Artemis Spa I had booked an hour massage each for my best friend and me. We were given a survey to answer questions which would determine the massage we would each get. This was done easily by email and We got different massages. When we got there, they were very welcoming. We didn't even have time to sit down before they called our names, into the lightly lit room. The staff made us very comfortable, and gave us each specific yet easy to follow directions. Each masseuse had us undress to our comfort level, w towels and comfortable beds. They also Give us plenty of time to do so and then knocked and requested to come in when it was time. At first I was concerned that 60 minutes would be way too long in that I might get bored or restless, but that was definitely not the case. I have many physical issues, as does my best friend, and It was strange when he started to massage me because it didn't feel like he was really doing anything. sometimes just kind of like lifting up my hip a couple inches or my shoulder but it really did feel better afterwards. Tony really did seem to do something in manipulating or massaging my hip and shoulder. I can't tell you enough how wonderful this massage was. It was never painful, and Tony asked me several times if the pressure was OK. Which it was. He was very appropriate and I would highly recommend Tony at Artemis spa. I've had many massages and none have come even close to what I would call a medical massage. Not chiropractic, but just perfect touching in every place anyway. We both had different massages that were based upon our survey as I said earlier and we were both extremely pleased and both agree that these were the best massages we had ever had. The surroundings are modern, clean and calming I have to firstly think Tony for the best massage I've ever had. Secondly I have to apologize greatly for the dirty feet and I unknowingly had. I had on sandals and had been walking through the wet park earlier. I couldn't give this place 100 stars so I have to settle with five stars on Yelp, but I would definitely advise that you go here. On a sidenote we have been staying at the Reynolds mansion. I cannot attest for their masseuse as we had booked with her but she was on vacation that week. It is a little difficult to find if you're not from the area but it's definitely worth it. read more

Location is a huge pain because you have to find somewhere to park on the street. Or in a garage. The inside is gorgeous. From the moment you walk in you feel like you're in a Asian spa. I had reflexology done there and it was decent. Not as much pressure as I would have liked. Very relaxing. I go to another location in town as well sometimes just because it's easier to park, but it doesn't have this amazing spa theme throughout the office. read more

I used to love this business, and a few of their therapists are really excellent, but they changed their location at the last minute prior to my appointment (less than 24 hours in advance of it, in fact) and then charged me a fee for cancelation, because I didn't give them 24-hour advance notice that I could not make it. They didn't do me the same courtesy, even though I have a condition that prevents me from driving (I used to walk to their previous location). This was not by choice. I would have gone if I could have arranged transportation but using a disruption they planned themselves to deny me service and then charge me for that denial is not the kind of character that any business should have. read more

By far the best massage I've ever had. I have now gone to Tony twice and each time have left feeling like a million bucks! I highly recommend and cannot believe I haven't discovered this place sooner! Best in the county! read more

Wonderful little studio. Very accommodating to a same-sex couple. Comfortable, peaceful environment and an excellent massage. Best I've had yet. I've had massages on cruises and at the Bedford springs- Artemis beat them all. My fiancée and I had female therapists. If you're looking for a firm massage, do not think only a male can do that for you. The female therapists we had gave excellent firm massages with just the right amount of pressure. We highly recommend Artemis! read more

I booked a 60mn Deep Tissue with Muscle Magic add-on (as part of Therapeutic Thursday) with Lynn, and she was incredible! She applied the perfect amount of pressure throughout the entire time. I've been to many other massage places before, and this is one definitely of the best I've been thus far. read more

never in my life have i ever received such an unpleasant and disappointing massage. I did the couples massage with my partner, he said he enjoyed it (his masseuse was emily) i absolutely didnt enjoy it (mine was kayleigh). at no point did she actually massage me. she would press into my muscles and then pause for a couple minutes then do it again on every part of my body until she was done. like she never massaged me shed just press into my muscles with her finger tips then stay there for awhile. also her nails were sharp and kept digging into my neck. honestly i left with more discomfort than i had before. genuinely the worst massage ice ever had in my whole life, im beyond upset that i spent my time and money here. read more

The only place in State College I'll go for a massage. Such an amazing, quiet, and peaceful atmosphere. They have heated beds which is an amazing touch! I also came here for a couple's massage on Valentine's Day and it was just perfect. I always leave this place feeling refreshed and relaxed! read more

