This review is far overdue - Ilyas has rescued me more than a few times over the past 7-8 years... from washer then drier then fridge then freezer (and freezer, and freezer - finally new fridge and freezer) then range hood then stove/oven then disposal - I'm not exaggerating, sadly! I am so grateful to Ilyas, and his company Appliance Guy Marin! As a hot yoga teacher who relies on a washing machine about 5 times a day, I finally invested in a nice washer dryer. The team who installed it did not know what they were doing, and that the washer needed a significant number of stabilizing bolts removed before the install. Ilyas answered the phone, said he'd be here first thing the next day! He arrived, immediately identified the problem with the washer and fixed it, adjusted the dryer, gave me some additional tips on how to avoid mold, and explained it would be costly to repair the washer if I didn't make sure it dried properly. Appliance Guy service tech came out to replace a light bulb in a built-in microwave. I was supplying the bulb so only thing I needed was for the tech to pull out the microwave about 18" to access the old bulb, remove it & put in the new bulb. A service tech from a different company had been out the week before to replace bad hinges & change out the light bulb but he didn't have the right bulb so he just replaced the hinges. Pulling out the microwave (only the microwave -- not the entire oven/microwave assembly) was a one-man job & he had no problem doing it. But he couldn't come back for weeks so I called Appliance Guy instead to come sooner. Big mistake!! Appliance Guy tech arrived, started to pull out the entire oven/microwave assembly & said it was too heavy so it was a 2-man job. Therefore I would have to pay $95 for his visit that day & another $125 to have 2 guys come back another time to replace the bulb. I said it was not a 2-man job as previous repair tech did it easily himself. Tech guy refused to back down, called the owner who threatened to sue me if I didn't pay the $95. I said no way & sent owner a YouTube video showing the exact same repair to the exact same model with 1 guy doing it all. Too bad his tech didn't know what he was doing. As demonstrated by the fact that he never turned off the power to the microwave before he started pulling it & the oven out. Lucky he wasn't electrocuted!! read more

Awful, incompetent, lazy, and borderline criminal No water coming into my dishwasher Puts his finger in the drain and twists. Due to the delay-timer being set, we couldn't assure his fix worked. Dishwasher still didn't receive water once started. I am out $120.00 He misdiagnosed, he was too lazy to take the bottom panel off and look what the problem was. Once I told him the problem wasn't fixed, he told me he was positive to what the problem was. He ordered a $10.00 drain hose and charged me $129.00. That's a 1200% markup. He didn't supply me his receipt of purchase. Sent his repairman to put it in. It was the wrong hose. The second misdiagnosis because he's too lazy or incompetent to take the bottom panel off and look what the problem was. Then ordered an intake hose $3.00 and charged me $89.00. That's a 2800% markup. He didn't supply me his receipt of purchase. Total cost $550.00 to fix a $900.00 dishwasher. All the Appliance Guy had to do, was bend down, open the bottom panel, look which hose had a hole in it, purchase it with a nominal up-charge and replace. Two misdiagnoses, up-charges of over 2000%, and three visits. The Appliance Guy cannot diagnose, is lazy, a cheat, and fleeces. Trusted we would have an honest experienced employee to fix our washing machine. Employee arrived and after an hour my husband asked what the problem was. Employee said he needed to remove the drum but never did it before so had no idea. A quick call to office, voice mail full, another call ten minutes later and owner picks up. Asked us how we know it is the drum? Well, you're employee said so. Oh, well I'll get you a price on that. $125 service call for absolutely nothing. Several days later no call. This was who was sent by my landlord to fix my broken heater this past winter. They ended up replacing it. If I could tell people one thing it would be RUN THE OTHER WAY. This guy put a new heater in my condo. He is very friendly and seems knowledgeable. He is not. He's a quick buck Charlie. He preys on people who are desperate and has no problem telling lies and half truths right to your face. After telling my landlord that the heater needed replacing and telling him he had one just the right size in stock, he installed a new heater in my condo. Big mistake, he didn't have it in stock, he did not even try to find the correct type of heater to match the existing system. My old heater was installed between the floors in my condo. He installed the new heater in my hall coat closet and cut in new ducting to connect to