My husband and I were in the Ashland area today and found Around The Table after a Google search. We were warmly greeted and promptly seated. The atmosphere was quite charming, calm, and pleasant. My husband ordered the Bologna burger and I ordered the seafood platter. To my delight the food arrived quickly. My husband gave great accolades for his Bologna burger and side of crinkle fries (they were yummy as I had several). My seafood dish was fantabulous except for the fish. The crab cake was divine and looked like it had little to no filler. The shrimp were huge and tender. There were 2 pieces of fried fish with very little meat and had several bones within. Though it had a very delectable coating, it was tough, chewy, and hard to swallow I'm sad to say. Very subpar compared to the rest of the meal. I would highly recommend acquiring a new fishmonger asap! The cornbread muffin was delicious. The accompanying Cole slaw was dynamite (my husband agreed) and the collard greens were the !!! OMG! Mmmmm mmmm gooood The service was excellent and on point! The interior was squeaky clean and the music quite pleasant. My rating: B+. It would have been A+ had the fish been as exceptional as the rest of the meal. read more

We tried this restaurant on a whim. Husband is in town for work and I wanted some good country cooking. The restaurant is clean, the staff are smiling and friendly. And the meatloaf was AWESOME! The mashed potatoes were so creamy and yummy. The owner/chef Ammie even came out to the table to check on us. She was so gracious and humble. We will most definitely be back. If you are in town and want a great home-cooked style meal, you MUST try Around the Table! read more

Food was cooked just right and with good size helpings. Service was 10/10. The ambience is a little bit like a small cafe. Highly recommend this restaurant read more

The owners of this place present an appealing story that makes me sad to present a relatively unfavorable review, but honesty to my fellow consumers must take first priority. We ate on the day after a major snowstorm, entering a fairly barren eating space with a number of tables, only one of which was occupied. The restaurant was out of a number of their standard dishes. My wife had the fish sandwich and I had the fried fish platter, which were OK. But the sides were seriously wanting. My wife is a connoisseur of mac and cheeses, and she was pleased to perceive that it was baked mac and cheese, not boiled, but it tasted to her as if it came out of a box. Spoonbread was runny, genuinely unpleasant texture, and my wife found the collard greens to be inedibly salty. Service was fine. But although the sign at the door said masks were required to enter, our wait person was not wearing a mask at all. Nor were the other diners. Yuck. read more

My husband and I had dinner at this lovely restaurant on Saturday June 14 th. We were welcomed like family as though we ate dinner there ever night. We were traveling back to Pennsylvania. The food is absolutely delicious and very generous. Tables were filled with families, young and older couples who were enjoying their dinners and appreciative of the kind service. Sincerely Nancy read more

Yummy food. Very nice owner. We just chowed down big-time after a long morning of showing up at Doswell. Southern home style cooking. Highly recommend the fried fish and the wings. Desserts are homemade. Good coffee, too. read more

Excellent service. Good southern food. Great down home atmosphere. They treat you like family. A truly hidden gem.

Excellent authentic soul food with gigantic servings and very reasonably priced. One wonders how they make money. Delicious friend chicken and catfish. Mac and cheese and collards perfect. Many selections including some vegetarian. Clean pleasant establishment with friendly staff free refills on drinks. Clean bathrooms. Very busy after church on Sundays. Had quite a wait but worth it. read more

The food was amazing if you want Southern catfish, look no further I really like the vibe here. It's nice to have a local spot down the street from my house but I would consider this a destination because real southern soul food isn't easy to come by and I think it would be worth the drive to come to this Restaurant? The only negative I would say is they had a young and clearly untrained wait staff, which seemed to be a bit confused at times, but it was worth dealing with for the delicious food read more

When we arrived, no one else was there. Service was pretty slow tho the waitress was friendly. Took about 15 mins to get our drinks then 30-40 mins to get our food. By this time, a few more folks arrived. Food was very good. I had the fish sandwich with potato salad and my partner had a burger with collards. Everything was really good. Collards were a little salty but good. I wish the sandwich automatically came with tarter sauce. Took another 10 mins to get that. Took about 20 mins to get a refill of tea and the check. They can definitely work on efficiency. We will be back. read more

Wonderful staff and the food is good I would recommend to anyone who's looking for some southern comfort food. read more

So I've heard good things about this newer soul food restaurant in Ashland. My younger brother loves seafood especially fried fish so I thought it would be nice to surprise him with an early dinner. He couldn't say enough positives about the food, fish, Mac and cheese and cabbage and corn muffin was really good. I did sample the cabbage and Mac and they were both really good. I'm not big on fish...yeah I know I know so I didn't sample that. What did catch my attention was spoon bread or some may know it as "batterbread". I wish I hadn't wasted my $3 for a side of it. I'll say because I've made it a few times that it was not incorporated very well, it's like all the cornmeal was on the bottom and the "custard" was all on top versus mixed to form an also soufflé..so yeah I'm the trash it went, definitely inedible. So sad as I relive the moment. I will definitely go back as they have a very tasty looking menu. read more

