Jackson County Library in Ashland is a great library with exceptional employees! They are always cheerful, friendly and willing to help. I enjoy even just going in to pick up books I have on hold! The children's area is great as well- so colorful and cozy for kids! read more

A wonderful library with a great childrens section. There are many events every week, writers groups, helpful staff, reliable internet, and the chance to actually work long hours on a computer there if you need. Some libraries cut it off at 1.5 hrs, but it's around 5-6hrs daily at this branch. There is a wide selection of books, ebooks, music and film, and all of it is available from the Jackson county area. There's also books available, free or with suggested donation and a food pantry for the local nomads. Nice little Library. And one of the original ones Andrew Carnegie financed some 100+ years ago. read more

Gayle and I stopped by the library a few times during our recent trip to Ashland. We would arrive at the opening time of 10 AM and head upstairs to check emails, Facebook updates, and Yelp Compliments. There's a 20 minute use limit and that was more than enough time considering the many non-digital offerings in Ashland and beyond. We also went downstairs and browsed through the newspaper before heading out. Gayle was even kind enough to tie her hair back and wear glasses, so I could serenade her to the tune of "Madam Librarian" as we wandered through the stacks. Architecturally, we were both impressed with the high ceilings and wood beams within the upper floor of the modern wing and the children's section inside the original Carnegie section. In fact, this Carnegie Library couldn't look better both inside and out. And as Toni M. mentions, the new library has plenty of light and great views. Library staff were friendly and helpful and on these rainy mornings (and before the Theater), hanging out in the Library is a pretty cool and comfortable way to pass the time. read more

It's the library. It rocks. Spend some time there, so that when the Zombie Apocalypse hits you'll know to include earplugs in your go bag and where to look up other information disappeared by an EMP. Also one of the more subdued yet influential reasons why government is a good thing (you can use the library to research corporate takeover of government and even ways to reverse it, like forming a Congressional Watch Group). This particular branch has those inspiring views of the Cascade Mountains, too. read more

This is a really nice library. I enjoy that it's smaller than most. The people who work here (who I have actually talked to) are pretty nice and generally really helpful. The one downside (obviously) is that they don't have the biggest selection (thought they do have a lot) since it is a small library. I have a list of books I want to read and after going on their computers to search for them, I could not find most of them, or they were all checked out. I would definitely recommend coming in here and getting a library card! They have magazines, CDs, movies, and lots of audio books. And their late fees are pretty reasonable, only a quarter a day. (I never turn things in late, so that seems like a great deal to me :) Coming from Portland, I used to sell back all my books to Powell's and then go buy more books. But now I am going to start donating my old books here! I want to help them expand as much as possible. read more

I think it's kinda silly to review a library, but for what it 's worth, the APL is pretty damn good! I do all my "librarying" online, log in, do searches, reserve books, books on cd, dvds, etc. stuff comes in, it's on the shelf with my name on it, in/out/done. Sometimes I like to lounge around and read the magazines. The architecture is fantastic, lots of natural light. Good enough selection, but with all of Jackson Co. items available for inter-library loan, I can find what I am looking for 90% of the time. Shortcomings:: too many stinky homeless people congregating and stinkin' the place up. they have a policy, if someone can smell you 6 feet away, your smell is considered a nuisance and you can be asked to leave. policy not enforced enough!! the fabric covered chairs are all now stinky, so don't sit in them. other than the stinky people, the screaming brats are left to run around and make a total ruckus. what's up with these lazy ass parents who forgot that libraries are not a freakin' daycare! The staff could give a shit about the noise. Not nearly enough parking. Ashland likes to give out parking tickets, so mind the time! read more

Took a free short course there recently on using library database service, Learning Express Library, which is very helpful when searching for sample exams for various careers, student instruction prep test and much more. it was a great introduction to the Ashland Library. They have a series of courses and I hope to take more of them in the near future. read more

