Ate outside today- May 5th- first day of Roots outdoor dining for the year. Eating in the courtyard was very nice! The restaurant is near the train station and a lot of shopping areas, but always is quiet. Got the Roots special- slider, 1/2 lobster roll and French onion soup. Delicious and great value. Waiter provided great service- may have been a little too eager to please, but had good intentions. If you are in that neighborhood, by all means, head over there for a great meal! read more

Definitely add this spot to your fancy date night and celebration dinner rotation. This steakhouse is the real deal with top-notch, old school service. I brought my boyfriend here for his birthday and we were very, very impressed with our experience from the moment we walked through the doors! The steak might be the best we EVER had. Definitely a pricey place but worth every penny for an upscale dinner. Book ahead as this place is a hotspot. We can't wait to come back! read more

This place is conveniently located right by the Metro North Station. The ambiance is very much of a high end steakhouse, dark wood paneling and there is a large bar area in the main dining room. We sat in the smaller dining area that has a nautical theme. The place was packed so reservations are a must. The service was great, all of the staff here that we interacted with were attentive and gracious. Our server Brynne, was great at explaining the menu and answering all of our questions. We ordered the calamari to start and NY strip steak with mashed potatoes and asparagus to share. The calamari was great and was complimented well by the roasted red pepper marinara sauce that came with it. The steak was cooked medium rare and had great flavor. I loved the mashed potatoes! Unfortunately, the asparagus was accompanied by a mayo aioli that I could not eat due to my extreme disgust of mayonnaise. The server offered to take back the asparagus, but we were already eating our meal and my friend liked it. I just ate more of the mashed potatoes. For dessert we ordered the creme brulee, this was the perfect way to end our meal. read more

Roots Steakhouse in the charming New England town of Darien is a hidden gem nestled in between the Post Road (Route 1) and Darien Train Station. The building is adjacent to a courtyard with a water fountain surrounded by small shops that you'd expect to see in a small New England town. Parking is free and plentiful but the spaces can be somewhat narrow but fear not because there's also street parking for larger vehicles. The restaurant's red brick exterior and architecture blends in well with its New England surroundings. The atmosphere inside is a comfortable blend of soft natural light, candles and soft music playing in the background. Service was impeccable recommending starters and entrees based on our dietary preferences and restrictions. We started with French Onion Soup and the Chilled Jumbo Shrimp Cocktail which was served on a bed of clouds (see the video). For the main courses, I opted for the Open-faced Colossal Crab Cake Sandwich and Pomme Frites. My wife ordered the Roots Express Lunch with the Filet Mignon Slider Sandwich and Homestyle Salad. For dessert, we had the New England Style Cheesecake. The food was fresh and perfectly prepared by the Executive Chef, The presentation immaculate. What a superlative experience! I highly recommend Roots Steakhouse in Darien! read more

We stopped in for dinner. Reservations were made. They immediately walked us to our table and expertly took care of our dining needs. For my entree I had the ribeye steak with a side of creamed spinach. The steak was cooked at a perfect medium rare temperature. The creamed spinach was very good as well. My girlfriend had the clam chowder which was really tasty. In addition she also had the Wagyu dumplings which were very tasty, the spicy sauce was really good. For dessert we had the butter cake which was topped off with vanilla ice cream with a blueberry sauce. I really loved the cake, it was delicious. read more

Great steakhouse ambiance. Impeccable service. Started with the Rhode Island calamari and tuna tartare - both superb. Had the 12oz filet, rib eye with whipped potatoes and asparagus sides - perfectly cooked. Finished off with cappuccino, espresso, butter cake and espresso crème brûlée - wow! We will be back! read more

Absolutely phenomenal experience. The steak was cooked perfectly -- juicy, flavorful, and exactly to temperature. The whole place has that classic 1950s New York steakhouse vibe -- elegant, warm, and timeless. The staff were attentive without being overbearing, and the restaurant itself was spotless. The seafood was incredibly fresh, the Scotch selection top-notch, and the service from start to finish was outstanding. You can tell everyone here takes pride in what they do. 10/10 -- would absolutely return. A rare gem that delivers on every level. read more

