My local tour guide recommended this spot. YUM! Simple, cheap, but oh so tasty. The sandwich was flavorful but gets enhanced to the next level with the mustard and hot sauce. Not too big so it was the perfect meal to tide me over to dinner time. Also paired very well with a beer.
The meat was well seasoned but slightly over cooked so a little tough and on the dry side. Bread was ok, I could have used more pork juice to soften it up and add more flavor to the sandwich. Overall, a decent bifana to snack on while walking around. Definitely not worth waiting in any line.
Oh my this window stop is a must. Such a well seasoned and delicious pork on a soft yet crispy bun. Best quick sandwich I ever had yet the picture is only half because I couldn't stop eating it.
The line around the corner says a lot. Their pork sandwich is awesome with some chili sauce and mustard. Finish it off with a Super Bock. Hmmmmm.
On a recent family trip to Lisbon, after spending the morning touring the Castelo de Sao Jorge,I found myself craving lunch-I wanted something local and something somewhat authentic-I chose the famous Portuguese sandwich bifana at the most famous bifana stand in Lisbon-As Bifanas do Afonso. After a short 5 minute walk down to the stand,I found a pretty good line-I'm guessing the social media reels I've seen about this spot must be true.Luckily for me though, the line moves really fast.,We ended up ordering a few classic Bifanas with no cheese(€3). They were pretty good-I ended up adding some of their spicy mustard and their house Piri-Piri hot sauce, which I swear u could put on anything and make it delicious. Now that I think about it,no shade to the Bifanas but I think I may have liked the hot sauce even more than the sandwiches-a true delight and must try when ordering from this spot. In closing,I will say if u ever find yourself lucky enough to be in Lisbon this place is a for sure must try for a fast in expensive tasty meal/snack-for no trip to Lisbon would be complete without trying the highly popular Bifanas do Afonsos. PS-Two quick tips, this place is cash only,so bring those euros and they are also closed on Sundays-so plan accordingly-Safe travels my friend.
To cheese or not to cheese. That is the question. It's a whopping €2 more (almost double the price) for the Bifana with cheese, but so worth it! Still a relatively cheap eat. The bun was fluffy. The pork was pretty tender, but very salty. I 100% preferred the addition of cheese, a good, healthy dousing of mustard and a drop of hot sauce. Glad we got to try it, but it was a one and done check off our travel list.
Two years running this was our favorite bifana. Location was a bit challenging as only the door leading into the restaurant was for locals while the window on the other side served all others. The challenge was the limited sidewalk in front and the lines extend across the street. People don't always realize they're standing in the middle of a street until they get honked at by a car. Menu was posted on the left behind the window. Plain and with cheese bifanas topped the menu but there were other choices as well like carne asada, egg and fish. Cash was the only tender accepted. The pork in the bifanas was constantly simmered and pulled out to make each sandwich individually. The bread was chibatta like and quite soft that enveloped the strips of pork. I added piri piri aauce and yellow mustard (big squirt bottles available on the counters to each side of the window) which gave it more flavor. A simple but great local sandwich. To avoid lines come at odd hours. I also came a little after lunch hour in moderate rain and there was just one person ahead of me.
Hands-down, one of the best things I tried in Lisbon. It is worth the wait. It is worth carrying cash. It is also worth the walk to get to this location. It is located slightly off of the Rossario Square area and it's very walkable within 10 minutes. The bifana was SO good. The pork was tender and juicy. Paired with the mustard and the sweet oil, it was fantastic. A beer also was just a great combination and a must because that's how the locals do it. The fact that it was only around five euros and one of the best places I've eaten in Lisbon, really says a lot. I will warn you depending on what time it is, expect to have a 20 minute wait minimum. English friendly, and service is fast.
Bifanas do Afonso is a staple Lisbon takeout spot tourist and locals love. The line can be very long so be prepared but it goes by very fast. I ordered the classic bifana, and it was very good. Thin slices of pork simmered in a flavorful north for hours and put on a kaiser bun. It's simple but the kind of simple that's perfect with every bite being messy, juicy, and packed with flavor.
We came to this bifana stand after hearing about it on social media. There was a long line when we arrived that only got longer as we waited. We finally got to the front after about 20 minutes or so of waiting. I ordered a classic bifana and my boyfriend ordered an al pastor sandwich. The bifana was good but a pretty skimpy portion of meat. I was surprised by this since I've seen photos of other bifanas here with a more balanced meat to bread ratio. The spicy mustard helped give the sandwich some moisture which was needed as the bread was a bit dry. The al pastor sandwich was not great - really tough, dry meat that needed a lot of hot sauce to be deemed edible. We ended up trying a few other bifana places while we were in town and this place had really nice flavor and a great price but the least amount of meat.
Tried this after walking around all day. For €9.50 for 2 Bifanas a water and a Coke Zero. Not too shabby. Food was good add the chili oil and mustard. Only wish they had some seats right out front. Are standing up. Service was friendly. Food came out quickly. Worth the hype.
Probably, the best bargain within all of Lisbon. The place is small, no seating. But the line keeps on going. There is no surprise since the wait is absolutely worth it. For only €25, we were able to get 5 sandwiches and 3 large beers. How can you beat that? The sandwich was really, really delicious. A touch of mustard was only needed to kick it up a notch. It is a must go-to spot if you're ever in Lisbon.
My wife and I were in Lisbon for a week and a buddy said I must get a bifana at this hole in the wall. We hopped on the 28 and rode it down a little since it was a little rainy and we walked up some hilly area about 4 blocks. There was a pretty good size line, but trust me, it moves fast. I quickly got up to the front and ordered a bifana with cheese and a beer. About 8 Euro after the beer I think, very reasonable and the service is curt, but friendly. I took my sandwich to a nearby outside bench and it was super full of pork and moist and sat atop the wonderful bread, matched with an ice cold lager. Heaven in Portugal for under 10 bucks! We were lucky, they sold out and closed ten minutes after I ordered!

