Dr. Suarez is the professional consultant who oversaw his treatment. She has also stepped in to oversee my care in the past. My experience with Dr. Suarez was one of compassionate and impeccable care! She was called in by the student treating me. Her level of care is truly above and beyond anything I expected. For those who question 'why' I have care in this teaching environment, Dr. Suarez is part of the answer. She offers her expertise and ability in a way that I find incredibly reassuring. My son is a disabled veteran but is only 80% so receives no dental care from the VA. He only has his disablity as income and is only 47. He is a diabetic and is losing all his teeth due to a dental procedure done when he as a child. He can't eat most solid food so I was looking for free dental care or very reduced costs to get him implants or dentures. When I looked up free dental care on the web Arizona School of Dentistry and Oral Health Dental clinic was the first one on the list (see photo) I was so excited as I thought finally someone will help him. Unfortunately after speaking to the customer service rep who answered the phone I was told they do NOT offer free dental care and only have a 20% discount over most private clinics!!! I was shocked and disappointed to say the least. Why are they advertised as a Free Clinic and then only provide a 20% discount, he can get that at most regular clinics because he is a veteran, so not really a discount. Adults have 32 teeth so she told me to get implants it is $1000 a tooth so that is $32,000 dollars!! WOW not much of a discount.... read more

It's hard to say weather if recommended this school as i didn't actually get any work done here but what i did appreciate is that when I came in they gave me a screening to dyeing if I was going to be a good candidate for their school. I paid $90 but after the dr determined i wasn't a good fit for the school, they gave me a refund which I was totally not expecting. I was concerned about the mixed reviews found on yelp but from my experience, the Dr and students and staff seemed polite and friendly. I'm from Colorado and here for the winter so I wanted to get root planning and scaling iow deep cleaning. They explained they work mostly with people who need crowns, fillings, dentures and more complicated procedures. They have me a list of places (low cost) that specialize in in deep cleanings which i appreciated as well. While I did drive 45m to get here and waited till 315 for a 2pm appointment i do feel it was time well spent and really appreciated their honesty, referrals, and giving back my money. Be sure to show plenty of time for your appointment! My husband and I both receive our dental care at this facility. He got a partial denture procedure and I am in the middle of an implant, along with all ongoing check ups and cleanings. We have both loved our student dentists assigned to us and appreciate the friendly, professional care we receive. Yes, you will spend more time in the chair here, because every procedure is double, sometimes triple checked! This dental school has all the newest equipment and cutting edge techniques you might need, along with the experience of the teaching staff in every department. I initially went to the Dental School because my 46 year old bridge finally broke. That was 7 years ago this month and I'm again without 3 teeth on my lower right side. They finally did pull my 2 nub teeth and put screws in for a bridge after several visits and harassments at every visit to get braces on my teeth. I said NO to the braces so many times that I had to remind them that No means No. The student that did my implants / bridge (who was big on lectures and somewhat condescending) didn't even know how to administer Novocaine correctly. I was in tears of pain and stress by the time she was done. Long story short, I had to come back 5 years later to have one of the implants removed because it was destroying my jaw bone. Probably from being put in incorrectly because the other implant and my natural teeth do not have bone loss. I was supposed to get a Partial put in this month, but they told me not to return. Most likely because I started to complain about super long waits between visits (1 appointment per month), cancelling one of my appointments without even notifying me, spending most of my visits doing x-rays and impressions ad nauseam and dealing with the front desk employees who hardly ever knew what was going on. I did have a crown put in this year and just had to have it removed because it was done so badly the first time. The replacement crown took many months and complaining to accomplish. If you just need a teeth cleaning or a filling, go for it, but I wouldn't go in for any major work that needs to be done. Approximately a 30% cheaper bill is just not worth it because you get what you pay for. read more

They were supposed to give me a price for a mouthful of work but I didn't get that. They kept steering me towards saving as many teeth as possible and I wanted dentures or better yet implants. I felt that they were not completely upfront with me and was stringing me along. The student was terrific. Very efficient and capable. But, she had to take her supervisors instructions and pass it on to me. I was asked to pay $79.00 to clean my teeth before any dental plan was shown to me. It's great that this exists for low-income people, but there are options out there that cost the same, are organized better, and take much less time. Don't come here unless you have no major issues and only if you can wait several hours each appointment. Also know that what is a normal exam and cleaning elsewhere takes three months here, because they break it up into 1- introduction and x-rays 2- evaluation 3- cleaning. Each of these is scheduled a month in between, minimum, and each one takes three hours. Yes, it's cheap, but isn't your dental health more important than that, and shouldn't you take care of it fast so it doesn't evolve into bigger issues? I went for my first appointment, and, even though I'd paid the first fee, I decided to not return, because of how long each one takes and how long you have to wait in between appointments for a basic cleaning. read more

