Saved by Ehrhardt Brothers Quality Plumbing! (West of Baltimore, a.k.a ColumbiaPlumber)…read more Sunday evening, our water felt less hot than usual. Monday, it was only as warm as we keep the house, and only as much water as there is in the pipes! Our gas water-heater failed! Bad timing, too. Last week was what Chicago calls Fools'-Spring ... around 70°. But this week was back to Second-Winter, 30° (Mar 2026). And the next warm days, which Chicago calls the "Spring-of-Deception", is still ten days away. There was water leaking from the heater. This is considered the calm before the 50-gallon tsunami. If this is home-remedy advice, First call a friend who has successfully navigated this problem. Next shut off the gas and then the pilot. Next shut off the water inlet. Your friend will have at least one plumber to recommend. (They will enjoy that...) If your garden hose isn't frozen to the spigot, drain the water tank. If frozen, spend a sleepless night with the 24/7 plumber's number on speed-dial. We chose #2.  We made it through the night. Two of our friend's recommendations were small-businesses, our preference, and we asked all three for quotes and availability. Ehrhardt was ready to offer a price based on our descriptions and photos, of course with caveats for anything unexpected. I considered their bid to be a pretty-penny, but I'll say it was less than our friend's expectation, and more than our friend in Cleveland expected. A fair price. They came the next morning, and it might have been sooner if we had called right away. We cleared a path for them through the house, and they had the water heater replaced in 90min. Impressive. We went out for St. Pat's. But what we should have done was what they told us: check the pilot light for about 30min, and test the hot water after 60 to 90min. We came home to cold water. I'll admit some grumpiness. We called in the morning, and they came back in a jiffy (our apologies to everyone else who had appointments that day). In 30min, they figured it out: a faulty pilot in the new, just-unboxed water heater. They had a replacement part over-nighted. The next morning, in 30min, done. This time we did as told: checked the pilot after 20min (and nervously, an extra time again after that). Still lit! The second time we checked, the hot water outlet was noticeable warm. By 60min, hot water from the faucets! By 90min, much to relief of nearly everyone i know, a piping hot shower. AAAAAHHH :-) Ok, so how does three visits equal 5-stars! The hardest question answered first: Because the problem was the manufacturer's fault, and Ehrhardt handled it flawlessly: Excellent communication by Ehrhardt, priority attention to our problem, no excuses, just fast resolution. Great service staff, from the office to my house. Fair price. I admit that I'm writing this in the after-glow of that hot shower. This could be the start of a beautiful situationship.

Four years ago, they replaced my water pressure tank and several failing fittings, and installed a…read morereverse osmosis (RO) system. Given the cost of this work, I expected durable materials, proactive recommendations, and transparent guidance. Unfortunately, both experiences have left me disappointed -- and more importantly, concerned about trust. Regarding the pressure tank: during installation, their team very likely observed an older, visibly corroded metal well intake pipe that had likely been in place for nearly 20 years under prior ownership. Fast forward to today -- I noticed heavy white corrosion on the 4.5-year-old brass fitting and an active water leak. Given the risk of catastrophic failure, I called for urgent service. To their credit, they arrived within two hours, which I appreciated. However, I was then told the metal pipework was not covered under the tank warranty and that it should be replaced with stainless steel -- which they acknowledged would last longer and resist corrosion better than the prior installation -- at a cost of $1,400. When a contractor identifies visibly corroded infrastructure during an install, I expect clear risk disclosure and upgrade options at that time -- not four years later when failure is imminent and the homeowner has little choice. Now to the RO system: at installation, I was told the filters were widely available commercially and easy to replace. I later learned the filters are proprietary and only sold through water system companies -- not readily available via retail as originally represented. That distinction materially affects long-term cost and flexibility. Years later, I called to ask how to sanitize the RO system myself. I was told it's something only they can do and that they would handle sanitization when delivering the next set of filters (rather than shipping them), which I accepted. After the technician sanitized the lines, he casually told me, "You know you can sanitize the lines yourself." That is exactly what I had asked about over the phone. I relied on their guidance, only to hear the opposite in person. For tradespeople working inside a home -- especially on critical water infrastructure -- trust and clarity are foundational. When guidance changes, material limitations aren't disclosed up front, or foreseeable corrosion isn't proactively addressed, it raises concerns beyond just cost. While I appreciate the prompt emergency response, the combination of reactive fixes, proprietary product limitations, and inconsistent communication has made this an unsatisfactory experience overall.

The next day Doug came by with a camera and showed us that there were tree roots in the pipe. He was able to schedule service for the next day. So far so good. The team came out the next morning and said that if everything went smoothly they would be done by about 2:30. Well, everything did not go smoothly. They dug up our front yard and said that there was nothing wrong with the pipe where Doug had told them to dig. They sat around for an hour, waiting for Doug to get back to them. When he did, they were told that the clog was much farther away from the house than where they dug and had to keep digging closer to the sewer clean out. They did not finish until 9:00pm. The problem is that while they spent half the day digging in the wrong spot, they damaged bushes and knocked over a tree that were nowhere near the clog. I filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau. In their response, they said that the pipe took an unexpected turn. As you can see from the attached pictures, the pipe was perfectly straight; Doug and the team just miscommunicated about the location to dig. I know that in this kind of a job, damage to the landscape is unavoidable, and they are not responsible for the unavoidable damage, but because of their miscommunication, there was a great deal of avoidable damage. I have asked them to reimburse me for the portion of the landscaping that they should not have damaged, and they have refused. I have not asked for a refund of my fee as they did the work they were supposed to, nor have I asked for them to pay for all my landscaping. I have merely asked them to pay for the damage that was caused by their mistakes. They have refused.

I had an emergency, Brian was unavailable, but he had another experienced skilled plumber, Rob, out the same day to assess. An old cast iron sewage pipe cracked and was leaking into my basement and had to be replaced along with connections to upstairs toilets. The next day, Rob and Jaykri came to my rescue. They did the job under their own cost proposal and at a significantly lower price than a big-name competitor's proposal. Brian moved a schedule around to fit me in and got the job done in 1 day. (The other company could not even start until 3 days later) Rob and Jaykri even fixed a couple other odd plumbing issues (shower cartridges, broken valve knobs, etc.) while they were at my house. The Fluid Plumbing & Heating team were knowledgeable, professional, polite, and cleaned up after themselves. No one ever wants to need a plumber, but I am so happy to have them in my saved contacts. Added they work on boilers, radiators, and radiant floor heat, so sadly I am sure I will need them in the future.

But Brian O'Connor treated my little repair like it was the most important job on his schedule. That told me everything I needed to know about how this company operates. So when I discovered a leak in my hot water heater, there was only one call to make. Brian picked up the phone after hours -- let that sink in -- and had Rob at my house first thing the next morning. No waiting around for days, no runaround, no voicemail abyss. Just real people who genuinely care about their customers. Rob and his apprentice arrived on time, were thoroughly professional, and took the time to explain every step of the process so I understood exactly what was happening and why. I want to give a special shoutout to Rob's apprentice -- this young professional is just starting out in his career, and if he's any indication of the caliber of people Fluid brings on board, this company's future is incredibly bright. As Rob put it, I'm not just a customer now -- I'm family. And honestly? That's exactly how they made me feel from day one. From a tiny toilet fix to a hot water heater emergency, Fluid Plumbing & Heating has earned my complete trust and loyalty. If you're looking for a plumbing company that treats every job -- big or small -- with the same level of care and professionalism, look no further. Call Brian. You'll thank yourself later.
