I have been a patient at Pleasant St. Dental for over a decade. I recently met Dr. Laura Simon, who took over Dr. Richardson's practice. When I called for a problem, she made time for me immediately, presented the issue and treatment options to me in a balanced way, and listened carefully to my concerns. I decided (with her advice) to take a proactive approach and have a crown put in to replace a filling in a tooth with multiple cracks. Dr. Simon was able to fit me in for the crown in less than a week, and on the day of the procedure she was extremely patient with my anxiety and concerns about possible procedural pain. She made sure I had plenty of numbing and amazingly the entire procedure was painless! I would highly recommend Dr. Simon and this practice. read more

Dr Richardson is lovely. However, she over diagnoses cavities (as many MA dentists seem to) and charges a fair amount for each service. I chose her because she was listed as a preferred provider with my crappy dental insurance. Not sure how that list came about because the insurance coverage was minimal. Granted, I have crappy dental insurance, but I should not be getting $400 bills - I didn't have any major procedures or anything. Additionally, since I have such crappy insurance AND Dr Richardson charges more than possibly necessary, it would be good practice to say (before shooting me up with Novocaine), how much things are likely to cost. However, had I had a better experience with reception staff, I may have been inclined to add a star. They are sickeningly sweet until there is an issue and then they become defensive. Also, indirect and passive aggressive. I kept calling to find out what was going on with my stupidly high bill and instead of returning calls, I kept getting minimally altered bills in the mail (to the wrong address, even after I provided the right address at least twice). Overall, nice person. Average care. Poor practice management. read more

I'm pretty much seconding everything Hannah M. said in her review. The few times I met Dr. Richardson, she seemed very nice and very knowledgeable. The several cleanings I had were also good, i.e. nothing spectacular but adequate. However, my last run-in with the reception desk has helped me decide never to go there again. I called to reschedule my appointment a full week before it was going to happen and when I asked if they had any other openings coming up within the next month, the rude receptionist quickly said "no." There was absolutely no hesitation/delay when she said it and she didn't even offer to take a look at the next "opening" or take my information in case there was a cancellation. Suffice to say the call ended abruptly after that and I never heard from them again. Perhaps this receptionist was having a bad day but, with the huge amount of dentists available in the area, Pleasant Street Dental should be treating their clients with kid gloves. They're certainly not going to win them over with the Soup Nazi style of customer service. read more

I was worried I'd get scolded/lectured for the state of my teeth and general neglect, but that was not the case AT ALL here. They were all super-cool, immediately put me at ease. Dr. Richardson has been one of my best, if not my absolute best, dental experiences I ever had. After three years of some of the worst dental insurance ever and refusing to visit a chain dentist that exists only in abandoned strip malls (I'm looking at you, Gentle Dental and Aspen), I finally stumbled across Dr. Richardson thanks to Yelp. I managed to snag a great early morning appointment just two weeks after the day I called, and they were very thorough and kind over the phone. They sent all my paperwork electronically and I had everything ready for them before I got there. My dental hygienist (whose name I never caught, but we'll call her Pretty Blonde) was extremely knowledgeable and helpful the entire time, explaining all the tools they use and what they indicate. They had this super bad-ass power washer thing for your teeth, which is considerably more gentle than the needles and probes usually associated with a cleaning. I had three years of grime built up, and after she was done my teeth looked freaking amazing. The entire time she was constantly changing her gloves and all the tools were wrapped in plastic. A hygienic hygienist? HELL YES. Afterward, Dr. Richardson came in, and you can tell this lady loves her work. She remarked that I have "beautiful molars" (at a time that she had her fingers stuffed in my mouth, so I gurgled out a "fank oo" in response) and very clearly went over everything going on in my goofy mouth - though she, again, told me what wonderful I teeth I have for someone that never had braces. Lady, you know the only way into my heart outside of food is telling me how great my face is. Bless your heart. I DID get diagnosed with a cavity, but it was obvious after three years of general mistreatment. All in all, it was a lovely, modern office with great tools and a friendly staff, which I definitely appreciated at 8 in the morning. read more