This was such a good experience I was up all night with a extremely severe painful tooth ache I don't have health insurance so I didn't think I could afford a dentist Friends and Family told me to look up a dental school and thats how I found A.T. Still I called and they said they accept five Emergency patients a day at 1:pm It was 11am but I didn't care I drove straight there and I was the first patient seen at 1p.m. it cost $15 to be seen, $15 for the X-Rays, and turns out my wisdom tooth was infected and had a cavity so they sent me up to oral surgery, it cost me $85 to get the tooth extracted i was nervous and they talked me through it and calmed my fears It didn't hurt at all, I was numbed up and the student did a good job they gave me a three prescriptions to take with me and I have to return next week for follow - up the follow up appointment is FREE! totally recommend this place to any and everyone! read more

MIXED FEELINGS......... Do I give this 3 stars or 4. Hmmmmm. Today is probably not the greatest day for a review from me about this university. First, I will say that my experience up until this afternoon has been fab. (I will explain in a bit). I've been working closely with my general student dentist and he has been above and beyond making me feel comfortable. He has been very thorough and gentle. We went over my dental plan which will be many months. Maybe I got lucky with Dr W This afternoon, however, was very frustrating. I went to oral surgery to have a molar extracted. I was given several shots with no luck of proper numbing. I've never ever had this happen. The overseeing dentist Dr P had the personality of a wet rag! He came in and said that there's nothing they can do for me. He then asked "any questions?" Literally....before I could speak he said "ok" and turned his back and walked out. REALLY? Wow! Rude rude rude. I will hopefully resolve the issue with my general doc. I'm sure he'll help me work something out. Remember, it is a learning university. read more

I'm done. The doctor that was to be at this last appointment, was not. Cohen was there, replete with condescension. He said nothing about his past behavior. Dr. Patel was cowering. The assisting student was, again, so chipper that it was disingenuous. We've decided to move to Washington State. I told her I've done my research and that I'd more like go to the University of Washington. She got excited about where I shouldn't go because those doctors were very convincing (not sure which doctors and where) but that "someone like you" might be persuaded into treatment.... "Someone like me". Really? She awkwardly and hurriedly tried to show me some physical therapy moves, squirted some cold spray on me, then handed me three sheets of instruction. I just muttered that the physical therapy instructions should've been given to me from the beginning. I couldn't get out of there fast enough. "Someone like you...". I feel like back I'm to square one, minus the two perfectly good molars that should not have been extracted. As the student walked away she said "I have a feeling that once your jaw muscles relax it'll go back to where it was.". Well, it's been two years, and that's the problem.....my jaw doesn't want to be there. Cohen barked questions at me "What do you mean, that's where you "hold" your jaw?!". It's where it wants to be, it's where it's comfortable...it's where it is, it where it has been. Like one who "carries themselves a certain way", it's not literal. I'm not literally holding my jaw there. It's where it needs to be, but my teeth don't fit together. If I put my jaw all the way back where my teeth fit, it inhibits my breathing and it's extremely uncomfortable! So he asks "How to you breath now?!". Because I hold my jaw forward, then I can breathe! Like I said, I'm back to square one, minus two perfectly good molars. He's so awful. read more

I came here for my routine cleanings and to have a mouth guard made. My student dentist is sweet, easy to talk to, and explains what she's going to do. Yes, you will get probed here and they'll do a lot of other things that normal dentists probably won't do to you, but its sorta neat to learn about it. The facility is brand new and the first dental school in Arizona, so support your future dentist! =) Prices here are lower than your regular DDS because they're in training and it will probably take a bit longer to have the procedure done. read more

Student dentists are caring and compassionate and eager to do their best. They are also humble and smart enough to ask for help when they need it. NOTE: I'm biased because I'm a student dentist here. The faculty here is amazing. If you have lots of time and not as much money, this is a good option for you. Upsides of being a patient here: you have multiple eyes looking so you know you're getting the best of care and it's less expensive than going to a private office. Downsides of being a patient here: appointments can take up to 3.5 hours long each time and there is a long process to things because it is a teaching clinic. read more