the existing systems ducting. He left huge holes in my ceiling in that closet. Then cut 2 other access holes in my hall, covered 1 with a grill, just left the other open with studs and nails right there. , Has left many other little holes, dents etc. I have a hole in my hall closet where he put the replacement unit at. It is open into the area between my 1st and 2nd stories. There was no attempt to close the walls or floors back up. Anything that can get in like bugs or vermin now have an easy way into my home. He cut an access hole in my ceiling to add ductwork to connect the new system to the old system. When I complained, and said he needed to come back and finish up the drywall repairs and holes left, he came back 1 time when I was at work, left tools and debris behind and then never responded to any calls or messages again. Not once has he responded to any messages left. The only positives are: 1. I have a heater working again in my condo when it was below freezing outside. 2. He was fast. I am positives he got no permits, did not follow state laws regarding HVAC installation and repair. And I will be having the system inspected and verified for safe use before using again. I am warning everyone I know about this quack. He might be ok for quick repair work but do not allow him to any replacement work without a 2nd option and then be very careful he does what he says he will. Hold your payment at least half and pay by credit card so you have recourse. So if there are problems like I am having at least you can maybe get a response from him. Good luck. read more

My dryer stopped heating just over a week ago so I called a competitor based on a quick Google search. I made an appointment to have them come out today, 1 week in advance. Yesterday, the day before my appointment, I called back to verify my appointment. I was told everything was all set. This morning, I received a call 1 hour before my window of time informing me that the technician was on vacation and that they had no one to send. I have been sitting on a week's worth of laundry because of the expectation they set, and I believe it was very unprofessional of this company to cancel on me at the last minute. Fortunately, Ilyas at Appliance Guy in San Rafael came out on zero notice and fixed my problem in 30 minutes on his day off. Ilyas is very professional, knowledgable and reasonably priced. He is a standout example of a stellar work ethic and dedication to his craft. I wish more small business owners worked and conducted themselves like Ilyas. In 40 years of working with contractors "Appliance Guy" of San Rafael rates at the top of my list of bad contractors. In my opinion they are "5 star awful." Although I have no expertise in appliance installation and repair, I have an opinion as a customer, based upon an installation this company, or an affiliate, did in my home. They installed 2 built-in appliances, but did not secure them to the cabinetry, did not level them, etc. As far as plumbing and electric, they just shoved the wires behind the cabinets, but didn't secure them. When I discovered these and other items/issues the installer said they were not required or necessary - which is contrary to the printed installation manuals that came with the appliances came with. Any parts they did not use they took with them, so I ended up having to buy new ones. I will never let these people work here again because, in my opinion, they did not do the job they were hired to do and lied when questioned about it. read more

My refrigerator/freezer suddenly sounded as if a jet was taking off. I first called Sears as that is where I bought the frig. They were happy to help..... In 6 days..... I looked online and read the YELP reviews for The Appliance Guy and the good reviews outweighed the negative ones. I called Ilyas and within 1 hr. He and his partner were here fixing my frig. They were both very pleasant, polite, efficient and thorough. It turned out it was my thermostat. They defrosted, cleaned up after themselves and fixed the problem, I have a year warranty which gave me peace of mind. RESPONSE AFTER BUSINESS OWNER REPLY: The reply from business owner is not true. I was there on the first visit. We called because the dishwasher would run but we could not hear water/dishes obviously not clean after cycle completed. He poked his fingers around the drain and then said it was the control panel which would've been costly but he was going to get an estimate for the part. At the same time my husband was going to check warranty information as well as with GE. After business owner left, the machine turned on and we realized that with everybody touching the control panel it was put on timer delay. Then he and my husband spoke and a hose was ordered. At that point we agreed to continue with the repair since it was not the control panel and would be a less expensive fix. I never