We are on our second property in Chicago and have for one reason or another had to hire more than…read moreour fair share of contractors. We've found that there are plenty of good contractors who do good work and, if you do your due diligence up front, things will generally work out. However, Kucera Construction are the first exceptional contractor we've hired. They were above and beyond anything else we've experienced in the city of Chicago. This was the biggest project we've taken on yet - a kitchen remodel that involved demolition of one wall. We ended up hiring Peter and his crew for a few reasons: 1. It was clear he was a problem solver and detail oriented - taking out one of the walls meant extra support would need to be added. All the other 4 contractors said we'd need to add a post without exploring. He was the only one who looked at the wall in detail during the estimation process (going upstairs and to the basement to check it out). He said we may need a post but he thought we might not...end result: no post! We also wanted to remove the existing tiled floor and replace by running wood floor from elsewhere on the floor to create a consistent look...all other contractors said this could not be done. Peter said it could and made it happen. 2. Detailed quote: Every task was line itemed, which created transparency at the outset. We were able to take out aspects of the job that we felt were not worth it. 3. Pricing: Most of the contractors came in at roughly the same price but Peter's included the flooring and no post mentioned (unlike the other contractors). It took 3 months for Peter to start the job after we hired him (this was mostly due to our schedule). He was also up front that he was fully booked for a while, to me that's a good sign. He told us everything we needed to get ready before he did (it was our first kitchen remodel so this guidance was very helpful). Peter estimated 4-6 weeks for the job. It took just over 5. Every stage of the process was planned to ensure maximum efficiency. Our neighbors who had taken on a smaller kitchen remodel at the same time couldn't believe how much they got done in the time they did. His crew were there every day (except the days we didn't have the resources he needed...our fault not his) to ensure he met this deadline. All his workers were polite, non-obtrusive and respectful. They kept mess to a minimum throughout. He was good at keeping to the budget. We ended up paying more than we were quoted for but this was due to unforeseen issues that were out of his control and items we added during the process. Both were fair. He also gave credits where he'd overestimated original pricing as he went through the job. Peter's communication throughout the process was excellent. He would check we were happy with every little thing (lighting positioning, recessed lighting fixtures, light switch types, even hood height etc.) before proceeding. We are so happy with the end result: our new kitchen is amazing and is surpasses our vision for the space. The quality of the work is outstanding. We are so pleased we hired Kucera Construction. They are an exceptional contractor.

Choosing Peter / Kucera Construction for our project was the best decision we made. We did a full…read moregut renovation + addition and after meeting with several contractors Peter was the obvious choice. His estimate was extremely detailed to where you knew exactly what you were paying for on each line item (which left for minimal surprises throughout the entire project). His pricing is competitive and the work his team does is just incredible. He has a large team (which helps get things done FAST) and all of the guys are super kind, hardworking and skilled. I can't say enough positive things about his team and all of his subcontractors. This was our first time renovating a home and we would have been so lost without Peter. He helped guide us through the entire process, never got irritated by my endless questions or changes, and gave such valuable feedback/guidance on miscellaneous items that I couldn't make my mind up on. He is communicative, reliable, trustworthy and just an all around good person. I was so nervous selecting a GC after hearing so many nightmare stories, and could not be more thankful we found Peter and that he took us on as a client. We are in love with the finished product and would choose Peter again in a heartbeat for any future projects.

The worst painter I ever had in all my 5 houses. Beware like the one review said. I wish I would…read morehave listened but I was recommend Dave by Tony the owner of premium cabinets that said dave is also a contractor. I gave dave 4 thousand dollars to paint an empty 800 square foot condo with no furniture and he didn't finish painting kitchen or hallways or closet shelves. It was an easy job. But it was a nightmare. I have a list a mile long. The straw that broke the camels back was him doing something simple like putting a rod in my closet to hang my cloths. Well I put my last piece of clothing on rod and the whole closet rods and brackets came out of wall on top of me. He came back after his vacation 1 week later and fixed it then he measured wrong and I couldn't open the drawers from dresser inside of closet that he knew I had to open the drawers. So that being said I couldn't trust Dave installing my cabinets for premier. He can't even hang a closet rod let alone cabinets. Hit or miss kinda a guy. Live and learn. Reviews are for a reason. Next time I will listen. That was a lot of money for me Beware.

