While I am no perfume aficionado, I had a wonderful experience here and left with a perfume that I really love! I booked an experience through GroupOn and thought it was a great value and fun activity to do with a partner or friend. This was my first time doing any experience like this so I didn't know what to expect. They start by seating you at a table with about 40 different scent bottles. After circling scents you enjoy, one of the employees blends together 3-4 options and creates a few new scents to choose from. I thought they had a decent variety of oils to choose from, but would have liked some more fresh options. However, I loved all of the blends that were created for me! The store itself did have a lot of smells going on, which is expected. I think it made it a little difficult to really pick up the notes of the perfumes once they were blended. While I still love my perfume, I definitely thought it smelled a lot different at home vs. the store! Also would have loved the option to try a few different scents on the skin before picking one to take home. All in all I had a really great time and recommend trying this place! read more

We first sat down and we're told to pick out ten of our favorite scents and circle them on a list they gave us. The staff then use the scents we select to creat a unique combination for us using the profiles we picked. We then picked one of these combinations to take home in a 3 oz perfume bottle, and we were very pleased with how the scents came out! Can't wait to go back. read more

I always want to do something special for my best friend's birthday. That always involves a meal, wine and some type of activity. This year, I ended up booking us into Aroma Workshop for a perfume making experience. It's not cheap but it turned out to be quite fun and we both walked away with a lovely customized scent. So...Normally this perfume making session runs $120, but I snagged a Groupon for $59. This seemed to be a great deal buttttttt there are some added on expenses once you get there. My lovely Groupon didn't mention I would need to pay $12.30 tax when I went in, plus a tip. So...I ended up paying $30 on top of my Groupon so $90 for the whole shebang. Le sigh. Pricing aside, it was a fun experience though. From the time we walked in to when we left was about 45 minutes. Upon sitting down, you are presented with vials of what seems like a million scents. You pick 7-10 that you like and the staff then creates blends based on those you like. The staff helping us was very well informed and friendly which made for a fun time. We both ended up with old timey looking, beautifully elegant atomizers full of our customized scents. They also put a label on the bottle so your signature scent can have a fun name. Word on the street is they'll keep your special smell on record forever so you can go back at any time for a refill. I believe they said a bottle being refilled was $30. Overall a fun time, could be great for a bachelorette party or something along those lines, but as to be expected with perfume, it's not cheap! BYOB folks! read more

Beware new owner-Ted retired and unfortunately it's a different experience. I was so excited to introduce my friends to Aroma workshop as I used to go and take clients all the time in the 90's and early 20's. It was small and much more personal attention. Today we were ignored! The place was packed! I was parking the car and dropped my friends off. When I came in -the first thing I was told is that my friends could not use their Groupon-that I got them as a gift-for 5 people or more. Why? No reason-but I knew this and had already bowed out so my 4 other friends could experience Aroma. Thank you and welcome to Aroma lol! The person that helped us proceeded to ignore us unless we asked for help. On the way home my friends told me that nothing was explained before I came in-but they were handed their sheets and scents to pick out so I thought they were set? Ugh! My friends and I came in for a Signature Scent Creation workshop today, and we had such a blast! We are already talking about coming back for an upcoming birthday. The shop itself is adorable. They have dozens of scents and they sell lotion, linen spray, scrubs, fancy atomizers- anything you could want scented. The young woman we mostly worked with Grace and she was so friendly and helpful. The other staffer was great too but I didn't catch their name, sorry! I can't recommend this enough as a fun group activity. And I love the scent I came home with. read more

