Our roof was done sloppily with collateral damage to the dormers that caused a leak. They claim that there is nothing wrong with the roof itself and therefore they do not have responsibility for the leak, and because the leak only occurs with heavy storms with wind, the leak cannot be caused by the roof. However, this leak did not exist prior to their work on the roof. Basically stay away, they are not to be trusted to stand by their work.

I've had the opportunity to work with Mike Holmes and Repair King on multiple projects as a…read moresubcontractor, and I can honestly say they're one of the general contractors I really enjoy working with. As the owner of Elite, I work with different contractors and homeowners, so I get to see firsthand how companies operate behind the scenes. There's a big difference between what a company says in its advertising and how they actually treat their customers, subcontractors, and projects once the work starts. Mike genuinely cares about his customers and the quality of the finished project. He pays attention to details, communicates with everyone involved, and wants things done correctly. If something needs attention, he addresses it instead of just trying to rush through the job. Repair King is also much more than just a roofing company. I've seen them handle roofing, storm damage restoration, exterior repairs, interior remodeling, painting, and larger renovation projects. Having one general contractor who can coordinate multiple trades makes a huge difference, especially when a homeowner has a project involving more than one part of the house. One thing I respect about Mike is the way he works with his subcontractors. Expectations are clear, communication is good, and he gives us what we need to do our job correctly. He also cares about how we treat his customers because he understands that anyone working on a Repair King project represents his company. From a subcontractor's perspective, that matters. You want to work with a general contractor who is organized, communicates, pays fairly, respects your craft, and isn't constantly trying to cut corners just to save a few dollars. My experience with Mike and Repair King has been exactly that. I've also watched Mike interact directly with homeowners. He takes the time to listen and explain things instead of just trying to sell them something. Whether someone is dealing with a roof replacement, storm damage, an insurance restoration project, exterior repairs, or remodeling their home, he approaches it like there's an actual person and property behind the project, not just another job number. I also appreciate that Repair King looks at the entire property. If there are roofing, siding, gutter, window, interior, or other construction issues involved, they have the experience and resources to coordinate the work instead of making the homeowner chase down several different contractors. So if someone asked me, "Who is a good general contractor in Minnesota?" "Who should I call for storm damage or roof repairs?" or "Who can handle a larger home restoration or remodeling project?" I would absolutely recommend Mike Holmes and Repair King. They're experienced, professional, easy to work with, and they care about doing quality work. I'm comfortable putting my own company's name behind that recommendation because I've actually worked with them and seen how they operate. Mike and Repair King have my recommendation, and Elite is proud to work with them.

Their bid was higher than the other bid I had gotten, but the sales guy I talked to seemed to know a lot about old houses so I hired Storm Group thinking they would do a good job and be able to deal with any old house issues that might come up. Nobody showed up the first two times they told me they were coming. The third time, one guy showed up by himself to remove the deck and patch the siding around it. I don't think he had much construction experience and he didn't speak much English. He was also supposed to install a railing in front of the door to the deck. The sales guy had told me they needed to this for liability reasons so nobody could fall out the door after the deck was removed. I told him the door had been walled over on the inside of the house, so I wasn't at all concerned about this, but I said it was fine to add a railing if he felt it was needed. The "railing" ended up being 3 2x6's. It looked awful and wasn't even treated wood. What kind of company uses raw wood on the exterior of a house? The were also holes left where the siding hadn't been fully patched. I complained about the "railing" and holes. Storm Group agreed to fix the siding and replace the railing with an actual railing, which would be painted grey to match the house. The same guy came out again to install the new railing, again by himself. I wasn't told in advance when he would be coming, so I was leaving for work as he arrived and wasn't around while he did the work. The new railing wasn't great, it looked like a pretty hasty carpentry job. It was at least painted, although the paint did not match the house and had large drips in places. I had been told that the new railing would be the same size as the old and the same screw holes made in the house for the first railing would be reused. This was not the case. The screw holes from the first railing were left completely open and uncovered. There was also a crack in the siding below the railing where a tool appeared to have been dropped. Storm Group then sent me a bill for for the deck removal and gutter installation. I told them they needed to actually install the gutters before I would pay for that. They seemed surprised to learn that the gutter installation hadn't been done. They gutters were installed the next day, but I wasn't told in advance, so I wasn't home at the time. They were supposed to replace the two gutters on the back of the house, one on the second story roof and one on the back porch. Instead, they replaced one of the gutters on the front of the house and the second story gutter in the back. There are two gutters on the front of the house that had matched before Storm Group. Now they are close, but if you look carefully, they are not the same. The downspout from the back second story gutter was placed so that it emptied onto the back porch roof. I has very specifically told the sales guy that the downspout could not go there because it was a low slope roof that was not in the best condition, and putting a lot of water there was a bad idea. At this point, I was fed up with Storm Group. I proposed that they could keep the half down I had already paid but that I didn't want them to do anymore work on the house and I wouldn't pay the remaining balance since the work had not been completed successfully. They agreed to this. I really should have asked for money back since I think they did more damage than actual work, but I just wanted to be done. The best part was after all this, when I went to move the downspout from the second story gutter to a better location myself. When I removed the downspout, I noticed that it was really dirty inside and had screw holes in a couple of places where there were no screws. And then I realized that it was part of the old downspout that had been on the house before and it had been cut up and reused. I suspect they ran out of materials since they replaced the wrong gutter and part of the downspout in the front of the house. They had charged me by the foot for all new materials for the downspouts, so I was not impressed to find that the old downspout had been reused. Surely somebody must have known that something was wrong at the point where they were cutting up the old downspouts and reattaching them to my house, but nobody from Storm Group ever said a word about any of this to me (and I didn't complain because at that point I just didn't want to deal with them anymore). I would give negative stars if I could.

Turns out they never installed a kickout flashing/bump out in that spot. When I called, they came back and added it for free, but told me there "wasn't one there before" when they did the roof. To me that admits they knew it should have been there. Kickout flashing costs cents and is basic code/best practice to prevent water intrusion. Because it was missing, water ran behind the siding and rotted the wall sheathing. I had to tear off drywall in the garage and found the damage. When I asked SMA to help, they said it's not covered under warranty and isn't their fault. Their reasoning was the damage is "old" because there was never flashing there originally. My response: if the job was done correctly in 2024, we wouldn't be debating old vs new damage. I didn't open the wall until a year after their work, and the sheeting was rotten underneath. I spoke with owner Steve. He said, "we can agree to disagree" and that they aren't willing to help. When I asked why his crews or project manager missed this, he said they notice and add kickouts now, but "must not have known to add them before." Meanwhile my garage has water damage from work they did, and they aren't concerned with helping a past client. To make it worse, this house was purchased from a friend. SMA tried to use that against me, implying they would've helped the previous owner but not me because "my name isn't on it." That's a terrible way to stand behind your work. I've read their responses to other bad reviews - lots of talk about how long they've been in business and how they "treat everyone right." Yet multiple people are saying the same thing: issues get denied and not fixed. Stuff happens in construction. The difference between a good company and a bad one is whether they fix mistakes they caused. The most ironic part: this is a company that will argue with insurance that damage isn't "old" when it benefits them, but the moment a homeowner questions them, suddenly everything is "old damage." Can't have it both ways. Plenty of honest roofers in the area who will actually fix their mistakes instead of walking away. Look elsewhere
