No one would ever expect to find an authentic Venezuelan restaurant tucked away in the small town of Newberry, Florida. I stopped on a Saturday afternoon after hearing great reviews. I was the only one there and the owner started talking to me. She was extremely friendly and told me how her and her husband own the restaurant and cook everything authentically. She explained everything on the menu, including their best sellers. I ultimately went with a selection of the empanadas: carne molida (ground beef), pabellon (cheese, shredded beef, beans, plantains), pollo (chicken), and carne mechada (pulled meat). Despite the fact I was the only person there in the restaurant, my order took about 30 minutes to come out. I get that they're making their orders fresh but 30 minutes for four empanadas seemed excessive. Flavor wise, they were very tasty and packed with filling. First two things to know if you don't bother reading the rest of this review: 1) the portions are huge and 2) if you're not sure what to order, leave it up to the nice lady (owner?) at the counter. Everything I have had here is very good, albeit a limited menu, and the lady who works here is super-nice. The food is portioned great but I suggest bringing freinds so you can order and share because it can be hard to choose. I've never been much of an arepa fanatic but Arepas Milko has made me into one!! This place was a trek but worth every minute. I ordered a fried Pernil (pork) arepa and it was amazing! The arepa was the perfect balance of crispiness + a bite, and the pork was tender. The toppings also balanced out the flavors so well! I also ordered a pastelito with potatoes & cheese inside which was DELICIOUS!! If I could've tried everything on that menu, I would have in a heart beat! Please go support this delicious business!! They are a Venezuelan couple cooking up arepas, patacons, pastelitos, cachapas and other goodies. The food is very good! You can choose from several meat options for your arepas and patacon. I tried the pernil- baked pork, yummy! You can get the arepa grilled or fried but fried is better. The patacon is like an arepa but has plantains (maduro or tostones) for the "bun" part. The maduro is the sweet plantain and tostones is savory plantains. Arepas Milko pastelitos are savory filled with meat, so don't confuse them with Cuban sweet guava pastelitos! They're located by the Jonesville Persimmon and Fruit Tree nursery. From the Oaks Mall, just keep going past the Tioga Town Center for 5 miles and the food truck is on the right. Open on Fridays and Saturdays from 5pm-11pm! The line is long but goes quickly. They take credit cards. They do sell soda and bottled water. You can eat onsite but be warned of bugs because it is outside and you're next to a plant nursery. I saw many people do take out as well. The second time I got the chorizo, which is not that red Mexican stuff you will find in the grocery store, but is a delicious sliced sausage that they told me is from Colombia. Today we took a long awaited trip to Newberry to eat lunch (yes, you read that right LUNCH) at Arepas Milko. For us it was a trip south on 24/41 just after the one light in Newberry--for many it will be a trip West on Newberry road with a left at the light in Newberry. No matter where you are coming from--it is worth the short drive. In addition to their regular menu, they have a ready made lunch that you can have in your hands and ready to eat in minutes. Everything is fresh, hot and flavorful . There is variety and you do not leave hungry!! First-nothing is "hot" or "spicy" it is fully flavored and is what I call "comfort food. " It is homemade and it shows. You won't find this kind of flavor in institutional foods. No short cuts made at all. Family secret recipes abound! The ready made lunch has options: white or yellow rice, black or red beans, fried plantains and several meats (beef, chicken, grilled steak, pollo guisado). We got ours and ate outside in the shade and it was lovely. If you love Venezuelan food this is the place to go ! If you like food with lots of flavor, fresh cheese, veges and more--this is the place to go. If you have only had standard American "food" the beef and potatoes will remind you of "Sunday beef stew" but with more flavor, extremely tender and rib sticking goodness that will stay with you for the rest of the day. The chicken and potatoes was melt in your mouth tender and flavorful as well. The black beans were tender and well flavored but did not over power the rice. I am admittedly a rice snob--the rice was perfectly cooked, well seasoned and you got plenty of everything! I thought I would get 2 or 3 plantains but nope--they filled up the section with plantains. I love plantains so this made me very happy! For a take home, we also got Tequeños (fried cheese) and the special sauce is amazing! I can't tell you what is in it (I do know what it is but--family recipes...) but you will want to put it on everything! Don't look at the slight green tint and push it back--take a leap of faith and try it. You will then wonder if you can buy it by the jug. We gave them 5 out of 5 forks--high quality, flavorful foods. Each item had its own flavor but did not over power anything else. Each item was cooked perfectly. Variety--vegetarian, chicken, beef, cheeses and more. Want or need a good tasting hearty fast lunch?
