Having previously been a very vocal advocate of this place (even to the point of bringing people to see it), sadly I have to retract my support. Roughly 9 months ago I purchased a very large, rather expensive pocket door. I saw termite damage on the bottom & commented on it at the time, but I thought it was limited to just that spot. I did not inspect thoroughly enough, however. The project I purchased it for was extensive & I had a delay (the birth of a child will do that), but I stored it on blocks with care. Finally, I got to the part where I would hang the door. In cleaning it, I actually punched two holes through it due to MUCH more extensive termite damage than I had assumed. I found a number of other spots that were almost certainly infested previously. I contacted the company to seek an exchange. The best they would offer was half off a new door (about $350). We reluctantly offered up to $200, but were refused. Note that they still had the same doors now that they did 9 months ago, so this isn't a hot item flying out the door on a common basis. While they carry an array of really interesting stuff, make certain to inspect your purchase with a magnifying glass & be prepared to eat your investment. As for me, that will be my last trip to their shop & I'll also be telling everyone I know: BUYER BEWARE! UPDATE: I decided to try to salvage what I could with the intent of putting windows in the panels. After removing the trim, I'm rethinking that. Just in case anyone thinks this might have occurred in my home, note how extensive the damage is in the 4th & 5th pictures! UPDATE 2: In response to the owner, the termite damage on the bottom WAS noted & discussed. It was why I contemplated one of their other doors. What's more, the person loading the door actually broke off a piece of the trim from the bottom (the upper right in the first picture) & commented on the termite damage directly. Stupidly, i said it seemed to be isolated only to that one area .So... No, that is absolutely a lie on their part. Further, I have pest control come in as a preventative measure (& no, not anywhere near monthly as that wouldn't make any sense). Since we had some damage long before we occupied the house, that seemed like a wise move. No active termite tunnels were found in our home nor in the door. Again, I loved this place before, told everyone who would listen about it, & I'm a huge Toledo business promoter. But now I have to advise otherwise: use them only if you're absolutely willing to eat your investment. read more

While we didn't find precisely what we were looking for, they have a lot of interesting architectural pieces, and the prices are fair. The smell of cat urine, however, is fairly overwhelming. And we were there in the winter. I can't imagine what this place smells like in the summer. read more

Just visited Architectural Artifacts for the first time to purchase an item I saw listed on eBay. Fascinating place! Lots of wonderful items to add drama and style to any abode. Both Bob and Jane were very friendly and helpful and are pretty interesting folks. Worth a visit! read more

I could not select a subcategory for Architectural Artifacts. Part antique-shop, part art-gallery and part Home Depot, this store covers a lot of area. Housed inside an old warehouse in downtown Toledo, Architectural Artifacts is the kind of store where I go just to look around, which is exceedingly rare for me, as I'm not a huge shopper. From $10,000 Ming Dynasty statues to $60 Buddha heads, you can seemingly find something for everyone's taste and price range here. The store specializes in REAL restoration hardware, not just stuff from that name brand of products. Need a circa 1880's, beautifully handcrafted doorknob? Find it here! Need a cupola for your roof? They have it! Need a marble fountain rescued from a French monastery (and really, who doesn't need on of those), come on over! Looking around here is like sorting through the attic of the Louvre! There are rooms upon rambling rooms of treasures! If you go, make sure to go upstairs. The staircase is hiding toward the back left of the store, and it's sort of a creepy "am I allowed up here" sort of passage. The whole second floor houses old doors, sinks, bathtubs, church pews, desks and such. It's so fun to walk around inside such a neat old building and look for that perfect item for my pretend house in the woods. And, don't worry, although you can see through the slats in the floor, you won't fall through. read more

Certainly a great place if you need an old sink or a set of antique drawer pulls, but the cat urine smell is so strong I could barely stand to be in there at all. read more

Been going here for years and have found some wonderful treasures. It is quite the mix of stuff. Lots of old doors, lighting and hardware. Lots of cats. And most importantly lots of true architectural artifacts. The main floor is always interesting. One of the few antique/salvage stores that hasn't been depleted by the internet. It is our main reason for going to Toledo. read more

I just love this shop! I have found intricate 1908 heating grates to use in my home here, a beautiful old door with a mirror built in, antique hardware, a 1940s glider, and even an Arts and Crafts mantle. I also used some weathered roof corbels to make a breakfast bar in my kitchen! This store is so fun to poke around in, and there are many architectural treasures to discover. Jane and Bob are so knowledgeable about their items, and a delight to chat with otherwise. read more

Liars and horrible business integrity. This must be shared so you can realized how dispicable their business practices are.... I purchased a couple of hard plaster urns that I saw on the website and they were packaged by Architectural Artifacts and shipped via FedEx, and arrived completely shattered. The cost was $320 with shipping. I called Architectural Artifacts and alerted them of the damage and requested they credit by credit card, but they said they had to go through the claim process with FedEx before they were willing to issue a credit. Per the request of owner Jane Cairl, I took photos of the damaged urns and emailed them to her so she could include them in the claim to FedEx. She received the photos and assured me that the claim was in process with FedEx and it would be no more than a month for resolution. I gritted my teeth and waited, but regularly made a number of appeals that they issue the customer credit and not let me suffer the consequences of their poor packaging and FedEx breaking them, but they refused. I issued a dispute with my credit card company as well. 5 weeks after the claim was allegedly issued to FedEx, I wasn't getting a timely response to my email inquiries to Architectural Artifacts, which didn't surprise me since they were out no $$ and didn't have any motivation to be responsive. I even requested the claim number from them so I could follow up with FedEx, but they didn't reply. Finally, this morning I called FedEx and gave them the original shipping number for the package and they looked it up and said that NO CLAIM WAS EVER OPENED ON THIS SHIPMENT. I thought you gotta be kidding me...how do business owners that are consciously dishonest and have no integrity even stay in business. This was a disgusting and nauseating experience. STAY CLEAR OF BUYING ANYTHING FROM THESE LIARS!!!!! read more

Avoid this place. I contacted Architectural Artifacts about removing and buying items in a home I recently purchased. They were also going to work on buying a few pieces for me. Their communication skills were definitely lacking. I attempted to contact them via email and phone several times to find out the exact plan after I met with them. They were rude and constantly telling me conflicting stories. They made many promises they did not keep. I delayed projects in my home due to them which cost me both time and money. Bob and Jane Cairl do not respect their clients or people in general. They seemed like genuinely nice people when I first met them, but do not be deceived! Stay away at all cost! read more
