I like the salon. It's in a nice location, and I like to browse the stores on Broadway before or after I get my haircut. For me, the main attraction at Arellano is Rina. I am giving away my age here, but I followed her for over 20 years, since my student days at CAL (she used to work at Panache on Telegraph back then). She's a miracle worked when it comes to curly hair. One would think that any hairdresser would know how to work with curls, but I found out otherwise every time I tried someone else. I like the owner, Carlos, too. He hasn't cut my hair, but I saw his work on others and it looks great. What really impresses me about him is his paintings/collages he displays on the walls of the salon. I would consider buying some of those, and I think he does sell some, so maybe I will! read more

Carlos is a wonderful stylist. First, he does a thorough consult with you before he cuts your hair. You can bring pictures and he will make suggestions regarding face shape, texture, and maintenance. He has a keen eye for details and is very precise in his cutting technique. He suggested I move away from ash browns and into the golden browns and I'm much happier with my hair. Rina is the best! I came in after my hair was totally screwed up (orange!) and she fixed it right up! I started having RIna cut my hair years ago when we used to work across the street from each other. We've both moved on, and I now live about 30 minutes away, but it's a no-brainer for me - she is the only one I let cut my hair! She has always done well by me . . . asks me what I want done, if I have any important events I need to 'look good' for, and so forth. I have been going to Carlos for almost 4 years now, and i can say... he is someone that i strongly look up to for advice and tips of hair, coloring and styling. Through out the years, Carlos has been the most adventures stylist that I have ever meet! When i decided to cut my locks, i swear, he was the only one to really encourage me and help me change up my style. When i decided to go Rhiana red (as my family and sisters say lol) he gave me a red color that really accented my skin tone and features. His also helped me with coloring my clip in extensions (which he didn't have to, but he really took time out of his day to do so). its just been great geting ideas from Carlos, and also when i used to work for him. he taught me a lot, about coloring and out of beauty school techniques that i still use! One thing i do wish more often then so, that he would have hired me to be a part or full time assent. i felt like i could have learned so much more with that type of hands on. Besides the point. he is awesome and amazing at what he does, and he really does listen to you when you have concerns or want something different to change up your everyday routine. what's also another big plus, is that he does not talk a lot like most stylist. lol- something i really appreciate, especially because i have had other stylist who just want to know everything about your personal life and never know how to respect those boundaries. he is very quick, efficient with his time, uses a good amount of product, and is a perfectionist (which is awesome!) i really LOVE going to Carlos and have a wonderful experience every time! read more

Carlos is fantastic. Discusses what you want and what you'll actually do afterward with it, checks in with you as he cuts, and spends time teaching you how to put it up, etc afterward. Usually I find that hairstylists insist on putting product and blowdrys that I'll never do, and so it only looks good on the day I get it cut. He is always cognizant of what my needs are and I always walk away feeling like a million bucks. I actually drive all the way from Danville to get my Hair done here. Not just for the great service but for all the time that I've had to reschedule or book a last minute appointment due to my crazy schedule with work and Kids. Rina Moyal ROCKED my fine dull limp hair this morning! She is super fun, friendly and had me walking out with a huge smile. I found parking within the block. I gave her a few requests and she got it; in and out in under 2 hours! I've been on a quest to find a hair stylist for the last 3 years. I've been to a variety of salons in the Bay Area (including Noe Valley and Marina District is SF) and spent anywhere from $167-$300 for a cut and highlight. I thought maybe I am not paying enough and need to kick it up a notch at one of the swanky salons. So the last time i had my hair styled was my $150 cut and because it was so expensive, I had to get my color at another salon. I have not been back to either salon. I don't believe it's the amount of money, fancy tea, silky robes, time or neighborhood you go to for something that defines peoples first impression of you or how you feel when you look in the mirror - It's the artist behind the chair. I chose Carlos because I needed an emergency color and cut. His salon was in my neighborhood and he was able to fit me in quickly. Little did I know that he was so talented and such an amazing listener. He doesn't just listen -- he executes what he hears.I know exactly what I want -- cut, color, attention to certain quirks ("my head goes THIS way here but I want my hair to make it appear it goes THAT way"). To my amazement, I didn't even have to remind him of that request when the color was done and it was time for the cut. And by the way, I'm just as picky about the color ("could you make highlights narrow, not wide, and I'd like them on the a little redder, instead of blonder, and make the base color one shade lighter, please").
