The location is perfect and the interior is pristine. Wonderful and comfortable bar with very attentive bartenders ready to swing some drinks your way with impeccable attention to their craft. In fact, the first time I had a bartender ask me if I prefer my gin martini shaken or stirred. Blew my mind because it's such an obvious thing - but since nobody ever asks - I just deal with shaken.. My wife had a tasty smoked old fashioned and we eased into the evening. The staff were all great. We got introduced to Abigail, Chrises (apparently there are three lol. Awesome) and a Connor. The restaurant is near the train station and a lot of shopping areas, but always is quiet. Got the Roots special- slider, 1/2 lobster roll and French onion soup. Delicious and great value. Waiter provided great service- may have been a little too eager to please, but had good intentions. If you are in that neighborhood, by all means, head over there for a great meal! read more

The ambience is typical steak house and the staff was certainly friendly and attentive. Where things fell short was the food quality and presentation. My beef Wellington was dry and tasteless. My wife had the prime NY strip which was over cooked and tasteless as well. The crab cake for an appetizer was just fair. Overall the pop over was the best part of the meal. This place is conveniently located right by the Metro North Station. The ambiance is very much of a high end steakhouse, dark wood paneling and there is a large bar area in the main dining room. We sat in the smaller dining area that has a nautical theme. The place was packed so reservations are a must. The service was great, all of the staff here that we interacted with were attentive and gracious. Our server Brynne, was great at explaining the menu and answering all of our questions. We ordered the calamari to start and NY strip steak with mashed potatoes and asparagus to share. The calamari was great and was complimented well by the roasted red pepper marinara sauce that came with it. The steak was cooked medium rare and had great flavor. I loved the mashed potatoes! Unfortunately, the asparagus was accompanied by a mayo aioli that I could not eat due to my extreme disgust of mayonnaise. The server offered to take back the asparagus, but we were already eating our meal and my friend liked it. I just ate more of the mashed potatoes. Roots Steakhouse in the charming New England town of Darien is a hidden gem nestled in between the Post Road (Route 1) and Darien Train Station. The building is adjacent to a courtyard with a water fountain surrounded by small shops that you'd expect to see in a small New England town. Parking is free and plentiful but the spaces can be somewhat narrow but fear not because there's also street parking for larger vehicles. The restaurant's red brick exterior and architecture blends in well with its New England surroundings. The atmosphere inside is a comfortable blend of soft natural light, candles and soft music playing in the background. Service was impeccable recommending starters and entrees based on our dietary preferences and restrictions. We started with French Onion Soup and the Chilled Jumbo Shrimp Cocktail which was served on a bed of clouds (see the video). For the main courses, I opted for the Open-faced Colossal Crab Cake Sandwich and Pomme Frites. My wife ordered the Roots Express Lunch with the Filet Mignon Slider Sandwich and Homestyle Salad. For dessert, we had the New England Style Cheesecake. The food was fresh and perfectly prepared by the Executive Chef, The presentation immaculate. What a superlative experience! We stopped in for dinner. Reservations were made. They immediately walked us to our table and expertly took care of our dining needs. For my entree I had the ribeye steak with a side of creamed spinach. The steak was cooked at a perfect medium rare temperature. The creamed spinach was very good as well. My girlfriend had the clam chowder which was really tasty. In addition she also had the Wagyu dumplings which were very tasty, the spicy sauce was really good. We went to Roots for Mother's Day and what a treat it was!! The staff is very friendly, professional, and well versed with the menu. The ambiance has an elegant and classy feel/look to it. Felt like a night out a baseball game loud and full of with hits and misses. The meal started strong with tasty popovers and yummy lobster bites however, things turned when the chowder arrived. The chowder lacked flavor and had the consistency of warmed skim milk. The dry aged steak was cooked perfectly and was delicious but the crust on the Wellington was a bit too oily. Perfect! On all levels. Service was fantastic, the steak was cooked perfectly and tasted great and the cocktails were classic with a modern presentation. Two separate rooms were designed down to the details. We sat in the ocean room which was outfitted with paintings of fishing boats and lighthouses. I can't believe people haven't left reviews on this place yet! Came here last night for the first time and we sat at the bar. The service from the moment we walked in, to leaving was incredible. Claudia and Christin (I think that was his name) were so attentive behind the bar and incredibly friendly. We had the tuna tartare on a plate of soy sauce which was lovely. Then we shared the Mac and cheese and shrimp appetizers. Guzzled more vodka sodas than I intended, but the ambience was so nice, I got giddy and