I've found some really great, unique pieces here. Every time I come here I see at least one item that catches my eye. My favorite part of Ashby is definitely their discount tub - some see it as ugly unwanteds, but I see a treasure trove of clothes and accessories that aren't available anywhere else. And the best part? It's only $2 per pound! SUCH a great deal! The icing on the cake is that 100% of the profits from the sales tub goes to charity. read more

They've recently undergone a pretty extensive renovation and I'm loving the new space. They now have a dedicated sale section and a much larger selection of local items for sale. It was my first time in RVA yesterday and I loved all the little boutiques and consignment stores, but tAshby was by far my favorite. It's a clean store with a wonderful selection and awesome prices. They're selective about their products and the quality they put into their store. I've only been to Ashby once. I didn't buy anything, but I went away with a good impression. They have some really cute clothes! I wanted to buy a red leather mini skirt they had, but it was too big. Their accessories are cute, too. They even have a small men's section. Thank goodness, it doesn't have that second hand store smell. You know the smell I'm taking about. Cute. I want to say first, I have been vaccinated, and always wear a mask. Went there today to shop with family, made a few purchases, you can't try on clothes and can only return for store credit if doesn't fit. Happily waited our Turn to go in, but when checking out with no one but my family around me, and a large plastic wall shield between me the clerk, the clerk said "please put your mask up" with attitude, which was down for a 1/2 second, accidentally. She then touch my money without gloves. I get flack for being a liberal, but today I felt the craziness ppl talk about. Base on other reviews I am not the only one feeling some of the stuff could be more friendly! Let's try to be nice people read more

They have a calm and warming environment. My stay consisted of walking in to a store that started with me finding something straight away which was great. However, upon going into the fitting rooms, the doors seem quite opening and made me feel exposed. I am 5'6" and the top opening of the doors were almost to my eyes. If I had been taller or in fact could see over it, it would've made me uncomfortable. Then, once going to checkout, at the register, the woman who helped me cut half of the tag off and left the other half still in the shirt. She then proceeded to toss the clothing item into the bag. I have been shopping at Ashby for 8+ years now since it first opened. I have found many great items over the years and I think most of the clothing is relatively well-priced (although their jewelry is generally not very well-made and overpriced). I would love to continue shopping at Ashby but I simply cannot anymore due to how EXTREMELY rude the staff is. I have had several negative interactions with them over the years, and after reading through similar comments here on Yelp I see that I am not the only one who has noticed how unwelcoming and rude some of Ashby's employees are. They act condescending if you have any questions about buying or selling, and have made me feel like an idiot on multiple occasions. I have never asked difficult questions or tried to negotiate a buying or selling price, I have only asked simple questions such as where exactly to place my bag full of clothes to sell, or what the return policy is, and have consistently been met with sneers and annoyed responses. I am sure that running a re-sale store comes with its challenges and customers can be frustrating. However, similar stores like Buffalo Exchange (also in Carytown) seem quite capable of being both efficient AND kind. They don't feel the need to create some kind of "cool" demeanor that ends up just making people feel unwelcome and excluded. I will be shopping and selling at Buffalo Exchange from now on, and I hope Ashby will work on training its employees to treat people with kindness! read more

I am absolutely OBSESSED with this store and love how it's so close to where I live! It's a fantastic consignment store that sells lightly-worn clothes for women and the brands range from H&M to higher end labels such as Free People and BCBG. The clothes are grouped by size which I love (I've never been a big fan of clothes grouped by color). I've managed to snag items from Express, Mossimo, American Eagle, and Lucky Jeans at very reasonable prices and they're all still in great condition. As with any second-hand store, make sure you thoroughly check your items to make sure it's still in good condition (stains, missing a belt, seams are coming undone, etc.). I was trying on a dress when I realized there were three small holes on the shoulder (looked like a cat clawed at it) and informed one of the employees who kindly took it back. Oh, the Ashby staff is super nice! Always very friendly with smiles on their faces. Hell, I would be smiling from ear-to-ear if I worked there, too! Cons: I would advise Ashby to add a second hook in each of the changing rooms; as of now, there's only one hook per room. I think most customers like to use one hook for clothes to try on and one hook for clothes they've already tried on. I end up putting my clothes on the bench which makes them wrinkled. Other than that, they're nice dressing rooms. Second, I wish that they offered clothing for men (like Buffalo Exchange for those of you familiar with that store). I somewhat feel bad whenever I walk past Ashby with my sweetie because he knows I'm going to shop for the next hour and there's nothing for him but then that bad feeling goes away pretty instantaneously as I walk out the door with my new finds :) For real though, it would be cool if they offered menswear. I seriously go here at least once a week and since they accept items on Sundays and Thursdays, there's always something new! read more

Brought to you by the same folks as Clementine, Ashby is another shining consignment star in Carytown. More financially accessible than its tangerine sister, Ashby is filled with fantastic finds - from colorful scarves to funky jewelry to second-hand like-new clothing! Most items are between $5 and $30, so you don't have to break the bank to score well-known brands. Items are accepted Thursdays and Sundays, with no appointment necessary. I haven't consigned anything here yet, but I'm excited to have another easy option for my unwanted gems. When I stopped in on Black Saturday, I was super impressed by the staff, the merchandising, and the shop itself. I used to visit Need all the time when it occupied the storefront, and although Ashby is completely different from Need, they still maintained the character of the space. It's got that funky, cool feel with exposed brick and high ceilings. And the merchandising? Well I've been in great consignment shops and I've been in not-so-great consignment shops, and let me tell you: this is one of the great ones. Upon first glance, you might not even realize it's filled with second-hand clothing. The merchandising and organization is just that good. Very appealing to the eye! No trip to Carytown is complete without popping into Ashby (and Clementine) to check out their goods. This is definitely one of my favorite go to places when I'm looking to upgrade my wardrobe without having to spend a lot. The quality and selection here is unparalleled and the atmosphere is so warm and inviting. A majority of their items are very gently used, but every now and then you will find things with their original tags still intact, and all from a variety of great brands. I also love how they sell products from local vendors (those items tend to be on the pricier side). Everything is also organized neatly and it's easy to navigate the racks. read more

