A cultural hot spot in Oregon…read more We stopped by the City of Ashland mainly because we saw a roadside attraction we Googled and supposedly it's a public fountain that spouts "health water" from a nearby spring. After walking around Lithia Park we actually found it on Main Street near an information booth. There are 8 spouts with signs all around reading "Out of Order." LoL oh well... I guess, the Lithia water fountain is more of an oddity than for the water's supposed health benefits. In our search for that Natural Lithia Water Fountain we also happened to find Mix Bakeshop. I purchased a few pastries which we enjoyed on our drive back to California. We also stumbled upon a historic park in the heart of downtown Ashland -- Lithia Park. We only saw a little bit of the 93-acre park but it had ponds, fountains, gardens (including a Japanese Garden) and hiking trails. Its huge! Ashland OR was on our way home to California when we took Interstate 5. It is about 18 miles from the California/Oregon border. Last but not least... Ashland is home to the world-famous Oregon Shakespeare Festival. Happy travels! Review #3267

THE SETUP It's nice to take a few hours and pop into Ashland, OR and hit some off the very cool stops in the downtown area: DINING & DRINK The delicious eateries, bakeries and restaurants they have all along the main drag (literally "Main St."), and along the side streets from Main St., including: * The Mix Sweet Shop - excellent bakery & pastries * The Greanleaf Restaurant, replete with fantastic vegan options * Lost Brasserie & Bar - elegant evening dining with stellar soups & seafood dishes LITHIA PARK A beautiful lush park full of green lawns, duck ponds, and hiking areas. SHAKESPEARIAN FESTIVAL Of course, Ashland is internationally renown for it's extensive collection of theaters and theater-companies both resident & visiting theater groups, promoting the dramas, comedies & dramedies of my favorite English Bard..........Monty Python! No no, I KID, I KID. But always fun to see the theater runs and enjoy not only Shakespeare, but many other play by talented writers in this community. Hanley Farm is one of those local historic places that has a lot going for it but doesn't seem to…read morelive up to its potential. It is scenic, a great location, ample parking on site or nearby, but more often than not the gate is locked and they are closed. They have been hosting seasonal events lately - a scarecrow festival, a wreath making day this weekend - but they seem to have a scaled down volunteer staff to coincide with the limited hours. It's too bad! This place could be a great spot for the community.

This was once the train depot back in 1891, although I'm not sure if it was the same building. Now,…read moreit is a very modest visitors center with a friendly woman and a bunch of brochures. We asked her for some help finding a bakery and while sadly there isn't one anymore, she tried to find us some place where we could get some bread. On top of that, she was knowledgable about what had happened to an old bakery from the town. There's also a lot of parking in the area, so it's a good spot to start a quick walk through this old boom town.
