We purchased a "spec home" built by Detrie last fall. It has been an awful experience. After…read moretouring the house we declined it as an option because the stain color used was an unpleasant brown (medium orange). After we left the real estate agent CONTACTED US and stated the stain color was used by mistake and that the seller would have it refinished - at their expense. We decided to move forward ONLY after clarifying that the work would not be done by just covering over the original stain in any way. We literally said - "it's fine if you plan on doing that, but then it just isn't the house for us". Throughout the negotiation process we continued to clarify and be upfront about how the work would be done- each time we were re-assured by the selling agent that they knew we didn't want the work done that way & "it will be perfect". We moved from out of state & arrived for our final walk through right after everything was freshly redone. In the coming days after closing we started to notice runs & drips everywhere on the trim. The stain also seemed to form a dark film on top & the natural grain of the wood was pretty much gone. To make matters worse - someone from Detrie came in and changed some damaged trim boards and they are a totally different stain color. In the coming weeks we found out they basically just spray painted over everything - no sanding or removing of the old finish. The result is a blotchy uneven top film with numerous runs and drips - basically it looks like smoke damage over the medium orange stain color. To this day I'm so angry that we are here - we could not have been more upfront about what our expectations were. It's impossible to be an informed buyer if you are lied to to protect someone else's pocket book. It's been devastating to our transition here from out of state. We paid full price to be lied to and now we have to pay thousands of dollars in legal fees over - or tens of thousands of dollars to replace the damage they caused.

However, as you start to see the little things that come with living in the home, and point out the defects, the response time is slow to nonexistent and the Customer Service is well, not in any way customer centric. We had caulking issues, said it's due to the house settling and not something they address. The back screen door was inoperable, other doors would close on their own (not stay fully open). Keep in mind, this is a bran new home. The screen door and doors was an easy fix. Caulking is a no go. The biggest issue is the driveway concrete. It is chipping and cracking in many areas. They are aware, but we cannot get an answer as to when someone will be coming out and what will be done. The good news is, there is an MDH home being built 2 doors down. So lots of opportunity to speak with prospective MDH customers.

Buyer beware. Please look at the details. We bought a 6 year former Midwest Design Homes MDH spec…read morehome a year ago. I have been a real estate in the Fox Valley for over 15 years and was well aware of the marketing that MDH and Jon Huss Construction does. When my wife and I first purchased the home we were pleasantly surprised with how nice it was. Wide woodwork, large Anderson windows high ceilings and a staircase from the garage to the basement. Further cementing the image I had in my mind of MDH being a "Quality" builder..... However, after living in the home for a year I realized that it couldn't be farther from the truth. What I now know is that they try to put the nice things in the home that people see on the surface ie. Wide woodwork, tile fireplace, stone on exterior however the things that really matter, the expensive things they cheap out on them. Four months after buying the home we had to replace the water heater. We replaced all three toilets in the house because they constantly kept running because they were such a cheap brand. The inside flushing mechanism failed on two of them and the third one was so loud when it would fill we replaced that one as well. I had to hire a plumber to replace the shower valve on the main bath because it would constantly drip. The dishwasher no longer cleans the top rack of dishes so now it too needs to be replaced. The basement had the extra staircase to the garage which was great except for the fact there is no light switch at the top of the stairs when you go into the garage. Well you may think that's not a big deal except that they didn't put any windows in the garage nor did they put in a service door. So when you go into the garage from the basement it is pitch black day or night. When you want to go out for a walk or anything you need to raise the garage door to do it. I'm just waiting for the garage opener to be the next thing to go. Back to the basement they didn't put any windows in it. Not even the little ones. So once again when you go into the basement you need to have the lights on. The bigger issue than that was the fact that when my boys are down there, their only way to escape if there was a fire would be back through the main stairway because once again if you went up through the garage you wouldn't have a light and if the power was out because of the fire(which would be likely) the garage door wouldn't open and they would be trapped. So I ended up having to cut in an egress window for peace of mind. $2,500.00 later.... The gutters were installed wrong and pitched the wrong way so they sit full of water when it rains hard the water pours right over the top of them. So far I haven't had any issues with water in the basement (thank god) but I know if I don't have them fixed it's only a matter of time. The final issue I have is on the side of my house the wall actually bows in about 3 inches. I'm not sure how this could have happened but when you look down the side of my house it is extremely obvious. Unfortunately it was winter when we bought the house and didn't spend enough time outside to notice it. It was after closing that I noticed it. My biggest point to anyone considering a Midwest Design Homes or Jon Huss Construction since they are both owned by Jon Huss is to really look at the details and do not get fooled by what's only on the surface. They do a great job of marketing themselves as this high quality builder but just be careful....
