The shop opened at 12 and we got there at 12... there were already 2 others waiting to see her! The receptionist was very friendly and allowed us to wander and even recommended a nearby street fair to check out while we waited for our turn. We got called back as the first two people wrapped up and we filled out some forms and waited until Lorelei was ready for us. The shop was clean and everyone was very friendly. We loved how our tattoos turned out and Lorelei was awesome! She did an amazing job and made us feel safe and comfortable the entire time. Highly recommend! 5/5 in cleanliness, location and service! I came here to get three ear piercings by Joey with the help of his apprentice. They spent over 30 minutes just measuring the distance of the piercings to make sure it was perfect. To note, I had four other lobe piercings (2 on each ear) from a different tattoo/piercing store but they didn't measure at all while they were making the piercings, so it was great to finally experience that level of professionalism. They made me feel very comfortable and assured the entire time and made sure my piercings were all cleaned up before I left. In light of COVID, it was clear they are taking safety measures seriously, so that was great to see! read more

Very cute place in Somerville, the aesthetics were clean, welcoming and bright. The receptionist was a bit dismissive and acted surprised to see me walk into the space, not sure why. She was very professional and distracted me during the whole tattooing process which made the pain bearable. Worst Chinese food ever! Do not recommend! Our server, Lou, was atrocious and was wearing gold lamè shorts which were extremely inappropriate in a food establishment. They never look down on anyone for not being hardcore enough, but the people (plural) who originally recommended Artisanal to me *are* hardcore. My friends and I set up an appointment a week ahead of time, because the place was booked. It cost 50 bucks for all three of us, and we gave our artist, Lou Morgue, an idea of what we wanted. A week later he had drawn up some really good stuff. we started at 4pm, and he did not stop until 1am when he had finished all three of us. He is very skilled, and it seems the other artists are too. Our ink turned out greater than we had hoped, and he seemed to really take pride in his work. It was a little bit pricey, but I you get what you pay for, and with a tattoo, you have to go for quality. I highly recommend this place. read more

Got a very simple pair of second holes in my ears today at this pleasant shop. I didn't have an appointment, but did call an hour in advance to make sure a piercer was available. I didn't experience any kind of wait which was a plus, especially for a walk-in. Chris was my piercer, and was kind, knowledgeable, and walked me through the entire process. I had a walk in tattoo done by Ali, it was an 8-bit Tardis. 8-bit tattoos aren't easy to do because the lines have to be very straight, Ali had excellent line work, very clean and crisp. She also had many great suggestions on the location of where the tattoo was going to go as well as the placement. She was very attentive and personable, I had a lot of fun getting tattooed by her and can't be more pleased with my new ink! Last year I had Swift do the tattoo below, and returned last week so he could do another portrait of my dogs sitting by the lake. Swift is a gifted artist and the fine line detail is incredible. Unlike a lot of animal portrait tattoos you see online, which sort of resemble the real thing but are only approximations of them, these are spot on. I travel a lot, and for the second tattoo I could have had one of the big-name artists in Vegas do it but I went back to Swift because I knew that no one could do it better. I will always appreciate his skill and dedication! (The paws in the tattoo below were done by Fast Ali, who has since moved on from Artisanal. It's freshly inked here and the photo isn't quite in focus, so it doesn't begin to show the fine lines and shading that make it so impressive in real life.) read more

I am in the process of a Calf Sleeve done by Chris. It was started in another shop and is ongoing at Artisanal. The difference from shops is tremendous. Within 10 minutes of being at the shop I had spoken to each artist at least once. I was asked if I wanted coffee or snacks by 3 different people there. The atmosphere is welcoming and the staff friendly. I have followed my tattoo artist from one shop to another and the change in atmosphere from that shop to artisanal is night and day.
