The group exercise schedule is limited if you work a full time day job and are looking for Pilates or non-heated yoga. The instructors crank up the heat during yoga classes that are not designated at heated classes. There is no way to tell which classes will be heated ahead of time and there is no way to email the center to ask questions about the classes because the online "contact us" form on the website is designed so you can't read what you are writing. The people at the desk don't know anything about the classes. The new online calendar is difficult to even find classes and there is no longer a printable class schedule. Not so zen lately. Reviewing as a recent guest from San Francisco Bay Area. I found this Y to be absolutely beautiful--great views kept me on the treadmill longer--spacious, and new. Interestingly I didn't find a lot of the same equipment my home Y has but still got in a good workout. I wanted to respond to commenters who say that people are on their phones while using equipment. Many of us are using apps to track our workouts: I use one called Strong. When I claim the machine I take 30 seconds to find the weight and reps I last did so I know how to adjust the weight stack, after I exercise I enter that day's weight and number of reps and sets. It no doubt looks like I'm screwing around on my phone but it's part of my workout. It also provides a rest timer between sets so I might be looking at my phone to check that too. If I'm going to respond to a text or check IG, I move to a bench and leave the equipment available. I suspect many others are using apps to track their workout. Anyway, great YMCA! read more

So my wife and I are nationwide members and stopped by to take a shower while we traveled up through New England and their website from Apple Maps says they are open until 9 PM. We get there around 8 PM and are rudely informed that they close at 8 during the summer (what kind of sense does that even make?) and then are given no information as to other options in the area. We spent more time at dinner beforehand based on their website information and could have been there with plenty of time to spare. Please, PLEASE update your information so this doesn't happen to another family in the future. We are sorely disappointed. read more

Hard to workout with people texting on equipment I am trying to use. - the bars that attach to cable machines lie all over the floor bc no one thought a rack was necessary. - gyms half the price offer more & better hours - incredibly inefficient use of space As an ATC CSCS with a BSc in Exercise Science, I would fire whoever "designed" this gym. Many issues, biggest being a row of lockers 2 feet in front of free weights where people lift and others nearly trip to get by. Liability! read more

The facility is well maintained and meticulously clean. They offer a wide variety of programs and appear to understand their core patron's (silver sneakers and teens/ tweens crowd) needs and interests. The staff is friendly and goes out of their way to be helpful. The new gym facility on the top floor is new and fairly well equipped, bearing in mind the above noted core patron. Serious meatheads may have a few quibbles with equipment selection but it is possible to get in a solid workout with what is on hand. The downside - from 3pm on the gym is infested with kids (12-15 ) wandering aimlessly from machine to machine, many in groups of 3-4. They tie up the equipment for 20-30 mins. As another poster noted "- if texting on machines was an Olympic Sport, this gym would win Silver, right behind The Edge. Hard to workout with people texting on equipment I am trying to use." I would give it the gold - more doom scrolling happens than actual working out - if you have an actual lifting program you will do more waiting than lifting with supersets and other variations virtually impossible. Beautiful new facility, friendly staff and all new workout equipment! What could be better? Maybe their many water aerobics classes that are free with membership? Mary C. is a skilled instructor, always learning new techniques and trying to increase her knowledge of water aerobics. She makes classes fun with music, laughter while we exercise! As I always say, "Never let them see you sweat!" She is spot on and professional with her warmups, and completes each class with a full total body range of motion and stretches. It's amazing, but I'm hardly ever sore. Flexibility and balance really improve also. read more

I am so thankful for all the donations that were made and all the efforts that went into upgrading this local ymca. I have a family membership and it was getting to the point where we were debating on looking for other options. From the months of sept-nov we suspending our membership while they continued to work on rehabbing the property. I made an effort to stick out the gym and some sort of workout regiment during the summer and the beginning of the project, but It became difficult to do so when they tossed a lot of the equipment into half a basketball court worth of space. With that being said I could not be more pleased with new workout equipment and space. The machines are up to date and the space has a lot more to offer. There's a lot more about the ymca that I unfortunately do not utilize, but I plan to in the very near future. If your looking for a change in workout in the mystic area, that includes steam rooms, classes, pool and court access, this is a no brainer. Ps. Wait until you see the sunsets Cheers read more

I don't love this gym - the facility is nice but there is no sauna or steam room, it's expensive for what you get, and the hours are awful. They have different hours posted than the hours you find online. I have come to work out and they're closed more often than I can count at this point. If you like to work out later in the afternoon and evenings, this is not the gym for you. I barely use my membership because of this. read more

My Anytime Fitness membership was finally expiring and I was on the hunt for a new gym (for quite awhile actually). I am relieved to say that the search is over! Mystic YMCA is more than a gym, it is the complete fitness destination. From day care, to swimming pools, group classes, and weight rooms, the Y has it all. I'm most excited for the indoor basketball court but the sauna is a close second. They have a really friendly staff that take care of their guests and the property is easy to navigate. Their commitment to the community is distinct and they have quality programs including sports, camping, and aquatics. What more can you hope for? I was given 3 free day passes for a trial run and today I've utilized my first. I'm already sold. side note: I've definitely seen better places, of course they're out there, but their service makes this an easy 5-star review. The Y has all the essentials and more, and it's the best value you're gonna find around the area. read more

WOW! they did an amazing job with the renovations! From the front of the building driving in, it doesn't look like much, but the back side and interior is really nice. Treadmills and workout overlooking the Mystic River through giant glass windows. Staff is really friendly, plenty of parking and bathrooms are clean. Great for the kids and families. I understand many businesses are suffering due to the Covid-19 restrictions, but the Mystic YMCA has made it very difficult to cancel or suspend my membership. I am being debited $84.00 a month for a service that is closed. I've made repeated attempts to contact each of the 3 Ocean Community YMCA's, but no one has answered my calls. In this day and age, their web page should display instructions to cancel/suspend memberships, but it doesn't. Very frustrating. Poor communication with your members and poor leadership. read more

Not happy with the Mystic YMCA. I've been going for the past 3 days and they just told me that my membership expired and they can't revue my paperwork (basically 1 page) for 2 weeks and won't allow me to work out until they have time to get to it. The girl outright told me that she had too many summer camp programs to get to. So angry right now. I've been a member of the YMCA since I was a kid. Considering it has been closed for 3 months due to COVID I think they should continue to let me go while they find more people to do the paperwork. I think it's a wonderful program to have in the community. I went to the YMCA when I was in Highschool and now that I am a mother our family is enjoying the family membership they offer. The few times I have been here which is usually in the morning time I have had positive experiences. I will say though the child care hours are off, usually childcare is 8am till 12pm then the sitters come back at 4pm which really sucks due to the fact the best classes are afternoon. I wish they would expand the child care hours. Ps: the child care workers don't change diapers so they will come and get you or if your child cries for more than ten minutes. Which I had happened to me when my son wasn't cooperative lol oh motherhood what joy! I love the classes they offer adults, children and teens. With our family membership we only pay $26 for swim classes for our one years old son. I have nothing negative to say about the Ymca. Ps: they're getting a facelift so construction is happening currently. read more
