I came to see Dr. Abela as I was referred by the staff at my regular dentist-this is who they went to personally. It was a good choice. While I came in fully wise (4 wisdom teeth), I left with only half of the smart chompers as expected. The entire experience was a single visit-intake, X-rays, evaluation, and dual extraction. They provided me with appropriate amounts of anesthetic and I really didn't feel anything. I didn't like the sounds (other than my choice of calming music); that's appropriate. The actual procedure was about 5 minutes long and no follow up is anticipated be needed there. A project well done. The healing process isn't too bad, either. read more

My sister called for help after having pain following dental procedures, since her dentist was not able to solve her issues. One of her doctors referred her to this office, so she called and asked to seen. They asked the name of the dentist, put her on hold then came back and quickly said "We cannot help you". I had a tooth that needed to be extracted. I was given two shots of numbing medicine that only numbed a different part of my mouth than where the tooth was located. I told the doctor and nurse repeatedly that I could feel everything and they continued with the extraction anyway. I would never go back to this office or recommend it. All I got to say is WOW! I have never encountered so many unfriendly staff ( normally you get 1 or 2 out of the batch- but the whole damm office )In the whole first 5 minutes I was there about 6 different woman from the front desk to the medical assistants/hygienist . Not one person greeted me, said hello or said there L name to me threw me a clip board asked about insurance and asked for xrays. I had a hygentist cough in the air with her mask lowered I was horrified that was it I walked right about before seeing the dr. I have the 1 star for the fact they got me in within a weeks time that's the only reason for the 1 star. It's like every single person was mad they were at work or something. I was so surprised by the negative ratings. My experience could not have been better! I had been putting off getting my wisdom teeth removed but I finally went for my consult here. I walked in to make an appointment (I was in the building for another reason), and the front desk staff couldn't have been nicer. They even gave me the option of doing the consult that morning, which I took. 10 minutes later, I had my x-rays done and I was meeting with Dr. Robert who put me immediately at ease. I made my extraction appointment for the next week. The day arrived and I was in and out in less than 40 minutes! I couldn't believe how fast and painless it was. I even got to pick the music in my room. Dr. Robert told me what to expect every step which helped tremendously! Recovery has been a breeze by following their instructions. They gave me laughing gas for 10 minutes that helped me relax..Dr. came in put needle in my arm..I remember nothing after that!!..I've had no pain and just a bit of swelling. Had my top two wisdom teeth extracted today by Dr. Abela in Winchester. When I was in bootcamp a few years ago my bottom teeth were extracted by a dentist that came from the prison system. Let's just say I was awake for all of it and at one point a part of a tooth fell into my throat and I was choking on it and the dentist said I had to swallow it. Fast forward to today with Dr. Abela. I opted to be awake because I like to be in control. He gave me some laughing gas and quickly administered that good numbing needle. That was the most painful part, albeit quick and not horrible. Then he let me listen to some tunes (I wanted some smooth jazz) and I marinated for probably fifteen minutes. After that, he came in and said, "ok this will take about five mins". Sure enough, he must have only spent two and a half mins a side. Great experience and great doctor. I spent less than two minutes in the waiting room by the way! read more

I went here to have two wisdom teeth removed. Overall the experience was fine. Dr. Abela did a great job I think, and the nursing staff was friendly (from what I can recall - they knocked me out with general anesthesia for the procedure). Everything after that has been a terrible experience. Most of the staff in their front office are rude, and inconsiderate. Its been 6 months since the surgery and they have yet to finalize the billing for the procedure. I have spent weeks calling their office, trying to resolve some questions regarding the insurance payments, because I see some conflicting information on my insurance claims, and I always get the run around. Either the person who is in charge of the insurance/billing is not in the office, or she doesn't have all the information with her. After 6 months!!! They charged me $400 upfront for the procedure which wasn't so bad, but the last I spoke someone in the office told me that my account is going to collections for an unpaid bill. They have not even sent me a bill of how much additional I may owe to begin with !!! Abysmal customer service in my opinion. Great doctor and good medical care. I had all four impacted wisdom teeth removed a month ago by Dr. Abela. I'll be the first to admit that I have an extremely low pain tolerance and am a huge baby about any medical procedure. Dr. Abela and his staff were great about reassuring me, even when I started to have a panic attack when they put in the IV for the anesthesia. Turns out that the (relatively benign for most people who aren't freaked out by needles) IV was the worst part of the whole procedure- I had absolutely ZERO pain from the moment I woke up from anesthesia. Like, absolutely no soreness or swelling at ALL. Took the ibuprofen they prescribed but never needed anything stronger even though they did write me a hydrocodone script. I'm not sure what medical miracle Dr. Abela performed to make that happen, but I'm thankful for whatever he did to make my wisdom tooth surgery completely pain-free and as easy as possible! read more

