Westerly Fitness is one of my favorite gyms I've been to. Maybe it's because I associate it with vacation, but it's objectively a fantastic gym. To start, they offer short term passes at really reasonable rates. Even better, no cumbersome process to start-- just sign a waiver, pay, and you're on your way. The man in the front was kind, efficient and welcoming. Secondly, the equipment. This gym has well maintained, new equipment. It's spacious and immaculately clean. The members are kind and respectful. The gym is bustling but not full. No waiting for machines! This is my annual gym retreat and I'll be back for sure.

I've trained for a long time and respect gym etiquette, and I would have had no issue correcting it or accepting a warning. When the fee was brought up, I simply asked to see the evidence so I could understand what happened and make sure it didn't happen again. My intention was to learn from it, not argue. My concern was never with the policy itself, but with how the situation was handled. When I asked about the fee and whether a warning could be given, the interaction became argumentative, so I chose to walk away. At that point, the situation escalated when the owner yelled profanity across the gym and then approached me directly in front of other members. That response is what made the experience feel unprofessional and uncomfortable. I respect that gyms enforce standards and maintain order. I simply believe situations like this can be handled with a higher level of professionalism.

Interestingly I didn't find a lot of the same equipment my home Y has but still got in a good workout. I wanted to respond to commenters who say that people are on their phones while using equipment. Many of us are using apps to track our workouts: I use one called Strong. When I claim the machine I take 30 seconds to find the weight and reps I last did so I know how to adjust the weight stack, after I exercise I enter that day's weight and number of reps and sets. It no doubt looks like I'm screwing around on my phone but it's part of my workout. It also provides a rest timer between sets so I might be looking at my phone to check that too. If I'm going to respond to a text or check IG, I move to a bench and leave the equipment available. I suspect many others are using apps to track their workout. Anyway, great YMCA!

The instructors crank up the heat during yoga classes that are not designated at heated classes. There is no way to tell which classes will be heated ahead of time and there is no way to email the center to ask questions about the classes because the online "contact us" form on the website is designed so you can't read what you are writing. The people at the desk don't know anything about the classes. The new online calendar is difficult to even find classes and there is no longer a printable class schedule. Not so zen lately. Hope it gets better!

There are multiple highly skilled black belts who are actively involved in teaching, and the level of technical detail and attention given to students is impressive. As a woman, feeling comfortable and respected in a martial arts environment is very important to me, and this gym absolutely delivers. The atmosphere is welcoming, supportive, and focused on learning real, practical self-defense skills. The instructors take the time to ensure students understand techniques properly, and safety and discipline are clearly a priority. The culture here is very positive -- everyone is friendly, helpful, and genuinely interested in improving together. Whether you are a beginner or experienced practitioner, you feel encouraged and challenged in the best way. They also have a fantastic kids program that emphasizes confidence, respect, and strong fundamentals in a structured environment. If you are looking for high-quality Brazilian Jiu Jitsu instruction with experienced black belts, a respectful atmosphere, and a strong sense of community, I highly recommend training here. I am very glad I chose this academy and look forward to continuing my training here long-term.