Excellent in all respects, ambiance, service, food, drink. Friend and I sat at the bar and received excellent service from Chris, who, when asked if he made a good Old Fashioned replied, "I feel I make a pretty good one," backed it up. The only thing wrong with it was evidently it is not cherry season, as seen in the picture. Great chicken parm, perfectly cooked and seasoned. Adding a star, if I could add another, was the absence of televisions that distract, and detract, from convivial conversations. read more

Ambience and service were impeccable. The wagyu sliders were the best I've ever had. The lobster roll and steak sandwich was awesome. Enjoyed the clam chowder and French onion soups. Arnold Palmer presentation was delightful. We highly recommend and will definitely come back on our next trip back to Darien. read more

Not impressed. Waitress was dismissive snd rushed us. Very disappointed. It was our 40th wedding anniversary and we expected more. Disappointing read more

The location is perfect and the interior is pristine. Wonderful and comfortable bar with very attentive bartenders ready to swing some drinks your way with impeccable attention to their craft. In fact, the first time I had a bartender ask me if I prefer my gin martini shaken or stirred. Blew my mind because it's such an obvious thing - but since nobody ever asks - I just deal with shaken.. My wife had a tasty smoked old fashioned and we eased into the evening. The staff were all great. We got introduced to Abigail, Chrises (apparently there are three lol. Awesome) and a Connor. Abigail and Chris helped us pick out some great apps and suggested a Ribeye Filet to share. Great call, amazing cut and full of flavor. Darien needed this. Really. Great ambiance and better service. read more

Roots Steakhouse - Grand front entrance - Steakhouses Near Me - Darien, Connecticut

Bigger than it looks from the outside Seated on time Not rushed Good food. Poppers (Yorkshire pudding instead of bread) was an interesting twist and very nice I had wagyu dumplings (wasn't hugely keen but overall ok) and yellowfin tuna with salad which was great My spouse and friends has a variety of dishes - beef wellington, salads, wagyu steak. All excellent Some good wine selections - we had a nice bottle of French wine and other drinks Good deserts and coffee Easiest way too sum up Roost is that it's like going to a far superior 1020 at a price that is higher but not hugely so. Easily the best food offering all round in Darien (and yes it's better than the French place which has food that is hit and miss) read more

We went to Roots for Mother's Day and what a treat it was!! The staff is very friendly, professional, and well versed with the menu. The ambiance has an elegant and classy feel/look to it. The space is not only beautiful, but you actually feel like you're with just your company and not sitting on top of other patrons. The food is so so so so delicious!! Great portions for the price. The drinks are top of the line. Our waiter's name was Michael and he was incredible!! He really made the experience even better!!! He made awesome recommendations and carried himself with such confidence!! We will be back for sure!! read more

Felt like a night out a baseball game loud and full of with hits and misses. The meal started strong with tasty popovers and yummy lobster bites however, things turned when the chowder arrived. The chowder lacked flavor and had the consistency of warmed skim milk. The dry aged steak was cooked perfectly and was delicious but the crust on the Wellington was a bit too oily. The truffle fries were fine as long as you weren't expecting a prominent truffle flavor. A stand out was the attentive and kind staff. read more

The ambience is typical steak house and the staff was certainly friendly and attentive. Where things fell short was the food quality and presentation. My beef Wellington was dry and tasteless. My wife had the prime NY strip which was over cooked and tasteless as well. The crab cake for an appetizer was just fair. Overall the pop over was the best part of the meal. Unfortunately, very disappointing , never to return again. read more

Omg everything was sooo good. Ask for Kevin as your server, he is fantastic!! He was very knowledgeable about the menu, made a point to connect the allergies noted in my on line reservation and made a point to celebrate our birthdays that again were noted in the reservation. Such a great experience!! All of the food was great! read more

