I've been going to Art + Science for 3 years now and recommend it to all of my friends. Hannah, my stylist, is amazing! I have very thin fine hair and she makes me look like I have a LOT more hair. Hannah is almost always on time and is super friendly. She also is excellent at cutting hair, which I really appreciate. I've also seen Bridgette a few time for color and she is also fantastic! I tend to be very vague about what I'm looking for because I'm really not sure what would be best and she has always made me look great. I get compliments on my color every time. Being the first and only hair salon I tried in Chicago, I had heard raving reviews about this place. Starting off from the start, I called 3 days earlier then my expected arrival date and they managed to slide me into a coloring and cut appointment. Naturally a dirty blonde, I try to achieve the most glossy blonde possible, and I've encountered many pathetic attempts at that. I was assigned to Ivan, who did a wonderful job. He was wonderful with finding out exactly what it was I wanted, as well as throwing out his own suggestions. Extremely sweet and very helpful. When I was drying my foils, he even went the extra mile and found some restaurants in the area that I should try, since I mentioned I was looking for somewhere to eat after. My color was perfect. Guy cut my hair and I received the same attentive and precise clarification from him. He has a great eye for detail--the moment you think you're about to walk off, Guy spots a millimeter of hair that is off, and snips it before releasing you. I'm also extremely anal with receiving too much length off in a 'trim' and Guy was sure to abide by that, and added spectacular layers to conform to my wavy, thick hair. Both were extremely sweet, very knowledgeable, went out of their way to make sure I enjoyed Chicago with tips and advise after leaving the salon, and left me with extremely sexy hair. The salon itself was very clean, modern, and chic. The receptionist was warm and helpful, and it's always a bonus they serve coffee, water, tea, or wine. I even mentioned to Ivan I wanted to see Lolla because of Jack White, and he brought me over a magazine which featured him. For my 100th review I decided to give a shout-out to someone who really deserves it. Her name is Isobel, she works at Art+Science, and she is a dream come true. Since moving to Chicago 6 years ago I've tried 4 different salons. I started at Trilogy, which was awful, moved onto Fringe, which was great until my stylist left to become a pharmacist/pro skateboarder (seriously), then went to Big Hair, where I got awesome pink color but less awesome haircuts. (Actually, I thought they were okay until it was pointed out to me that I had a giant hole in the right side of my hair.) I realized that saving money at a cheaper salon wasn't worth the damage I was doing to my hair. I went to the A+S website and found that a discount was offered for first time clients with 2 of the stylists. And that's how I found Isobel. Or really, how we found each other. Besides being absolutely adorable, Isobel is pretty much a genius stylist. She actually listens to what you're saying, and helps to realize your dream haircut. She is responsible for the wicked asymmetrical bob I'm currently sporting. Granted, I can only afford to go about 4 times a year, but in those times, it's totally worth it. First time to one of Wicker Park's haircut places. First impression I got when I went in was friendly service who offered me water. Place was really nicely decorated and had a vibrant feeling. I went in with my groupon. Katie was the only barber that accepted groupon. I can say for sure that this is the place to get a men's haircut despite the price being quite hefty (especially without a Groupon). Katie is a great barber and I would recommend. Confession: I'm totally a low-maintenance girl. I hate having to play with my hair in the morning to make it look good. Thankfully, one visit to A+S every two months totally takes care for that for me. I see Guy and Susan, who can, for some reason, make my hair behave. It's very fine, but super dense, and doesn't really want to decide on a texture or a color. Sometimes its wavy, sometimes its straight, sometimes its red and sometimes its dirty blonde, but not when I let those two manage it. Guy is VERY attentive and very detail-oriented. He really listens to exactly what you want. I'm not really a "trendy" girl, I don't go for really hip haircuts, but Guy cuts my hair so that it flatters my face, is classic, and even has a little bit of an edge to it. I don't know how. He has pretty magic hands. AND I don't even have to do anything to it. I just shower, and walk outside, and it's perfectly waved and healthy-looking. I can't even. Susan. I don't even know where to start. She is probably the best colorist in all of Chicago, if not the entire Midwest. I only get my hair glossed, which she can do PERFECTLY in 15 minutes, but I've watched her work her magic on other clients while my hair is processing. Watching her do highlights, is like watching someone make a painting. They always come out perfect. Anyway, she makes my hair look shiny and healthy and beautiful always. My natural red is more vibrant, and I feel like a rock star. The front desk staff is always helpful and cheerful, and I love that they get festive! Mimosas on New Years Eve, and Ugly Sweaters around Christmas. Hilarious and Delicious. BOTTOM LINE: Come here and let Guy and Susan work their magic on you. Potentially the cutest haircut of my life with Becka. Background: I have curly hair and have been growing it out for a while. Tried to give myself layers and it looked "meh". I went to Art + Science on a whim and was able to get an appointment the next day (amazing). I gave Becka pretty minimal guidance on what do to, other