Came across a Groupon -2 of us made an appointment for two Saturdays ago- we're so glad we went. Yes it was pretty crowded with lots of ladies and a few men. This is a fun and great energy place - how could it not be?? You get to create your own scent which is your proprietary blend and you can make more than one! Not only will you walk out with a custom perfume but that scent can then be added to a variety of products they have for sale, salt scrubs, creams, shampoo and conditioner etc. it's fun affordable and great products plus the aromatherapists couldn't have been better. Do you ever wonder "what is my signature scent?" Well come to Aroma Workshop to find out! You first walk in or make an appointment and start smelling their many scents. Circle your favorites, and the scent master will create multiple combinations based on your selections. You choose your favorite combination, bottle type (spray, roll-on, etc.), and then choose a name for your scent (i.e. "Gary", "One night stand" or my favorite "Forev-amoré" get it?!). Reasonable price for the experience and scent and they've been in this business since the 70s, so they know a thing or two. I got to know the owner Ted as well as Evangelina and they were just fun and easy to talk to. Being a broke grad student, I came in with the intention to just smell everything and leave like an asshole but through this process I decided to go for it and I am pretty happy. I had a groupon and thus was introduced to this place. I had totally different expectations of what this place would look like, something in a cross between Aveda and West Elm. Luckily, it was nothing like that. Aroma Workshop seems to belong in NYC than in LP. It's a small little shop run by one person who's been doing this for the last 18 years. You have to make an appointment, which I did and got there a little early. Ted, the owner, was with me soon after and talked me through the process. I came with a almost empty bottle of Hugo Boss that I wanted to mimic, but I ended up (with the help of Ted) a better derivative. Of course, I named my scent and now when this eventually finishes, I can just go and pick my custom scent anytime. I took a friend here as a birthday present. My friend loves colognes, fragrances and/ or Eau de toilette. He even recognizes the differences between them all. So of course, I figured this place would be right up his alley!!! Even though, he does not get excited much, I realized that this place perked his interests! The perfumistas start by telling you to smell the different aromas that are placed in bottled in front of your section. Then, they tell you to pick the ones you like. Lastly, they start mixing some of the scents that you like up, to form your own fragrance. It was so much fun. Not to mention, how enlightening, it was for me to find out exactly what base scents I have been attracted to over the years. After an hour or so of sniffing, literally. I eventually came up with my very own fragrance, by Z. His scent was named jump my body and was a true manly smell. They gave us a choice of bottles and created a label for our fragrances. All and all, this place is worth a visit. If you can get one of the Living Social deals, then it is most definitely worth it! Just don't forget that the taxes and tip are not included in the special price. Unfortunately, I was reminded of this multiple times.... Now that was a bit annoying. So I paid for both, as soon as I walked into the door. I just didn't want to hear it anymore! Want to know what I didn't before walking into the Aroma Workshop? These are differences between aromas. Let's start with, I had no clue how to tell the difference between them all. Just in case you do not know whether, here's a little explanation courtesy of Google!!! LOL. The experience was beyond amazing! Wanted to do something special for my bf's and my anniversary and glad I found this place. I used to pass by the store during my college years and always wanted to come in. Found a deal for 2 for only $55 (not including the sales tax) and you got to take home a 2.2 oz of your own customized perfume after you pick your top scents. They will create 4 different combinations for your final product and you get to choose your favorite. Such a fun event to do with your friends, partner or even by yourself! Right at the beginning we were greeted by Tedd, Piper, and Mina (who created our final scent) who were so helpful. Definitely a must when you're in the heart of Lincoln Park! Now we have my bf's and my favorite scent for each other to treasure! They will save your scent for you if you ever need a replacement. How awesome! One minor issue was that we found some dust/piece of hair in the bottle. To some it might be a big deal, which can definitely be avoided but it was easily removed with a tweezer. read more

