I had heard of Arlene's Grocery for years from friends. Whether they were just there for cheap drinks or live shows. If you've ever had a friend in a band, they probably have played here. For some reason, I don't think I have ever been here until recently. Unless there was a moment in my 20's where I was dragged here and had no recollection of it or the bar name (which is very likely). Anyway, I came for one of my boyfriend's friends birthdays during the holiday season. It's been a minute since I went to the LE side. We came later at night but it seems they still have a solid happy hour that runs until 8pm with $5 drafts, $7 combos, $6 wells, $7 wine. Beers late night are priced around $8, which I guess is average these days. Lots of disco ball action, separate rooms for shows. A little private room for bands to put their gear. There were a ton of people here and most of them were really into the photo booth. I have a feeling half of them were taking selfies with their phones in it. It's a new generation. Bathrooms are down in the basement. Beware. In the sense that I think one of the toilets in the ladies room was covered in vomit. It's a fun spot!

pretty fun spot! i was alittle nervous after reading all the negative reviews of the bouncer at this place but maybe they replaced the guy since but my friend and i had no trouble getting in with security dj was surprisingly good and people were pretty lively as well the drinks were reasonably priced and bartenders were pretty attentive considering how people were bombarding them the live music area is def more packed than the actual bar itself but good vibe. it felt like a mini club

While in NYC my wife's cousin wanted to go to a bar, so we stopped at this location. I thought it was a grocery store but it turns out it was not. They had security and carded us, although we were the only people there! I did not drink any alcohol but they did. No one seemed displeased, nor did they seem blown out of the water from the drinks they ordered. I did want to go get a drink eventually but I didn't. Not sure why. Otherwise, a nice place to chill while we waited for our next adventure.

Forgot all about Arlene's Grocery until a Yelp Friend checked in tonight. I'm a huge fan of live music and this venue gives bands the opportunity to play. What more can you ask for. Location is in a neighborhood with lots of food and activity for before or after the show. I'm also a fan of dive bars. Give me a place with history and it adds to my enjoyment. I soak up the vibe from not only other patrons but from the environment. Let's just say when your friends play you travel this way and that way. Any venue is okay. You don't have to drink to stay. If you're in Manhattan, mosey over this way!

The female bartender downstairs was super rude which really harshed the mellow of an otherwise cool bar.

Can people below 21 go in?

How strict are they about fake ID's? Specifically with women?

Got my real ID taken after they accused me of using a fake (I'm 22F, they made me call the cops to get it back) so wouldn't try a fake here lol

Stopped by here to kill time before our lunch reservations at Little Ruby's. Walking in gave me…read moreIreland vibes. It was a bit stuffy for my liking and I did not dare use the bathroom. It appears to be a local pub with no outdoor seating, a laid-back vibe, and affordable drinks. I liked that the atmosphere was chill, it wasn't bright (which I like), plenty of seating/stools and a good place to drink and wait until your lunch or possibly dinner reservations are ready.

I've been to Spring Lounge a handful of times, even spent my 24th birthday here and had the best…read moretime. I actually brought the bartenders birthday cake from Sant Ambroeus that night, which makes my experience last night even funnier in hindsight. I've noticed over time that some of the bartenders here have a habit of being incredibly friendly to men and noticeably less pleasant to women. Whatever. I'm there to have a drink, not make friends with the bartender, so I've never thought much of it. But last night was genuinely bizarre. I was ordering my fourth round of drinks and, as I had been doing all night, left a 20% tip on my tab. Unfortunately, I was using a card I rarely use and it didn't have enough funds to cover the entire charge, leaving a whopping $6 balance. Since I'd already tipped on the original transaction, I didn't add another tip to the remaining $6. Didn't think twice about it. When I went back for my fifth round, a grown man, probably in his 40s or 50s and wearing what I assume were Halloween-colored contacts, decided to confront me about supposedly not tipping him ALL NIGHT. I explained that I'd been tipping 20% on every tab and that the only charge I hadn't tipped on was the remaining $6, because I'd already tipped on the original bill. He continued to insist I hadn't tipped him or "his colleague" once. Then came my favorite part... He told me that if I "can't afford to come here, I shouldn't come." Sir this is Spring Lounge I genuinely couldn't believe a grown man was trying to lecture me about my finances over a tip on a $6 balance, especially when I'd been tipping all night. And to be that condescending to a 24-year-old woman over something he hadn't even bothered to verify is just embarrassing. The funniest part is that I still left him a 30% tip after he spoke to me that way. Apparently I can afford to come here after all! I understand that bartenders deal with rude customers and people who don't tip. I also understand that tipping is important. What I don't understand is the need to humiliate a paying customer over an assumption that wasn't even true I think some of the staff here have confused being a little rough around the edges with having a personality. There's a difference between a classic NYC dive bar with attitude and a middle-aged man being unnecessarily nasty to a young woman. One is charming. The other is just tacky. Anyway I won't be rushing back. Plenty of bars in New York where you can get a drink without having to defend your bank account to a man in Halloween contacts.