The bartender with the long brown braid has no business working in customer service. She flew into a rage when I asked her for utensils after sitting for 5 minutes with food I could not eat. The management has had a habit of hiring surly and nasty servers. I will spend my money elsewhere. read more

Perfect! On all levels. Service was fantastic, the steak was cooked perfectly and tasted great and the cocktails were classic with a modern presentation. Two separate rooms were designed down to the details. We sat in the ocean room which was outfitted with paintings of fishing boats and lighthouses. Against the deep cherrywood accents the atmosphere was very classy. I had the 20oz prime and my wife had the 8oz filet. Both were cooked to Med-Rare and had great flavor. Can't wait to be back! read more

I can't believe people haven't left reviews on this place yet! Came here last night for the first time and we sat at the bar. The service from the moment we walked in, to leaving was incredible. Claudia and Christin (I think that was his name) were so attentive behind the bar and incredibly friendly. We had the tuna tartare on a plate of soy sauce which was lovely. Then we shared the Mac and cheese and shrimp appetizers. Guzzled more vodka sodas than I intended, but the ambience was so nice, I got giddy and carried away . Will def be back. So happy that Darien has this place. Do you do breakfast by any chance? Hair of the dog? ;) See you soon. read more

One of the better steak houses in an area with few options. Service was great and the restaurant was surprisingly busy for a Tuesday night.

Had lunch the other day with a friend, had the Express Lunch. The quality of food and service is excellent, they make you feel like family. Geoff,Dan and David are great managers and the staff is so friendly, thanks to Kyle our bartender who took care of us read more

We stumbled across this gem for lunch one day and were really pleasantly surprised. The service was professional and pleasant. The space looks really high end. The lunch specials were a bargain for some amazing food. I got a combo that included soup, salad and a really wonderful steak slider that had perfectly cooked filet. read more

I cannot say enough about Roots, the food is outstanding, with beautiful presentation. The old world steakhouse in NYC has been recreated with its white tablecloths, professional service, and a beautiful yet fun decor, AND I love banquettes. Beautiful room and if you like EAR SPLITTING NOISE you'll love it here. This is what they call a "restaurant concept": phony stuff like the bar tender shaking your hand, clearly decided by a consultant. The food was spotty. Slider appetizer was excellent. The calamari was so over seasoned with pepper that we sent it back -- first time ever from dozens of calimari orders in restaurants over the years. Salmon was very good, chicken parmesan was also way overseasoned and not good. Mac and cheese was good but hardly "famous." Carrot cake was superb. So a decidedly mixed bag. But the deafening sound (average 87 decibells -- illegal under OS?HA standards) made it very unpleasant. A great place to take your spouse if you are at the stage where you have nothing to say to eachother. read more

Great cocktails. Sat at a high top in the bar area. Atmosphere was fun and food was great too

My second visit. Now my go to place for (the "express") lunch. The clam chowder is the best I have had in my 90+ years. Ask for Michael as your server. (Reviews are overly critical. I do not know how they could do any better. Yes, there were a few loud guests; this is Fairfield county where everyone feels entitled. Yes, it is expensive; worth every penny. As to service; ask for Michael.) read more

Visited this new Darien location for the first time on Saturday evening. I had been to a couple of their NJ locations some years ago and always remember them to be terrific. Because of that, I had high hopes and wasn't disappointed. Roots is the quintessential old-school Steak House but refined to the likes and wants of the 2026 customer (meaning the decor is elevated and that woman can enjoy it also, not just men). The food was sublime, the atmosphere is exceptional but most importantly Service, Service, Service!...Super friendly and professional. Looking forward to returning soon! read more

Fabulous new restaurant. Great menu, magnificent decor, excellent service Fabulous desserts.