We came here for breakfast and there was no line (when we passed by during lunch the line was SUPER LONG - so remember that). The pork stew sandwich (2.5) was so satisfying. They make it fresh right in front of you. The meat is stewing away in a pot and it's just delicious. It's just Portuguese bun and pork but it's addictive. Usually pork can be pretty dry but this wasn't dry at all. The chewiness of the bread and the tenderness of the pork went so well together. They have mustard on the table - remember to add some because it brings it up to a whole other level. I wanted to try their fried fish cake but I think they only serve it during lunch. I would definitely recommend this place. Tip: get lots of napkins because you'll need it when the juices start dripping down your arm read more

One of the things that we prioritize when traveling overseas is learning about the food and culture. Therefore, at the top of our itinerary when we arrived in Lisbon, was to go on a food and wine tour. Our third stop on the tour led us to As Bifanas do Afonso. Our tour guide ordered everyone on the tour a Bifana with a beer on the side (that should be made into a jingle!). The tour guide explained that Bifanas consists of slices of pork that are marinated with white wine and garlic. When the Bifanas arrived at our table, I have to respectfully admit, they looked bare. However, the key that unlocked the deliciousness of the sandwich was within arm reach on the table....piri-piri sauce! If you have not experienced the goodness of a Bifana or Chicken + piri-piri sauce, I highly recommend that you try it! Unfortunately, I cannot speak to the customer service of this establishment because our tour guide handled the transaction that secured the Bifanas and beer. However, I can speak to their delicious Bifanas! read more
Deal of the day: 2 great tasting bifanas + 1 small beer = 6.70 euros! After looking around for a budget friendly, simple place to have a quick brunch, we stumbled upon this place. It is quite popular and there was a queue but it moved reasonably quickly. There were 2 groups in front of us, and we waited for about 10 min to get to the front and get our food, but was totally worth it. Bifanas is a sandwich with slow cooked seasoned pork...you put a bit of yellow mustard and chili water, and it's great! Also went great with a small beer to wash it all down, even though it was still 11 am! ;) No need to eat fancy all the time, and sometimes finding these local, hole-in-the-wall places are the best! read more
Yummy. Pork was tender and the seasoning was superb. The roll absorbed some of the sauce and was great. I don't know what the liquid sauce I added, but it was a slow burn in spice. Quick service and incredibly reasonable in price. The shrimp pie I had was also delicious. Crispy exterior and flavorful sauce with shrimp. It tasted shrimpy in the best way possible. read more

I wanted to try this spot as it was all over websites, a very discreet place on the corner...make sure you don't make the mistake I did and wait at the window to order. Once inside it's simple, just order they'll make it, you pay (cash only) and you eat outside. The mustard and oil are a must! They were generous with the amount of pork they give, although the bread wasn't as soft as O Trevo. No complaints for €3! read more

by far the best bifana i've ever had! much less sweet and a bit spicier than the ones in Massachusetts/Rhode Island. by prepared to wait in line! (worth it) read more
Tried to go closer to closing, but they were already closed when I arrived! Tried a second time on a foodie tour and made it! We had the typical Bifana with a beer. The sandwich is good - pork and bread. It's simple, it's flavorful, and it's fast. A staple in Portuguese food. read more

Amazing value and taste! Friends and I got 3 bifanas for ~8 Euros and they came out within minutes. Wish I tried the Bifanas with cheese, but the hot sauce and mustard were enough to give it a kick too! Portugal is such a vibe and this place is a must visit for a classic Bifana outside. There's even a nice big bench out front to sit and enjoy your food. read more
For 2.5 euros, you can get a small sandwich that's a staple of Portuguese cuisine. The bifanas is a stewed pork sandwich with no frills. Simply go to the counter and make sure to look for the menu off to the side. It's hidden, which is kind of a pain if you're not local and don't know what to get. Lucky for you, I took a picture of the menu and posted it. I believe this place still remains cash only so make sure you've got some cash on hand. I stopped by an atm during my visit to the Castelo de Sao Jorge to prep for this. Exchange rate was 1.12 USD to 1 Euro and at the ATM I went to, I still had the 3% transaction fee. Just as a note I don't think you really need that much cash in Portugal since most places accept card so the so-so rates were fine by me. People tend to eat at the counter or at the plaza the little counter faces. Just make sure to get the mustard and some piri piri (hot chili oil) as needed. Also a good idea to pair this with some beer. Taste wise the bread was soft with ample flour on the outside. The pork was too salty for me so I wasn't a huge fan of this. Nevertheless it's cheap and there are other things on the menu if you don't like plain pork between bread. Wouldn't get again if I didn't have to, but if I needed something cheap, this is fine. read more

