Potentially the cutest haircut of my life with Becka. Background: I have curly hair and have been growing it out for a while. Tried to give myself layers and it looked "meh". I went to Art + Science on a whim and was able to get an appointment the next day (amazing). I gave Becka pretty minimal guidance on what do to, other than to "make it look better and keep the length". She spent a really solid amount of time (~5-7 mins) listening to me, checking on on options, and then she began cutting my hair piece by piece, both when it was wet and then again when it was dry. We talked the whole way through but I could tell she was being really strategic about my hair and didn't lose her sense of purpose as we were chatting. After a lovely hour of studied cutting, retouching, blowdrying, and shaping, my self-cut bangs looked all Zooey Dechanel, my long hair suddenly had bouncing volumous layers, and my hair somehow looked LONGER! She didn't seem to have curly hair herself but knew just how to blowdry in softer more controlled curls by twirling the brush the way I do at home, but better. Moreover, she spent the the perfect amount of time on my hair--not too rushed and didn't feel too long or unecessary either. I love when you can tell someone to make you look good and they have a vison--that's a reason enough alone to pay decent money for a haircut. Totally recommend Becka--she's new and building up her clientele base so her haircuts are super, super affordable for this nice of a salon too. Hope letting the cat out of the bag about her doesn't mean its hard to get another appt. with her soon! read more

I go to Seven at the Art+Science location in Wicker Park. Although I love my parents very much, they gave me a terrible head of hair. Imagine unruly thick, dark hair with a mind of its own. What you're thinking in your head is what is on top of my head. For as long as I can remember, I've never found a salon that provides service quite like Art + Science. Seven is the best of the best. The first time that I saw her, I told her that I wanted something a little funky meets businessman. She was able to take my broad vision and turn it into a reality. The more I go to Seven, the better and better my haircuts get because she keeps a tab on previous haircuts to see where she can perfect from before. Also, she got me hooked on American Crew's Forming Cream, which I would have never purchased on my own. This stuff works wonders, regardless of the length of my hair. One more thing: I took a leap of faith and purchased a blow dryer from Target with the advice of Seven (she didn't pressure me, but she said that it would help me maintain my hair's craziness) and don't have any idea how I lived without it. She showed me how to use it (as a guy, it took me until the ripe age of 23 aka this year to figure this out). Let me tell you - this $30 tool, which I would have N-E-V-E-R purchased without Seven's help, is a godsend and keeps me looking good. Claps towards Seven and the rest of the crew at Art + Science - you guys rock! read more

I recently went in for both highlights and a haircut at this location. After reading the great reviews I was really looking forward to both of my appointments. Hair Color I had my color done first with Ivan. It was my first time ever getting color in my hair & my hair is naturally a very dark brown. I went in for highlights a few shades lighter brown - nothing too drastic, but something that would warm my hair color up for the warmer months. I was surprised that they had scheduled my hair color before my cut since I was looking to drastically shorten the length of my hair, but Ivan called over Hannah who would be cutting my hair later for a pre-color consultation and I felt at ease. Ivan was very friendly and showed me two color swatches we thought would look good. The whole process took about an hour, he took a peek said it looked good and off I went for a rinse and then to my haircut. The problem... my hair color never showed up. No highlights, no lighter hair color, NOTHING. At the salon, I thought it was too soon for the color to show up but 3 weeks later... still nothing. $75+ and time down the drain. Hair Cut After getting what I thought would turn to highlights, I met with Hannah for a haircut. I was looking for a short bob. She was friendly, not overly talkative and overall got the cut right. It was a bit shorter than what I was looking for, but it works. I naturally have curly/wavy hair but tend to straighten it; however she talked me into just wearing my natural texture. However, when I straightened my hair at home, the cut was uneven in some places since it was styled wavy at the salon. The ambiance overall was underwhelming as well. It was hectic (as can be expected on a Saturday) but twice I had to move my seat as I sat waiting for my hair color treatment to soak in because the staff were measuring the length of the walls with measuring tape . Seriously, no other time to do this? Overall I was very disappointed in my experience here, considering this is frequently considered one of the better salons in Chicago. $150 later I was left with no difference in hair color at all and a somewhat uneven haircut - not the worst or the best haircut ever. The salon also never called me to follow up on their services which I expected, especially since I was a first-time customer. My search for a solid salon continues, bummer. read more