Oooh, I love these guys!!! I am so happy I found them and I just love coming here. I also go to the Mesa Hygiene Clinic in the evening where the hygiene students do a fantastic job cleaning your teeth. The residents are great and their attendings are as well. It takes a while but gosh, they go through everything in your mouth and really take the time to explain it to you. I like to see good students really learning and its so awesome to see them becoming excellent dentists. Really, who doesn't like to help others? especially, when they are really helping you. So, good all around for sure. One thing that's really important to me is that it's a school and so the students want to learn. No one is trying to sell you inflated expensive things for your teeth, no fear and scare tactics that some independent dentists might do to make a buck. Shifty? yes, I would say that is. Bad dentists ! Anyway, I always feel safe from any of that and I really trust their opinion. Thank you so much !! PS - When I was a kid I went to the Forsyth Dental Clinic in Boston, and as an adult I went to the Harvard Dental School resident clinic. THIS PLACE MAKES ME SICK! The worst customer service I have ever come in contact with. Saw me one time and decided that they could not do the surgery on my teeth and kicked me on the street. So, I paid them to take a look and my teeth and get no service out of it. I went in as an emergency patient, they got me through quickly, the students were very kind, answered all of my questions. While I probably spent more time there than at an established dentists office I felt like I got more care and concern. They weren't able to take care of my issue, they did give me Rx's for antibiotics and pain mess, also referred me to 3 different oral surgeons that work with the school. Don't trust them! They will quote you a price for dental cleaning (in my case $65) then when I drove all the way from Surprise to Mesa and check in for my appointment, she says it will be $172. I drove all the way across town for NOTHING. And they didn't care one bit. Actually chased me out of the waiting room (I was utilizing a chair to look simmering up on my phone and she told me I had to leave). I wasn't being a Karen or anything, just quietly using my phone and she came out from behind the walled-off check in area just to rudely chase me out. She wasn't being nice at all and I had done nothing to warrant that kind of treatment. (I had specifically asked when I scheduled the appointment about the price for perio-maintenance without my insurance, since I'd already used both covered cleanings for the year) and when I arrive at the appointment she says it's more than double the quoted price. No apology just a swift kick out the door because "you can't be here if you're not going to be seen." Well who's fault is that? I brought the $65 you told me I'd need to be seen! So if you like being treated rudely and given the bait-and-switch by all means come here. For restorations it does save you some money, but not for cleanings. read more

The assistant Lisa and Dr Tim were the only ones who seemed to know what they were doing... I was only given 1 triazoam, by Dr. Wu so had to take my dr prescribed xanax in the dental chair. I paid for the sedation for a reason. Then I WATCHED her put the bottle with 1 pill left in her pocket! She said to raise my left hand if I had pain, she ignored this so I said if ur going to continue I'll need to be sedated because I am not. I take 4 two mg xanax a day, and .25 mg triazolam = 1 mg of xanax... AND she didn't even give me both so I had to use my OWN anxiety meds. Why did I pay for sedation again?? To be withheld when I was clearly anxious so the Doc could take one her for herself? This will be followed up through the DEA controlled substances act, ASDOH complaint/grievance procedure, and through my insurance company. Completely disgraceful. Only reason I didn't give 1 star was Lisa, the assistant. read more

PLEASE stay away from this place. There is no point in saving a few dollars if the dental work is going to need redone by an experienced dentist within a year, likely much less than a year. Remember, these are young students, they have no experience. If you do go, do not go for anything critical such as a crown or root canal. I had crown work done,3 molars. They looked like an amateur did them (because they are amateurs) one of them abscessed (which cost me $2200), and one of them totally fell out within 2 years - post and all. When it fell out, the school said i had to come back in and do it all over from the beginning and pay again. My total cost has reached 2 1/2 times what an experienced dentist would have charged me! Don't make my mistake, please stay away from this place. I have since discovered there are many dentists that will charge you about the same as the school charges, if you don't have insurance. Also, some dentists will work with payments. Call around, find a qualified, experienced dentist and talk about your financial needs. I found several who charged the same as the school for crowns and a couple that charged less!!! read more

A couple of weeks ago I called 4 times and this person whom I talked to said he would direct my call to the school and every time I got a recording saying "fill out the form or print out the form on line send $69.00 and we'll see if you qualify.". I've had a very good experience over the past year. I am a believer that the students try MUCH harder than most dentists, they are checked and rated by a Dentist all the time and are highly motivated to do a really good job. The price is good, my crowns (full porcelain) were $600 each. I've had an excellant student so I've had no problems and he openly asks the dentist for help when needed. He's graduating this year so I'm hoping to get situtated with another student equally good! I'm no novice when it comes to dental work and would recommend A.T. Still University. Had a seriously infected broken tooth and they got me in, got me on antibiotics so I could return and have the tooth extracted. I had brought my special needs daughter and they happened to be having a special needs pediatric clinic. The clinic was free and they were awesome! My daughter is very fast to fright and she was super happy and excited the whole time. I came back and had to bring my daughter with me, for the extraction and they answered all her questions and let her look on and "assist them". Both students really were awesome and they were gentle and knew what they were talking about and doing. read more