than to "make it look better and keep the length". She spent a really solid amount of time (~5-7 mins) listening to me, checking on on options, and then she began cutting my hair piece by piece, both when it was wet and then again when it was dry. We talked the whole way through but I could tell she was being really strategic about my hair and didn't lose her sense of purpose as we were chatting. After a lovely hour of studied cutting, retouching, blowdrying, and shaping, my self-cut bangs looked all Zooey Dechanel, my long hair suddenly had bouncing volumous layers, and my hair somehow looked LONGER! She didn't seem to have curly hair herself but knew just how to blowdry in softer more controlled curls by twirling the brush the way I do at home, but better. Moreover, she spent the the perfect amount of time on my hair--not too rushed and didn't feel too long or unecessary either. I love when you can tell someone to make you look good and they have a vison--that's a reason enough alone to pay decent money for a haircut. Totally recommend Becka--she's new and building up her clientele base so her haircuts are super, super affordable for this nice of a salon too. I go to Seven at the Art+Science location in Wicker Park. Although I love my parents very much, they gave me a terrible head of hair. Imagine unruly thick, dark hair with a mind of its own. What you're thinking in your head is what is on top of my head. For as long as I can remember, I've never found a salon that provides service quite like Art + Science. Seven is the best of the best. The first time that I saw her, I told her that I wanted something a little funky meets businessman. She was able to take my broad vision and turn it into a reality. The more I go to Seven, the better and better my haircuts get because she keeps a tab on previous haircuts to see where she can perfect from before. Also, she got me hooked on American Crew's Forming Cream, which I would have never purchased on my own. This stuff works wonders, regardless of the length of my hair. One more thing: I took a leap of faith and purchased a blow dryer from Target with the advice of Seven (she didn't pressure me, but she said that it would help me maintain my hair's craziness) and don't have any idea how I lived without it. She showed me how to use it (as a guy, it took me until the ripe age of 23 aka this year to figure this out). Let me tell you - this $30 tool, which I would have N-E-V-E-R purchased without Seven's help, is a godsend and keeps me looking good. I recently went in for both highlights and a haircut at this location. After reading the great reviews I was really looking forward to both of my appointments. Hair Color I had my color done first with Ivan. It was my first time ever getting color in my hair & my hair is naturally a very dark brown. I went in for highlights a few shades lighter brown - nothing too drastic, but something that would warm my hair color up for the warmer months. I was surprised that they had scheduled my hair color before my cut since I was looking to drastically shorten the length of my hair, but Ivan called over Hannah who would be cutting my hair later for a pre-color consultation and I felt at ease. Ivan was very friendly and showed me two color swatches we thought would look good. The whole process took about an hour, he took a peek said it looked good and off I went for a rinse and then to my haircut. The problem... my hair color never showed up. No highlights, no lighter hair color, NOTHING. At the salon, I thought it was too soon for the color to show up but 3 weeks later... still nothing. $75+ and time down the drain. Hair Cut After getting what I thought would turn to highlights, I met with Hannah for a haircut. I was looking for a short bob. She was friendly, not overly talkative and overall got the cut right. It was a bit shorter than what I was looking for, but it works. I naturally have curly/wavy hair but tend to straighten it; however she talked me into just wearing my natural texture. However, when I straightened my hair at home, the cut was uneven in some places since it was styled wavy at the salon. The ambiance overall was underwhelming as well. It was hectic (as can be expected on a Saturday) but twice I had to move my seat as I sat waiting for my hair color treatment to soak in because the staff were measuring the length of the walls with measuring tape . Seriously, no other time to do this? Overall I was very disappointed in my experience here, considering this is frequently considered one of the better salons in Chicago. $150 later I was left with no difference in hair color at all and a somewhat uneven haircut - not the worst or the best haircut ever. The salon also never called me to follow up on their services which I expected, especially since I was a first-time customer. My search for a solid salon continues, bummer. read more

But I wanted to do something special for my wedding, and a friend of mine suggested Art + Science. So I called, asking for a stylist who knows how to work with curly hair and then scheduled a consult with Hannah about two months before my wedding. Hmmm... I guess I'm the only male to review this spot. I started going here because I decided to grow my hair out and Bo Rick, Joe Barber face and all of their friends coalesced against my endeavor. However, I knew one Stylist at A&S would know what to do with my asian-fro-ee-wig piece hair on top of my head. Her name is Jessica Pearl and she wields some of the best shearing skills in the city. Andrew, the scheduler is always really professional and nice to talk to. So I give the staff 5 stars and I would name solar systems after them if I knew which website to go to, to do this. Here goes the hater face. I hate the plastic couch thing they've got going on. I had to single out couch, because it's one huge molded piece of not very functional plastic that they shoved in the window. It is also hunter orange and it makes me wonder, what kind of machine produced this thing and why did someone invent it if this is what it produces...not, what am I supposed to tell Jessica Pearl about my hairdid? The hunter orange plastic paneling that is kind of stuck to everything makes my eyes sore too...and so does the Ikea looking drawer sets. It was pretty cool looking when they first opened their doors, but they should think about updating their own look too! read more