Its all about Nicole for a cut and Stephanie for a color. I have never been happier with anyone but them, and I have had my hair horrors. Its a chill place, and not as pretentious as you would think. It is a little pricey, but you pay for what you get - its all good. read more

I have been going to Art + Science in Lincoln Park for almost 3 years. Because I moved I decided to try the Wicker Park/Bucktown location. I figured my girl was busy, all I needed was a trim, shouldn't be too hard right? No. Lauren cut my hair, It took her almost two hours AND it was the worst hair cut I have ever had. I have really thick coarse hair, she decided she was going to give me an UNDER CUT without asking or telling me first. She ended up CHOPPING my hair off and I am still growing it out three months later and will be for a VERY long time. The establishment itself is nice but once you get a really bad hair cut, you NEVER go back. read more

I never get my hair done...my hair is full of tight little curls that have a mind of their own, and I usually just go with it. But I wanted to do something special for my wedding, and a friend of mine suggested Art + Science. So I called, asking for a stylist who knows how to work with curly hair and then scheduled a consult with Hannah about two months before my wedding. I showed her this picture of Emma Watson: http://hairstyleslook.com/401/formal-hairstyles-for-short-hair basically saying I wanted something simple and wavy, but not sure if she could make it work with my crazy hair. She said she could. So I scheduled an appointment for the morning of my wedding, and I was blown away by the service. She spent a full two hours on my hair: washing, blowdrying, straight ironing and then finally curling and pinning and hair spraying. The end result was perfection. My hair looked amazing all day. I can't recommend this place enough, Hannah was fantastic and kind and an amazing hair genius. read more

Hmmm... I guess I'm the only male to review this spot. I started going here because I decided to grow my hair out and Bo Rick, Joe Barber face and all of their friends coalesced against my endeavor. However, I knew one Stylist at A&S would know what to do with my asian-fro-ee-wig piece hair on top of my head. Her name is Jessica Pearl and she wields some of the best shearing skills in the city. Andrew, the scheduler is always really professional and nice to talk to. So I give the staff 5 stars and I would name solar systems after them if I knew which website to go to, to do this. Here goes the hater face. I hate the plastic couch thing they've got going on. I had to single out couch, because it's one huge molded piece of not very functional plastic that they shoved in the window. It is also hunter orange and it makes me wonder, what kind of machine produced this thing and why did someone invent it if this is what it produces...not, what am I supposed to tell Jessica Pearl about my hairdid? The hunter orange plastic paneling that is kind of stuck to everything makes my eyes sore too...and so does the Ikea looking drawer sets. It was pretty cool looking when they first opened their doors, but they should think about updating their own look too! read more

There's already five reviews for Tara (the senior stylist, who has been here for several years), but I'm going to add another. She is a GENIUS. I have shorter, thick hair. Like possibly the thickest hair in the entire world. She understood the need to texturize it, and took the time to do it. Even though it took, well, a really long time. She gave me the Perfect Haircut that completely fixed the botched cut I got from Tigerlilie and my own scissors. Her cuts are $60. Totally worth it. read more

Obsessed with my haircut from Art + Science. I picked the salon because of its reviews and Yelpers did not lead me astray! I noticed that Tara had great reviews, so I called and made an appointment. She gave me exactly the cut I was looking for, but took into consideration my hair type and how I style it. She also straightened it for me (which is no easy task, since I have a full head of curly hair). Lastly, she recommended a Bumble and Bumble product which I love. I'm hooked and I'll definitely be coming back to Art + Science in the future - especially since I was given a coupon for my next visit! An important thing to note: Street parking is limited and metered, so give yourself a little extra time if you're driving. read more