He has remodeled a ton of kitchens, so he foresees most issues before they arise. He had a great relationship with our kitchen designer (Kitchen Design Partners - Nancy Jacobson), so the entire process was painless and often didn't require much effort on my part. Jim is also creative - he came up with the perfect solution to fix a weird nook that resulted from some demolition work. Jim was very quick to respond to any questions, and always made me aware of the work schedule. Jim's estimate broke everything down nicely allowing us to see how much some extra work would cost so that my wife and I could decide to move forward with some projects and forego others that were outside our budget. But most importantly everything looks amazing. The picture says more than I ever could. I will definitely work with Jim again in the future for any remodeling needs.

Update 7/18/23: B quality, D service and A+ (premium) pricing. We were given several promises and…read more"no, problem, we can do that" sort of talk, and later on as the project went on and invoices were paid (we always paid on time), some of those promises were magically no longer possible. We paid on time, always, but timelines by Jim were not kept. I do not mean timelines related to supply chain issues or them being busy....we totally understood that. What I mean is that he would say he would call/text at a certain day or time and we would never hear back. Sometimes it would take a MONTH to hear (no joke), it would take a MONTH to get an invoice. It took from June to November to address our punch list which just took 1.5 days of actual work on site. Most of the work was great and good quality, and they clean up after themselves well every day. However, some of the subcontractors would lean materials against newly painted walls and they did leave pizza boxes lying around and fast food containers at times when they left for the day. As the project came to a close, the response time was longer and longer. There's no excuse for it, but I think I would use them again as the work is good, as long as you are very patient when you don't hear back as promised. Also, we had our cabinets repainted and the subcontractor had to touch them up after we noticed several unpainted areas. Since the project we have also noticed that they did not move the refrigerator to paint the walls next to the refrigerator and you can see if you stand in front of the refrigerator the old paint color next to the new paint color on the wall. I will have to have someone to come in and fix that. Additionally, the tiles in the bathroom were installed with bubbles in the caulk. They did fix that. Jim also told me they could not remove the rust from the door hinges on the doors of the bathrooms without taking the doors off the hinges, and that it would be a huge undertaking. Since then, we've had the building superintendent take a look, and he was able to remove the rest from the door hinges in a couple of hours without removing the doors. Cost me $150. Easy. ***UPDATE: I would not use this company again. Jim told me point blank at the initial meeting they could move a thermostat from the middle of a wall (eye sore) to the corner so I could have a cleaner look. This was something I expressed wanted and was told it was no problem. After the contracts are signed, and after invoice after invoice was paid on time, I would bring up the thermostat being moved, and it was always pushed to the side in the conversation. Eventually, I was told by Jim that it would be too expensive to do and far too difficult. In the end, the thermostat stayed in the same location and they replaced it with a new thermostat of their choosing. The thermostat they chose and installed has poor reviews online. The thermostat has not been giving accurate readings since April and we reached out to some HVAC companies about coming by to check it out. Three companies came and all said our HVAC system was fine, but the new thermostat Jim installed was faulty and was the problem. There was no way for us to get an accurate reading. I texted Jim the situation and told him that the HVAC company we trusted and we have used before was on site and was willing to install a new thermostat including labor for $300. He texted me back saying that he was at a sporting event in WI and would call me as soon as he could. In my text, I asked him how he would like me to proceed, and if I should have the new thermostat installed since the HVAC guy was already here and if they would reimburse me or if they wanted to come by and replace it later. I never heard back from Jim, ever. Not a peep. So unprofessional. I have passed along his information to 3 designers as I'm in the industry. This is not how you treat customers. The HVAC company came back days later and installed a new thermostat - now everything is fine. I paid for this out of pocket. Still, nothing from Jim.

We were so impressed with his work that we hired him to paint our duplex when we were ready to put it on the market. The color he chose made the duplex look so nice. We also hired Donchris Designs for several projects for the Highland Park home we purchased. They remodeled two of our bathrooms, put in a kitchen island, resurfaced the fireplace, installed screen doors, put down carpet in the master bedroom, and installed recess lighting. He did such a wonderful job. The "designs" part of Donchris Designs is invaluable to us. My husband and I are not very creative when it comes to designing our renovations. We basically told Don what we general like (colors, styles, shapes) and he designed the bathroom, fireplace, kitchen, etc. based on our feedback. Then he brought samples for us so we can visualize how the finish product will look like. We went with all his suggestions and were very pleased with the result. It was nicer then we can imagine. At all times, Don was meticulous, professional and very knowledgeable. Most of all, we really feel that they genuinely care. We were so pleased with Donchris Designs that we recommended them to my sister and brother-in-law a year ago when they were looking to remodel their bathrooms. Since then, Donchris Designs remodeled three of their bathrooms and recently finished their basement. My family and I wholeheartedly recommend Donchris Designs.
