It's been almost a year since we remodeled our kitchen. We are so happy we decided to use Appleton Design & Construction. Tom and his crew were great! Whenever I had a concern or question, Tom or someone from his crew would quickly get back to me. One example of going above and beyond was when we unboxed our microwave for installation. Unfortunately, we unboxed our microwave on the 17th day after purchase. We thought we had 30 days. The microwave had a huge dent. I called the retail store and they refused to replace it. They said they could only give me a gift card for $40. Tom was able to use his contacts and the store then replaced the microwave. I also appreciated that Tom listened, gave suggestions and helped us with how I wanted the kitchen to function. Tom and crew did a lot of work for us but he and his crew missed the mark when it came to making a concrete countertop for our kitchen. This concrete sealant or whatever you want to call it was apparently the first time this product was used by him which I would not suggest he do with anyone else. I believe he had a choice to use an industrial grade product (as I requested) since our request was to make the countertop "shine like Costco's floor" but this is what the product looked like after a few months. He guaranteed that he would redo the countertop to our satisfaction but he stopped working on this even though the final product came out looking like crap - and after the third attempt as well. Unfortunately Tom elected to no longer work with us after I pointed out some of his other shortfalls so just keep this in mind when getting bids. Tom often likes to use a guesstimate bidding versus providing a formal quote. Sure it cuts down on costs, but you might not get what you thought you were getting since nothing is in a formal quote many times. I could point out other things that just were not done very well like when our Sub-Zero fridge showed up and Tom's crew didn't read the specifications correctly so the crew could not install the fridge and Tom's crew had to fix the opening in the kitchen and then the Sub-Zero crew had to come back a week later. The instructions were clear and Sub-Zero has very detailed specs - but the crew didn't pay attention to them. Again, just things like that were a normal occurrence throughout the entire time we had Tom do our projects. His father's custom kitchen cabinets turned out ok - looked very nice, but some of the trim pieces were not lined up on other areas. Just little annoyances. Anyway, nice bunch of people, but not what you'd expect for the several tens of thousands of dollars we spent over a year. read more

Tom Appleton, owner of Appleton Design & Construction just completed a 9 month total beach bungalow renovation for our family in North County San Diego. Strong and clear communication, a fair estimate of work, high quality craftsmanship, and in-house custom cabinet shop were mandatory for us. ADC met our expectations with all of those and more. Tom and his fantastic crew repaired our old patio cover, removed dry rot around some windows, and made everything look brand new. Tom gave me an estimate that was spot on. The invoice was the same as the estimate, even though I think his team went beyond the original scope of work a bit. No nickel and diming. Each day his crew cleaned up after themselves. After attempting and failing to start a project with 2 other companies, we had the fortune of meeting Tom and the crew at ADC. Tom has been amazing to work with -- and his subcontractors are top-notch. Tom is patient, responsive and not intimidated by large scale dreams. Every single person on his team (shoutout Greg, Kris, Jay), is respectful, conscientious, and friendly. We have just completed an outside project converting an uninspired, boring back of the house into a beautiful, open area to relax outside and bring that peace inside our home as well. We are about to start Phase 2 of our conversion -- the kitchen and replacing the flooring on the entire first floor. I am so excited to have my dream kitchen and get rid of the hideous floor tile! Bay, Tom's stepfather, has been accommodating and patient in the planning stages and I cannot wait to see the gorgeous cabinets he will create. Hiring people to come into your home every day, demo a part of it, and then rebuild it, day-in and day-out is a pretty big deal. Then asking him to build from plans by a novice (me) is a whole extra level of complexity that could have made our bathroom redesign a headache, but Tom and his patient team made the whole process run smoothly, even when issues arose. I am a home inspector and all day I look at poor workmanship. I was not going to tolerate spending money on a construction/remodel project that was not done correctly. Tom and his crew were very professional and enjoyable people to be around. They helped me make decisions and were accommodating with letting me do some of the finish work like painting and tile myself (even though I wish I would have had them do it). Tom and his Company built a frame opening for our new La Cantina Doors. The job required removing a large window and door and replacing it with a frame capable of supporting the new bifolding doors and removing and reinstalling my retractable sun shade. From the start, Tom explained what they were going to do, an approximate time frame and the cost . Each day, I knew who was coming, what time they would arrive and what they would do. At the end of the day, they cleaned up the work area and told me what was going to happen next. I was extremely impressed with how each employee was dedicated to completing their portion correctly. The inside of the doors matches the floor perfectly, sounds easy, but he spent a lot of time matching the colors and it shows. I have used the crew at Appleton Design and Construction on a couple of occasions and have been nothing but pleased. The owner Tom is very detail oriented and cares about his work and his clients. Tom and his team are awesome and amazing and I'm dreaming up my next project for them (and which lottery I'll win!). They did an addition to add an office, 1/2 bathroom, and mudroom for us that snowballed (our choice) into new wood floors throughout the house, painting walls, cabinets, fireplace re-do, new fence in the yard, etc.... They can handle custom built-ins, marble fabricated sinks, steel doors, you name it! What sets them apart: reliable, non-sketchy crew that was trustworthy, clean, and didn't smoke! The project was on budget for exactly what he quoted me, fixed every little thing I mention with a smile and didn't make me feel like I'm extremely type A/OCD, which I might be. :) Tom and his team are detail oriented and do great work. If he's a few months out, he is worth the wait. You call him, he'll answer. You text him, he'll answer. You need ideas or suggestions for which way to go on something, he's helpful. I'm kind of sad the project is over! And if you are debating between using a GC to deal with the entire project or to piece meal it with different subs, don't do it! Where do I begin? Tom is professional, courteous, clean and over delivers. We hired him to add arches to a couple walls and to install a support beam in our basement. What impressed me most about Tom and his team were their concern for keeping things clean and safe. He did all his due diligence before cutting into the wall. He took extra steps to make the new design structurally safe. When the job was finished he sent over his electrician to add finishing touches on the electricity, which I was not expecting. We are under renovation over here and finding this kind of help was so refreshing. I felt so comfortable with all of his staff, all so polite and professional. Tom is a phenomenol contractor. I've been dealing with Rendon Construction since July on a slab leak which caused other minor issues including my special needs daughter restroom. Rendon over measured the special order vanity for my special needs daughters restroom. She is in a wheelchair. The vanity that Rendon ordered ended up being too large, and as such, my daughter, could no longer get into her restroom. My daughter has been without a vanity since July and has to be taken to the laundry room sink everyday since the initial Construction company came in my home. Tom from Appleton Construction saved our lives!!! While Rendon Construction company told me there was no way for the vanity they ordered to be cut down to fit my special needs daughter chair, Tom came to the rescue and took the cabinet, altered it, brought it back and put it back in all within a few days. Mind you, I'm still dealing with the nightmare of hiring the exisitng company still in my home. Tom was sent by Heaven. He is extremely professional, courteous and very accomdating in trying to clean up the mishaps of other contractors.