Artemis is the ONLY place I will go to get a massage. I have seen most of the therapists and they are all very professional and highly skilled. I always feel very comfortable there. Since my last review, I've tried ashiatsu (by Amy) and structured integration (by Alexa) - both amazing! Ashiatsu really helps release tension and combat soreness or tightness in your muscles. The long, broad strokes with her feet could put me to sleep! She really knows what she's doing and I always enjoy every minute. Structured integration, to me, is honing in on the problem areas and working them out. Alexa is great at finding my tight, sore spots and knots and releasing them. She incoporates the right amount of pressure and instructs your breathing to get the best results. This has really helped me as the massages I used to get elsewhere (full of fluff) didn't do me much good. In this approach, the areas in need are targetted and other areas are touched, but there is no wasted time. Also now at Artemis are meditation and belly dancing classes. I've partipcated in both and had a great time and learned ALOT! What a great group of people at Artemis! I'll continue to be a very happy customer! I plan on taking my boyfriend for valantines day. ;-) read more

I had an amazing first experience at Artemis last night - Kayleigh was a miracle worker. I enjoyed an extreeeemely relaxing 1 hour Shiatsu massage with 30 minute hot stone (a must try). As a new mom to a 20lb six month old, it was VERY much needed. She focused on my lower back...legs...neck...all the right places! To be honest, I have never felt so relaxed during (or after) a massage quite like I did last night. This was also my first time trying hot stones and I am hooked! They also promote doTERRA essential oils, which I am a huge advocate of and highly suggest as an add-on to any massage/service. Scheduling was easy breezy. You can fill everything out right from their website (paperless!) and do all your correspondence (even chat with them directly) via email. The service at Artemis really is top-notch. A friendly, accommodating, and knowledgeable team. From the moment you walk into the studio, you feel at ease...it's soothing, quiet, and calming. I am already looking into booking my next visit. Ya'll ROCK! read more

I tried the coconut oil head massage and reflexology add-ons with Nicole. It was a really relaxing experience which I'd recommend. Aromatherapy is complimentary and the "breathe" scent was really nice. Nicely designed rooms as well. read more

I've come here for massages every once and a while, and this place is amazing. Completely relaxing, catering to your needs, and isn't outrageously expensive. The Swedish massages are great! read more

Best massage in town!(!!) I love the atmosphere: you're the only client in the studio at the time of your massage, so there's utter privacy. It doesn't have...how can I put it...frou-frou decor? It's cool without being pretentious. Same goes for the music they play--let's skip the new age or classical and play some Sigur Ros, shall we? They seem to agree with me. First time I've ever gotten a deep tissue massage that was actually DEEP. Thank you, Lynn--you're the best. The owner's a sweetie who remembers you and talks to you every time. Good prices. Right on Beaver Avenue in downtown State College. read more

To refer to Artemis as only a massage sells short the experience they work so hard to provide. Not only is it an amazing massage, but they take pride in creating an environment in which you can truly relax. As others mentioned, they take only one client at a time (up to two people), which means they are focused solely on you. No loud noises, no interruptions, no reason to think of anything beyond relaxation. And, as mentioned, the massage is fantastic. Also, the owner and all the people who work there are really cool; very down to earth and engaging. If you want a massage in State College there is no alternative to Artemis, they are simply the best. read more

Artemis is definitely an exceptional massage studio and I have to agree with Susan that it's the best in town. I go there faithfully because it's unique and always private, comfortable, and clean. The therapist I usually have is genuinely friendly, patient, and determined to actually restore and relieve my muscles rather than just make me feel good for an hour (typically I feel great for a whole day). That said, even if I'm not feeling especially achy I still regularly go in for a session because it puts me in a good mood which for me is money well spent. You won't be disappointed, you can trust them to treat you well. read more

Just visiting for the weekend and wanted some relaxation time. This space is beautiful!! Very peaceful and relaxing, therapist was very attentive and did a great job. They also have really lovely candles, lotions, essential oils, etc. would highly recommend!! read more

I'm going to start out by saying I had never gotten a professional massage before going to Artemis and wasn't sure what to expect. Two times later I know and will be coming back for more. I had two different folks, but each one was knowledgeable, attentive, and calming. The rooms were exquisitely set up not only in terms of visual design, but smell, temperature, openness, acoustics--it was all thought out. The atmosphere begins the relaxation process even before the massage begins. And they run the gamut of available therapies, so you could easily do a lunchtime shoulder rub or a longer deep tissue massage. I have yet to try Ashiatsu, but it will happen. (Full disclosure: I know one of the women--Amy--who does Ashiatsu, but that's probably why I'm willing--I know her training and have had her massage me before). I also love that if you like Artemis on Facebook, they send out flash deals. Both times I have taken advantage of this to save money. I'm a grad student, so a massage is essentially an investment in my own well-being, but it's good to know it won't break the bank either. read more

Go to Alexa. She is THE best. I have recommended over 10 people to her. They all go to her regularly. She knows what she is doing and so strong. I lift weight and build stress in my muscles. When I leave I feel like I am a billion bucks. She can do hard massages and light ones depending on your preference. She can talk or not. It's great. Try it once you won't regret it at all. Edit. Alexa has left and they have not been doing great with how they treat their employees. I won't be going back. read more

