The regulation Isaac and I had previously scheduled is now complete. Throughout this review when I use the term "regulation," I don't refer to what formally constitutes that, since Isaac discovered loose hammer pins and never got to address the action work more commonly referred to as regulation, but addressing these pins would be a necessary prerequisite to the latter, and made a huge difference in playability (more on that below). He was scheduled to work from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. the day I wrote this review, but put in an extra two hours of work to make sure everything was correct. Words literally can't do justice to the quality of this technician's work. I'm extremely finicky about instrument quality- prior to going through with this piano regulation, I had spent almost a year-and-a-half looking for a new piano to purchase. Everything that felt and sounded amazing was at least $20,000.00 and no more than 20 years old. Isaac took an old, beat-up (but workable, as per Isaac's careful assessment) Yamaha G2 piano and, working off a limited budget, transformed it into an excellent instrument for it's age. He was honest and upfront about everything from the very beginning, fairly warning that surprises may come up while regulating: a testament to his great communication skills and the integrity with which he approaches this craft. The sound went from bright, harsh, and occasionally metallic, to a lush, velvety clarity, even with MINIMAL hammer shaping performed by Isaac; as per our game plan from the outset, Isaac was able to attain a great tone almost completely from working with mechanical adjustments to the instrument's action. Regarding playability, the difference is incredible. This is where the heart of my issues with the instrument were. Previously, the action was very sluggish - initial key depression was heavy, followed by a rickety, light click at the bottom. I love the smooth action of a brand new Yamaha piano. Through hours of meticulous labor, Isaac achieved something evocative of that at a fraction of a new piano's cost. In summary, I have a piano that plays and sounds great, achieved at a very reasonable (and competitive) price point. I anticipate being a long-term client. P.S. - I'd also like to give a shout-out to Dave, another Orpheus Piano Co. tech. He had tuned the piano in preparation for regulating it and did a terrific job. I contacted Orpheus Piano Co. seeking advice on an antique minipiano I was thinking about buying (limited space in a Brooklyn row house being an issue). Isaac advised me on questions to ask the seller and what to look and listen for in the quality of the instrument. After closer inspection, Isaac advised me that I might encounter problems with the instrument I was looking at, and offered me several alternative pianos. In the end I chose a spinet piano with all keys in working order. The piano was free, and Isaac arranged the move for the same day through Orpheus Piano. Just had my son's piano tuned and repaired. This was a very good experience right from the beginning. I originally spoke to the owner who explained how everything would work. He was professional and courteous on the phone with understating my needs and just in general with creating the appointment. The technician was on time. He was extremely knowledgeable and performed precision work. He took the time to have a conversation with my son and I while performing the work regarding his work and he even shared his background info with us while listening to our story too. I had a 50 year old upright piano that had been unplayed for 30 plus years, and badly out of tune. We are redoing our basement and had a 1800 got junk truck come to do a clean out, and my husband had the piano on the list of things to go. But I could not just junk it.. and was hoping that I could find out if it still had any life in it, and if it was able to be tuned. We inherited a Baldwin piano and we don't know much about it at all--its age, what kind of play it had, etc. and we felt we were in very good hands with Trevin as he set to work and explained the tuning process. After he tuned, he played a few bars of particularly rollicking music to check the keys and the piano sounded much better than we've ever heard it. He was also friendly and clear as he described a few small issues on the horizon that we could choose to address immediately or save for the next appointment. The tuner that I used to use was not available, so I decided to take a chance an give Arolla a try. My piano hasn't been tuned for 2 years but managed to NOT need a pitch raise. (Stayed at 440). But it was sounding pretty nasty anyway. Julie came to the rescue, on time and practically to the second. She got right to work and in less than 2 hours had this piano singing like the first day I got it. I am a songwriter, music teacher and I give them my highest recommendation. Piano sounds great. I rented a pretty beat up piano from the venue I had booked for my theater company's first show. It was badly in need of a tuning and some attention to sticky keys, so I contacted Orpheus. At first I booked an appointment with their Silver Level tech, but it turned out that there was a mix-up in scheduling and he was unavailable. Isaac came in his place and gave me Gold Level service at the silver price because of the mix-up. He did excellent work on the piano and it is playing beautifully for our show. Being a musician with a long history in the area, I've tried a few different services, and can honestly say there is no equal to Orpheus and the magic they work. Dave came and tuned my piano this week and I couldn't be happier with the end result. Also, he was on time, swift but thorough, and highly professional. My piano is an old clunker and one of the strings wound up breaking during the tuning, but Dave was willing to take the broken string in and give an estimate of what it would take to custom order a new one and have it replaced next time.