Yes, the waiting room is small, and occasionally you may have to wait longer than expected to be seen, but I believe the expertise and caring by the doctors here are outstanding and well worth any minor inconvenience. I have had extractions, an implant and various other procedures at W.O.S. over the years, and, in addition to his skill, you won't find a nicer more down-to earth and caring person than Dr. Abela. Recently when I became concerned about a possible complication after an extraction, I called to make an appointment. The office person I spoke to asked if I wanted to come in that day, even though it was afternoon on a Friday. I took her up on that, and Dr. Abela, after an already long day, with more than one emergency, treated me and thanked me for coming in! read more

Dr.Abdela and his staff were simply the best. I got all four of my impacted wisdom teeth removed yesterday and the surgery was virtually painless for me. I've had many IV's put into me and I felt nothing. They don't poke at you to try to get it in your arm if they can't find it. They simply put it in my hand and kept moving. These individuals are the most professional medical professionals I have encountered in a while. Also Karen held my hand when I woke up and made sure I was ok when I was waking up. It's now day two and I feel minimal pain without any drugs. This is shocking because I have the lowest pain tolerance. Simply just a great experience. read more

I spent close to 2 hours in the office for a wisdom tooth removal consultation, was left with a general feeling of unease about the whole experience, and was given a quote that would max my dental insurance coverage and have me paying $1500 out of pocket. Went to another place and got my whole consultation done in 30 minutes and a pre-authorization for $260 out of pocket without maxing my dental insurance coverage. read more

The. Absolute. Worst. Waited over 45 minutes in the waiting room just for the consultation. Then waited over 45 minutes in the waiting room for my son to be called for his wisdoms to be extracted, and then he waited another 40 minutes in the chair for the Dr. to come in. The waiting room is small, cramped, hot, doesn't even have a coat rack, and the chairs are extremely cheap and uncomfortable. Normally I wouldn't care about the chairs in a waiting room but they know people spend a lot of time in them, not just waiting for the Dr. but also waiting for the patient to be done. For the amount of money they charge for these procedures (almost $4k for wisdom teeth removal) they need to step up the service and improve the waiting area. Feels like they have no respect for patients' time and are too cheap to get better space or at least buy decent chairs. I do not recommend WOS unless you have hours to waste. read more

My experience was much like the other reviews here. I spent almost 2 hours here, staff barely acknowledged or talked to me, they sat me in an exam room (without even saying, "hey we are about to make you watch a video" so I was pretty confused) to watch an outdated, painfully boring Video on wisdom teeth removal for over 10 minutes. I then waited another 15- 20 minutes after the video ended to see the surgeon, who literally just reiterated everything I just watched. I had a few questions, which the doctor answered with "Let Doctors do what they do best." At the end of the consult I wasn't feeling very confident about my experience, and THEN the Dr. informs me she isn't even going to be the one doing the surgery! They want me to schedule a surgery with a Dr. I didn't even get to meet? Also, like other people have said, the front desk quoted me over $1,000 after typing for a few minutes on a calculator that looked like it had come over on the mayflower, no idea how they came up with that number.. Ended up going with a different recommendation and scheduled my surgery with Advanced Surgical Associates in Tewksbury instead. read more