Immediate reaction after making my perfume: I literally love this place, cute little shop with the sweetest girls working there. We did a living social and when we arrived we were greeted with kindness and started our olfactory adventure. With each got a set of oils to smell and there were so many choices the name of the game is just pick what you like and worry about mixing later. So after picking out perfume creator Peyton started mixing based on the ones we picked. It was so much fun seeing the perfumes come together. After much indecision on my part we got out bottles mixed and named our perfumes 'young buddha' and 'farm house' ... All in all a lovely time and a fun activity to do as a couple or with friends. Aroma Workshop is where you go to make your own fragrances from essential oils. I cannot emphasize enough how much fun this is. They have a ton of essential oils and designer fragrances to mix together and to add to lotions, sprays, bubble bath etc. The staff guide you through the process patiently and are extremely helpful and good at answering questions. They also will help you decide which scents go together based on your particular likes and dislikes. The only problem is this is so much fun, that everyone and the mother comes here and the tiny store can get crowded real quick. On the positive side you walk away with an affordable, aromatic work of art that's all original. The coolest thing is that they will keep your mixture on file, so you won't have to guess what it was that you made when you come in for a refill. It's also fun to name your fragrance. Aroma Workshop is a great place to bring your girlfriends or to purchase them a gift certificate so they can make their own unforgettable present. The tax is around $10. The appointment takes around 45 minutes to an hour. Book ahead of time to ensure your appointment! Leah was an excellent perfumer. We were guided by her but were still able to enjoy our own experience. The perfume is excellent. If you need a fun girls day/night, this is a great place! I went with 2 of my colleagues and we had a great time! First, make note that it's very small. I'd say they could comfortably sit 6 people at the scent bar ( I don't know what it's called, I made that up!) It sounds like they do travel to you though if you set it up far in advance so keep that in mind! Second, it's BYOB. I'd say this is a huge win! (or not because I think wine makes everything smell a bit better than it really does! See the end of my review ;)) The employees there are so nice and personable. We had the place to ourselves so it was just 3 of us and the 3 people working. They were very engaging, provided cups for our wine and explained how to get started. Once we started smelling all the oils and marking our faves ( or least favorites) they were helping us and educating us on oils/perfumes, etc. It was pretty neat! I have to say that by the end, whether it was the wine or the fact that I had just smelled 70 oils, everything was starting to smell the same. I thought I had a real winner in my perfume that was created... until the next day. It smells differently than I remembered from the day before. So did my friends. Granted, the ladies who work there did tell us to give it a few days because the alcohol and oils can be extra strong in the beginning. So... we'll wait a few days and see! I would love to be able to actually wear my perfume but if not, I honestly don't mind. It was such a fun time and I'd do it again! If you're looking for a high end designer perfume smell, and you think it's going to be created on your first try, this may not be the place for you. I love that I was able to make a perfume that spoke to me - with the help of someone who actually knew what they were doing :P Audrey helped myself and my friend out - we had a groupon which was really an amazing deal. Audrey clearly knows her stuff and was able to help my friend nail a particular scent she had in mind and described - as well as help my indecisive self who when I had no idea what I was looking for. I ended up getting a lotion and a little necklace vial with my fragrance as well as the spray perfume that was included with the groupon. I am OBSESSED with my necklace. Hey hey, is Ryan reviewing a beauty supply shop? Say what? In the interest of full disclosure, and at the risk of having my man card taken away, I've been a customer here for many years. Though I've never bought anything for myself, I've gotten many gifts here. I've purchased enough that i was in their rolodex of regular customers (now all the info is on a laptop). They keep your creations and ingredient list on the computer for future visits. It's a really cool place i happened upon one drunken stroll some night years ago and have been going to ever since. They have lotions, shampoos, soaps, perfumes, among other products. I like that they have their various scents in different scientific flasks behind the counter. Not to mention the tiny bottles with the sample scents on the counter. You can pick and customize your own scents into one of their products or go with one of their recommendations. I usually go with something that smells nice and fruity and makes me hungry. Yeah, pretty scientific for this scientist. You can have your purchases gift wrapped, and they do an awesome job of it. They could teach classes on elegant gift wrapping, they make it so damn pretty. The owner is very friendly and quite willing to help if you have any questions. It's interesting how one bad experience can ruin a previously good one. I dropped in Aroma Workshop on Saturday, July 28 after stopping by the Green City Market with my buddy. It was our first time in the shop and we both decided to make simple room sprays that we've enjoyed in the two months since. I had a decent experience, so I thought I'd take my girlfriend in to make her a room spray and maybe a lotion or massage oil. We popped in after brunch at Nookies Too up the street at around 11:40 yesterday. The shop is empty except for a single employee, but when I describe what I'd like to do I was told that Saturdays are appointment only, they take 45 minutes, and that they were booked all day. Here's my complaint: * Nowhere on their website does it say Saturdays are appointment only, and that they take that amount of time (my first visit took maybe 10-15 minutes and the owner and other employee seemed capable of helping more than one person at a time). * I didn't see a notice on the door to the shop other than their hours. * Under "By appointment only" on Yelp, it says "No". * There were no other customers in the shop. Also, I explained I had walked in off the street on a random Saturday two months ago and the employee suggested it must have been a weekday. I understand she was doing her job, and maybe her next appointment was due to arrive in 5 minutes, but I was so excited to share my previous good experience with my girlfriend and in under two minutes we both walked out of the shop incredibly disappointed. I can't understand why a business would basically tell someone "we don't want your money". Unfortunately this seems to be the only shop of its kind in Chicago, and as I said, I did enjoy what I made on my first visit. When I run out of my existing bottle I'll probably give it another chance (and make an appointment online), but man, I'm not that psyched to go back. I picked up a gift certificate for Aroma Workshop at one of the Yelp Elite events. It seemed that making your own scent would be a pretty neat gift. Though I gave the cert as a gift I was pretty excited. I read Dhruv P's review and released I should call again, so I did, and I spoke with a very nice guy. He seemed a little unorganized with picking a time for me, but after realizing I was from Yelp he commented that the slot he gave me would allow for some extra time. Wow, great! This place is sounding pretty good. So we arrived exactly on time, and there was a couple finishing up before us. I thought it was odd that the perfumer did not great us, but I dismissed it. Well, I guess that was a signal, because the perfumer we were working with seemed like she would rather have been any place but there. I can understand that job becoming repetitive, but she did not even feign interest. Getting her to talk was like pulling teeth. This lack of rapport turned what we expected to be a great experience, into and uncomfortable situation that seemed as if we were imposing just being there. As you can imagine, we did not get much input from the perfumer, who seemed to get more aggregated each time we asked for a new sample to be mixed up. If she really did not feel well, perhaps she should have taken a sick day. In the end she took the two oils selected - "White Tea" and "Pomegranate" - poured equal parts into a bottle, added some cologne base and bid us a good day. I think Aroma Workshop is a pretty neat place, I think it could have been a great experience, but the service we received just fell short. I am glad that we had a gift certificate to use because I could not justify paying full price for the service. Holy olfactory heaven!! My gal pal and I decided to embark on yet another adventure, and decided that designing our own scent would be a super activity to add to our list. Upon walking in Aroma Workshop, I was smacked with scents galore. Sweet, spicy, woodsy, musky, citrus, all tickling my nostrils. We had a wonderful time concocting our perfect scents. Yes, we were on sniffer overload, but the inhaling of coffee beans helped us reset our smelling abilities! The young gal behind the counter, helped us through the entire process, including picking our perfume bottle and assisting us in naming our fragrances. Besides having the opportunity to design a fragrance, there are many items for sale too. Lotions, soaps, bath beads, etc...anything that will add a pleasant odor to your daily routine. This is definitely one adventure to remember. What a terrific way to spend a couple hours, embarking on an activity that may not be embarked on regularly! read more