This place is awesome. The outside (right above an R U Hungry) may leave you wondering how this could be a relaxing oasis, but it really is. The two therapists I've had are Amy and Bobbi and they are both phenomenal. They are both incredibly kind, professional and good at what they do! I've never felt as relaxed as I did after my last massage with Bobbi about 3 weeks ago (and right after finals week). I also did a $5 add on of cupping therapy and it was honestly life changing. Bobbi placed the cups along my back and hips (IT band area). At first the suction creates a small pinch as your tight muscles are suctioned up into the cup, but after about 15 seconds the muscle begins to relax. At the end of the session when she took the cups off (they had been on for about 40 minutes) my back and hips FELT SO MUCH BETTER. It was incredible. I'm planning on coming back next month for sure. The telltale cupping marks left behind also fade in about a week and didn't hurt or feel tender at all after the massage. The pricing at Artemis is also great and really can't be beat. There are definitely more expensive places in town, but that don't do as good of a job, in my opinion. read more

Artemis is hands down the best massage studio in town. I explored massage as a non-pharmaceutical way of helping me deal with my chronic bad pain in conjunction with the exercises prescribed by my physical therapist. I read the online reviews of all the massage studios and spas in town and found this to be the best rated place and decided to take a leap of faith. And I was not at all disappointed. The people here are very warm, and more importantly communicative. Communication of all the inns and outs of massage before the first session is important (learned that the hard and awkward way at the Nittany Mall) and they spent ample time on that. And then gave me a full 45 min massage as promised, which worked wonders after 2-3 sessions. Yes, one needs to be patient to see the results, but boy are they good. I have tried everyone at Artemis including Whitney, Megan, Amy and Lynn. All of them were excellent. Mark is new and I haven't tried massage from him yet, since I usually go for Megan. The proprietor, Whitney, is an extremely good person. After the massage, she spent over 20 min guiding me through some yoga exercises which would help me with my back long term. Artemis consists of a group of very highly skilled people and warm people who make the massage worthwhile. I would recommend this place to anyone hands down. read more

Another amazing session at Artemis Massage Studio today with practitioner Kane. Any massage here is really good. When you find a practitioner with absolutely the right understanding of your frame, muscles, and tension areas however, I'd recommend that you stay with them. The appointment with Kane today was so on target with what I asked for - strong kneading, vigorous muscle work. Kane carefully used the right pressure, incorporating crazy wonderful stretches to provide added benefit. The more Kane becomes familiar with the way my body holds stress, and it's potential and limitations, the more he can apply the right work. It's part technique and training but I have had many many massages throughout the years and I can say there's a significant level of intuition. The WHOLE studio provides an atmosphere of care and nurturing in a truly professional way. In my opinion, it's not a spa experience, so I believe anyone would feel welcomed and cared for here. I bought a gift certificate for my husband today too! Gotta share all that's good. P. S. If you're new, please be aware there's a cancellation fee to be fair to the practitioners so be sure about your plans. It's really worth it to carve out this time for yourself. read more

That's right, made a YELP account just to leave this review... Simply put... If you are looking for a massage around the State College area, THIS IS THE PLACE TO GO. Artemis offers a very comfortable and personal atmosphere to ensure total relaxation. The warm and courteous yet professional staff, accentuated by the soothing music in the background will have you sleeping like a baby during your visit... In my case, a very large *snoring* baby. Bottom Line... Don't even bother checking out any other locations around here, unless you just enjoy losing money instead of stress. read more

I had such a great massage by Tony last night that I felt the need to write my 2nd ever Yelp review. I was initially pretty tense and nervous because I'v never had a male masseuse before; but, Tony gave my very knotted up shoulders and neck the exact right pressure it needed. He always made sure that I was comfortable with how much pressure he was using and that I wasn't in pain and that I was relaxed. He also was very kind with me being unsure of how he wanted to manipulate my body (kept my neck and arms tense when he needed them loose) and just kindly told me how to flex/relax my muscles so he could work with them easier. He completely made my headaches go away and gave me an incredibly relaxing experience. I would recommend Tony's services to absolutely everyone who needs someone to really get into your knotted up muscles and massage places you didn't even know were under so much stress. read more

Artemis is just about the coolest place you can go for a great massage. Love the friendly atmosphere. Whitney epitomizes the entrepreneurial spirit of a small business owner, and she's probably one of the most customer service oriented people you will meet. They have a range of therapists with different strengths and specialties so you're sure to find what you need. read more