Around The Table - 2pc fried fish with cabbage and Mac and cheese - Soul Food Near Me - Ashland, Virginia

Once again. Around The Table fed and cared for us with a lunch of meatloaf, fried fish, and delectable vegetable sides. Get the fried fish. Best I've ever had! The coating was gossamer-thin, beautifully seasoned, and crispy with the fish perfectly cooked and moist. Oh my. Fried okra was top notch. Husband loved his meatloaf with yams and green beans. The iced tea was great too. Be blessed and come for a meal! read more

Hit this place on a Sunday while my sister & I were on a road trip. Busy with families & the after-church lunch rush. The fried chicken (dark meat) was amazing. The breading & skin were air-light & crispy & perfectly salty. 1 leg & a partial thigh with very few bones. Came out super fresh & too hot to handle! But really delicious once I could! Worked on the sides while I waited for my chicken to cool off. The sweet potatoes are almost a dessert, super sweet. I think I tasted honey, maybe brown sugar. The potato salad is really great. Has mustard, mayo, & celery seed. The collard greens are salty and savory with no ham or pork bits. The fried okra has a great light crunch & texture, but was lacking in salt for my taste. The mac & cheese also has a nice texture but I prefer it saltier as well. Also tried their spoon bread. This has the flavor of cornbread but is a little milder. Has the texture of grits. Slightly sweet. A nice dish that is neither too savory nor too sweet, but has a good neutral flavor. The corn muffins have a great flavor, a little bit sweet. There is a nice crust on top and the inside is crumbly but not too dry, just moist enough. Also had an Arnold Palmer made with half sweet tea and half lemonade. Really thirst quenching and refreshing. Hit the spot. The owner/chef is super sweet and friendly. She kept checking on us to make sure everything was OK. The wait staff is also very friendly and fast. I would be eating here all the time if I lived nearby! read more

Food was hot and tasty. Service was friendly and prompted. Like coming home to grandmas.

Mac & cheese was perfect this time. Ordered the catfish again because it's that good!! Tried the cabbage and it was on point. Definitely two thumbs up to this place. You won't be disappointed. read more

Fabulous food and service. Like being at home! Never had a bad meal here. Just ask for the daily specials.

I'm not sure how to start. I WANT this restaurant to succeed and I feel it will. There was the remnant of a small birthday party near the front door and a few people were milling around, at least two with masks half on. We were not greeted and decided to go stand in line at the counter, where we were then greeted. I feel the tables could have been spaced a bit further apart. These facts made us decide to order to go. I ordered the NC BBQ sandwich with collards and she ordered the seafood platter (whiting, crab cake and shrimp) with green beans and yams. As it was our first time, we also tried the Mac and cheese and potato salad. We were told our food would be ready in about 20 minutes and it was. The crab cake was not very flavorful, the whiting and shrimp were good. The green beans were seasoned oddly but the yams were tasty. The BBQ was okay, tender but on your basic store brand bun. The collards were tasty and the Mac and cheese decent. The potato salad was good. Realizing this restaurant is just starting up, I get the slight feeling of disorganization. We drove several miles out of our way to give Around the Table a try. We will give them a little time and try them again. read more

I've been several times and never disappointed. Great staff and very friendly. Place is quaint and clean. I've had chicken wings, collard greens, cabbage, yams, fried whiting, Mac and cheese, crab cakes, chicken livers and meatloaf..all delicious! And the spoon bread ! Cakes are ALL DELISH. You cannot go wrong. Bring everybody around the table. read more

Went there on a Sunday afternoon. They were crowded when we arrived but they seated us relatively quickly. The waitress was running around like crazy and took a while to take our order. After taking our order it took a stomach-growling time for our food to arrive. Got the seafood platter with yams and string beans. The platter had fish, shrimp, and a crab cake. Everything was well and not over-seasoned except the fish which didn't have much seasoning. Overall I would recommend this restaurant to all. The stage was very friendly and any one of the will help you if needed. read more

We found this place when a restaurant we were going to was closed. What a great place and wonderful service and the food was amazing.

If you like southern cooking, then this is the place to try. There is not going to be any "asian fusion" or "bark and twigs" meals here. But the fried fish and chicken, meatloaf, chicken livers, and collard greens are some of the best I've had in years. We tried the chicken livers and fried chicken dinners. Tasted just like my mother's home cooking! The staff is very friendly and welcoming, and the chef, Ms. Ammie comes out to check on the guests when she can. And the spoonbread... oh my gosh, delicious! Everything was cooked perfectly, and we enjoyed our meal and the conversation with the owner and other guests. We will be returning soon! read more