I am SO pleased with my haircut. I went on a whim to this salon. I called Thursday and they fit me in Friday afternoon with a stylist named Seven. It was my first time - I wanted to try it after having several friends recommend it. I am not normally monogamous with hair dressers but I think I may start. I showed her a picture, we discussed how it would fit my face and texture. 6 inches later I feel like a million dollars. Seven was very laid back an accommodating. I never felt pressure to chit chat but also enjoyed our conversation. The space is beautiful and, in eavesdropping on conversations, all of the stylists there really came across as thorough with extremely positive energy exerted to each of their clients. read more

I got one of the best hair cuts of my life here and definitely the best highlights I have ever had. It gave me a huge boost in confidence. I couldn't stop looking in the mirror. It costs money to take care of yourself, and this is the place to go to do it. Thank you Art and Science for making my day! read more

Typically, I absolutely dread hair cuts. After passing Art+Science and then seeing it make the Chicagoist "The 8 Best Hair Salons In Chicago" list, I thought I would give it a go. I am so happy and relieved to have found such a fantastic salon! From the front desk to the shampoo girl, everyone was friendly and welcoming. There was great music and they offered tea, coffee, etc. Good vibes from start to finish. I had my hair colored by Susan. I cannot say enough wonderful things about her. She is fabulous! It is clear from the moment you meet her she is truly passionate about her career. I wasn't exactly sure of what to do with my hair, so she took a lot time to consult me about my options, what i wanted from my color and what she thought would be best.. My resulted hair color has far exceeded my expectations. It is very complimentary to my complexion and eye color. I have received compliments from all my co-workers, friends and family. I love my new color and have already scheduled my next appointment with Susan. My color was followed by a cut with Seven. She also exceeded my expectations. She gave me a great cut that I have been able to manage well on my own. I love it! Thanks A+S for a great experience, I look forward to my next visit! read more

Nicky is the one to see here for a proper men's haircut. He is pleasant, efficient, confident with the scissors, and I always end up with a haircut that looks good for a long time. It takes a lot for me to travel from Naperville to the west loop for anything, but damn he is so worth it! read more

I was feeling broke and took advantage of the deal they give you if you work with a student stylist of Art + Science, who turned out to be Guy. Guy was great. He was very friendly and listened to what I was looking for, while also offering his own expertise for the best results. He was very attentive to detail and took the time to show me how to style it. Two days later, I love my haircut!! It's so cute and I would totally go back to him again. I even took pictures of it so I can remember it later. Thank you Guy and A+S! read more

I can't say enough good things about Art + Science, notably Seven and Shana, and I really mean it, as this Yelp box wouldn't let me go on, and on, and on! I had given up on a "hair cut" for the past year after one bad salon run-in after another. I resorted to the Aveda Salon school on Clark, which was ok - or so I thought until I got a real, big-girl hair style & color after meeting Seven and Shana. A friend of mine raved about them until I finally decided to check it out - and I am now in there almost every other month, and am probably their biggest fans :) Seven, as Stylist, just "gets it". She is so friendly, welcoming, not your average awkward salon chit-chat experience. She knows exactly what to do, takes suggestions or requests and even puts up with the pictures I bring in of Jennifer Aniston (I know, I am THAT girl). The hour with her flies by, and I always leave with a huge smile on my face. She has that intangible talent of just making your hair look like you just got out of a photo shoot, and I can always get that same look when I do it myself! Shana is my Colorist, and has taken me from dark brunette to a summery caramel - for the first time ever I love my hair color. Whereas in college I attempted this, only to look like an extra on the Jersey Shore. This time, we have gradually built color over time, and each and every time I go, it looks different, unique, and the color is so multi-dimensional! Just like with Seven, Shana is someone I could hang out with for hours - I literally love coming in to see them. When I got engaged, they both sent me messages and I was so excited to ask them to be a part of my day for the hair & makeup - and obviously to stay for some cocktails! The greatest part (besides the fact that the prices are the most reasonable in the city) is that everyone at this salon seems as cool and nice as they are. From the guy I always talk to to schedule my appointments (you are awesome, I am blanking on a name!) to serving wine, water, or coffee while you wait, to the super-clean & hip space, I could not be more in love w/ this place. It's a great group of people you want to befriend, with the added bonus that they totally rock at making you look like a million bucks. Go see them NOW! You will not have once ounce of regret! read more