She gave me exactly the cut I was looking for, but took into consideration my hair type and how I style it. She also straightened it for me (which is no easy task, since I have a full head of curly hair). Lastly, she recommended a Bumble and Bumble product which I love. I'm hooked and I'll definitely be coming back to Art + Science in the future - especially since I was given a coupon for my next visit! I am SO pleased with my haircut. I went on a whim to this salon. I called Thursday and they fit me in Friday afternoon with a stylist named Seven. It was my first time - I wanted to try it after having several friends recommend it. I am not normally monogamous with hair dressers but I think I may start. I showed her a picture, we discussed how it would fit my face and texture. 6 inches later I feel like a million dollars. Seven was very laid back an accommodating. I never felt pressure to chit chat but also enjoyed our conversation. Typically, I absolutely dread hair cuts. After passing Art+Science and then seeing it make the Chicagoist "The 8 Best Hair Salons In Chicago" list, I thought I would give it a go. I am so happy and relieved to have found such a fantastic salon! From the front desk to the shampoo girl, everyone was friendly and welcoming. There was great music and they offered tea, coffee, etc. Good vibes from start to finish. I had my hair colored by Susan. I cannot say enough wonderful things about her. She is fabulous! It is clear from the moment you meet her she is truly passionate about her career. I wasn't exactly sure of what to do with my hair, so she took a lot time to consult me about my options, what i wanted from my color and what she thought would be best.. My resulted hair color has far exceeded my expectations. It is very complimentary to my complexion and eye color. I have received compliments from all my co-workers, friends and family. I love my new color and have already scheduled my next appointment with Susan. My color was followed by a cut with Seven. She also exceeded my expectations. I can't say enough good things about Art + Science, notably Seven and Shana, and I really mean it, as this Yelp box wouldn't let me go on, and on, and on! I had given up on a "hair cut" for the past year after one bad salon run-in after another. I resorted to the Aveda Salon school on Clark, which was ok - or so I thought until I got a real, big-girl hair style & color after meeting Seven and Shana. A friend of mine raved about them until I finally decided to check it out - and I am now in there almost every other month, and am probably their biggest fans :) Seven, as Stylist, just "gets it". She is so friendly, welcoming, not your average awkward salon chit-chat experience. She knows exactly what to do, takes suggestions or requests and even puts up with the pictures I bring in of Jennifer Aniston (I know, I am THAT girl). The hour with her flies by, and I always leave with a huge smile on my face. She has that intangible talent of just making your hair look like you just got out of a photo shoot, and I can always get that same look when I do it myself! Shana is my Colorist, and has taken me from dark brunette to a summery caramel - for the first time ever I love my hair color. Whereas in college I attempted this, only to look like an extra on the Jersey Shore. This time, we have gradually built color over time, and each and every time I go, it looks different, unique, and the color is so multi-dimensional! Just like with Seven, Shana is someone I could hang out with for hours - I literally love coming in to see them. When I got engaged, they both sent me messages and I was so excited to ask them to be a part of my day for the hair & makeup - and obviously to stay for some cocktails! The greatest part (besides the fact that the prices are the most reasonable in the city) is that everyone at this salon seems as cool and nice as they are. From the guy I always talk to to schedule my appointments (you are awesome, I am blanking on a name!) to serving wine, water, or coffee while you wait, to the super-clean & hip space, I could not be more in love w/ this place. I came in on a whim as I desperately needed a cut before heading to LA for my brother's wedding. I haven't had a regular stylist for about a year and the guy I was kind of seeing was out of town. Several of the reviews I had read mentioned it was pricey so I was a little nervous but figured, oh well, gotta do it. It was $55+tip which I thought was reasonable for a salon. Of course it's more expensive than Supercuts, but that's apples and oranges. Mikael cut my hair and did a great job. I got sooo many compliments! She gave me lots of tips on styling, what do for my next cut, and mentioned they have complimentary bang trims. I have long, gorgeous curly black hair. Everyone loves it. I get compliments weekly. Your jealous, I know. The problem is stylists love it and I can't just get a simple haircut and style. I went to art and science on a recommendation from a friend who got an awesome haircut. My stylist was funny, smart and I thought it was understood that I like the big hair aesthetic, since that is what my hair is going to do anyway. He evened out my hair and fixed the unintentional layers that I have and in total I lost 3 