As someone who has severe allergies and wants to do something fun on her birthday every year- Aroma Workshop seemed to check off all boxes. The owner was amazing the scent sommeliers were phenomenal. They helped everyone pick their scent while making everyone feel welcome. When we were there- there was a snow storm and the owner was sweet enough to go and pick up coffee for everyone. I enjoy spending an entire weekend fiddling with virtual synths to make electronic music on my laptop, and I can spend countless hours trying on shoes searching for the perfect pair of heels. I majored in computer science but now I am a jewelry designer. I like dogs, table tennis, air hockey, skeeball, plushies, modern furniture, gadgets, and fancy wine. It's a strange blend of interests for a human female so I figured it would be impossible to create my personal fragrance from an array of 100+ essential oils, or it would require n amount of hours where n is greater than 3. My assumptions were wrong in this case. Employing the inherent procedural knowledge of the owner Ted and his staff results in informed pairings of essential oils that begin to form the fragrance. The entire computation time of the fragrance construction algorithm was only 1.25 hours. Another neat thing is that they have a selection of unscented hand creams, body oils, shower gels, bubble baths and the like that can scented with your custom fragrance. It's far less expensive than pre-made perfumes and a greater value since it's an interactive process (user-generated content). They also hold "Scent Events" where you round up at least four friends and you each get to make your own personal fragrance. Check this place out and you won't go back to other people's ideas of what you should smell like. read more