Tried the famous Bifana and it did not disappoint. Out of everything my bf and I ate on our trip to Portugal, he said this may have been #1. Way better than the other spots that sell this. It gets very busy with long lines, but moves fast. Cash only and no tables/chairs. Sit on a bench near the tree, steps or stand. Do not forget to put the mustard and piri piri sauce to enhance it! read more

If there's a line, it's definitely worth the wait. I recommend getting take-out, because this place is about as big as my bedroom (but gets infinitely more action). Arguably the best food I've had in portugal was their bifana. It was that good. The combo of mustard and chili sauce perfectly combined with the pork inside. The pork was super tender and seasoned extremely well and the bread complemented the other ingredients perfectly. The hype is real. read more

Soft bread, juicy beef, fast and friendly service. Went during fall and there was no line. read more
As Bifanas do Afonso has an amazing bifana sandwich. In a tiny corner location, the kitchen is a small area on the other side of the counter. Ask the man tending the bubbling pot for a bifana and a double espresso. The other side of the counter is a limited capacity eating area countertop that is standing room only for about just four people. Crusty bread with sliced pork stewed in pork gravy. Simplicity is rewarding sometimes. The pork has strong pork flavor from basting in its own juices. One sandwich is almost not quite enough. There are bottles of sweet mustard or spicy oil that you can squeeze onto the sandwich. The espresso is served in a little coffee cup on a saucer with a packet of sugar. This is a great way to start a morning. read more
Best bifanas in Lisbon! The other places don't even compare. We tried eating here as much as possible. The bread and meat is cooked so perfectly. You can tell it's a good spot since the locals come here. Prices are great. But it can get busy. Thankfully the staff are very swift so it keeps it moving. Be sure to try out the spicy oil and mustard! read more
Pork Sandwich Portuguese cuisine is known for many things including their Portuguese egg tarts but my favorite is finding where to eat bifana or the traditional pork slice sandwich One of the most popular spots in Portugal for bifanas is As Bifanas do Afonso It's a small spot with long queues and while it's accepted credit cards in the past, today it was cash only The wait is about 30 minutes and while the nearby seating is from another restaurant they are happy to serve you drink and snacks while you wait for your sandwich I tried the bifana with and without cheese but preferred it most without Either way, the key is plenty of chili oil and plenty of mustard to accentuate and enhance the well seasoned pork and soft bread Bifana €2,7 / Bifana com Queijo €3,8 As Bifanas do Afonso (Lisbon, Portugal) Seating is public seating outdoor only and payment is cash only. read more

The food is great, and I suggest adding mustard and spicy oil for your bifana. Service is fairly fast, and you have to eat at the small bar outside. This is a hole in the wall restaurant, but it is very good! read more
We stumbled upon the famous Bifanas and it did not disappoint! The line took about 20 minutes, and would occasionally have to break apart to let taxis through before re-forming again. Don't expect any seats to be available to eat upon either - I mistakenly sat at some of the chairs and tables a few feet away from the façade of the restaurant and found out after a few minutes it was for patrons of the cafe around the corner, just out of sight. The bifanas were very simple, but had something special about them. The bread texture is on the softer side between toasted crunchy and untoasted soft, and worked very well with the pork. We added some mustard and spicy sauce to ours, which imho enhanced the flavor. Order a beer to wash it down. Dirt cheap, and probably one of the best quick meals in Lisbon. A must visit. read more

Pass this place several times and it always had a line. I finally got their Bifana sandwich and tried their Green soup. The gentleman told me to just get without cheese (traditionally eaten without cheese). They had mustard and a chili sauce if you want to put in the sandwich. Sandwiches is very good and inexpensive. Less than 5 euros for the sandwich and sopa read more

Simple and delicious. Standing room only and some public seating, but honestly this place hits. I've only gotten the bifanas e quiejo but it's all I need. If you're hungry, want something quick, this is the place to go! Flavor was delicious as well, not too spicy, well seasoned pork, soft yet chewy bread. read more

Recommended from a reddit Lisbon thread and we saw lots of locals when we walked by this place everyday as it was near our Airbnb. It's a small mom and pop kind of shop (cash only) and offers little standing room inside. The bifanas were good alone but even better with the chili oil and mustard. The bread was crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside making it a perfect sponge to soak in the condiments. The meat is fresh. You can see them cook it in front of you and pull it out of the pot when they make your sandwich. The prices were also very fair. You can't ask for much more from a hole-in-the-wall place like this. The staff was incredibly friendly to us. We even made friends with the man behind the counter but forgot to ask for his name :( read more
