((4.75 stars)) if you're in NoLita, have time, and in need of well-made coffee, then stop by % Arabica. i have been here a few times in the past and more often recently...it really depends on if i have things to do that involve traversing Prince Street. the airy coffee shop lets in a lot of natural light and has good lighting inside to keep the interior vibe bright, energetic, but not frenetic. the space exudes a clean modern aesthetic--off-white plus warm woods. a really good amount of seating in the forms of a large sofa area as well as the stools at the front windows. while the Arabica is often busy, the interior has that neat organized energy even with people milling about waiting for their coffee. while they do serve a small variety of baked items like croissants and brownies....the star is the menu of finely crafted coffee drinks. if you enjoy the flavor of coffee, order an espresso or Americano--the coffee doesn't miss. i believe it's a medium roast of Brazilian and Ethiopian coffee beans, but i think they have different bean choices or two if you prefer a different roast/blend. the Americanos, iced Americanos and espressos have a really satisfying flavorful coffee --kinda dark chocolatey, somewhat nutty, a low acidity, and almost a natural sweetness. really good stuff. the baristas here do not rush coffee drinks and that is a big reason why the drinks are consistently well-made beyond the talent of the staff. even when there is no line to the order counter, you'll often have a little wait because typically people sitting or standing around are all waiting for their orders. but the wait is worth it. trust. i will say the the folks typically taking orders feel a bit frosty and not authentic in interactions--just my read on the vibe. it's always a friendly veneer not a deep warmth especially if you have questions about the coffee roast or blend...maybe it's because lack of knowledge but often times it feels like they're distracted. but in their defense, everyone behind the counter seems to be doing 8 million things beyond a singular role which is a great and all, but I feel like this is why when i order let's say an "iced Americano"--the order will be inputted as a "hot Americano" as this happened the last time i was here. when i pointed this out, it still took a bit of time for my order to get corrected mainly because the counter person seemed to be doing too much or is tasked with doing too much. again, not a big deal but this is not the first time this happened. nonetheless, eventually i got my iced Americano and all was good. another snag ate % Arabica is the coffee condiment area. it's small and neatly arranged, but it ends up getting too crowded with people taking an exorbitant amount of time lallygagging while adding simple syrup or a lid to their coffees or the area is just too cramped because often the line to order snakes across this area which is only a couple of feet away. it's not the greatest placement for the condiments or lids imo. this can be (not always) be fairly frustrating when the shop is busy and you've already waited for you coffee and now you have to wait for someone to lacksadaisically pout a lid on their coffee, add sugar, their drink, etc. these are not reasons to avoid % Arabica, but to temper expectations when it comes to when it's busy or you want some down-to-earth hospitality along with your coffee. all that said, this is must for your morning or afternoon caffeine fix when you want a drink that is carefully made and represents that in the pleasant flavor of their coffee. read more

Some really solid coffee in New York. It's a great spot for a pick-me-up. I got an iced Kyoto Latte and my friend got a hot Americano. My palette isn't delicate enough to pick apart the tasting notes of the beans, but it went down smooth and it wasn't too sweet either. The interior was lively, service was quick. The coffee was really good! I didn't add any sweetener to my latte, but I was surprised by how naturally sweet it was- subtle, not overpowering. White mocha was a lil too sweet for me but if you like the sweet you'd love it. Their house blend has goji and chocolate notes, which I loved, and I ended up buying a bag of their beans. One downside was the seating area. Many of the fabric seats looked dirty, which made me hesitant to sit down. We happened to stop by during an event, where they had music and sample sips. I have an espresso machine at home and try not to buy simple drinks I can replicate at home. However, when I tried a sip of their Iced Americano, I knew this would be the only place I'd buy an Americano outside. It was the best I've ever had. I ordered an Iced Kyoto Latte. This spot was fairly busy when I came in around 11 am, with most folks taking their coffees to go but a few remaining to do some work. The service was quick despite there being a bit of a line. I was also starving and decided to treat myself to a croissant which was crispy, light, airy - everything you could want in a croissant. Prices are not wallet friendly but are standard for the area. I love the simplicity of their decor. It makes you focus more on the coffee, which has been really good. I keep wanting to try the other coffees but keep defaulting to the Kyoto latte, which I love and also seems to be a big crowd favorite. The interior attempts to mimc the bright, almost sterile white that other international locations have. However, it unfortunately has the opposite effect and highlights the dirt that's tracked in from the streets of New York. There were flies buzzing around in the seating area as well. The coffee itself is not bad. There is something for everyone, and each of their custom drinks have differing levels of sweetness. While there are a plethora of artisanal coffee shops in LES, %Arabica offers coffee that you won't find anywhere else such as their signature Kyoto Latte. My friend and I arrived on an early Saturday afternoon and it was already crowded. All the sofa seats and comfy stools were occupied leaving my friend and I to people watch on the high seats facing the street. The modern minimalist backdrop was the perfect set for a girl's gossip session. While my friend saved us some seats, I got on a short line that moved fast. Service is friendly and quick. Thankfully we came earlier because the line got longer later in the day. Taste-wise, both lattes were a bit sweeter than our preference but we could still taste the nutty and floral notes of the espresso. The iced Kyoto Latte was sweeter but was more refreshing compared to the cozy aromatic notes of the hot latte. These lattes are definitely different from what is offered at other cafes and justifies the high price tag. The Kyoto Latte satisfied my outside coffee craving and I wanna come back and try the dark latte. There is also the original Brooklyn location which I wouldn't mind going to. Finally! A location in Manhattan! % Arabica has been on my radar since they opened in DUMBO. As I walked to the train from a nearby workout studio, I was pleasantly surprised to come across % Arabica, opening only a few weeks ago on Prince just west of Bowery. While there was a short line both before and after me, the baristas and cashiers were quick to assist yet didn't make anyone feel rushed. I got my regular at any coffeeshop: iced oat milk latte. The espresso was smooth and the balance of oat milk was perfect, making for a slightly darker latte (it's perfect for me, anyway). They've got a few pastries, but also a soft serve machine for affogatos (espresso and ice cream)! I wish more places had this lol. It wasn't working at the time of my visit, but I'd definitely come back for that if I was nearby, as it's one of my favorite simple treats. I came on a Friday morning around 11am so I was able to get a seat but it definitely gets busy with people working on their laptops or just hanging out. Ordered the matcha latte and I had such high hopes after reading all the reviews and knowing this is a popular Japanese coffee shop with locations all around the world. But I would give the matcha latte a 7/10 - since there was settling at the bottom meaning it wasn't whisked properly or long enough. Otherwise, it was earthy and comes unsweetened but they have sugar and simple syrup on hand for you to sweeten your drinks. A bit pricey though at $7-8 for a 12oz matcha latte with almond milk. I know others have had more positive experiences with the matcha from here so I just hope it was a one-off thing with mine. Maybe I'll come back to try their coffee (since it's what they're most known for) but I would reconsider getting a matcha here. read more