BLISSFUL decadence. Intimate, relaxing atmosphere. The therapists are charming and personable and allow you to feel at ease. A 60-min massage at Artemis means 60-min of contact, which is not typical but super wonderful. I think I'm addicted. I want everyone I know to have this experience! read more

My boyfriend and I went in for a couples massage, the first massage for both of us. The atmosphere was so relaxed and wonderful, exactly what we were looking for. I have since been back on my own and that was also a great experience. The owner, Whitney, is really great; she sits down with your beforehand to get a sense of what you're looking for when it comes to your massage. Since they only take one client at a time, by appointment, it's a really personal, attentive experience. And the price is really reasonable, only $65 for an hour. I couldn't ask for a better experience! read more

I first went here when it was just Whitney on College Ave for my first massage ever, she explained how everything worked and that I could go "sans underwear" or with whatever I was comfortable with. Since it was my first time getting a massage she communicated what was going on and what she was going to work on. Second time I went was in the new location, where Artemis has more room and more employees. There is a reason why the company is expanding, everyone that works here is great and they know what they are doing. This is a must for after a stressful semester or year, with the new location and more employees it makes scheduling a breeze. read more

Quality is key. I am an active Penn State alum ('06) and recently visited for a day of Board Meetings and speaking with students both inside and out of the classroom. When I visit State College, I am also intrigued by what is going on with the local economy. A dear friend of mine opened up Artemis Massage Studio a few year back. She continues to grow the business and brand with such pride and strategy. You can tell that this small staff of licensed massage therapists are equally passionate about what this studio provides to the State College community. Being in a college town, I am aware that many people are focused on making a quick buck that targets the transient student population. Though all are welcome (yes, students, you are welcome), my purpose for writing this article to to make permanent residents and working professionals within the area about this gem of a service. I entered Artemis on Sowers Street after a long day of networking and immersing myself back into the culture of Happy Valley and the staff was awaiting my arrival for a scheduled 90-minute massage. I loved that this studio is in the heart of downtown but also feels like a hidden morsel of a retreat amongst the activity. You will get the best experience if you schedule an appointment in advance, but it is not a deal breaker to call and see if "day of" services are available. Having had many customer service jobs in my 30+ years, please be mindful that the staff will move mountains to make you feel like $1,000,000, so cancellations with little notice can interrupt the flow of the experience. After my massage, I complemented the owner on the acoustics of the newly renovated space because she truly thought every last detail out down to the sound-proof walls. You would not know that my massage TOOK PLACE in a room that sat along the iconic College Avenue. Yes, that means students were buzzing about 4 floors below on their way to class from surrounding apartment buildings, dorms and eateries. While I was getting a massage, it was like I was on a retreat in the mountains or some remote island. The massage was thorough and performed by a licensed therapist who took the time to ask if I specifically had any areas of tension and then incorporated my comments into her work of those areas. Before departing, the owner showed me several new additions in construction at the studio. She is strategically growing the space to meet the demands of her clientele. She excitedly shared the new plans for couples and group massages that can be event-specific (bridal, birthday, etc.). A smart business owner, the thought leadership is equally spent between navigating the needs of her staff as well as the customers. Perfection is the goal, but I often touch base to make sure the owner, Whitney, is taking a break so as not to burn out. I am so proud of you Whitney. The next time I am in town, i will be sure to incorporate a visit to Artemis into my itinerary. #smallBIZ #excellentSERVICE read more

I just moved to the area and my boyfriend and I were super sore and in need of a couples massage. We went to the website and emailed them and within an hour the owner had gotten back to me with some really convenient times. When we walked in, the front room was very serene and comfortable. The staff was super nice and explained everything to us. We had a 90 minute massage therapy session in the double room (didnt sign up for any of the fancier massages) and it was awesome. My hips and back felt amazing afterward and I already booked my next appointment to try the bamboo treatment..thingy. I'm stoked. With a staff so nice, a beautiful facility, and such a comfortable setting and deep massage, I will definitely be hitting up Artemis often. My hip pain is almost gone and my boyfriend's back was feeling a million times better the next day. read more

Super lovely, relaxing, and a beautiful massage that lasted exactly one hour (at the last place I went, my massesse stopped at 45 and I almost cried!). It's more than a massage. It's an experience. Best ever. People who care about their clients, especially the owner.

After reading the other reviews, I have to admit, I was still a bit skeptical. Could a massage studio really be as good as everyone describes??? YES, it can if you go to Artemis Massage Studio. Mark was AMAZING!!! Not only did he listen to me describe all of my "issues", he took his time addressing said "issues". I cannot express in words the difference between before and after. I no longer need to seek a place for a relaxing, thorough massage, because Artemis Massage Studio is the only place I will need to go! Thanks again for an amazing experience! read more
