Food was terrible, the lobster was overcooked to the point of being uneatable, and the steak looked like it had been boiled it was blah no flavor/ seasoning tasted like something you will get at a hospital. Originally I had asked for pull pork sandwich, was brought meatballs, the waitress insisted that I may had asked for the pull pork but she saw me point to the meatball line, going back and forth about it. I cancel my plate all together. It took over 55 minutes ( for rare steak/lobster) and hubby had to ask front desk for our food, because our waiter did a disappearing, act to be told it was taking long because of the lobster.. they weren't lying tho, they incinerated that thing! it was our first and last time at $86 we could had better at any fast food joint. The place looks and feels dated, it was mostly older ppl and some couples with kids, that should've been a red flag! The fact almost everyone was over 70! The only thing they had going was the view of the canal, but not even, the windows were foggy and dirty. It smelled a mix of stale air, cigarettes and air deodorizer. Stopped here on a bus trip. Service was quick and efficient and we were provided a buffet served by staff. It included mashed potatoes, Turkey and stuffing, cranberry sauce, a small salad d a beverage in a disposable cup. Afterwards, we were served a small warm apple cobbler. Food was okay and there was wine and beer if you wanted to purchase it. There was ample time to wander over to the very large store within the building which has on display many items from local vendors. Featured are local items like the Wizard of Oz themed Knick knacks, Herkimer T-shirts and keychains, etc., maple syrup, candies and jewelry. From the Grille you go onto the Erie Canal Cruise boat. The dock is outside the Grille so I imagine this is all under the same ownership. Fun day. read more

Apparently you need reservations on a Wednesday night, off season. Hostess will refuse to sit you without them, and there is no online reservation system. None of this was mentioned when we called ahead the day of to confirm the hours of operation. What a find... This great little restaurant sitting along side the thruway is amazing to say the least. The hostess and service were over the top friendly and attentive and the does not take a back seat to the service!! The food was fresh, flavorful, and plentiful.. the only bad thing is we are from Rochester and not closer. But one thing for sure it will definitely be a must stop when ever we are out that way. They changed the haddock sandwich from the menu description, and my friend said it was delicious. I had the special wrap, crab meat wrap, and it was also delicious. We asked for the french fries well-done and they were crispy on the outside and hot on the inside. Perfect. We shared the apple pie for dessert which was homemade by the owner's wife, I think, and it was delicious. And I am a stickler when it comes to apple pie. The Waterfront Grille is the prefect meeting place for meeting my college friend when I am back visiting family in Syracuse, NY. Herkimer is halfway between Syracuse and Schenectady and the food and atmosphere along the Erie canal is excellent. On Friday, April 21st, my friend and I met for lunch and I had brought along some special letters to share with my friend that my father had written to me on his way to Korea in 1952. I was only 2 months old at the time, so these letters were very special to me. Upon returning to Syracuse that afternoon, I realized that my letters and transcribed index cards were missing. I called the restaurant and spoke to Tammy and asked if anyone had seen my letters. It was their busiest time during the dinner rush, but Tammy took my name and phone number and said she would have someone take a look outside when the busy time was over. She called me back a short while later to explain that they had found an empty envelope and my index cards scattered in the parking lot, but not my special letters. As sad as I was at the time, I thanked her and felt that at least I had those letters for as long as I had. While out shopping later that evening, I received another call from Tammy saying that she and her staff had gone out with flashlights and found my letters. The letters were under parked cars and had tire tracks on their envelopes, but otherwise they were still in great shape. I was totally amazed that Tammy and her staff would go the extra effort they did for me. In these days where customer service isn't what it once was, these people are surely wonderful. As I drove back toe Herkimer the next morning, I was more emotional at the fact of getting my letters back than I was when I thought they were lost Thank you from the bottom of my heart read more

