I have passed by this place so many times, so I was happy that I finally had a chance to check them out. The Redhot Ranch side is a no frills industrial design. And they are smashburgers, which I didn't know ahead of time and wish I did as I would have skipped it. Nothing says a good burger like smashing the ever lovin' crap out of it and getting rid if all the flavor, slapping a couple slices of cheese on it and whatever toppings you want to disguise the flavor of the meat. It was a messy burger. The fries were okay as well. Nothing to really say that I'm itching to go back. With so many burger shops around, skip this one.

They also have a bakery, though I didn't pick anything up from there. There's lots of soups, too, which I'll probably pick up if I visit again. My theory was that they hoped the ample ice would eventually dilute the drink down for takeaway. You may be wondering why the 13 years. First off, I live in Texas and am vacationing in the Chicagoland area for my niece's wedding. Second, while I've been to Chicago several times between now and 2013, I went to other places when I felt a gnawing craving for beef. Because I'm staying close by, my cousin thought we should check this place out. I'm no stranger to Portillo's or even the beef, which I consider the best sandwich in the entire universe. That said, I came here confident I would have another epic experience at one of The Windy City's famous exports. Man, I was right. I ended a day in which my way-too-early flight from Houston to Chicago was delayed over two hours with the No. 1 meal -- a regular beef with fries and a drink -- and it undoubtedly hit the spot. The beef was done dipped, hot and sweet, the purported traditional way to order the sandwich. While Houston has at least four Portillo's locations, I must say that they can't beat the OG in its birthplace.

How is a burger, Italian beef and cheese fries almost $30??? The fries come out lukewarm, soggy and tastes like freezer burn. The burgers are overcooked and tiny. The beef quality in the Italian beef is just not there. My recent experience at the Skokie location was quite poor. Long story, but there was an ordering and gift card mishap. And instead of honoring what they promised or just making things right, the manager made passive aggressive comments. I didn't need an apology which I didn't get anyway, but I sure as heck did not deserve the attitude by the manager. All the other workers were kind and professional. Only the manager on duty was rude. Given the price point, quality and poor service. You have lost a long time loyal customer. And your rewards program is in desperate need of an overhaul.

The hot dog was pretty good, fries (Crinkle cut) were also good. Place was pretty crowded. We sat at a table of 4, and our backs were right on top of the person in back of us. Also, service was slow, considering it was just a hot dog, but like I said, it was busy. I ordered from the counter and service was pretty quick. The place was very lively and quite busy on a Sunday morning. Anyway, so I saw someone else get the chicken and waffles, and I said, I gots to get me some of those. So I did. So the donuts were 5 stars easily. Each one was great. The coconut and the pistachio donuts were not very big, but still an average sized donut. The crème brûlée was bigger. The chicken and waffles consisted of 2 rather large fried chicken tenders on a fairly big waffle. There was a light syrup coating the chicken. Very large portion for $13. My only complaint was it tasted like the chicken was fried in old oil that perhaps needed to be changed. I'm sure they go through a lot of fried chicken, fried potatoes and other fried fishes, but the chicken was darker than it should be and tasted like old oil. I noticed another person next to me who got fried potatoes, and they too, were very dark. Still, the chicken was good, and I consider this to be minor and maybe doesn't happen on a less busy day. I would go back if I'm in the Niles/Skokie area again, because there are other donuts and breakfast items I'd like to try. The price is very reasonable for the portions you get.
