I really enjoyed visiting Jacksonville, Oregon. My wife and I went on a camping trip near by and on…read morethe way back home, we wanted to check out Medford, Oregon. Once in Medford, everyone was telling us to go to Jacksonville, Oregon to look at the historic building and all the fun things to do there. We redirected there, it was only about a 15 min drive to Jacksonville. The downtown area was very cute, we saw a farmers market type event setup at City Hall. We parked and walked over to check out all the things the different booths were selling. We saw lots of unique things there like woodcarvings, pictures & paintings and even some food and drinks. After a short time we continued driving through all the neighborhoods, enjoying the different types of old homes.

"Jacksonville is named for Jackson Creek, which runs through the community & was the site of one of…read morethe first placer gold claims in 1851. It includes  Jacksonville Historic District which was designated a U.S. National Historic Landmark in 1966." The gold was played out so Jacksonvlle went into a big sleep which may not have been so good for the residents at that time, but in hindsight, Jacksonville went into suspended animation thus preserving the 19th century buidings intact. Strolling along California Street is like goIng back to the 1890's. You almost expect a barber shop quartet to be singing some old fashioned tunes, or player pianos playing in a saloon. In fact one saloon, J-Ville Tavern occupying the former Anderson & Glen General Merchandise Bldg, touts itself as a "Husband Daycare Center" for wives who want a break from their spouses. The barber shop still sports an old time barber pole w/ a dome light on top. The window displays spitoons & other objects from that bygone era. Jacksonville Lumber Company on a side street does reverse chic and displays a Pink Flamingo & artificial flowers as if to slyly make a reference to John Waters' infamous cult film by the same name. We found the Cheese Monger's Wife to be a great place to get Euro style sandwiches, local Rogue Creamery Blue Cheeses, Siskyou Wild Honey, Pistola Côte du Rhône style white wine. Their cheese board was an impressive exercise in aesthetic composition. The lady owner goes out of her way to inform her customers who are curious about the gourmet products that she stocks & sells. Nice two or three hours to soak up some Southern Oregon charm with a fin de dix-neuvième siècle ambience.

This is a beautiful library nestled in the woods at the edge of the charming town of Jacksonville…read more Without exception, the people who work here are warm, friendly and know their business. They are a wonderful, very comfortable chairs to radian. The library has great big, beautiful windows looking out on the outside, so there is plenty of natural light. I have macular degeneration, so I primarily listen to books on Libby. I always loved reading so much that I resisted trying Libby, but I am mediately adopted it on my first pass. I can't recommend anywhere more than this wonderful place.

Their selection is limited, including that of the whole county, but you can't beat the price! It's free as long as you return books on time, anyway. The only annoyance I've found is that you can't renew an item if someone is on the wait list for it, so you really have to be sure you finish with it within the original borrowing period. Failure to do so possibly results in being shuffled to the end of the queue, sometimes months. Libraries in cities I've always lived in allow you the maximum renewals before requiring a book be returned for the next borrower, but what can you expect for 'free?' The only other comment is you really have to mind the various branch hours - as has become customary nationwide with many library system cutbacks - the Jacksonville branch seems closed more often than it is open. Be sure to plan ahead, and utilize the online system to reserve items from other branch locations. It will make your library card more valuable.

This is my first time at this facility. I have been avoiding crowds (of course) for a while…read more I know this is outdoor but alas, I've been at home for two and half years. So while there are no mask requirements, I wore one the entire time. I was mostly the minority but hey, if it keep my head in the right space what do I care?!? We saw a comedy show on the grass and it was very enjoyable. This was walking distance from where we were staying which was also great. If I can take a getaway and largely leave my vehicle parked then I'm a happy camper. I cannot speak to the vendors or anything else. I didn't use those or the restrooms. The show was really about an hour and a half and about a ten minute walk, so no need. You can buy seats but I liked the idea of bringing a blanket (we forgot ours but the canvas painter's drop cloth purchased at Ace Hardware did the trick) and sitting on the grass. That way you decide how far apart you are. All in all a good time for a nervous Nellie. I really need to get a life (haha). I'd try it again.

First time we ever had a Less than stellar show. Not only do they refuse to allow any alcohol in…read morethe show, but that which they sell is so severely overpriced! Secondly, the regulation of cell phones, Albeit a good idea, seems to be at best unconstitutional. Lastly, the volunteers who are almost always amazing seem to be on some sort of high alert and we watched when some pretty minor infractions incur some pretty needless feedback. Maybe it was just me...