Wow! What an amazing place! Highly recommend to anyone visiting the diamond mines or just in the area. The theming is very cute and the look out onto the water is just beautiful. I had the fried ravioli. It was a perfect size and tasted amazing. Someone with me ordered the pulled pork they also enjoyed it a lot. I tried some of the fries and was really impressed with the flavor. Someone else with me had a chicken sandwich. He enjoyed his meal as well. To finish it off we shared the crème brûlée. My boyfriend and I came here for lunch on a road trip as recommended by New York Upstate. We had the meatball and haddock sandwiches. The meatballs were homemade on top garlic bread slices and smothered in sauce with a side of french fries, which were perfectly fried. The meatballs could have used more seasoning (salt and basil would be a good start). Overall, the sandwich was good. The fresh fried haddock fillet was larger than the roll. We ordered it with lettuce, but it also came with cheese and tartar sauce. Unlike the meatballs, the roll was deliciously seasoned with garlic butter, and the cheese tantalized my umami sense. The tartar sauce complemented the other flavors with a hint of tang. The side coleslaw was refreshing with low mayo but unremarkable. Dessert was the highlight. We ordered the Tartufo, an Italian gelato. Two gelato flavors, one was chocolate, with a cherry in the middle, covered by a chocolate shell, more chocolate syrup (likely Hershey's), and whipped cream. It was yummy! The dessert was definitely ordered from outside the restaurant, but was worth it. Service was slow, but our waitress was nice. She's the one who recommended the Tartufo, and she was right. Don't miss it! As a bonus the restaurant is located in the same building as a store with lots of New York souvenirs, such as local food products and soaps. When we went, there was a lot of Wizard of Oz paraphernalia because Frank Baum lived in the area and had close ties to the Mohawk Valley. One of the local stores was going out of business, so this store received much of its merchandise to sell, including lifelike statues of Wizard of Oz characters. They also offer cruises on the canal. I have traveled for 20 + years back and forth on the NYS Thruway. All during that time, I have looked down off the highway onto this waterfront restaurant and thought, "I'll stop there next time". Last night was the time I decided to stop. My wife and adult son were returning from a funeral in Albany, NY and decided to give this place a try.... OMG....WE ALL FELT THE SAME WAY AS WE ENTERED THE PLACE. There was a sense of nostalgia as we entered with the music from the 60's, tables, chairs and decorations were PERFECTLY CLEAN, NEAT AND ORDERLY, but were 1960's. The servers and hostess were spectacular and very welcoming. My son and I ordered the NY Strip on the bone with twice baked potatoes, salad and REAL GARLIC BREAD. My wife had the baked haddock with crab-meat crust. The food was served ultra hot and my son and I both looked at each other and said, "OMG, no one serves steak like this anymore. The steaks were buttered, bone was crispy and the meat was SPECTACULAR. Most tender old fashioned steak house steak I have had in 30 YEARS. My wife's fish was done to perfection and excellent, tender and very tasty. Believe me when I say this, I don't hold back opinions... This was and is the BEST place I have been in 10 years in terms of food. The twice baked potatoes was home made and delicious. The garlic bread was so good I ate one basket myself [pig]....we ordered two. A family excursion brought us to the area, and my sister, who had dined at Waterfront Grille before, suggested we have lunch here. I pretty much have to agree with her overall thoughts on the place. One of the best parts of your dining experience will be a view of the Mohawk River - nice even in blah weather. The food was fine. As I was looking around, my thought was, "This place has the feel of the type of place you'd bring your parents." Lo and behold, my mom was with us, and she did like it, so yay? The menu has what you would consider traditional "American" cuisine and what I would call "safe" seafood choices. For lunch this included a variety of burgers, salads, sandwiches, and fried seafood options. One of the day's burger specials featured cheeseburgers with Monterey Jack cheese, so 2 of us ordered that, one medium, one well. The only other topping on the burgers is lettuce. After biting into our burgers, I noticed mine - the one done "medium" - was cooked just as well as the well-done one, not a trace of pink in the center. The burgers come with home fries instead of fries. These had a rich, buttery taste and thankfully were not greasy. But they were a bit inconsistent in their done-ness. It also looks like the portion of actual potato you get is smaller than what you'd get with a side of french fries. Service was attentive and fun. Very pleased with service (Samantha), food and view. We waited about 10-15 mins for a canal window view and browsed and shopped at the adjoining gift shop, which is large and interesting. Shared with Mom the chicken Caesar salad, Utica greens and wings. Salad had very nicely seasoned chicken