Great local restaurant, family owned and run. Great portion sizes. Has dine in or carry out. Fast service. Love Apple Garden!

This is a tough one as I'm really mixed on this place. Typically I really like it or not. Those that are on the fence make it rough to give an accurate "rating" but based on the big negative about the place and unless we try it in the future, a solid 2 stars is where it's at. Most people giving feedback around here aren't very descriptive or helpful, I'll do my best to explain all that I can so you can decide if it's for you. Keep in mind, this was on Christmas Eve so the 25 min wait is to be expected. We have had a tradition in our family (kudos to those that know why OR do the same) to eat Chinese food the night before Christmas. While on an outing it was crunch time. It wasn't too late in the night but the first 3 places I called in Blaine were closed so I chose Circle Pines next. Only 3 options showed, first didn't answer, one seemed like a fancy sit down place, therefore we were left with this Apple Garden. Phone confusion: The entire phone conversation was confusing. Certain things didn't come with rice, others did. It was a mess. This is the first time possibly in my lifetime I've ever been to a place where common menu items were not considered combos... ok, sure, I'll adapt and overcome. Perhaps it's something different in this area compared to the other states. There are only 14 combos but it's baffling that "chicken almond ding" is a combo vs countless others. Not my restaurant, not my decision. After the confusing call and the 25 minute wait time over the phone it was well over 35+ to get our food. While inside there was a steady amount of people coming inside. Hard to say if that's the norm, if this place is popular, or if other people partake in the tradition like we do, but this was good to see. The young girl at the cash register wasn't very stoked about her day.. sorry my dear :( Food parts: -I'll start with why I can't rate this place solidly yet. We ordered: Beef and broccoli, sweet and sour chicken, chicken lo mein, and extra cream cheese wontons. There are several adults sharing and little ones between 3-5 eating. In the middle of dinner one adult grabs a bunch of paper towels and is fishing in her mouth. She bit down on something sharp and it cracked into her teeth..... it was solid and pointy. She was a few seats away but they said it looked like a piece of bone. I imagine what would have happened if one of the kids bit into that and it lodged into their gums or choked on it? This was alarming. It went from happy times to serious after that moment. -The Chicken lo mein was pretty tasty, I've had a lot of bad lo mein in my day and have a particular way I like mine to taste. This was very delish! I sampled the sweet and sour chicken and it was decent. The sweet and sour sauce was nothing special. Pro tip: adding a piece of pineapple in the container is ultra cheesy but I love it. This place didn't do it (maybe this could be bad for those allergic to it..?) but places I've been in the past - it's like a special surprise waiting for me. -The fried rice wasn't anything special. It wasn't bad by any means, but it wasn't good. I was hoping it was pork fried rice but in the car my family member said "they probably just include it" nope. Just. Rice. Maybe some peas. Maybe skipping on the combo was good. The steamed (white/sticky) rice was very good! For being "just rice" I loved the level of sticky it had. Not crumbling into pieces when I attempt to grab some. It was soft and delicate. Very pleasant to see. -Cream cheese wontons were my favorite part of the meal. How can you go wrong with them? I have a weakness for cream cheese and the crispies. It was perfect to taste. Overall: New to the area so this was a trial run. After the misc piece of hard bit in the food I'm not inclined to go back even though it's very close. Will try some of the other options in the area to see what else is around. Food was warm-hot. Service was ok, not great. They had a cool fish tank. Extensive menu. We put our phones away for dinner so I didn't get any of the food, but maybe I'll capture some leftovers later. If you feel up for new adventures, give it a try. We all have different experiences and that's what makes Yelp great.

Nice, friendly neighborhood dining establishment that does a lot of take out orders! It's quiet, hometown atmosphere makes me love it as much as the food. I enjoy the food here, it's hot and nothing is unexpected! It's not the fanciest or nicest food adventure, but it's hometown flavor appeals to me. We always eat in, always taking leftovers home.