Came here from out of town and I didn't have a library card but needed to use their computer. Approached the front desk. I asked if I could use the computer. One of the ladies questioned me on the library card which was fine. Then she just pointed to the computers and sent me over there. Let me just say, she was less than friendly. Maybe because they're used to getting a lot of people from the street who just hang out there. Don't know why this lady didn't know how to distiguish a normal out of towner and homeless person hanging out at the library. read more

Ashland's Library is a wonderful place. The view from the upstairs is amazing. The library staff is very helpful, from finding books, needing assistance online, and even trying to figure out how to download books to your kindle. The building has public space for meetings, a very nice collection of books, several public computers, wifi, periodicals and a very nice children's section. read more

When we moved out of the Super 8 this morning our room in the new place wasn't cleaned yet, so where did we go? To the library, of course. Ashland built a new library just a couple of years ago and then Southern Oregon lost special Federal funding and had to close the libraries. Last fall, I think, a deal was worked out to privatize them and they reopened. People were apprehensive about the arrangement but it seems to be working well. The new library is right next to the old one which was built in 1912. That library was of the North Berkeley library's vintage and style and I loved it. It has been converted to a children's library, opened into one large space w/ the walls painted a cafe au lait. The two libraries are connected by a glassed-in passageway. The new library has windows looking out onto the mountains and valley as well as Siskiyou Blvd. They have up to date newspapers and a good selection of books and magazine and I think they have computers upstairs. They librarians were friendly and helpful and the library, of course, had lots of patrons coming and going. read more

Today I went to the children's library with my two year old son and one of his younger play-mates. It was a busy day in the children's library, but even when it isn't, it is always a little bit louder than the rest of the library. Which I guess is why it is separated from the rest of the library. I, being 9.5 months pregnant wasn't feeling up for a crowd so I took my son and his playmate who I was carrying on my back in an ergo over to a quiet corner to read a book. My son picked out a book, he layed down on the floor, and I sat down beside him with his friend still on my back, and we read. He was tapping his feet. A woman who worked at the library turned around and told me to tell him to stop tapping his feet. She seemed extremely annoyed at our presence, and generally very unpleasant. Now mind you, the library was filled with children who were laughing and yelling and crying and running, slamming things, being playful, being 2 or 3 or 4, or whatever aged children. I did not witness her tell any of them to be quiet. I witnessed her tell me to tell my kid to stop tapping his feet. I did not tell him to stop because that is the craziest shit I ever heard in my life. He wasn't saying a word. He wasn't going anywhere or doing anything. He was tapping his feet and looking at pictures in a book while I read. This is what people do in a library. He wasn't doing anything wrong and I don't correct him for not doing anything wrong. We were maybe the quietest people in the library at the time and also the darkest. Maybe it wasn't because we're black. But what am I supposed to think? We were the only people of color there and my kid was the only one who wasn't acting like baby Tarzan. And yet I was the only mother being asked to tame her child. Guess what Rosemary. My two year old son knows that if he acts like a parent-less child anywhere in public that he will be removed without warning. We get in the car and we go straight home. No warning, no empty threat. I have Zero tolerance for behavior that the parents in this town seem to embrace; he knows this already at 2 years old because I am an excellent mother. I know that for some reason the world holds big black men to a higher standard. I know that he cannot act like a normal two year old or even an extraordinary two year old or eight year old or twelve year old or thirty year old without some white lady shaking her finger at him. I know that if he reaches to fast for his wallet or drives with a tail light out that he might get shot in the back. I know he might get suspended from school if he looks too long at your daughter. I know that he might get arrested for going into his own home if his neighborhood is nice enough. I know that I would not be doing him or my race any favors by raising him free range, which seems to be the preferred parenting style in this town. Thank you. Today my son learned valuable lessons which I knew he would have to learn eventually. read more

I love our library. I can check out lots of books on tape or DVD to listen to during long drives. If they don't have what I want they can usually get it from other libraries. Also, sometimes I take my laptop there and find a nice comfy chair to use, and I can get my work done using their wifi, in a nice, clean, pleasant atmosphere (with nice views out the big front windows). read more