inches. Fine. But I got a side part, finger wave, Ma Joad Grapes of Wrath hairstyle that looked nothing like the way I came in and did nothing, absolutely nothing to improve my look. I am open to all hairstyles, but this one stylists consistently give to me and it does not look good on me. I looked like a wet poodle. And I was confused since I thought I said I wanted big, curly hair like my hairstyle, not some matted down straggly 20's wave style that hung across my face. I replied that it wasn't the style I asked for, gritted my teeth and dutifully paid my 20% tip since the stylist was friendly and competent. I stopped into Supercuts on the walk back to work and asked if I could use their hairdryer to fix my hair style, since I could not take the style after 20 minutes and had a meeting that afternoon. Despite never deviating from one of two styles, I always come prepared with the same trusty, crumpled Kate Moss, baby-fine haired photo-collage that I've offered as reference for 3 years running. Katie doesn't need it of course and could shear me blindfolded with one hand behind her back. In addition to being fairly priced she takes Celiac Disease seriously and searches the ingredient listings before she uses product on me. We use MOP organic shampoo and conditioner - FYI avoid Bumble & Bumble and ABBA hair products as nearly all of their formulations include wheat. As this was my 2nd check-in at the salon via Yelp I unlocked the special '20% off coloring service with Sophia' coupon and decided to make my commitment to black hair official. I've been dying my own hair at home for the last decade and am particularly attached to the gluten-free Palette By Nature hair color line to save money and avoid reactions. I brought this 3rd party product in as we initially planned for Sophia to apply it professionally (in direct opposition to my imprecise, leopard spotted, home-dye disaster jobs). I lamented the fact that PbN doesn't offer black - due to the toxic effects of PPD - and decided I'd go back to black one last time IF their line didn't contain wheat. Their blue-black temp dye did, but the permanent version contained soy protein in place of wheat protein?! We proceeded to apply the raven solution and 20 minutes later any remnants of my auburn-ished origins and platinum affairs were permanently overcome by a rich onyx-colored cosmos. After my first visit a few months back, she sent me a handwritten card in the mail thanking me for coming to Art & Science and referenced something we talked about when I was in (so I know the message was not generic!). I have sent the pickiest and most critical (in terms of their hair) to Kim and they have stuck with her in addition to sending more people her way. I need not review the salon a second time, rather I need to applaud Vanessa's ability to give me a great cut every time and yet reinvent my super short style to keep it interesting. I got my hair cut here around the end of April/beginning of May and realized I never wrote a review! I had a great experience here. When I called, they were able to fit me in same day which was really nice. Coco cut my hair and she did a great job. I hadn't gotten my hair cut in 2 & 1/2 years (Horrible I know), but I had been a broke college student for most of that time. Nonetheless, I loved my haircut. I told Coco that I wear clip in hair extensions normally and have been for about 4 years and she cut my hair so it would still be easy to blend my extensions in or still look good without them. Super please with my final cut and need to go back soon to try out their colorists! read more

First time visiting this spot...the salon has a great atmosphere, Doug at the reception was terrific...very welcoming, clean, and efficient. I will be returning to Katie...she was great. Also, you can sip on a PBR while you wait or get a haircut! Parking is a bit annoying around the area...do make sure to leave a few extra minutes to not arrive late while searching for a spot to park. read more

I've never had a stylist that I liked till I found Mikael! I have really curly hair and have recieved cuts from people who have no clue how to cut curly hair and pretend that they do! But enough of that. Mikael is awesome. I've been to her 4 times now and each time she starts out by playing with my hair to see how it falls and then we talk about what I want and what she recommends and then find a happy meeting place. :o) One of the things I liked about Mikael is that she's advocate for curly hair. I have a bad habbit of flat ironing my curls and she's convinced me to wear it curly more often. I had set up a free curly hair style/blow dry session with her and ever since I've been more willing to wear my hair curly. She's an awesome hair stylist and fun to talk to! So far I've sent 3 friends to see Mikael and all have loved her as well. read more

Haircuts make me nervous. So as someone new to Chicago, I was a little scared about finding a new place to get my hair done. I found Charlie at A&S. He greeted me warmly with a hug, and I could tell that he was just an overall nice guy, regardless of what he did to my hair. He listened to what I had to say, and was observant of my personality and style when we were chatting about what direction to take my cut. He's also a stickler for the details, which in hair is important. When I get my hair cut I really want someone confidant, since it helps to calm the butterflies I get when I go in. I really almost feel sorry for Charlie, since I'm pretty nervous and not very good w/ conversation while the cut is happening. But in the end, my hair looks good, and I feel great. I've had other people at A&S for band trims (free!) and they've all been good, but for now I'm loyal to Charlie. If you are thinking of bringing him a gift, go for a nice stout beer, he gets too many cookies. read more
