My wife and I, along with her sister took the Armed2Defend Concealed Carry Class in December 2017. Our general consensus on the class is that it meets the state's requirements to obtain your concealed carry license, but doesn't really prepare a person to actually conceal and carry a firearm. We haven't taken other concealed carry classes to compare against, but here are our personal pros/cons of the program in no particular order:
Pros:
* Registering is easy and comfortable. They have several registration options, a nice website, and are very quick to respond to any questions. The instructor sends a detailed information sheet before the class so you know what to expect.
* Excellent staff. Everyone I talked to was friendly, knowledgeable, and willing to help. There were plenty of staff members to help as well. We had over 60 people in the class and you never had to wait to find someone to talk to. Presenters were comfortable speaking and knew the material without reading the slides. The 6 hours of classroom time went by very quick.
* Organization. Paperwork and presentations were prepared in advance. There was no fumbling around trying to find things or switch presentations. They also had a general schedule they more or less stuck to. The facilities were excellent
* Safety focused. Staff stressed safety rules to an extreme level which I appreciated. I never felt like our safety was compromised.
* Ken Hanson presentation. I didn't care one way or the other about having an attorney speak at the class before coming, but afterwards we all agreed that Ken Hanson's 1-hour presentation was our favorite part of the class. Very informational and extremely entertaining.
* 2-hour shooting portion. I took the intermediate shooting class which I found to be helpful. I've been shooting my whole life, but have never practiced getting shots off quickly while under stress. I thought Mr. Sweeney did an excellent job. You had the option of doing additional shooting after your initial 50 rounds.
Cons:
* Questionable pricing. The pricing for the class was different depending on where/how you registered. Some places listed $95, others were $90, and one was $75 plus there are coupons and cards and probably other things I missed. I don't think the owner is out to make a killing on the class but the pricing scheme made it seem more shady/scammy.
* Distractions. The owner's young children and pets were in the classroom area. They were running about and interrupted a few times. We didn't mind as we also have small children, but I think it could be distracting for some people.
* Class material. I thought we spent too much time on the parts of a pistol as well as the differences between single-action, double-action, and semi-automatic. I think this could be summarized and still be effective. We never talked about concealment options or safely drawing from a holster which I feel are crucial for concealed carry. My wife and her sister both commented on how they still aren't sure how to carry a gun.
* 2-hour shooting portion. My wife and her sister took the beginner shooting portion. They hoped the instructors would critique them on their stance, grip, etc. but didn't get that. They've been around guns and were on target, so the instructor basically left them alone to help others.
* Lunch. We packed our lunch and were glad we did. They ordered several pizzas for everyone who paid for a lunch. It sat in the back of the room for 45 minutes before they served it and it was just pizza. It's not what I expected when they talked about a buffet.
Overall, it was a good class, but expect to do a lot of research on your own (which I think you should anyway) or take additional classes before carrying concealed firearms. read more