First time I had seen Dr. Richardson was at the suggestion of a sweet co-worker that knew of my irrational fear of the dentist. I hadn't been to a dentist in so many years I'm embarrassed to say here. I would cry just talking about going to the dentist. Dr. Richardson is calm, kind, polite and professional. I saw Dr Richardson several years ago and I was impressed. She really does seem to care and she spends the time necessary to go over what is wrong and how to fix it. The staff was super sweet. I was nervous because I had never had a cavity before but the staff went out of their way to be so helpful and make me feel more comfortable. I could give them the highest recommendation and feel very confident in doing so. I also took my small son to see her for his cleaning and again it was a comfortable and pleasant experience. I was expecting a difficult time with him being a new experience but he responded very well to her caring nature and calming techniques to get him to relax. read more

Dr. Richardson is such a pro. I have some complicated issues - overlapping wisdom teeth causing cavities on the side of molars, impacted wisdom teeth, grinding, gum recession, etc. I hate the bad news I get at the dentist. She's always hyper-aware of pain and incredibly sensitive and caring. Every hygienist I've had has been worthy of this practice. My only minor minor complaint is that I haven't had the same hygienist more than twice, and I do think that they get to know a patient's quirks. Then again I only go once every six months and turnover is a real thing. Here's hoping I'll be having the current one a few more times at least. read more

It has been 6 years since my last Yelp review of Pleasant Street Dental, but not much has changed. I'm still a very happy patient of the practice, even after seeing one of the 'associate' dentists that Dr. Richardson was using. Basically here's the dilly: - Still an up-to-date office with great technology that makes things easier on you as the patient (x-ray machine, water pic cleaner, etc) - Hygienist and dentist both listen to your feedback, both about any pain level and questions about treatment - I don't think they over-diagnose at all; in fact, I have had to request treatment at times. They also will show you on the monitor what they are seeing so you understand why you need treatment. - Flexible office hours - I love the early morning appointments! - Friendly staff - Reasonable prices - unlike Hannah M., I have found Dr. Richardson's prices even with my co-pay to be lower than my co-workers' and friends' experiences with other dentists, especially with things like night guards that aren't covered by dental insurance or crowns, which are only partially covered. I know she makes it a point to try to keep those costs low for her patients. My only negative is in regards to my grinding problem. Back in 2003, I mentioned I thought I was grinding, but Dr. R didn't see evidence in my teeth so I didn't get a night guard. Let me tell you, I was certainly grinding! Lesson to self: Be more assertive when discussing my own body/health. However, on the other side of things, when the good dentist did see evidence of grinding in my teeth even after I started religiously wearing a night guard, I wish she had been pushier about the whole "unconscious day grinding/clenching" concept, and had more recommendations about how to prevent that behavior so I stopped grinding through my crown. I was in denial about my day grinding issues. The grinding thing is pretty minor. I am very happy with my dental care at Pleasant St Dental and will continue going there and recommending them to everyone. (And everyone I've referred has been very happy!) read more

I went to Pleasant St. Dental on the recommendation of a friend (who incidentally, used to work there. Having moved to Boston from Upstate NY, this is undoubtedly the best dentist I have ever been to. Courteous staff, totally current equipment, and Dr. Richardson is so nice and patient! I had my first fillings done here (3, at age 27!) and she was so helpful in explaining the procedure and even in giving me a couple of moments to calm down my freak-out before she gave me the Novocaine injection. Anyone who knows me knows I hate dentists. I can't tell you how many times I have been recommended for expensive and painful procedures that I didn't need, or had cavities filled that weren't even cavities (and even had them filled without any local anesthesia). The list goes on and on. Dr. Richardson is nothing like those dentists. She typically uses the "watch and wait" approach. When something does need to be done beyond a regular cleaning, she shows you proof and explains her rationale pointing to the pictures of your own teeth. She's easy to talk to, and very skilled. When I had a cavity filled by her, it was totally painless and my bite remained perfect. She has totally given me confidence again in dentists. I won't go anywhere else and have even recommended several friends and coworkers to her business. read more

