We tried this restaurant on a whim. Husband is in town for work and I wanted some good country cooking. The restaurant is clean, the staff are smiling and friendly. And the meatloaf was AWESOME! The mashed potatoes were so creamy and yummy. The owner/chef Ammie even came out to the table to check on us. She was so gracious and humble. We will most definitely be back. The owners of this place present an appealing story that makes me sad to present a relatively unfavorable review, but honesty to my fellow consumers must take first priority. We ate on the day after a major snowstorm, entering a fairly barren eating space with a number of tables, only one of which was occupied. The restaurant was out of a number of their standard dishes. My wife had the fish sandwich and I had the fried fish platter, which were OK. But the sides were seriously wanting. My wife is a connoisseur of mac and cheeses, and she was pleased to perceive that it was baked mac and cheese, not boiled, but it tasted to her as if it came out of a box. Spoonbread was runny, genuinely unpleasant texture, and my wife found the collard greens to be inedibly salty. Service was fine. But although the sign at the door said masks were required to enter, our wait person was not wearing a mask at all. Nor were the other diners. Yuck. read more

When we arrived, no one else was there. Service was pretty slow tho the waitress was friendly. Took about 15 mins to get our drinks then 30-40 mins to get our food. By this time, a few more folks arrived. Food was very good. I had the fish sandwich with potato salad and my partner had a burger with collards. Everything was really good. Collards were a little salty but good. I wish the sandwich automatically came with tarter sauce. Took another 10 mins to get that. Took about 20 mins to get a refill of tea and the check. So I've heard good things about this newer soul food restaurant in Ashland. My younger brother loves seafood especially fried fish so I thought it would be nice to surprise him with an early dinner. He couldn't say enough positives about the food, fish, Mac and cheese and cabbage and corn muffin was really good. I did sample the cabbage and Mac and they were both really good. I'm not big on fish...yeah I know I know so I didn't sample that. What did catch my attention was spoon bread or some may know it as "batterbread". I wish I hadn't wasted my $3 for a side of it. I'll say because I've made it a few times that it was not incorporated very well, it's like all the cornmeal was on the bottom and the "custard" was all on top versus mixed to form an also soufflé..so yeah I'm the trash it went, definitely inedible. Hit this place on a Sunday while my sister & I were on a road trip. Busy with families & the after-church lunch rush. The fried chicken (dark meat) was amazing. The breading & skin were air-light & crispy & perfectly salty. 1 leg & a partial thigh with very few bones. Came out super fresh & too hot to handle! But really delicious once I could! Worked on the sides while I waited for my chicken to cool off. The sweet potatoes are almost a dessert, super sweet. I think I tasted honey, maybe brown sugar. The potato salad is really great. Has mustard, mayo, & celery seed. The collard greens are salty and savory with no ham or pork bits. The fried okra has a great light crunch & texture, but was lacking in salt for my taste. The mac & cheese also has a nice texture but I prefer it saltier as well. Also tried their spoon bread. This has the flavor of cornbread but is a little milder. Has the texture of grits. Slightly sweet. A nice dish that is neither too savory nor too sweet, but has a good neutral flavor. The corn muffins have a great flavor, a little bit sweet. There is a nice crust on top and the inside is crumbly but not too dry, just moist enough. Also had an Arnold Palmer made with half sweet tea and half lemonade. Really thirst quenching and refreshing. Hit the spot. The owner/chef is super sweet and friendly. She kept checking on us to make sure everything was OK. There was the remnant of a small birthday party near the front door and a few people were milling around, at least two with masks half on. We were not greeted and decided to go stand in line at the counter, where we were then greeted. I feel the tables could have been spaced a bit further apart. These facts made us decide to order to go. I ordered the NC BBQ sandwich with collards and she ordered the seafood platter (whiting, crab cake and shrimp) with green beans and yams. As it was our first time, we also tried the Mac and cheese and potato salad. We were told our food would be ready in about 20 minutes and it was. The crab cake was not very flavorful, the whiting and shrimp were good. The green beans were seasoned oddly but the yams were tasty. The BBQ was okay, tender but on your basic store brand bun. The collards were tasty and the Mac and cheese decent. The potato salad was good. Realizing this restaurant is just starting up, I get the slight feeling of disorganization. Went there on a Sunday afternoon. They were crowded when we arrived but they seated us relatively quickly. The waitress was running around like crazy and took a while to take our order. After taking our order it took a stomach-growling time for our food to arrive. Got the seafood platter with yams and string beans. The platter had fish, shrimp, and a crab cake. Everything was well and not over-seasoned except the fish which didn't have much seasoning. Overall I would recommend this restaurant to all. My husband and I ate here during a trip on Thursday when meatloaf is the special. Oh my goodness....it was soooo good!! We both thought it was probably the best meatloaf we have ever had.