carried away . Will def be back. Visited this new Darien location for the first time on Saturday evening. I had been to a couple of their NJ locations some years ago and always remember them to be terrific. Because of that, I had high hopes and wasn't disappointed. Roots is the quintessential old-school Steak House but refined to the likes and wants of the 2026 customer (meaning the decor is elevated and that woman can enjoy it also, not just men). This is what they call a "restaurant concept": phony stuff like the bar tender shaking your hand, clearly decided by a consultant. The food was spotty. Slider appetizer was excellent. The calamari was so over seasoned with pepper that we sent it back -- first time ever from dozens of calimari orders in restaurants over the years. Salmon was very good, chicken parmesan was also way overseasoned and not good. Mac and cheese was good but hardly "famous." Carrot cake was superb. So a decidedly mixed bag. But the deafening sound (average 87 decibells -- illegal under OS?HA standards) made it very unpleasant. Had a reservation made for several weeks but showed up with a special guest traveling to Darien from out of town and was told they had no tables for us. They offered to let us sit in the overcrowded and loud bar which is ridiculous. Will never go back and will make sure to tell everyone I know in Darien to avoid the restaurant. We tried Roots a few nights ago. The food was absolutely AMAZING! I would love to give 5 stars across the board....but there's always a "but". We had a reservation for a high top, and when we arrived, there were no high tops available, which is a bummer being that we specifically reserved one. We were offered a "bar booth". The booth was actually cozy, but there were two problems. The first was, many times I found myself face level with bar goers butts. Yep. No personal space or awareness. I understand it's a bar and it was a Saturday night, but the staff could do a better job of recognizing and addressing when people are standing around, almost on top of the people sitting and eating dinner. Second problem at the bar booth was the acoustics. Being that there were a ton of people at the bar it made hearing each other completely impossible. We will definitely return, because again, the food was amazing. But we will absolutely be waiting for a high top, or a table in the dining room. read more

The service was not good although waitress was really nice but others were extremely rude and called one person in our party "arrogant" for saying that the food took too long to come out and nonaoologies. The bar was nice but the tables were not, so loud and we could not even hear our own voices. All the food was ok but the steak was most disappointing; it was a nyc strip so charcoaled might as well call it "charcoal galore.) We have dined at Roots at least 3 times for dinner because we enjoy a good steak. 2 of the experiences, we were seated in the bar booth. Both times, there was a plume of dust next to our table. Both times I told the hostess about it, and it just disgusts me. I can't believe how dusty this restaurant is and no one bothered to clean it since they opened! The third time we were seated in the dining room, and it is noisy. The dover sole is pre portioned out and not de boned at the table. Very surprising. My ribeye steak was undercooked all three times, but they eventually got it right after sending it back. The side options are all amazing, as were the popovers.The onion soup was delicious. The manager walks around without a purpose..just looking, but never introducing himself or seeing flaws. This place is missing elegance and perfection. Very good cocktails, and desserts. We stopped for just one drink on the Saturday of Labor Day weekend. We wound up staying for dinner. Surpassed all of my expectations in every aspect. Staff is on point! Everyone was very friendly, professional and well dressed! The attention to every detail is exceptional. White table cloths, table side service, room temp butter with flaked sea salt for our complimentary pop-overs, perfectly presented oysters with homemade cocktail sauce and fresh horseradish. We made our first visit this week. Can't wait to go back. The restaurant is physically very inviting, especially the bar area and its great mural. We were greeted warmly, seated and served promptly and the efficient, gracious service continued throughout our meal. (One note - the bar is lively and somewhat loud. If that bothers you, ask to sit in the dining room or the outside seating area instead). The drinks were good, not strong enough for our taste, but we may be spoiled. There are lots of attractive wine choices and I appreciate that the wine list is ample, but not so large that you get lost in it. The popovers which arrive with drinks are toasty. Ours was a little too blackened while also being somewhat raw dough in the middle so maybe they need to work on the baking time/temp? The salads were ample and delicious. The chopped salad could use a little stronger flavor - maybe a sharper dressing, some olives, some jalapeños? The arugula salad was perfect. Both could easily be split. We both ordered sea food mains- one scallops, one tuna. Both were extraordinarily good. Probably the best seafood entrees we have had in a long long time. Ironic, as this is a steakhouse. We can't wait to come back and try the beef. This place is a great addition to the Darien dining scene. read more
