OK , this is supposed to be a review about the restaurant aspect of AS220 right? (Because the righteous community spirit AS220's role in Providence culture has to be acknowledged and assumed--since I moved to Providence 10 years ago there has really been no comparable venue. I do have a real problem with their recent all-band-members-must-be-RI-residents policy for any band to play the AS220 club; an absolute misstep in their otherwise great history.) And so, about the restaurant: the new menu (2009) is terrific--I've tried 5 different dishes now, and some were ordered with trepidation, yet every one was superb. Wanted something fresh and light. The beet and goat cheese salad was perfect. A friend had a bean and noodle soup that he raved about. Everything was fresh and good. Perhaps a little pricey for what it is. read more

We are so freaking lucky to have AS220 in Providence. Seriously. It's definitely appreciated by tourists, if you're in Rhode Island, you should check it out. Really amazing art work, fun, cool, weird stuff. The galleries are shining gems in our city! If you are an artist, sign up for a show. The waitlist is long, but it's worth it. In a time when people are spending more time on devices and watching teevee, it's even more valuable and has something for everyone, every age!!! read more

I don't really know how to review this place seen as it's far more than just a music venue. I like it enough. The beer is cheap, so when I drop mine on the floor like a buffoon replacing it is no big deal. Good size space with nice sound. I like it here, but it's a little weird. I have no idea how to describe why, but it is. I've enjoyed myself each time I've been. But it's weird. Saw some legends here tonight and that was very enjoyable. I've also seen Sunn O))) here, and that was monumental. read more

I have yet to eat here, but i do enjoy sampling the infused vodkas. A great beer list, plent of booze, PVD hipsters,and loud bands playing next door. I do want to try the food here though. I like this place. read more

I have been looking for adult dance classes in the city for a while. So happy to have found this place. I bought a dance package and can't wait to be able to get to another class. I took the intermediate modern dance class and can't wait to take more! My only downfall is the limited parking. It's all meters do not take Discover card apparently! read more

The best, most original, and least annoying place to see a show in Providence Rhode island. Best Bartenders in town, and usually the best bands play there. Period. Parking is a bitch though. read more

Great food, great idea, cool asthetic. It's a little pricier than you would expect (a burritto and 2 tacos cost me and my friend nearly $20). Also, would it kill the people working in the kitchen (which is visible to everyone) to wear gloves? Just a thought.... read more

Great vegan fare! Creative, and tasty! I had a seitan sandwich on crunchy french bread, peanut broth soup, scorched chickpeas, and an amazing caramel cake. The cake was the best part, but the rest was delicious and satisfying. read more

The menu changes seasonally. The lamb pita sandwich is to die for! And the fish dishes are great and inexpensive. AS220 is actually a non profit with three buildings. They do more than just amazing food and eclectic shows. read more

It's a great place to go for vegetarians/vegans and the food is generally delicious. However, it always seems to be drenched in oil. My major problem is that the staff is so rude. The girls who run the counter and the phone are generally surly, they've even hung up on me in the middle of takeaway orders (without a goodbye or a "pick it up in X amount of time" or anything just "will that be all?" and then they hang up). I work downtown and my colleagues agree. Some have actually stopped going because of the rude service. I'm still going but I often think about stopping. If they were a little nicer and they eased up on the cooking oil I'd probably be there every day. Too bad. read more

Great valuable institution in Providence for the arts.

I love AS220! My band has played there several times and every time is better than the last. First off, the band gets half price of draft beers! That's killer on it's own. The sound is not always the greatest, but simply ask for tweaks during your set and you'll be fine. They record your set for $5 and you get paid for everyone that comes in the door. The money is split between the bands and venue, but it always works out well. The people there are always nice and the staff is very nice to talk to. The bartenders will always tell you what they have on tap and if you have any questions about the beers, they will let you know. It's a really great place to hang out and catch some good original music. read more

holymolyhasthisplaceeverchanged! and good for them, too! i started to become familiar with AS220 five years ago, for their open mics, poetry slams, art galleries, and peformance space. friends of mine used to play there often after long weeks of canvassing and it was always enjoyable. they also put on the foo fest, an all-day street fair where they close down the block and the hipsters descend on a radical book fair, record shop, vegan clothing screen printed with peace signs and feminist slogans, etc. and it is pretty much a guarantee that MahiMahi will close out the night with a bunch of sweaty bodies dancing their asses off. fast forward to late last august. i went to see my good friends BRIO play at the AS220, and i was anticipating an evening of being reunited with old friends. and that is what i got... in this SWANKY new place! they overhauled the entire design inside. you walk into to a food bar on one side and a booze bar on the other (amen!) with all kinds of house infused vodka (SOLD!) and to top it off, they still serve 'Gansett tall boys (praise jesus!)! it is all a far cry from the cooler they used to sell beers and sodas from at live shows. the performance space is now in a seperate room, as is the gallery, and they've added darkrooms (you can pay to go use them on your own) a print shop, and live/work studios. holysweetgoddamn. it makes me wish i'd never left the city of What Cheer! read more

My husband and myself went for lunch. The music was so loud and irritating ...,The cooks behind the counter were talking nonstop to each other using foul language...f++k bombs with no respect for patrons. We had the Seitan sandwiches that were so spicy we couldn't finish them,the soup was cold and we had to ask for it to be warmed,they stuck it in the Micro wave and it was scalding at that point. We would not recommend this place unless you were young, and liked rude service ,loud music and foul language,and also knew nothing about quality food. Terrible! read more

My experiences as AS220 started at their old location many years ago when my band played there. We played a good set but there was one song I wasn't happy with...it didn't come out the way we had rehearsed it. Bert, the benevolent czar of AS220 comes over to let us know he liked the set and heard us talking about that song..he said jazz players never want a song to come out the same way twice, why should it be different in rock and roll? It was a gracious and wise thing to say to kids out playing for only their third time. They give a venue not only for new bands,but any bands that need a venue as long as they play original music. I've been going for many years and can't say enough good about the place. The new setup is wonderful with a great bar with friendly bartenders (mostly artists from the AS220 collective) and a rockin Mexican food spot if you have the hungries. It is eclectic, so if it's an Appleee's experience you want go somewhere else...but AS220 is spot on for a night in Providence. read more

If you have a chance to see EMPIRE REVUE here, it's a great show and the jazz band is fabulous.