said I wanted a new dishwasher! The business owners account of what happened is completely not true and they did not spend five hours in total. As a matter of fact the machine was not seated back correctly and constantly tilts forward like it's going to fall! My assessment after reading through other reviews is that this is their way of doing business - bringing in more revenue at the expense of the customers and people in the community. I have accepted the fact that we are out the cost for labor because of our poor choice in vendor selection. Actually, when they brought the wrong part out on the second visit we should have called someone else. Over the phone the business owner kept telling me that my husband told him what part to get which is also untrue. If my husband knew what part to get then he could've fixed it himself! I told my husband to cancel the check but he was not comfortable and said that they would surely do the right thing and credit back for the parts. I have yet to get the invoice showing how much the parts cost along with their markup for shipping, or travel time or time spent ordering. My advice to anybody using this company is to document everything and get written estimates. Do not use!!! I wish there was a minus 5 stars option! Mis-diagnosed dishwasher visit because did not do a thorough evaluation on visit 1 of 3. Replaced a hose that was not the issue on visit 2. In the end (visit 3) the real problem was a $3 hose (charged $89). In total the cost was $550 (for a $900 appliance) of which $182 were parts that per GE were $36. I call that an un-ethical mark up. This probably should have only taken two visits - 1 to diagnose and 1 to bring the parts and fix. Work schedules were re-arranged three times for this. After my husband gave me a download I called to discuss and he was rude (probably didn't like a woman holding him accountable). Wanted to know why my husband didn't call! Well, he did, and when called back was not available so the appliance guy got the pleasure of dealing with me! I requested an invoice that showed his cost from GE, and yes I understand there would be some mark up for shipping and time spent ordering. He talked in circles (I have no patience for that) and at one point said he would "come after me." Not sure how he has as many stars as he has but perhaps his friends are posting reviews. I will not be calling the Appliance Guy again. While I was not happy with the work he did (or perhaps didn't do), he did make an effort, and normally I would not have bothered to write any review. But in light of additional circumstances I decided a review was appropriate. Our dryer was not heating. On the plus side, he came by the next morning which was a Saturday. What I thought was another plus was his initial fee to make the service call....a little more than about half of what larger operations charge. I say "thought" because I believe he made up for this on the back end! When he arrived, he opened some part and after a time announced the problem was the heating element, which he replaced. We turned the dryer on and it was heating. He charged us $280 (including the initial fee for service call and the part) and he left. Certainly not a great deal, considering the part generally runs around $25. The dryer stopped heating within 5 minutes (the original problem). The next day he came back and said it was the fuse, but if it turned out not to be, we should probly get a new dryer! (All this time he was aware this was an old dryer.). He did not charge for the second visit but we paid him $20 for a fuse. Same thing..it worked for a couple minutes, he left, it stopped heating w/n 5 minutes. If anyone looks online they will see possible causes of a dryer not heating are the heating element and fuses. So I do not believe the appliance guy actually analyzed the problem to determine what it was or whether it could be fixed...he simply guessed (wrong) -- twice-- while telling us he'd figured it out and charging $300 ... then telling us he guesses we need a new dryer! We've never had a worker ask for payment of $300 while telling us if the appliance continues to not work, we should buy a new one. But it got worse. Because we'd paid him $300 for nothing, he said he would help us transport a new (used) dryer we'd bought in SR and hook it up. He said he would look at his calendar and call us right back to make arrangements. He never did. Two days later I had a flat tire pulling out of my carport (near where he'd been working). There was a sharp screw in the tire and because of where it was, the tire could not be repaired. I have 4 wheel drive so we had to pay more than $500 for 4 new tires. The screw was from the back of the dryer, and we found another on the ground...screws he had not replaced when he'd closed up the back of the dryer. So the Appliance Guy's visit cost us $800 and fixed nothing. read more