Had a reservation made for several weeks but showed up with a special guest traveling to Darien from out of town and was told they had no tables for us. They offered to let us sit in the overcrowded and loud bar which is ridiculous. Will never go back and will make sure to tell everyone I know in Darien to avoid the restaurant. I hope it fails. read more

Tried making a reservation for six people on various dates. None would accept a reservation for six only for four. I called them and got their answering machine. Awesome food, service, and ambiance! We had lunch at the bar and we were very happy. Will definitely return.

We tried Roots a few nights ago. The food was absolutely AMAZING! I would love to give 5 stars across the board....but there's always a "but". We had a reservation for a high top, and when we arrived, there were no high tops available, which is a bummer being that we specifically reserved one. We were offered a "bar booth". The booth was actually cozy, but there were two problems. The first was, many times I found myself face level with bar goers butts. Yep. No personal space or awareness. I understand it's a bar and it was a Saturday night, but the staff could do a better job of recognizing and addressing when people are standing around, almost on top of the people sitting and eating dinner. Second problem at the bar booth was the acoustics. Being that there were a ton of people at the bar it made hearing each other completely impossible. We will definitely return, because again, the food was amazing. But we will absolutely be waiting for a high top, or a table in the dining room. read more

Horrible stay away , not worth a penny. Poorly made food led to all night throwing up. The service was not good although waitress was really nice but others were extremely rude and called one person in our party "arrogant" for saying that the food took too long to come out and nonaoologies. The bar was nice but the tables were not, so loud and we could not even hear our own voices. All the food was ok but the steak was most disappointing; it was a nyc strip so charcoaled might as well call it "charcoal galore.) Plus the quote on quote wagyu dumplings were most definitely a let down -overly fried and flavorless. The only good food were the popovers and the lemonade, IPA beer. read more

We have dined at Roots at least 3 times for dinner because we enjoy a good steak. 2 of the experiences, we were seated in the bar booth. Both times, there was a plume of dust next to our table. Both times I told the hostess about it, and it just disgusts me. I can't believe how dusty this restaurant is and no one bothered to clean it since they opened! The third time we were seated in the dining room, and it is noisy. The dover sole is pre portioned out and not de boned at the table. Very surprising. My ribeye steak was undercooked all three times, but they eventually got it right after sending it back. The side options are all amazing, as were the popovers. The onion soup was delicious. The manager walks around without a purpose..just looking, but never introducing himself or seeing flaws. This place is missing elegance and perfection. Very good cocktails, and desserts. I should have taken a photo of the heap of dust next to our table and posted it. Truly gross! read more

We stopped for just one drink on the Saturday of Labor Day weekend. We wound up staying for dinner. Surpassed all of my expectations in every aspect. Staff is on point! Everyone was very friendly, professional and well dressed! The attention to every detail is exceptional. White table cloths, table side service, room temp butter with flaked sea salt for our complimentary pop-overs, perfectly presented oysters with homemade cocktail sauce and fresh horseradish. There was no way I was going home to cook chicken as I saw the entrees coming out of the kitchen. Everything was exceptional and I cannot wait to go back! read more

We made our first visit this week. Can't wait to go back. The restaurant is physically very inviting, especially the bar area and its great mural. We were greeted warmly, seated and served promptly and the efficient, gracious service continued throughout our meal. (One note - the bar is lively and somewhat loud. If that bothers you, ask to sit in the dining room or the outside seating area instead). The drinks were good, not strong enough for our taste, but we may be spoiled. There are lots of attractive wine choices and I appreciate that the wine list is ample, but not so large that you get lost in it. The popovers which arrive with drinks are toasty. Ours was a little too blackened while also being somewhat raw dough in the middle so maybe they need to work on the baking time/temp? The salads were ample and delicious. The chopped salad could use a little stronger flavor - maybe a sharper dressing, some olives, some jalapeños? The arugula salad was perfect. Both could easily be split. We both ordered sea food mains- one scallops, one tuna. Both were extraordinarily good. Probably the best seafood entrees we have had in a long long time. Ironic, as this is a steakhouse. We can't wait to come back and try the beef. This place is a great addition to the Darien dining scene. read more
