He advertises himself as someone that does deck refinishing and construction and works in the Denver area. He was one of several people we found on craigslist to do some work on our large composite deck which required some joists to be replaced and some boards replaced. He seemed competent and knowledgeable and ready to start immediately (I know, red flag right there). He asked for half up front but not having worked with him, we refused and instead agreed to pay for materials as the job progressed, and labor at the end. Another red flag when he tried to purchase the deck beams at Lowe's when we got a call from the credit department at the store indicating that his account was seriously past due. We explained that we were not using his account and would pay directly for the materials (which we did) but his credit with that store was no good. We paid $350 for deck beams and joist material which he brought to the house. That is when the real trouble began. The job required a minimum of two people because the deck beams are large and 10 feet above ground yet he was by himself. About a couple of hours after he started, we hear a loud crash and my wife sees one of the deck beams he was trying to install falling off and hitting the house! I went out there to look and saw that the stucco façade beneath the deck, which was in perfect condition, was now badly damaged with holes and pockmarks all over it (required $400 in stucco repair) and there were boards all over the place. He had also carelessly moved my gas grill on the top of the deck spilling grease all over the composite material!! I asked him what was going on and he said the job was "harder than he thought". I told him any more damage to the house and the deck was unacceptable and that he could not proceed until he had someone to assist him. He then left, abandoning his tools and the job. The next day I get a text from him indicating that he no longer wished to work on the job and that he would be by to pick up his tools. I asked him how he intended to pay for the damage, and he indicated that he would not charge for the work he did even though all he did was damage the property! I told him I would sue him for the damages if necessary and his response was "you can't sue poverty" and "I have no assets" so you are out of luck. We gave him his tools back and while we have to pay for the damage ourselves we feel fortunate we did not pay him as he asked or we would have been out of that money as well. We view this company as a scam and this individual as incompetent at best, or a fraud at worst. He managed to do a great deal of damage to our home in a very short time and callously walked off the job leaving us with damage, a mess and materials we could not use. Avoid!!!!!!!!!

We decided to get some help with replacing our bathtub, doing a new tile surround, and replacing the toilet. The final product is amazing. The tile work was very carefully done, and James consulted us with design decisions along the way that we hadn't considered. He offered his opinion based on other bathrooms he'd done and kept us updated on progress and next steps. We definitely plan to use James again for some future projects.
