Meh. Out on the…read moremotorcycle on a fall weekend, zipping through Dolgeville and feeling peckish - and really looking for a small, local eatery. Green Acres looked perfect at 40mph so I pulled in for a late lunch on a Friday, somewhat surprised by the mostly full parking lot. Upstate NY hamburgers are strange, in that they usually come AB - Absolutely Bare - without tomato, onion, ketchup, or any other condiment, vegetable, or accessory. Maybe a pickle or two. This always catches me when I order, so be sure to specify your hammie when you order here. Besides this minor hiccup, my burger and fries arrived, after a loooong enough delay to have been prepared fresh - but instead were victims of the warming bin. Cool-ish hamburger patty, served AB (see above) along with a scant order of not-fresh french fries along with a not-bottomless (but priced as-if) diet Pepsi. Service was indifferent, food average, upstate premium pricing fully engaged.

Everything about this was excellent...til it wasn't. Overall, our experience was positive. Food was…read more(for the most part) good and it was a nice atmosphere. First disappointment was that entrees come with a choice of soup or salad. It was Caesar salad or tomato soup- both of which contained dairy so I couldn't have either and was not offered another option. The salmon was excellent but 2 bites in I realized the rice was partly crunchy. Told the server and was not offered a new portion or another option. Then coffee comes and upon pouring the cream in, it immediately separated. Was at least brought another cup. Then the bill comes and NOTHING was comped. Now, any one of these experiences would have perhaps been a minor inconvenience but you add up all three and I would have minimally appreciated an $8 dessert comped on an almost $200 bill. Would probably not be back.

The pub and dining room were full. It was the Polish buffet night . Everything went well except for one thing. A bar patroon was grazing at the buffet using his finger to sample and eating them at the buffet. He visited the buffet at least 3 times. The last time he began making sausage sandwiches at the bread station and proceeded to leave the restaurant with everything folded up in a cloth napkin. In the future I would suggest monitoring the buffet. Some people might need some supervision on etiquette.

In other words, I appreciate authenticity. The Tavern on the Gorge boasted a friendly staff, good bar food and a welcoming atmosphere with a good assortment of beverage offerings. I happened to catch this place during a night whereby they had comedians from NYC. The comedians were very good and got plenty of laughs poking fun at the Afirondack lifestyles and values. The patrons appreciated this ribbing and a great night of unexpected fun was a much needed release for me and my wife. We will return on our next trip to the North Country to recapture this homespun experience.

Chalk it up to Upstate, NY doing what Upstate, NY does best: Cold Beer and Chicken Wings. And in…read morethis case, it should be Chicken Wings first and cold beer second. You can certainly pull up a bar stool and drop a Utica Club in a can or get a Saranac draft. No issue there. But what you really want to be doing is ordering wings. Seriously...get in car...drive to Prospect...order wings. Look, you can get caught up in wings from Buffalo, Rochester, New York City (not SF because there is not a good wing in this entire city...although at least Kezar makes an effort)...whatever. They all take a back seat to what you get in almost every establishment in Syracuse and Utica. Let's put it this way...it's HARD to be at the top or near the top (which Tavern on the Gorge is) in the wing category in Central NY. Just WAAAY too much competition and people in CNY like their wings. But Tavern on the Gorge...they get a high seat in the Top 5 category and my debate upon leaving the bar was whether or not they were number 1. Wing sauce is apparently a tough thing. I don't think it's a tough thing, but to most bars and restaurants it's essentially the toughest thing they must do. NOTHING varies more establishment to establishment than a chicken wing. Certainly there are some places trying to put their own spin on it (90% of these folks are just making a mistake btw). Not a good idea fyi. The wing sauce at TOTG is as close to perfect as your going to get. Depending on who you talk to, you'll get differing opinions on wing sauce. But in general, the diehards know the base recipe and an ingredient that can have a major impact is butter/margarine. So those wings sauces you see that have sort of a heavier texture (heavy being almost creamy)...they crank up the butter/margarine. Not a bad thing. The place in direct competition with TOTG does this and those wings are ridiculous as well. But TOTG does things a little differently and what you end up with is a sauce with slightly less creaminess and amazing tang. And they don't skimp on the heat...in fact, they dial it to perfection. Don;t worry about going in and having to order mild because you don't. If you don;t want to go hot...go medium...that's fine as well. But just know that Upstate does it's wings the right way...in a fryer, with ridiculously good sauce. TOTG has it nailed. Great place to grab a couple of UC's or a Saranac and eat wings. These are great wings. Period.

My wife and I have dined there many times now! The owner Gail, her daughter Julie and the chef, Nate are great people. Warm and friendly. The restaurant/bar is warm and cozy with a big fireplace on the far wall - always roaring in the winter. Great place to grab a drink and a few appetizers after doing some of the local hikes. If you can make it for dinner - do it!!! They "regular" menu features thick burgers, Fried Haddock Fish Fry, Clam or scallop baskets etc. Their rotating specials are always fantastic - alway cooked well, spiced perfectly and nice portions! They often have meatloaf, pork or chicken parmesan, smoked ribs, beef stroganoff and other great dishes. If you do go and they have their NY Strip Steak on the menu - you are blessed. I have had steaks in Chicago, London, NYC, Dallas - lots of places. I can honestly say the the steak at PLI is in my top 3. It's shockingly good!!! Nate (Chef) told me they source their steaks from a local source and are aged, hand sorted and cut. Also, Julia has started to introduce many new cocktails.