I came in on a whim as I desperately needed a cut before heading to LA for my brother's wedding. I haven't had a regular stylist for about a year and the guy I was kind of seeing was out of town. Several of the reviews I had read mentioned it was pricey so I was a little nervous but figured, oh well, gotta do it. It was $55+tip which I thought was reasonable for a salon. Of course it's more expensive than Supercuts, but that's apples and oranges. Mikael cut my hair and did a great job. I got sooo many compliments! She gave me lots of tips on styling, what do for my next cut, and mentioned they have complimentary bang trims. It was my first time there, but the conversation was so easy and relaxed that I felt like Mikael had been styling my hair for years. read more

I have long, gorgeous curly black hair. Everyone loves it. I get compliments weekly. Your jealous, I know. The problem is stylists love it and I can't just get a simple haircut and style. I went to art and science on a recommendation from a friend who got an awesome haircut. My stylist was funny, smart and I thought it was understood that I like the big hair aesthetic, since that is what my hair is going to do anyway. He evened out my hair and fixed the unintentional layers that I have and in total I lost 3 inches. Fine. But I got a side part, finger wave, Ma Joad Grapes of Wrath hairstyle that looked nothing like the way I came in and did nothing, absolutely nothing to improve my look. I am open to all hairstyles, but this one stylists consistently give to me and it does not look good on me. I looked like a wet poodle. And I was confused since I thought I said I wanted big, curly hair like my hairstyle, not some matted down straggly 20's wave style that hung across my face. I replied that it wasn't the style I asked for, gritted my teeth and dutifully paid my 20% tip since the stylist was friendly and competent. I stopped into Supercuts on the walk back to work and asked if I could use their hairdryer to fix my hair style, since I could not take the style after 20 minutes and had a meeting that afternoon. The ladies as Supercuts thought I was crazy, but at least I looked presentable for my meeting. I don't know why curly hair is so misunderstood. read more

One of my friends went here and came back with the cutest haircut ever. So I decided to give it a try. Michael (sp?) did my hair - she was aweome. Very friendly, but not overly chatty, didn't push any products, gave me lots of good advice, and most importantly gave me a haircut I was very happy with. I'm taking away one star for the price, though. I mean, I'm very satisfied with the result and I'll definitely go again, but the price does make me wince a little inside. read more

While my haircuts from all the stylists here are great. They really need to work on their front desk management of appointments. I've been scheduled multiple times where they write down the wrong date or slot me in for a cut and color when the timing of the two stylists don't match up. Basically every time I book an appointment here it is a 50/50 chance it was actually booked right. read more

I've been a huge fan of Shana for color and highlights for almost two years now and wouldn't let anyone touch my hair besides her. Recently I tried Tara for a haircut and am a big fan too! She cared a lot to understand not just what I said I wanted, but what I truly wanted. She gave me a haircut that looks good, is low maintenance, and is quite a departure from my old style. Definitely recommend her and I'll be returning too! read more