I was reading the negative review here. It is undeniable that this customer went through a bad experience and I empathize with her. I'm a patient of Dr. Abela's, and would like to put this in perspective. 1) Winchester Oral Surgery is not a general dentistry practice. It is an oral surgery practice. In contrast to oral surgery, a general dentistry practice deals with cases like restoration, teeth cleaning, examinations, x-rays, and cavity fills. These are much more predictable in terms of duration of office visit. In a surgery practice, there are scheduled cases (which may take longer than expected), and there are emergency cases, some of which also need emergency surgery. Even in a hospital setting, a case in the Operating Room may take longer than expected, or an emergency surgery may bump an elective scheduled surgery which will 'mess up' the entire surgical day at a hospital's Operating Room. It happens in the hospital and it happens in an oral surgery practice. It is unfortunate but unavoidable. 2) Winchester Oral Surgery has no incentive to keep patients waiting. It is very expensive to run an oral surgery office and I am sure the Winchester Oral surgery practice management has no reason whatsoever to keep patients waiting longer than what is absolutely necessary. 3) The complaints I see here deal with a very important part of healthcare delivery. Customer Service. I value good customer service and I have received personally outstanding customer service at this practice. However, I am willing endure deficient (perceived or real) customer service if I know I will be receiving the best surgical care possible. From their credentials, outcomes, training, and experience perspective, Winchester Oral Surgery doctors are at a nationally top-tier level; and you, your children or your loved ones will get outstanding surgical care. 4) My family and I have received outstanding surgical and personalized customer care at Winchester Oral Surgery. The first experience I had with Dr. Abella was last fall when my daughter's tooth was knocked out. We arrived at the Dental Office downstairs from his at closing time. It took the Dentists about 40 minutes to take care of her tooth. Dr. Abella stayed the whole time (almost an hour after closing) so he could stitch her lip and mouth. He didn't want us to have to go to the ER and wait for hours after the ordeal she had just been through. I didn't hesitate to go to him when my other daughter needed her four impacted wisdom teeth out. We barely waited for either of our appointments, and all 4 teeth were out in under an hour. She had a little extra swelling on one socket so I brought her in without an appointment. We were seen in about 10 minutes. There was no problem, just a little more swelling, but they were very respectful of my concerns. I will not hesitate to go back to Winchester Oral Surgery again. I think the whole staff, especially Dr. Abella, is wonderful. read more

The office is very clean, but small. TV is a great way too pass the time which you will be watching for about an hr before your appointment because they schedule patients too close together. The. Absolute. Best. Yes, I've read the other two reviews and could not be more amazed by the scatalogical opinions expressed. Please read the other 'hidden'reviews that for whatever reason Yelp deems not valuable. Maybe the level of expertise for an oral surgical practice should be measured by the size of the waiting room, the quality of the US/People magazines or the comfort of the chairs, but that is not a reasonable criteria nor is it my criteria. The criteria should be the process and the results, meaning no infections, little pain, in short, good expected results. My experience at Winchester Oral Surgery was extraordinary, from the concern expressed by the nursing staff to the caring expertise of Dr. Arbella. After the initial prick of the novacaine needle, I felt no pain, repeat, NO PAIN! No pain from the extraction, then the later implant caused no pain!There was no crash as the novacaine wore off later. Each step of the procedure was explained beforehand, and what to expect after, and what I needed to do to heal. Over the course of the implant, an eight month process, I experienced no discomfort or more importantly, infection. Yes, I did spend time in the waiting room; Dr. Arbella apologized as he had been called to the Winchester Hospital ER for a major vehicle accident, something beyond his control. Soooo, WOOHOO, this experience is as good as it gets! read more

I had an excellent experience here. Dr. Abela did the foundation for an implant for me. He was excellent and fast! I can't say it was a pleasant procedure but he did it so fast that It was done in about 15 minutes. He knew exactly what he was doing and his staff were great as well. He comes across as being very down to earth. Explained everything, took the time to make sure all my questions were answered. This was exactly what I was looking for. Brought my elderly mother for an appointment in her wheel chair and walker. It was a 10:30 am appointment and we arrived early to fill out the paperwork. The waiting room, which is the size of a phone booth, was already full. We sat there for two hours, were finally taken into an examination area, waited another fifteen minutes and left. After more than two hours we did not see either a doctor or a surgical assistant. The staff spent the morning ordering Chinese takeout for lunch and as we were leaving lunch was being delivered. I guess they are fine with the treatment we received because we have yet to hear from them regarding an apology. Obviously, we will seek a professional dentist to take care of my mother going forward, but given her age and the difficulty of even getting to an appointment an apology would certainly be appropriate. I also question the judgment of her primary dentist for sending her to such a practice. Hope they enjoyed the Chinese food! read more
