They are _much_ better at football. It really did get me to where I am today despite the recent bad press. For the most part, colleges give me a tad bit of anxiety. Visiting UC Davis recently, I felt like I forgot to write a paper, or that I need to go to class, or that I was missing valuable drinking time before class. Remembering what year it was and that I was a big boy now eased these pains, but reassured me that I wasn't going to get my Master's anytime soon. In any case, here are the things I miss from going to school here: TONY'S : This was a locals bar, but also my favorite. Warm Killian's Irish Red and Coors Light on tap just added to the experience of classic rock music and drunk townies. You will likely see me wear a T-Shirt advertising this bar. THE GREEN : Just a nice patch of grassy land underneath enormous trees. I would often go here while I cut class on very nice spring days. JEFF' HILL : Short for Jefferson Hill that is now closed due to bad road conditions (most of the uptown is paved in brick. The kind that would trip the unsuspecting pedestrian and cause their drunk friends to laugh incessantly). There were many a sledding on cafeteria trays here during snow storms. RTV BUILDING : This is where I got my Communication Systems Management degree. In the bowels of this building, I was at class almost all week. Though I would think this area would bring me anxiety, this is where I first realized that I was finally _getting_ college. COURT STREET : The main street of the small University (population 30,000, which was also about the number of students who in attendance). Though it's gotten a bit commercialized in the past few years, I will always remember the many strolls down the street looking for a place to eat or imbibe alcohol. I am sure I will keep adding to this list as I remember more things that I miss. If you have a chance, visit this small campus. I know I will be for years to come.

Came here on a weekday to celebrate my husband's birthday. The roads were winding on the way so I…read moredid get a little motion sick. Off the main road was a sign that let us know we were in the right place. There was plenty of parking next to their big barn. We were told to check in at the office and then go back to the stables. We were offered helmets if we wanted but it was not a requirement. I opted to wear one while my husband did not. We were part of a group with 4 other people. Our lead was very nice and funny, and she quickly gave instructions. She had us sit on the horses and she adjusted our feet into the stirrups. My horse snacked a lot and it was difficult to move them away from various plants. However, overall all of the horses were well behaved and listened. We did the trail that was 2 hours. I've ridden horses before, but 2 hours was a lot. If you are not experienced or used to sitting in a horse I would suggest the 1 hour trail ride. We saw a cool tunnel but we essentially went through it and then turned around and went back. We had a good time and my husband loved it. I would just be warned on which trail ride you use based on your experience

I am a big fan of history. I like reading about it. I like to view videos and also listen to…read morepeople talk about it. So when I knew I was going to vein this area. I decided to find a place to visit. And Fort Boreman popped up. So I came here. It was awesome to visit. But I wish I didn't visit in winter. Because the view from the top of the hill was slightly obstructed by the snow and fog. But I still enjoyed myself. And read all the signs. I was happy to take the small trail around the fort. I do wish when the civil war ended that they didn't tear everything dow. But that's ok. I was able to use my mind and pretend. And it was awesome.

I had long heard about Buffington Island, but don't get down this way much. When I was driving to…read moreNorth Carolina I noticed it was only a few miles off my route, so I had to swing by. The only Civil War battlefield in Ohio- how could I pass that up? It is small, and probably not of much interest unless you are a real history buff, in which case it is fascinating. There is a small park with plenty of parking, an Indian mound, and a small outbuilding with bathrooms. A few historical markers and a small pavilion with display panels round out the amenities. The story is fascinating: John Morgan, later imprisoned in the old State Pen in Columbus, was a Confederate raider who attacked all along the Ohio River. This was the only major battle, and it eventually led to his capture. The displays explain the background, battle, and aftermath. It's quiet and isolated, and pretty cool. Maybe not worth a special trip unless you are a Civil War buff, but if you live in the area or are traveling nearby, definitely worth a visit.

Wellworks is a workout haven in a college town where the primary workout facililty, Ping Center, is…read moredominated by undergraduates. It is modest but functional with 4 treadmills, loads of ellipticals, 2 rowing machines, and one spin bike traditional and a couple other derivatives. Full free weights collection and 2 large racks for squats etc. What we used to call Nautilus machines are there for the exercises you want plus a universal with 2 sets of weights. What it doesn't have is a lot of space especially for stretching or doing exercises on mats. There are two wood floor workout rooms down the hall where classes are regularly held. Best attended is movement for older adults and lots more. My favorite is Bill's outdoor class in warmer months held on The Ridges. Winter time he moves inside for extra spin options. Real advantage is that it is a judgement free zone with lots of folks at very different levels. They have options for personal trainers who are upper level undergrads or PT grad students for $30 a session. I've had a fantastic experience most recently with Sam who is super well informed, adjusts the workouts to my strengths and maladies that pop up, and for me is encouraging but not gung ho over the top. The gym is mostly devoid of the stereotypical gym bros with loud grunts and show off sets. Really only 2 regulars feel the need to share their exertion with you. Wellworks has definitely undergone some big changes in the last few months and many of us were worried it would be a budget cut victim. Fortunately so far it has not become one even if there are far fewer professional staff working there. I will say that cutting the incentive program where 100 visits in a year earned you a new membership has led to fewer visits on my part. It was just something that gave you the extra push to get there. They would be wise to reinstate some version of it even if the reward so to speak is much smaller - qualify for a drawing of 2 or 3 free memberships at 100 visits or even just the damn t-shirt they gave away to those who hit 100. The incentive was a positive behavioral intervention as much as a financial benefit and if the university goal is in part having a healthier (and therefore less costly and more productive) workforce then they have undercut that goal with this recent cost cutting step.

The WellWorks fitness center is located on the Athens campus in Grover Center, so it is convenient for members of the Ohio University community who want a place to work out. The staff are friendly, and there is often a staff member available on the exercise floor to show how to use machines and to assist in other ways. The facility's hours from early morning through evening will accommodate the schedule of anyone except night owl fitness enthusiasts. The cost of membership is low. I wrote a review when I first started at WellWorks a year ago. This is an updated version that reflects improvements since then. It is commendable that they try to provide as many options in the small space available, but it makes the room overcrowded with equipment and claustrophobic except during lowest times of the day, so leave your sense of personal space outside. The cardio equipment seems to be up-to-date and maintained, and the some of the weight machines the been updated over the past year. The room's climate control and ventilation are not ideal. Janitorial services are spotty (for example, paper towel dispensers will be empty for days before being refilled). When I first signed up a year ago, not all the WellWorks staff understood how the membership costs and billing work. I wanted to try out the facility during the month before classes started, so I purchased what I thought was a membership that would last through the first day of classes. Six days later, I was told I needed to pay for an additional month. It falls on the customer to detect when the WellWorks staff is telling you something wrong, so caveat emptor. The center got a new director last summer, so the training and knowledge of the staff may be better now.