I had just finished watching the episode of "New Girl" in which Schmidt goes to one of those make your own perfume places for Cece and gets her a bottle of sandalwood smelling rancidness. A few weeks prior, I had purchased a Groupon for my friend as a Christmas gift at the Aroma Workshop. Was I to suffer the same fate as Schmidt and create a scent causing me to walk around wishing I had skipped my French shower and opted for my BO.? Would this result in sending me straight to the gift-giving Hall of Shame? Not at all. No Yelp review can prepare you for this place and when I got there it was nothing like what I had in mind, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing. Take a seat at the scent bar and start sniffing away. Take some breaks to smell the coffee beans; you are in this for the long haul. Your job is to set aside the fragrances that speak to you and let the pros create the fragrance for you. This is probably for the best, as a couple of the "woodsy" fragrances seemed to speak to me. My friend and I each had 4-6 sample scents created for us. I finally settle on a sweet blend of pink sugar, chaos, and french vanilla. My friend got a more flowery scent that was subdued with the help of white tea. You can get your custom fragrance in one of those spray-bulb atomizers, which was really the icing on our cakes. The whole experience took a little over half an hour. We paired it with some shopping and dinner at Cafe Ba Ba Reeba a couple of stores down. A tip to people looking to experience the Aroma Workshop: Schedule your appointment around 4:30 on a Saturday afternoon. They close at 6pm, which leaves you plenty of time to create your fragrance and finishes you up right in time for dinner. At this time parking will be a breeze; we were able to park right in between the Aroma Workshop and the restaurant. I thought the staff was knowledgeable and really friendly. My only gripe was the price. The Groupon I got was for two custom fragrances for two people for $50. Paying twice that amount (their normal price) just seems outrageous. I think this would make an awesome gift for my mom, but I wouldn't even think about it if coupon weren't in hand. read more

