Truong went over each one and explained to me what I was looking at, then went over the treatment plan with me.

No business is perfect, but when you have a cancerous culture that does not cherish the client relationship it shows. This is an example of just that, at least the front of house. The reality is the actual work of dentistry is fine in this establishment. It's the admin, front desk, customer service, lack of availability, and difficulty of being a client that leaves a lot to be had. Not to mention when or if you fire them how difficult they will be when it comes to moving your dental records to your next dentist. It was very frustrating to be a patient at times given that this is the way they choose to do business. My wife and I were patients since we moved to Austin in 2017. The quality of the dental work is fine. The front of office is a 1 out of 10 at its worst and a 5 out of 10 on average. I am sure the practice will have some response that will paint us as unreasonable clients, but here are my key issues: 1. If your teen has an appointment (simple cleaning) , they will not see them unless the parent is present, we had an issue where my wife was single parenting for the week while I was on a business trip and found out after she had dropped my son off for his appointment and took my other son to school that this was their policy. Fair enough, except for the fact that by the time my wife got back, 15 minutes late, they canceled his appointment, for a policy they enforced and communicated after the fact. The biggest issue was not the policy, but how the staff treated my wife through this situation, and the fact that when my wife alerted the dentist to the incident she sided with her staff and never got back to my wife regarding the incident. Not acceptable for any business owner. 2. My dentist (Dr Heggen) only works 2 days a week, so if you have any near term issues, IE major tooth pain, you may have to wait weeks , like 4 or 5 to get in to see the dentist, not great if you can't chew or have major tooth pain. In my situation, I had a filling put in in March by my dentist that was hurting for months that they tried to adjust and was still off, and I had major issues as the pain increased. I tried to schedule to have it looked at given they had done the work, however had major issues getting in to see my dentist given the lack of availability, regardless of the fact that I could only chew in one side of my mouth. Not great. 3. When you leave they will refuse to send your actual digital records to your new dentist , isn't it 2024????? This will cause your next dentist to either have them sent via snail mail or you will have to physically pick them up yourself. Also they will not release records to your new dentist, just to you. It's completely ridiculous. Also new dentist will have to more than likely do an entire set of new XRays since paper XRays are not as clear as the digital real ones. This was absurd, but not off brand for the behavior we experienced which caused us to leave. 4. Lastly, even after being a patient for 7 years they mispronounced my wife's name. A small issue but again consistently on brand for why this place is not great. A side note I went to my new dentist and had the opposite experience with front of house. Friendly, proactive, super nice, went out of their way to make things easy. Reminded me what really good service and a great client experience is supposed to be.

Erica, my hygienist, educated me on my gum health, and noticed signs of wear on my teeth due to clenching; which I imagine I do when I'm sleeping. Erica took photos of each tooth, measured my gums, and validated that my oral hygiene practices at home are on par. During my examination, we saw signs of decay, and there was enough time in the schedule for me to start the process of placing a crown on my tooth. From the moment Dr. James numbed me to the moment my temporary crown was placed, I was treated with the utmost care. The team remembered my son, who visited not too long ago, and were as joyful and relatable as can be. They even offered me a cozy blanket during my procedure! I mean, who does that? Pecan Park Family Dentistry does! All in all, though it was my first time at their practice, I was made to feel like family. Like I was being taken care of by my girlfriends, and I am beyond grateful to have crossed paths with them!

After more than 10 years with this practice, I'm incredibly disappointed to be writing this…read more I'm autistic, and like many neurodivergent people, I struggle with scheduling and making it to appointments. I want to be clear: I am already deeply aware of this, and I feel embarrassed and awful when it happens. Nothing feels worse than standing at the garage door with my keys in hand, frozen, shaking, overwhelmed, and filled with guilt. This isn't carelessness or laziness, it's something I actively work to manage. I also understand that missed appointments affect a business, and I am willing to accept financial penalties when appropriate. I appreciate that Pecan Park Dental has waived some missed appointment fees for me in the past. However, my most recent experience felt shaming and dismissive of my disability, and I left in tears. The morning of a scheduled appointment, I was called and told my insurance would not cover the visit because I had hit my maximum. I was told I would need to pay $540 out of pocket for a routine cleaning. I could not afford that and chose to reschedule for a future date when my insurance would cover it. At that time, I was told I would still be charged a $100 late cancellation fee, even though this cost was only communicated to me the morning of the appointment. When I returned months later for the rescheduled visit, I tried to explain that this situation resulted from an insurance and communication issue. Instead of working with me, I was repeatedly pressured in the waiting room to pay the $100 fee. I explained multiple times that I did not have the money that day. I was asked for credit card information over and over, in front of my daughter and other patients. It was humiliating. I ended up crying in the office while still being asked for payment. When I later tried to explain the situation, I was sent a chart of my missed appointments. It felt less like an attempt to understand and more like an effort to reinforce guilt. That approach isn't helpful, it adds to the shame and makes it even harder to access care. Experiences like this are exactly why many neurodivergent people avoid healthcare altogether. It becomes easier to avoid appointments than to face anxiety, shame, and financial penalties. I don't believe this is about bad intent, but it reflects a system that prioritizes policies and revenue over patient-centered care and basic compassion. After more than a decade as a loyal patient, and bringing multiple family members to this practice, I expected more understanding and professionalism. Because of this experience, I will be moving my care, along with my family's care, to a different provider. I hope this practice reflects on how it communicates with and supports patients, especially those with anxiety, autism, or other neurodivergent needs. No patient should be made to feel this way while seeking care
