We went to Applebee's because it was there. It was sunny and humid and the parking lot was wide and empty like a field where nothing good ever grew. Inside, it was muggy and smelled faintly of something familiar and dead. We sat in a booth under a light that buzzed like a dying fly. The menus were sticky. That was fine. We had been through worse. The food came quickly. Too quickly. I admired the swiftness with which they removed the dignity from a chicken breast and salted it to death. It was heroic, in a way. A man could die of thirst eating this meal. Not good thirst--the thirst of the desert. The kind of thirst that comes when you have been punished. There was salt, yes, but no flavor. Like the ocean, if the ocean had given up. They gave me fries. The fries were salted too. More salt than potato. You could strike a match on one and it would burn all the way through. But still, no taste. Like a pool noodle that had spent too many summers in the Key West sun. It reminded me of war. Not a particular war, just the concept of it. A lunch companion shared a bit of their meal with me. The salmon tasted like it had been cooked by a man who had a vendetta against fish. Perhaps as a boy his finger was barbed by a hook while fishing on a dock and now every fillet was treated as the object of that painful memory. They served it with something they called blackened seasoning. Said it with pride, like it was a thing done with care and a memory of the South. But it wasn't. It was black in color, yes, the way a thing gets when it sits too long and no one watches. But flavor? No. It was the taste of defeat, powdered and burned. In the end, I paid the bill and left the tip because I am not an animal. Outside, the afternoon was quiet. I walked into it, full of regret. A regret which will endure for the ages, if only because of the sodium content of the meal. read more

Jessica was my bartender and waitress and she was fantastic. We were there for Veterans Day and it was extremely busy but she always had a smile on her face and was very nice. I haven't been to Applebee's in a long time but I have to go back at least to this location because they are so kind and nice. The food wasn't the best, it could've been better. I ordered a chicken tenders platter (5) and when I received it I only got three instead of five. My parents and I went to this location a couple weeks back during homecoming on a Saturday. Despite being busy they got us promptly seated. We were then greeted by the most pleasant server I have experienced in the last couple years. Her name was Ginny and def made us feel comfortable and that we would be taken care of. When a restaurant offers a grilled chicken caesar salad for $14.00 it seems reasonable to expect freshly grilled chicken and not the bland, multi-purpose cubes that came in the very disappointing salad I was presented with yesterday. Torn iceberg lettuce, a few croutons, and what I'm guessing was bottled dressing topped off this completely forgettable meal. If making a proper salad is not the kitchen's strong suit, they shouldn't be on the menu. To add insult to injury, the server seemed completely disinterested in making me feel welcome or well taken care of. C'mon, Applebee's, you can do better. read more

Had a gift card here so I decided to take mom out for dinner and the food was honestly fantastic! We arrived during happy hour and first ordered the boneless wings with honey BBQ sauce and Grilled Chicken Wonton Tacos. Holy mother of wonton tacos those things were amazing! The wonton shell was very light. The peanut soy sauce the chicken was mixed in was a little on the thinner side but still wonderful and the cole slaw topping really complimented each bite. Since you only get 4, I definitely think it's only worth buying during happy hour but I could of easily eaten 20 of those! The wings were good. Normal wings saturated in BBQ sauce. For the main course I settled on the Brunch Burger with a side of steamed broccoli while mom went with the Whiskey Bacon Burger with garlic green beans. My burger was one of the best I've ever had. Coming from a sucker for breakfast foods, this was right up my alley and it did not disappoint! The melted cheese and egg were most pronounced in each bite with the meat almost taking a back seat but it worked! The extra bits of bacon and hash browns made it even more delicious. I cannot say enough good things about that sandwich. If you like breakfast foods as much as me, you HAVE to try it! I was disappointed with my side though. Even though I ordered steamed broccoli, it was caked with butter. Yuck! If you go that route, be sure to reiterate to your waiter you want it steamed without butter added! Mom loved her sandwich as she ate it just as quickly as I ate mine! Overall we had a great experience here. Our server was friendly and easy going. Our food came out in a timely manner and was the proper temperature. The wonton tacos and my brunch burger were the highlight for sure! The broccoli was meh with the butter but wasn't a deal breaker. Seems like people get a mixed bag of good or bad experiences here but if you're in the area - especially during happy hour - you should stop and at least try there wonton tacos! The food is very, very salty. The food was cold. I ordered the prime rib sandwich. Between the salt and the burnt prime rib meat was horrible. My husband picked it up and we live very close so not sure why the fries were so cold and tasting old. My prime rib sandwich was soooo salty. Do not recommend this place. We have ordered twice recently to go. First order was missing the dressing to the salad, which was unfortunate as we live 20 minutes away. We called the manager and they were apologetic, and gave us a credit for a future meal. Today we called and talked the "manager on duty" which was a shift lead. We received our credit and put our order in with her. We then drove the 20 minutes to retrieve the food, drove all the way home and once again, it was missing an item. We ordered two meals, yet they forgot an entire hamburger. We called, and the shift lead sounded as tho she was laughing and said she noticed the hamburger once she came back in from delivering it to our car. Why didn't she call us? The second meal was riddled with brown lettuce as well. Anyway, we drove there to get the hamburger and the shift leader did nothing for us and took no accountability. Oh Applebees, I'm so sad to write this. I loved our server, the environment was nice during the game, but most of our party had stomach issues after. My food was good, I truly enjoyed the bourbon chicken and shrimp as did my husband with his burger. The whiskey burger was delicious, he dug in before I could get a picture but unfortunately his fries were cold. Chicken Penne was good and enjoyed by a few in our group. I've had mixed experiences with Applebee's restaurants, but this one in Olympia is really good. It's usually never busy and the service is always excellent. I would only ever go to these restaurants during happy hours because the appetizers are extremely cheap and are the best part of the menu. Recently, I had the Spinach Artichoke Dip and Mozzarella Sticks. The dip is surprisingly really good - it's not too creamy, but not too liquidy at the same time. The chips are also extremely crunch and contain the right amount of salt. The mozzarella sticks are pretty standard, but very tasty as well. The best part about Applebee's are the month-long deals ($1 margaritas or long island iced teas). We paid an extra 50 cents to make the long island iced teas stronger and they are not terrible. You can definitely taste the alcohol and the iced tea mix is pretty good. It's refreshing to not have to pay $15 for a cocktail. read more

Go to the Lacey location. Great service there. They gave me the wrong order, the waitress admitted that she made a mistake. I waited another 20 min for my sandwich to come out. Meanwhile my husband was done eating and sat and waited for me. I get my sandwich and they put the coleslaw on the bottom, with the chicken patty on top. That just made the bottom bun fall apart. The Lacey location puts the coleslaw on top so no issues with the bun. Did I get a discount for their screw up? Nope. I will not be back. read more

Second time it came around it was finally rare...but such a bad cut of meat that I had to cut off more tendon thank there was steak. The best part was the wings and dessert. What was not fine is that they gave me a huge fry container with literal crumbs for fries. 17 pieces and only about two of them were more that two inches long.