I finally used my Yelp deal with only a couple weeks left until it expired. Phew! The website recommends calling for an appointment. No problem. I arrive on time to find the store was still closed. Um. I was pretty sure I had booked for this time and day. The store was supposed to be open either way. I called and left a message while still standing outside. I decided to stick around the neighborhood (shopping!) in case they were having a late start. An hour and half later, I came back to see the store had opened. Hooray! And, at the time, I had the store to myself. The employee walked me through the process and what I was to get out of my Yelp coupon. I normally go for perfumes with a little bit of citrus and flowers. So she directed me to those bottles and to leave out the ones I liked the most. From there, she concocted different mixtures. I finally picked a scent and an accompanying bottle, on which, I could name and label. I'm not a celebrity but found a printout label of my "perfume" name pretty amusing. It was a fun and interesting experience and will be back. One of the final fragrance contenders would make a good Christmas gift for my mom. In addition to perfumes, they have other products for body and face care (i.e. moisturizers, soap, and bath salts), room fragrances, and atomizers and other gift basket ideas. I came in about a year ago to redeem a LivingSocial voucher for a 4 oz bottle of customized perfume. I know very little about perfume - all I can tell you is what I like. I don't know about the "notes" that are in different scents, or anything technical. I was a bit nervous that I was going to somehow mix something that was disgusting. Tedd, the owner, was super helpful and helped me blend a gorgeous scent. The oils that he mixed together (Kiwi, Big Sur and Sage) are scents that I never thought I'd wear, but they suit me. When I let my sisters smell my concoction, they agreed that it suited me. A couple of months after that, I brought in my mom for Mother's Day. I wanted her to be able to blend her own scent as well. She was much more methodical in her selection - she wanted to see what all the oils smelled like - and Tedd put together some awesome combinations for her. When she made her final selection, I knew she was really happy! We definitely appreciated the time that Tedd put into the appointment. A bottle of perfume at Aroma Workshop is generally cheaper than the brands at the department store. They keep your scent on file, so you can easily get refills. They also have an online store, which I visited around Christmas to buy my mom some lotion and shower gel with her scent. Prices for those products are reasonable and you can't beat having a customized scent for your lotion! I'll definitely be back here. They offer private parties, which could be really cool for a bachelorette party or bridal shower. read more

So much fun! My gf setup an appointment here for us, and we had such a fun time. The perfume artist (? not sure if they have an official title) was very friendly and seemed to enjoy helping us. We spent somewhere between 30min and an hour developing our signature scents. It was fun picking out the oils we liked, and going "oh I think you'll like this one!" and sharing some. A really unique bonding experience, and now we a perfume & cologne that pair well together that will always remind us of each other. I bought the You Swoop they had going a while back for $40 to go towards your own custom scent and I finally got around to using it. I wasn't quite sure what to expect but from other yelp reviews I read, I knew it was going to be a fun time. Their store was a bit smaller than I thought it was going to be, but very nicely laid out. They have hooks for your coat and purse and then you get to choose a seat at the scent bar. They have a ton of scents ranging from fruity to citrusy to musky. What you do is sniff and then the ones you like you select. After you've done that part, an aroma expert helps you mix and match to come up with a customized scent that's all your own. After that the very nice staff shows you what products you can add your scent to. So, you could customize your own bath line or just put your fragrance in a bottle and squirt on as desired. I decided to customize a lotion and cream shower gel. For the lotion, I decided to go with their shea lotion and the fragrance I chose was mostly vanilla with a hint of musk. I forget the actual formula, so good thing they wrote it down for me and put in their aroma-dex for next time. I did the same scent for the shea cream shower gel as well. So, now I'm perfumed from head to toe in my very own scent for a reasonable price. I can't wait to go back and try more of their products. read more

I never ended up buying a scent here, but the girl behind the counter was very knowledgable and put a bunch of different combos together for me to smell based on my preferences and reactions. And by a bunch, I mean my mom and I were in there for 30 minutes sniffing away. Regardless of my inability to make an actual decision, she was super friendly and gave me a card with some of the scents I picked out in case I wanted to come back. I haven't been back yet (it's nearly impossible for me to pick perfume, let alone make one!) but hey, I tried and she certainly helped me out. read more

Everybody really wants to smell the way they want to smell, perhaps not the way they DO smell, and not the way their "products" smel either..... What's my point here? Aroma Workshop is a place you can make your own shampoo, deodorant, soaps, air sprays- exactly the way you want. I had this awesome shampoo that I love, and would put a conditioner in my hair after that smelled completely different- therefore losing my beautiful shampoo smell aura. I brought in my shampoo and the smell wizard at the counter matched the scent using oils and mixed them with a hair conditioner base. Wha- laa! Problem solved.:) This is a great place to match a perfume or scent you LOVE and make into something else useful (scented shea butter anyone?). They do a fabulous job matching smells to your very unique liking. Smell master I salute you! read more
