I've been a customer a few times at Ashby Lumber and it's always been seamless. Nothing big, but some wood for shelving and most recently a trellis. COVID update: they have hand sanitizer in front and plastic plexiglass separating cashier and customer. The trellis comes in a few sizes (1x8 & 4x8). I went with the 1x8 and it rang up at $37.50, not too bad. It's simple and fairly well made. They don't have a ton of garden stuff, but I think you really go here for the lumber/hardware store stuff. (I don't know the jargon). This store seems popular with contractors and workers so that is really a good sign. Overall, I can't speak to much, but simply getting some wood for simple projects has been easy and the guys in the warehouse have been super helpful answering some of our basic questions! read more

Selection of tools or pretty much anything on the shelf with a price tag is great. Product knowledge is A-1 and friendly. BUT DONT BUY LUMBER FROM HERE. Let me start by saying that I understand that theres a lumber shortage bc we cant find the people to transport all the lumber from the yards. Its Sept now and the lumber prices have already started to decline. Please dont use that excuse. My 1 star review is for the UNPROFESSIONAL manner in which the business incentivize their COMMISSION based sales staff to PRICE GOUGE would be do-it-yourself customers. You will get different prices from each different sales person depending on how friendly/unfriendly you are to them. They will always ask you "DO YOU HAVE AN ACCOUNT?" Thats the question that will determine how much they'll up charge you or give you your standard "in the industry" pricing. Basically if youre a contractor you'll know the current pricing landscape and cant be duped. Occurrence 1- I called to get a quote for lumber and was quoted $5500 for my lumber order. I mentioned that Home Depot quoted me $2650 so he dropped the price to $3200 from $5500. I went ahead and made the purchase with Ashby because they were able to deliver my large lumber order. Speed is money so I had to have the lumber on site asap. I DO NOT have an account with Ashby lumber so I probably would have gotten a lower price if i had an account. Imagine that if I hadnt not mentioned I had already price shopped that I would have paid at least $2200 more for my lumber. I cant fathom why there would be a $2200 difference in pricing unless they were trying to get away with charging the HIGHEST PRICE POSSIBLE. Occurrence 2 - I needed more wood delivered so I called Ashby because there was more dry rot then anticipated. Once again Home Depot wasnt an option because they couldn't deliver in time. I call and get a different sales person this time. At first they were booked up and didnt have anymore deliveries open for the date I needed. She proceeded to ask me about my order and was able to magically make space for my deliver once they found out it was a nice juicy $3,000 in lumber. This second order was almost as EXPENSIVE as my first order but only 1/3 the amount of wood from the first order. Of course I left it alone because they would probably magically not be able to make the delivery if I had corrected them about the pricing. MORAL OF THE STORY IS SPEND YOUR MONEY WITH ECONOMY LUMBER OR OSBORNE LUMBER if you want to support a local small business. Or just buy from Home Depot/Lowe to save money on your project. BE CAREFUL when getting a lumber order delivered because they will send you the UGLIEST PIECES OF LUMBER in the yard. I suspect they only do this to their non-contractors customers because they know contractors would not accept low quality splintered and chipped boards. Ashby Lumber - fix your PRICE GOUGING PRACTICES. If you actually care about your local customers then you would be more transparent about your pricing. Of course the GM will post a reply about how this isnt representative of their business but please try calling and getting a quote yourself. You will see how their initial quote is sky high and if you mention you got a better price from Home Depot or any other lumber yard that the price will drastically decrease. Indicative of poor management and bad compensation practices by the ownership. PAY YOUR STAFF ENOUGH SO THEY DONT HAVE TO PRICE GOUGE YOUR CUSTOMERS. If you are an occasional DIYer like me, you should totally come here to cut your lumber instead of in Home Depot. $2/cut is totally worth the price because they are precision cuts. By prevision, they really meant it. They measured my little 4×6s many times and even gave me some extra panels because they missed a few by like 2". We had a wonderful experience shopping for bath vanities at Ashby Lumber, and specifically working with Francis Combes. Francis took time to show us different vanity styles and options, answered questions by email promptly, and even ordered multiple wood samples for us to view. After placing the order, he kept us in the loop from start of production to ship date (even provided us tracking numbers) to delivery at our home. The vanity manufacturer (not Ashby Lumber) had several wood panels that were not to our liking, and Francis took the time and effort to get the manufacturer to replace them for us. The front staff are helpful and their selection is good. Good COvid protocols inside store. All their untreated non green dry wood in their yard we've bought is still "wet" though, which causes a great deal of sap after cutting. Will look elsewhere for lumber now. Not sure why Their kitchen and bath folks are there at all : they don't want to answer questions, can't refer you to installers