and was overall good quality food, worth the money. We were driving to the Glimmerglass show on a Friday, figuring that we would get off the thruway at about noon. Having in the past found out (the hard way) that, aside from 2 rather dubious-looking places in Richfield Springs, there ain't squat between Mohawk and Cooperstown for lunch. So, it was between this place and the diner in Herkimer. You can't complain about location the location of this place, being immediately off the thruway (from the exit, you go straight into the parking lot), and having a view overlooking the canal. Unfortunately, while the view is good, the food isn't, and the seats are especially uncomfortable. I ordered a margherita pizza, and my partner ordered a clam roll. His meal was bland, over-breaded, and a bit greasy. My pizza was made on flat garlic bread, with some tough, institutional-style cheese, and far too much of a rather bland sauce on top. The cheese came off in one piece, dripping sauce all over everything. And, it was quite obvious by the lack of any browning that they had neither a true pizza oven, or even a pizza stone. The price wasn't bad, and the location was good,but I assume that the bar is the primary draw for this place. I have vacationed in the area with my family for years. We have been to this restaurant several times. It leaves a lot to be desired. The location is fantastic, and presumably a lot of their business comes from the Erie Canal tour. While the gift shop next to it is impeccable and well maintained, the restaurant interior is strange mashup of different styles. A good portion of it looked dated and not so clean. The chairs are not comfortable. I've never had an issue with the wait staff. They have always been generally polite and attentive. The food is the real let down. It is very inconsistent. The style of food is a mix between classic American and American Italian. It ranges from decent tasting, tiny portion, fresh dishes to mediocre, under seasoned, greasy spoon style entrees. I could understand the smaller portions on specials and fresh food if the prices were good, but this place is rather pricey. Much higher than than one would expect from this quality food. Personally, I believe these people think they are doing good work, but this place just doesn't cut it. I've managed to sneak a few peeks into the kitchen, and they seem to work hard. They seem to just be misguided in their effort. There aren't many options for this type of food in the area, which is most likely why it stays afloat. Honestly, I would recommend this place at this time to anyone. With a small interior revamp, more focused menu, and lower prices, this place could actually be a gem. read more

We got here around 8:45pm on a Friday night. Took a little while to get seated and served drinks. The restaurant was about 1/3 full with a busy bar. Atmosphere was calm, music was lame, but at a good volume. None of the candles (which are on all of the tables) were lit, which seemed a little weird. We ordered the porterhouse and lollipop lamb chops (part of the special), with mozzarella sticks and caprese salad for starters. The apps were awesome - flavorful and even tasted the lemon seasoning on the tomatoes. We also had tomato soup that was very good and perfectly creamy. The porterhouse was covered in mushrooms, onions and roasted peppers which made it even better. The meat quality was around 6/10 because of fat content, but the lamb was high quality and perfectly cooked. Experience was about $100. We would come back again for a special occasion. read more

We should have figured that this was going to be a challenge when whoever took our reservation wrote down "Atlas" instead of "Alice." There were 14 of us. We were told that our table would be divided between two servers, but that didn't happen. When I asked about speaking to the manager to see if we could get things straightened out I was told there wasn't one. This is a pretty special place. It all starts with the view - right on top of the scenic Mohawk River. Gorgeous vistas and a comfortable atmosphere that is spiffy, yet not stuffy. The menu is incredibly varied, with steaks and chops, fish, veal dishes and much more. Traditional marinara sauce is delicious - lets the food flavors shine without overpowering the dishes. I had the veal Milanese and it was excellent. Great selection of appetizers, too. All around a great place for tourists and locals alike. Very popular spot for boaters on the river. I just can't give this place any more than three stars. My fish sandwich was decent but wasn't anything more than that. The wife got a chicken sandwich of some kind and I could tell by the look on her face she wasn't happy with it. She pulled the chicken piece out of it and it looked about like the bottom of my shoe. On the plus side my French fries were very good and the girl that waited on us was friendly and efficient. We will look around for some other place next time. read more
