The Granola Bar is an interestingly titled restaurant in the beautiful town of Darien, Connecticut…read more When I first heard the name, I thought it was a frozen yogurt kind of shop with healthy toppings like granola, fruit, etc. but it's actually a full on breakfast and lunch spot with many options, some quite hearty. While the breakfast and brunch menu items were tempting, I was in the mood for a good old fashioned burger. There's just one on the menu, with specific toppings but I just got a regular cheddar cheese one with avocado and mayo on the side. The result was delicious and just what I needed on that gorgeous day. I actually started with a cookies & cream vanilla iced latte, and believe it or not it actually wasn't overly sweet and very well balanced. I tasted a strawberry ginger lemonade that someone else ordered which was great too, actually having strawberry fruit pieces in there. The interior was nice and bright, with kind of a nautical vibe which wouldn't be out of place since this area is very close to the ocean. The service was great, so for sure check out this fun spot if you're in the area!

The one in Darien is relatively new and is very conveniently located right by the train station. The decor is stylish with a nautical theme that is very nice fitting for a seafood restaurant. They have outdoor seating and a nice bar area. We sat in one of the booths, which are high up but have a bar where you can rest your feet comfortably. James was our server, and he was great at explaining the menu and answered all of our questions regarding the food. I ordered the miso salmon entrée and my friend got the reel deal with salmon. The salmon was very nicely seasoned and cooked perfectly. The vegetables were delicious, cooked al dente so they were firm and full of flavor. I only wish they would have given a bigger piece of avocado since the slice was tiny. Prices are on the pricy side but not outrageous.

Enjoy fresh delicious crepes at this cozy European style crêperie in Darien. Service is always warm…read moreand friendly. It's the perfect place to chill any time of the day. Savory crepes are offered Breton style using buckwheat flour. These galettes bretonnes are light and crispy with an earthly toasted flavor, the ideal counterpoint to the fillings that accompany them such as hearty European cheeses, charcuterie, tangy pickles or spicy arugula leaves. Among them, galettes Choupette (fig, arugula, prosciutto, goat cheese), Ractiflette (potato, watercress, Raclette cheese, charcuterie) and Complète Jambon (Gruyère, organic egg, country ham) are super delish and totally worth a try. Sweet crepes, made with whole wheat flour, are the soft fluffy crepes we are more familiar with around here. Personal favorites include the Traditionnelle (butter, sugar), Hugette (pear, dark chocolate, almonds) and the Amour et jalousie (Nutella, banana, strawberry). Lots of beverage options here! The coffee is great, as are their ciders and their freshly squeezed (orange or grapefruit) juices.

I followed my instincts and ordered the homemade corned beef hash, with one scrambled egg and hash browns, and was very pleased with everything (except the bottled grapefruit juice, which was mostly corn syrup). As you can see from the photo, the chef had a generous hand! The service was friendly. A lot of workers came in to order breakfast sandwiches. I think there were nine small tables in the whole place. Our go-to CT diner spot (NYC ex-pats approved!)…read more My wife and I used to live in NYC, and like most ex-pats, we consider ourselves absolute "diner people." We seriously missed the vibe, the regulars, and the familiar faces at our old city hangouts when we first moved to Connecticut. Luckily, we've found a few local spots that stepped right into that void, and Darien Diner is easily one of our favorites. First off, the vibe here is awesome. It has that classic, retro stainless steel exterior, a great eat-in counter, old-school soda fountains, and tons of 1950s memorabilia inside. It's always super clean and well-maintained. During the pandemic, they had a makeshift tent and wooden deck for outdoor seating. They took it down a while back, but the *best* news is they just finished building a permanent foundation for a brand new outdoor dining area. My wife and I cannot wait for it to open so we can bring our fur babies along for breakfast again. Speaking of breakfast, they serve it all day and the food is pure American comfort. If you're going the breakfast route, you can't go wrong with the Farmers Omelette, the Two Eggs and Three Meats, or the Protein Breakfast (grilled chicken and tomatoes) if you're trying to be good. For lunch, their Patty Melt is elite, and I'm a massive fan of the Thanksgiving Sandwich (turkey, gravy, cranberry, and stuffing on a flatbread) and their Gyro platter. A quick heads up on timing: this place gets absolutely packed around noon on the weekends--we're talking a line out the door. If you want to sit down, definitely aim for either 11:00 AM or after 1:00 PM to miss the rush. Weekdays are much calmer, but on weekends we usually just order takeout to avoid the crowds altogether. The location is incredibly convenient, right off Exit 13 on I-95. Plus, there's a Splash Car Wash right next door, so we usually kill two birds with one stone and get the car cleaned before or after we eat. Pro-Tip: Just watch your speed when you're getting off the I-95 ramp onto Connecticut Ave. Cops love to hide right there and ticket people catching the light. Definitely recommend this spot if you're looking for a solid, welcoming diner in the area!

We ordered the Peremech Sandwich twice -- Tut's spiced ground beef wrapped in pastry with bouillon, sour cream, soy sauce, and sautéed onion -- unique, savory, and surprisingly filling.