and seem annoyed that you asked. Tried on numerous occasions to give them our money but bought elsewhere. Perhaps they just deal with existing contractors and don't want new business? I run a small handyman business and shop at all the area construction supply stores. Here's my rundown. TLDR Ashby is my favorite. Truitt and White - the only time I go here is when I need something that none of the other lumberyards carry. I have found that they consistently have a 20% markup on lumber compared to Ashby or Economy. However if you need a PT 10x10 or some other bizarre piece of lumber, they have the biggest yard and will probably have what you need. Economy - High street has been a mess ever since Covid started. Their door and window showroom has always had the worst follow-up and customer service skills of anyone except Home Depot. Calling for a price check is an ordeal. And I don't like that they make the guys in the yard do so much without forklifts. I imagine their yard workers get injured a lot. Economy on 40th - Great store with a smaller selection. Skilled staff. By far the most helpful on the phone or over email. No tools to speak of. Ashby - Unlike all of the above, you can look up materials prices on the Ashby website. Their door and window people are excellent, especially if you go in person. They have a great selection of tools and materials. I've found that their lumber prices are almost always pegged to Economy more or less and therefore quite a bit cheaper than T&W. Home depot - LMAO. Yes, it's the cheapest. Because they sell low grade materials that aren't even safe or code approved. 3-ply sheathing that will warp and twist like crazy. Dimensional lumber that is a lower grade than code allows for structural building. Pressure treated lumber that has almost no chemical penetration so it will start rotting almost immediately. "Common grade" redwood. Keep in mind that all of these places (except HD) are LUMBER YARDS. If you want ducting, electrical supplies, plumbing stuff, roofing shingles, a bbq grill or whatever else, you should go somewhere else or expect to pay a premium here. Oh, and for god's sake don't ask clerks at the lumber yard for advice on your project. They aren't contractors, they aren't engineers, and they aren't architects. It's annoying to everyone who is in line and I'm amazed that they are even minimally polite during some of these conversations. Do the research on your own, and just go to the store to get what you need. And don't get upset if you ask them to tell you how to build your bookshelf and they don't know what to tell you. Would you ask the grocery store clerk how to cook a meal when there are 10 people in line behind you? read more

Getting ready to do my first ever DIY project that involves lumber, I went to Home Depot - because that's where you go for stuff like lumber, right? First lesson learned: Never go to Home Depot. I have already lost too many hours of my life to the Kafkaesque nightmare that ensued from trying to order a lumber delivery from them (yet somehow, unbelievably, it is not even over yet!?) So I googled "lumber" in my area and found Ashby Lumber Company. What a difference. Just being a non-nightmare would have been enough, but they went above and beyond, getting a small-but-inconveniently-sized delivery out to me quickly + at a great price. I told him I was building something for a wedding, and he walked me over to the stacks and moved around a LOT of wood till we found the pieces I need. Keep in mind 4x6x12' can break a hand or finger with ease. But here he was doing waaaaay more than necessary to make sure I had exactly what I needed. With a smile, and the best attitude. The customer service here is absolutely atrocious. Rude and unwelcoming staff, specifically those at the front counter. As someone who works in construction, I politely asked a few questions regarding decking and staircase wood. The response I received from the man at the counter was sarcastic and unhelpful while other staff members idly stood by without interjecting. We went to Ashby lumber for a very small errand; some stainless screws that turned out to be a non standard size and thread. This happened after another hardware store, once they knew I just needed some screws, told me they'd send someone to the hardware area and then abandoned us.. Even though we arrived at this store 15 minutes before closing, they treated us like valued customers. We were referred to a lady named May who went the extra mile trying to find something that would work. She couldn't find something to fulfill our small errand, but guess what? We remembered that we have been wanting to replace our kitchen faucet with something more modern, and now we know who we are going to buy it from. Never thought I'd be reviewing a lumber yard, but my experience makes it worth it. I Just bought some Mahogany Decking and I have to say that Brandon at the counter was super helpful and friendly. When we drove away, my wife even said, 'no wonder you come here, they treat you like they know you'. Anyway, at the counter, Not only did Brandon D. give me a very good price on the wood, but he also met me at the lumber yard and helped me select the pieces. I was actually surprised to see him there. That was above and beyond. He was friendly and courteous and helpful without me asking him. Makes me feel good about shopping here. Seems like old school friendliness. The mahogany is beautiful. We're using it for interior baseboards and I'm guessing that's why Brandon took the extra step to make sure I got the right pieces.