This place is definitely a fun stop-in. There's not a ton of clothes in here, but with a little digging you're bound to find a few gems. I found three: two designer silks (one dress and one top), and a tapestry dress normally retailed by Anthro. I've only been twice, but I didn't leave empty handed either time. Note: This is also definitely better than it's sister-store down the street, Clementine, which was so overpriced it blew me out the door with gale-force winds. read more

Aimed at the teenage/young adult crowd, Ashby is a hipper version of Plato's Closet. You'll find racks of stylish vintage and preloved brand name clothing and shoes for decent prices. Since it is aimed at a young demographic, Ashby does not carry many higher end items (you'll find those at its sister store down the street- Clementine). I usually find some good deals on the sale rack (and sometimes I find steals in the pay-by-the-pound bathtub), and I like a lot of Ashby's unique and inexpensive jewelry as well. read more

This place is a complete joke. I wasted my time coming up to sell clothes. First of all the customer service sucks and the cashiers have snoody and piss poor attitudes. I was told to go sign in and leave my bags on the shelf. As a first time seller and visitor to the store this was the most unwelcome impression. Anyways I sign in and its like you have to pull tooth and nail to get direction on how their store operates with regards to selling items. I asked how long it would be so I could plan what to do while waiting. I was told 2 hours (which is highly ridiculous), so I left after filling out a paper with my info including my phone# (which no one called). I waited 2 hours and no call. I finally called 2.5 hrs later to see how much longer and the person who answers says "oh your stuff has processed"...sooo why did you not contact me then??? I get in the store and get a low ball offer. So I asked to see what was taken and the 2 cashiers after looking at me in a strange way said No you cant see its on the paper you signed. This is very unethical. So you basically get over on people and theres nothing I can do because you toss everbodys stuff in one pile. So what if i declined to sell to you. Do I jump in the pile to sort my stuff out. The cashier was extremely rude and I will never again sell here and advise other not to and because of the "nasty snotty attitude I wouldnt even reccomend anyone shop here either. Totally not right. Get a better system and new staff. Not to mention when I came home and sorted through my stuff I sold Good and new stuff for like 10% of what it was worth which is a rip off!!! You should take that tub you advertise and wash your nasty attitudes off !! read more

I came here after standing in the heat for way too long and while waiting for my buzzer to ring for lunch. This is one of the best consignment shops I've been to! It's decorated perfectly for the clientele and organized by size. The real draw for me was their jewelry selection. They had such eclectic pieces that were reasonably priced. I walked out with 2 rings before heading over to eat my lunch and returned after eating to check out more of the clothing selection. The clothes are good quality, in good shape, and desirable brands (Zara, Lulu's, Urban Outfitters). I found things that worked in my price range and found a dress that was totally different than anything else I owned! The staff was super friendly and it appears that they had a washing machine and a steamer in the back to keep new arrivals clean. I don't live in the area but I would make sure to visit this shop when I return! read more

As somebody who goes through t shirts quickly, I love shopping at Ashby to get "new" shirts cheaper than I would in the store. The selling process, however, is a total ripoff. They don't tell you what they buy from you, so you have no say in what they're offering you. Basically you sign a contract stating that you don't get to bargain with them. read more

What a fantastic little find--but not surprising considering what a jewel carytown is. Ashby is a small boutique style consignment shop with great options for men and women. The good: huge array of clothing and it's organized! When you walk in you immediately can identify the men's section from the women's. Additionally, they even have cute hanging signs that show the clothes are divided by sizes (XS, S, M, L, XL). It was a pretty crowded Saturday when I visited but I never felt cramped or rushed and the staff was very friendly (but also didn't hover!). Lastly, the dressing rooms were clean and had fictional hooks. It's my worst nightmare when clothing store dressing rooms are a mess and not functional for all the undressing I'll be doing. The bad: consignment can be hit or miss when it comes to styles because their choices are limited by who is bringing in their clothes, season, and etc. While this shop does an amazing job of offering different genres of fashion, you should be warned it could end up not being your speed...it's just the nature of consignment and thrifting. The bottom line: I got a cute tank top that's work appropriate for $5 and a Zara dress for $18. Normally, those items would cost me $70. I'm not a math major, but that's a freaking steal. read more

I occasionally shop here and decided to stop by on my way out of Carytown just to see what was new in-store. I was greeted by a friendly voice and then started to shop around. As I was approaching the men's side, I overheard (who I suspect to be the manager) ranting about a customer who previously came in and did something out of the ordinary. She bad mouthed them referring to them as "stupid", etc. I was kinda shocked to hear an employee refer to a customer that way even if she was talking to another associate. I also definitely heard her "playfully" say "Yes b****, I already told you!" directed at the store associate. I am extremely disappointed in the unprofessional language used in this store and particularly by a manager. If *I* could hear those comments, I'm sure other customers could as well :/ read more