I feel like their comprehensive exams are extremely thorough. They explain and educate you with what is going on with each tooth. They will tell you which ones have a greater priority. It does take longer than the regular dentist, but you have a student doctor checking you out, and then the actual doctor examining what the student doctor is doing, or what he/she has found. For the root canal, the student usually does one root, while another doctor completes the other 4. I also learned that with certain kinds of fillings, you can get them done at no cost if you do them for the student's board exam. (this is in May) I feel like it is a place I can trust, but it does take longer than it would at a regular dentist's office. read more

I took my 3 foster kids here to the Pediatric Clinic. Since it is a school, it took a long time (about 3 hours) for the initial appointment, but it was SO worth it! The doctors were AMAZING with the kids and they really helped me understand what needed to be done with the kids, without feeling pressured into getting work done (even though my kids' teeth are a mess). Well my appointment did not start off as planned. Blood pressure really high.I am an extremely high candidate for white coat syndrome. To cut a long story short blood pressure came down. Procedure went ahead as planned. No pain felt from cleaning filling out (having a crown) I love Faith Barreyro she always is caring so kind and will really be so awesome as a dentist. On Friday, January 11, I visited the dental clinic, was evaluated, and had a mercury filling replaced. I found the treatment plan to be quite reasonable. While the visits took quite some time, it was not a surprise and not a problem. I appreciate that they provide quality dental care at a reasonable price, and something that helps a good many people. I have gratitude for the filling that was replaced. What was 100% wrong was taking a completely new set of x-rays when I brought in my own complete set taken one month previously on December 4, 2018. I was very much taken aback when the doctor ordered this new set of films and expressed my concern. However, I had driven 2.5 hours to the clinic, wanted to try and combine visits and save driving, and ended up acquiescing to this x-ray demand. This is something I deeply regret. At all else do no harm. I walked in for preventive care. The only symptom I was feeling was some slight cold sensitivity in the upper left-hand quadrant. There was absolutely no need to subject me to a complete new set of x-rays, including panoramic view, after only a month. I recognize that five cavities in the upper left and right quadrants were drilled during that time. I was also told that some of the films did not show the root sufficiently. Again, based on my history, there was absolutely no need to do another complete set of films rather than use what had been taken one month before. The attending dentist is not the only one at fault. The doctor running the x-ray machine also knew about my x-rays and did not need to comply with this dental travesty. She is equally responsible. Is this the standard of care for dentistry? If so, dentistry desperately needs to change. If not, what happened two days ago was malpractice. The standard of care is subject to change, but what is wrong will remain wrong forever. What happened two days ago was absolutely wrong. There are studies that may link dental x-rays to benign meningioma, the most common cerebral cancer. I recognize that the amount of ionizing radiation in dental x-rays has significantly decreased, but radiation is cumulative and should definitely be minimized whenever possible. The chance is extremely low. I know that. However, my faith and trust in the clinic and by extension the dental profession is irreparably shaken. I drove 2.5 hours to see them, one way, because I felt that the standard of care at a university setting would be best. I left my house at 5:30 in the morning to be on time for the 8:30 appointment. They broke my trust and confidence, and I feel violated. I will never, ever, ever, allow any dentist to take a set of x-rays on me again. What is extremely disturbing is that they are teaching the next generation of dentists to behave the same way and take excessive x-rays. I asked the dental student that I had seen what he thought of this new set of dental films, and he completely agreed that it was appropriate. I do not blame him at all, as he is a student and did a good job, but it does show that some of what he is being taught is wrong and will hurt others. That is not okay. My goal is to prevent other people from experiencing this fast and furious approach to x-rays, a wild-west free-for-all of dental films. Clearly the rules of the clinic need to be tightened regarding the use of x-rays. I understand that students need to learn to take x-rays, but what happened to me was absolutely horrible. Was this a case of patients paying the legal tax, where medical professionals walk around in a panic, desperate to avoid lawsuits, and subject patients to unnecessary tests and treatments? I don't know all of the motivations of the attending dentist and the doctor running the x-ray unit, but do know that what happened to me was wrong on every single level. I want to see change and am happy to do whatever it takes to help others. As previously mentioned, I had no problem with anything except the x-rays, would still like to be a patient at the clinic, but will do whatever it takes to change this terrible x-ray policy which subjected me to excessive radiation. read more