My fiance is a dental hygienist and when I told her about my visit she commented how up to date they are using all of the modern equipment and how thorough they were in my routine cleaning. I found Dr. Richardson thanks to a good review I read on Yelp, and because of the continued amazing service I finally decided to sign up and do my own review. I moved to Cambridge last summer and didn't bother finding my new dentist yet, when on New Year's Eve I was forced into the challenge. I have had the same wonderful dentist (in Phoenix, AZ) for about 25 years. It was dauting considering finding someone new. However, the ice and champagne on New Year's were not a good combination for me (lacking grace to begin with) and I fell flat on my face, destroying a good portion of 3 of my front teeth. I spent New Year's day seaching the internet for a close, friendly dentist, and I am surprised at how fortunate I was. I called the next day promptly in the morning, expecting to make a far off appointment and be forced to face the world without my teeth. But she scheduled me for that morning! Again I expected to have a consultation and have to return for my teeth, but the Dr. fixed me immediately! I was so surprised, it took me a minute to figure out she was actually proceeding with the repair. And she did beautiful work too. Dr. Richardson has also been generous in fixing the color of my new teeth and also fixing an old painful filling. She is so quick and efficient, and very straightforward. The staff are also incredible, very knowledgable and personable. The cleanings are painless and pleasant, and the hygenist chooses to avoid the water spray and loud and annoying suction tube, which makes the experience a lot less intense. I appreciate that the office is close, but I would definitely make the drive from all over to continue to see her. Highly recommended! read more

I had delayed going to the dentist because it had been shamefully long since I had made time for an appointment. In reality, I had a sensitive tooth and knew that my soda dependence in grad school had done me in. I met with Dr. Richardson due to reading the Yelp reviews. I can honestly say I wish I had known about her sooner. Her entire staff has been very polite and warm and Dr. Richardson has been absolutely a pleasure to work with. She could've made me feel horrible for neglecting my teeth for as long as I did, but she never once made me feel bad. Her office seems to use the latest technologies (seeing the pictures of my teeth was pretty cool) and if you could call a cleaning gentle, this would be it. Everyone was great at explaining what they were doing, and even praised me on a follow up appointment when they could see I was really making good progress towards my oral health. Sadly, I did have a cavity. Dr. Richardson did an amazing job with that procedure, though. I always feel you can best see how a person is when dealing with others, and even though she had a new hygienist training with her, the positive attitude she displayed with her new assistant made me at ease and made the whole experience as laid back as it could be when drills are involved. I used to loathe the dentist, but I made sure to schedule my 6 month cleaning appointment when I left because I was looking forward to going back (and that is NOT normal for me at all). read more

I was disappointed to find out she was so booked that I couldn't get an appointment for months, but they called the next day saying they had a cancellation and could get me in right away. This was an amazing trip to the dentist. I am not usually one to put amazing and dentist in the same sentence, but I really enjoyed the whole experience. First was the experience of setting up the appointment. Great. Then, being greeted and very politely welcomed when I got there. Fantastic. Then came the hygienist who was the best I've ever had, and very friendly. Great AND Fantastic. And then Dr. Richardson who was very open and honest with me about my teeth, and their current state. The best dentist I have been to. Our kids like her, too. Good professional approach but with a nice personal touch. Excellent technology; bright, positive space. I completely disagree with the reviewer who says she over-diagnoses cavities; my experience was just the opposite, and she was careful to prioritize the work I needed done and to spread it out over a few years to maximize my insurance benefits. I had an initial evaluation and cleaning with Dr.Richardson and her staff last week ( August 2009). I had an 8am appointment and came a little early to fill out paperwork. I was actually greeted at the door by Dr.Richardson herself. How nice! I was taken in for my exam at 8:10 and really liked the hygienist, Sara. She was very sweet. The exam rooms are spotless, everything is very modern and they use some real cutting edge technology. Dr.Richardson came in and did some really nice explaining of what I should have done.