I don't mind looking shabby chic for 358 days out of the year, but 'tis the season that I spend 7 very long days with the family in the land of the sleek and well coiffed and I am not about to disgrace my family any further than I already have:P I also will not return to Karen Marie Salon despite having a positive experience there as they are out of my price range as I'm transitioning from under-employment into the ephemeral realm of student-loan living. Thank you Katie for being naturally affordable. I'm sorry I cheated on you - 'twas the irresistible urge to use a coupon. Never again! Katie's talent for tailoring tresses is just as strong as stylists with a few more years behind the black apron. Why pay $10-$30 more? Despite never deviating from one of two styles, I always come prepared with the same trusty, crumpled Kate Moss, baby-fine haired photo-collage that I've offered as reference for 3 years running. Katie doesn't need it of course and could shear me blindfolded with one hand behind her back. In addition to being fairly priced she takes Celiac Disease seriously and searches the ingredient listings before she uses product on me. We use MOP organic shampoo and conditioner - FYI avoid Bumble & Bumble and ABBA hair products as nearly all of their formulations include wheat. As this was my 2nd check-in at the salon via Yelp I unlocked the special '20% off coloring service with Sophia' coupon and decided to make my commitment to black hair official. I've been dying my own hair at home for the last decade and am particularly attached to the gluten-free Palette By Nature hair color line to save money and avoid reactions. I brought this 3rd party product in as we initially planned for Sophia to apply it professionally (in direct opposition to my imprecise, leopard spotted, home-dye disaster jobs). I lamented the fact that PbN doesn't offer black - due to the toxic effects of PPD - and decided I'd go back to black one last time IF their line didn't contain wheat. Their blue-black temp dye did, but the permanent version contained soy protein in place of wheat protein?! We proceeded to apply the raven solution and 20 minutes later any remnants of my auburn-ished origins and platinum affairs were permanently overcome by a rich onyx-colored cosmos. Was the outcome worth the risk of PPD accumulation - decidedly yes! Everything in moderation, n'est-ce pas? Thanks Ladies! read more

Scene as Hell? Yes. Somewhat pricey? Duh. Did I get the best fashion mullet ever here? Mm Hmm. I find it a little hard to justify getting a regular haircut here, but I have to say that Nicole was the first person to give me a haircut that didn't make me freak out a little, or a lot, in a long time. Now that I'm less of a baby about haircutting (i.e. my last hairdo was cut by a drunk girl at a party, and looks damn good) I don't need to go here as much, but I have to thank Nicole for easing my fears of haircuts. PS- Dear Mom, I will go back here if you pay for it. read more

I just needed to comment on how great the customer service is here. Christin is my stylist and I would recommend her to anyone! After my first visit a few months back, she sent me a handwritten card in the mail thanking me for coming to Art & Science and referenced something we talked about when I was in (so I know the message was not generic!). She also sent me a coupon for 20% off my next hair appt. Their organic products are awesome and they last a long time, so the price is worth it (not to mention I think everything is buy 2 get 1 free)! All this and they give a fabulous haircut! After much searching after moving to Chicago from Michigan two years ago, I have finally found my new salon! Hooray! read more

I see Mikahel (spelling?) here at the Wicker Park location. Never before have I had someone so great that I can trust. I'm not one of those people who knows what do do with my hair, but I want it to be hip and fun, and she has taken me from long princess hair to having the short sassy hair I have now, that totally suits me. I trust her completely, she's the best. She'll figure out who you are and help you have that hair...so don't be intimidated by the hipsterville world of Art + Science. They are great. read more

Kim Kroll is the BEST stylist I have EVER had. Not only is my initial cut amazing but working with her over the year it grows into even better style! I have sent the pickiest and most critical (in terms of their hair) to Kim and they have stuck with her in addition to sending more people her way. If you are in search of a men's (or women's) hair-stylist, try Kim Kroll out. I tried this one in December via Groupon which once said It was good and a must try. On the paper, it looked good even though I prefer barbershop than "fashion" salon. Well, it was only on the paper... - check-in: hostess busy and don t look at you kindly, - A bit noisy and you keep your coat with you, - Timing: perfect ! - Staff member was nice unlike the check-in staff, - She took my coat and put it near the floor surrounded by hair...(no hanger) - shampoo was fast and not something exciting... - cut was fast and my ears hurt. My first review was 3 years ago .. when Charlie left and Isobel stepped in ... Isobel has since left and Charlie has returned ... but I have found ... Vanessa! I need not review the salon a second time, rather I need to applaud Vanessa's ability to give me a great cut every time and yet reinvent my super short style to keep it interesting. She is also quite a character in her own right .. sharing bits of her life, her interests, her opinions but maintaining a polite and professional relationship. She simply brightens my day. read more

