The son then proceeded to change the sedation treatment after I had already signed the forms and was hooked up to EKG and oxygen. I caught the switch before the operation went through and after Dr Eckert's son pushed back on me and I decided to walk out of their office. I've since been to another oral surgeon and that dentist said that only one wisdom tooth needed to come out and the other three had complications due to their proximity to facial nerves, that if damaged could cause facial paralysis. None of this information was given to me at my consultation with Dr. Eckert and I went in expecting all four teeth removed. What Dr. Eckert did was careless, unprofessional and unethical. I'm glad the procedure did not go through otherwise the son could have caused long term damage had he not had the experience to do the complicated procedure on the upper wisdom teeth.

While I came in fully wise (4 wisdom teeth), I left with only half of the smart chompers as expected. The entire experience was a single visit-intake, X-rays, evaluation, and dual extraction. They provided me with appropriate amounts of anesthetic and I really didn't feel anything. I didn't like the sounds (other than my choice of calming music); that's appropriate. The actual procedure was about 5 minutes long and no follow up is anticipated be needed there. A project well done. The healing process isn't too bad, either.

I actually cried once I returned home. I came in looking for a consult on a single wisdom tooth that has been bothering me. Dr. Eckert came in and immediately started pushing for me to get all 4 out: that's not what I came in prepared to do, so I was trying to ask questions about why I would need all 4 out when only one was bothering me. One of his quips when I asked why I would need all 4 was "only 10% of people get to keep all 4 of their wisdom teeth"???? okay?? how many people have 1 out, 2 out, etc? I feel that if I'm signing up for a surgery I'm allowed to ask as many questions as I want, but at a certain point Dr. Eckert said "I'm sensing some hesitancy and honestly, I don't know why." Maybe for a dentist the procedure feels mundane, but again, I'm allowed to be hesitant! I'm allowed to ask questions! And I shouldn't be shamed or gaslight into thinking I'm being ridiculous for asking questions! Another thing I kept asking was if I could just do the 1 or maybe the bottoms, as I see no reason to take out the tops (they haven't even started growing in yet). Dr. Eckert just kept saying "I don't know why you would do just 1 right now, because then you'll have to come in 3 more times to get each one out" what a ridiculous comment to even come out of his mouth. Of course I don't want to come in 4 times to take each out 1-by-1. That's not what I'm asking. I'm asking if I can tackle only the ones that look bothersome now, and reassess with the others later in life. They're my teeth, I'm allowed to decide which ones I want taken out!! Listen, I understand what his perspective is. He thinks all 4 will eventually start to bother me. Whether he's right about that is the subject of intense debate. The surgery is very invasive and having all 4 out will make the healing process more difficult, so I was hoping to avoid taking some out if they weren't bothering me right now. If 10 years from now they do start to bother me, great, fine. I'll take them out. There was no room for this perspective in that office, I'll tell you that! Finally, a note on the front desk and assistants, who were no better. There was a debate about whether to do full anesthesia or laughing gas. An assistant told me laughing gas wouldn't be covered by insurance. When I was checking out, I asked if I could please get a quote for both the full anesthesia cost and the laughing gas cost so that I could determine which one works better for my budget. They took SO MUCH offense to this request (even though it's literally my money and I'm allowed to ask how much the procedure will cost), and never gave me the second quote. When they finally got back to me about a cost it was for all 4 teeth (how many times did I tell them I didn't want all 4 out!!) and it was completely unspecified whether they had quoted me for full anesthesia or laughing gas. I definitely did not get 2 quotes. I cannot stress how entirely unprofessional my entire experience was. I sincerely hope dealing with the younger Mr. Eckert is a more pleasant experience. Please avoid this practice at all costs, they did not convey a respect for the patient like I would have expected, they just wanted to get as much money out of me as possible.

