I used to love this place, but somehow this establishment like most have lost their way. I arrived on a Saturday around 2:19. I ordered the hot dog special. They weren't overly busy and the service was great. It took 26 minutes to get my food. To my surprise they had done away with the battered crispy fries and switched to run of the mill crinkled cut fries. Never get rid of a great product no matter the cost! Everything here is just O.K. in my book. Hot dogs are simple, decent flavor, wish the chili and slaw were a bit more robust... the fries I've had the last couple of times I visited were not crispy enough for my liking. They do have one big time standout though, and that is their fried pickle chips. Man are they good. Do not shy away from ordering them, especially at the cheap prices this place offers on everything! The building itself has seen better days, but really for the price you are paying, it would be hard to find a lot better food wise. I remember when you could get the food you ordered. Sadly, no longer. I ordered a cheeseburger with chili, cold slaw, and mustard. I got a cheeseburger with just enough chili to feed a housefly, no mustard and no cold slaw. My wife ordered a hotdog with cold slaw, onions, and chili. It has a limited menu - sandwiches, salads, a Hamburger Steak Plate, a Fish Plate, the usually sides, and milk shakes. I went there to try the hot dog, which someone told me was pretty good. Hamburger was cooked perfectly and tasted good, hotdog all the way (toppings perfect) was excellent, and fries were fine. Service was outstanding--very nice, helpful server who checked on me regularly. Price was about right. But a warning: if you are a snowflake of the environmentalist or anti-gun ilk, prepare to have your delicate sensitivities assaulted, for they use a lot of paper--your food will arrive wrapped in it--and the establishment is heavily decorated with pro-gun trappings (see photos). I have also had their cheeseburgers which are pretty good, but its their dogs that keep me coming back. And for the price? How can you beat that?! Archdale Soda Shop is one of the greatest disappointments I've experienced this year. The best I can say for it is the service was decent. The restaurant has been family-owned since 1948, and you can tell that they still pride themselves in family service. The food, on the other hand, was terrible. I had a hotdog with ketchup and onions, and Holly had a cheeseburger with ketchup. Both of us agreed that both were the worst we had ever had. In short, the food is cheap. I can't imagine where they get their food, because frozen Great Value food tastes higher quality than what we were served, right down to the crinkle-cut fries. "Soda shop" is a misnomer. The coke they served Holly came from a can, not from a fountain. When I asked for a Cheerwine, the waitress said they were out. How can a North Carolina "soda shop" ever run out of Cheerwine? The only passable item we consumed was a strawberry shake - strawberry because it was the only flavor ice cream this "soda shop" had on hand. Avoid the Archdale Soda Shop at all costs. read more

From the moment I entered this establishment I was treated poorly. I should have left when I was ignored by every staff member of this restaurant. Finally, after some arguing over who would take my order, a heavyset, bleach-blonde girl grumpily took my order. She then short changed me five dollars. FIVE. I am fairly sure this was not an accident. As for the food, it is no better than what you can get at any school cafeteria. I know this is no fault of the cooks.