I got my hair cut here around the end of April/beginning of May and realized I never wrote a review! I had a great experience here. When I called, they were able to fit me in same day which was really nice. Coco cut my hair and she did a great job. I hadn't gotten my hair cut in 2 & 1/2 years (Horrible I know), but I had been a broke college student for most of that time. Nonetheless, I loved my haircut. I told Coco that I wear clip in hair extensions normally and have been for about 4 years and she cut my hair so it would still be easy to blend my extensions in or still look good without them. Super please with my final cut and need to go back soon to try out their colorists! read more

I've never had a stylist that I liked till I found Mikael! I have really curly hair and have recieved cuts from people who have no clue how to cut curly hair and pretend that they do! But enough of that. Mikael is awesome. I've been to her 4 times now and each time she starts out by playing with my hair to see how it falls and then we talk about what I want and what she recommends and then find a happy meeting place. :o) One of the things I liked about Mikael is that she's advocate for curly hair. I have a bad habbit of flat ironing my curls and she's convinced me to wear it curly more often. I had set up a free curly hair style/blow dry session with her and ever since I've been more willing to wear my hair curly. She's an awesome hair stylist and fun to talk to! So far I've sent 3 friends to see Mikael and all have loved her as well. read more

Haircuts make me nervous. So as someone new to Chicago, I was a little scared about finding a new place to get my hair done. I found Charlie at A&S. He greeted me warmly with a hug, and I could tell that he was just an overall nice guy, regardless of what he did to my hair. He listened to what I had to say, and was observant of my personality and style when we were chatting about what direction to take my cut. He's also a stickler for the details, which in hair is important. When I get my hair cut I really want someone confidant, since it helps to calm the butterflies I get when I go in. I really almost feel sorry for Charlie, since I'm pretty nervous and not very good w/ conversation while the cut is happening. But in the end, my hair looks good, and I feel great. I've had other people at A&S for band trims (free!) and they've all been good, but for now I'm loyal to Charlie. If you are thinking of bringing him a gift, go for a nice stout beer, he gets too many cookies. read more

Art & Science gets 5 stars from me because Kim is amazing. Every single haircut Kim has given me has elicited unending compliments from friends, coworkers and literally strangers--one recently at MDW. Kim has been cutting my hair since spring 2007, and I love her: always professional, just the right amount of chat, responsive/creative/encouraging about cut choices, excellent eye for style and a great cut. I've been going to Art + Science for 3 years now and recommend it to all of my friends. Hannah, my stylist, is amazing! I have very thin fine hair and she makes me look like I have a LOT more hair. Hannah is almost always on time and is super friendly. She also is excellent at cutting hair, which I really appreciate. I've also seen Bridgette a few time for color and she is also fantastic! I tend to be very vague about what I'm looking for because I'm really not sure what would be best and she has always made me look great. I get compliments on my color every time. The salon itself is also great - I love the option of a tea, coffee, water or wine while you wait. They also have always taken my coat. It is a hipster atmosphere but it's a friendly one. read more

If you want to pay way too much for a haircut you could easily get at Supercuts, then march right in to Art+Science! I went twice in 2006 for a haircut here and neither time did they do what I asked. The second time I went I'd barely call it a haircut. It seemed the woman (Jessica) was afraid to cut my hair, and all I had asked for were some layers and a bit of a shorter crown. I kept having to direct her. I basically paid $50 for her to play with my hair for an hour. I think it's a common misperception that if a place charges a lot, takes a long time, does a lot of texturizing, and serves booze, they are super hip and cutting edge. In reality, salons like this make money off their "cool factor." The trainees here make minimum wage for upwards of two years just to train in the Art+Science "methods," and customers are raped by the prices. So. over. it. read more

I have the most difficult hair in the world and was settling with an OK haircut because I've had some terrible luck. ...And then Seven was referred to me by a co-worker in the beauty industry. OMG - Seven, don't you dare leave my life. I might have to buy this woman a diamond ring and lock this relationship down. She talked me thru everything and made me completely trust her. I even got bangs which is something I would have never done but I LOVE IT. The salon itself is also very nice. Very cozy and I love the location. Clean, happy environment.