Let me first say that I had no idea there could be such disparities in quality when we're talking…read moreabout kids' braces. I had originally taken my kids to the place nearest us (we live in a town neighboring Arlington, a town where you would assume businesses are all fairly high quality), figuring braces were braces. I **had** previously had a new retainer made for myself at the nearby place and it **did** seem to be of poor quality - brittle, thin plastic that cracked just over 2 years in - but I wasn't sure if retainers had changed a lot over the decades or what. When my son finished treatment and received his (brittle) retainer I started poking around to see what had happened to retainers since the 90s and whether there were other options. I was told that amongst the clear plastic ones, there IS a quality difference; nicer ones are thicker and softer. I was also told that I could specifically request a "Hawley" retainer (the ones with a wire over the front of your teeth) at the local place, pay a little more, and it would last forever. This actually frustrated me because I had not been offered a Hawley retainer at the local place, and neither had my son. And when my brittle plastic retainer had cracked 2 years in, they made me redo my molds ($$$$$) even though I'd kept my molds and called them right away. Meanwhile my daughter did not feel confident about the treatment she was receiving at the local place; we were nearing the end of her braces; the next step was removal and retainer. She had reported concerns throughout the process and repeatedly asked me if she could get a 2nd opinion. Between this and the retainer situation, I decided I needed to at least see if there was anything better out there. From the very first contact, Arlington Orthodontics was amazing. The reception staff were friendly, warm, professional, and courteous. The office has plentiful parking in the back, which makes a difference when you're a busy parent making multiple trips, and the interior was bright, clean, and thoughtfully decorated for fall and Halloween. On assessing my daughter Dr. Lindgren stated that he would have her in a few more times to bring her bottom teeth more forward. He also said she had this whole other wire/chain thing over her teeth that was not necessary in her case and would have been trapping food. By the time I left the first visit I had determined to switch her care, even though I'd already paid in full at the local place, and to have new retainers made for myself and my son. After her first visit, my daughter reported Arlington Orthodontics was SO much better. She said the assistant was much more gentle and "actually explained" everything being done. Her braces also LOOKED so much better after that excess chain was removed. And as for my retainer, not only can I tell it's much higher quality and won't be prone to cracking, but it is also SO much easier to get on and off. IMO, anything you do or use every day is worth investing in; the stress of worrying that the other one would crack each time I took it in and out was not a great way to start and end each day. As if all that weren't reason enough, the assistant at Arlington Orthodontics told me that they THEY would keep my molds (not me, yay, I lose stuff) and that if **ever** my retainer broke or got lost, as long as I called within a reasonable time, they could have a new retainer made without making new molds. AMAZING!!!!!!!! Just being honest the local place almost seems like a racket in retrospect - give everyone poor quality retainers, don't even mention the Hawley option, and charge for new molds if it's been over 2 years, which is the life expectancy of those lower-end retainers. In summary, this place is everything you'd want in an orthodontic office: Friendly, professional staff, knowledgable, highly competent orthodontist and assistants, easy parking, and a well-lit, well-decorated space. Well worth the drive from neighboring towns and worth every extra penny we had to pay due to having already started treatment elsewhere.

By this I mean they send me reminders and calls about upcoming appointments (this is simple but helpful), they give me progress reports on my dental care and check in about past problems or discussions and they deal with people well on a personal level. I have had dental extractions performed by three highly renowned oral surgeons in three different cities: DC, San Francisco, and now Boston, and this is the first time of all those procedures that I was not in significant pain beyond two days afterward. Dr. Lucca is extraordinary. Not only does he have impeccable bedside manner but his kindness, grace, and compassion, especially during what was an emergency procedure for me were extraordinary. His surgical expertise is on another high level caliber entirely. I stopped taking pain medication on day two, and by day three I was in minimal pain. Given my past experiences, I was honestly so shocked that I scheduled a follow-up office visit just to make sure nothing had gone wrong because I *wasn't* in pain anymore. How oxymoronic is that? Dr. Lucca's precision that I could observe during my surgery (this was a local anesthesia surgery), his reassuring explanations, him answering my innumerable questions, and his calm demeanor completely changed what I expected from oral surgery. I just want to share my negative experience with this office and warn other possible clients. They…read moretold me that I have to pay upfront and that they bill my insurance afterwards and then I get reimbursed by the insurance. The consultation was billed to my dental insurance and I received a reimbursement (without the co-payment amount). Next I had to get a procedure. I was told the same thing. First I pay upfront, then they bill my health insurance, which will reimburse me. Yes, they may have said they are out of network but they did not tell me to call my insurance first to approve the procedure. When time past by and I did not get the reimbursement I checked with my health insurance and the claim was denied because it was not pre-aproved. Shouldn't they have told me I should call my insurance ahead of the procedure? Don't they deal with insurance providers all the time and should know of the steps? Or were they concerned the claim was going to be rejected and they did not want my business to go somewhere else where it was covered? Hum.... They make you sign a lot of legal papers that they say explains everything. By the way, after the procedure the doctor did not fix my problem and told me I could go see another doctor.

However, the staff member then took the cash to a back room for another individual to recount it. When he returned, he charged my card an additional amount that was not previously discussed or authorized. This appeared to be due to a mistake on their end, but I was not informed beforehand, nor was my consent obtained before the extra charge was processed. I am very concerned about the lack of communication and authorization regarding this transaction. Additionally, the staff member repeatedly spoke over me, even after I calmly asked several times to be allowed to finish my statements. This made communication difficult and added to the overall frustration of the situation. At no point did he acknowledge the interruptions or offer an apology, which felt dismissive and unprofessional. There were also issues with the prescription. It was initially sent to the wrong pharmacy, and when I called to have it redirected, I was told this could not be done because the original pharmacy had already packaged the medication. After speaking with multiple staff members and spending approximately three hours trying to resolve the issue, the prescription was eventually sent to the correct pharmacy. While the surgeon performed excellent work, the administrative and front office experience was frustrating, disorganized, and unprofessional. Due to these issues, I would not choose to use this practice again.