We would bring our Hmong family here when they visit. I love the display of Hmong art, crafts and tools. Unfortunately, service has always been slow even on a weekday. I'm unsure why since workers do come around and check in. I've had their pho, laab, papaya salad, chicken wings etc. It's not memorable but it's Hmong food. Hoping they bring back waitressing for serving utensils, and dinnerware rather than having customers fetch their own water, foam plates or plastic ones. It's not appropriate to bring extended family here anymore when we have to tell them to get their own utensils and pho veggies from their service area. We prefer Pho 126 for large family dining or Boba & Tea Deli for Hmong food.

The various meats were executed well (mixed platter, rack of ribs) with good flavor. There is a good variety of Chinese, Hmong, and Vietnamese options (mainly pho). When I picked up my order the location appeared very clean and chill. I wouldn't mind eating in the restaurant. They also have kiosks where you order rather than ordering with a person, but someone was close to greet me and hand me my to go order. Onto the food, my friend ordered the sesame chicken with white rice. The portion is pretty good sized, unfortunately I don't have a photo. The sauce is very dark, and didnt really give sesame chicken as you'd probably expect from other sesame chickens in the twin cities. However it was a nice umami and cooked well. I enjoyed them, but it was not to my friend's taste nor what she expected. I ordered the braised pork belly special with purple sticky rice and Hmong sausage. The pork belly came with one egg, you can add more for an additional cost. The sausage comes with a spicy sauce, which you can also get extra for additional cost. The pork belly was soooo fatty. Like barely any fat rendering seems to have occurred and for being braised and fatty the meat was surprisingly dry/tough. The flavor was very sweet. It would have been nice for a bit more salty/umami to shine through. The egg was yummy, sauce penetrated the egg white pretty completely. Not sure how those are supposed to be in this particular dish, but it was a hard boil, not jammy or anything like that. The Hmong sausage was my favorite, very nice texture and flavor. The sauce is super spicy and pairs well with everything. The purple sticky rice was also perfect. Last, I added on a mango cheese bun which was fresh, lightly sweet, and delicious however it was not made from Vangz. It was pre packed from a St Paul bakery, so still local at least but I was expecting from their dessert options that those were made in house. Overall, the meal was decent. I purposely went with a special dish rather than a more popular choice because I like to show different options in my reviews. I hate when I can't find the whole menu in actual customer photos. If people are only ordering 5 items from you, that says something about your menu and overall food quality. I'm still curious to see what else Vangz has to offer before I write them off. I was torn between choosing the pork belly stir fry or crispy pork belly. I'd also love to try their pho. I will be back to try more and update my review :)

The potstickers were awesome but given the name of the place I was surprised that the real standouts were the other dishes. The ribeye was perfectly marinated and tender, tossed with a variety of vegetables and stir-fried noodles. The wings were terrific and the General Tso's was perfect. Don't sleep on the cucumbers either...smoky, spicy, and sweet, with peanuts and sauce. My favorite potstickers were the Beef & Carrots and the Kimchi Pork. I ordered the egg rolls, wontons, and the sesame chicken lunch combo. When we arrived, we noticed they had a lunch special available until 3 p.m. We asked if we could still order from that menu, and the woman taking our order pointed to her clock and said no. I glanced at my phone--it was 2:55 p.m. I asked her when the cut off time was and mentioned that their clock seemed a bit fast. She eventually let us order the lunch combo, but it was clear she wasn't thrilled about it. The interaction left us feeling a little awkward. As for the food--it was just okay. The wontons were bland and lacked any real flavor. The sesame chicken was underwhelming, missing that punch of sweetness and crunch I was hoping for. The side of rice tasted old and dry, like it had been sitting out for a while. The one highlight was the egg roll. It came out hot and fresh, crispy on the outside and filled with a good amount of veggies. It's definitely up there with my favorites. If I'm in the area again and my bestie is craving this spot, I'd be open to giving it another shot. Next time, I'd skip the combo and stick with the egg rolls, and maybe try her favorite dish--the lo mein. Hopefully, it'll be a better experience.
