Fun reuse of an old firehouse. Place was very busy. Can only get service by lining up at bar. Beer varieties were great...everyone in our party liked their selection. I had the Blood Orange, yum! Neat little brewery in Forest! Even though I'm not a big beer drinker, I really enjoyed my visit because they have good cider options and even some wine choices too. The food menu is small but solid. We had the pretzel bites and hamburgers, and both were tasty. The atmosphere inside is cozy and welcoming, while the outdoor area is pretty spacious with games like cornhole, which adds a fun touch. We went on a Wednesday for trivia night -- highly recommend! Tyler, the MC, does a great job keeping it fun and entertaining. My brother swore by this one and I'm sure he's visited most (if not all) of the breweries in this part of the country (likely twice). We stopped in for a couple on a recent afternoon. I love the layout, it's laid back and cozy with plenty of spaces to set up and have private conversation--you can hear the music (it was good) without it being overwhelming. Looks like they have trivia and special events as well. I tried the "hell frozen over" IPA and the "wrath of the lamb" stout. Both were good, the latter was great. A high-proof beer that doesn't take too strong, it went down smooth. Very flavorful. The best high ABV stout I think I've ever had. I grabbed a New England style IPA they canned as a 6 pack to take with me and it was solid and fairly priced ($10 for a carryout from a brewery--I've been charged twice that from some). Definitely a brewery I'd frequent if I lived in the area. Only request would be a solid food menu--some pretzels, beer cheese, pizza by the slice, sliders, etc. read more

Great brewery with indoor & outdoor seating -- ample room for kids & dogs to run. I tried 2 flights and it was all excellent. Sampled from light IPAs to the dark porter. (I was NOT driving). There is a train track directly behind the brewery and I found the train to sound lovely -- not a lot of honking as much as soothing clickity clack. The bartender was really entertaining -- he takes no pity -- and all the locals seemed to adore him. I did too. read more

I came to Apocalypse over the 4 years I was in college and continue to make trips down to Lynchburg and make sure to always come by and grab a beer. Camped in their parking lot as part of the Harvest Host program and had a wonderful evening. We like dark beer and they had several to choose between (we ended up trying 3 of them and bought some to take home). On some weekends they have food trucks, but not the night we were there, but they let you bring in outside food. They had a guy playing music who was pretty good but we sat outside and shared a table with a local couple and left with new friends. We would definitely go back. read more

First we went next door to Pints of Plenty then walked over here for Mary Beth and Mike to experience this place. They seemed to like it. They bought some bottles and a can at Pints of Plenty and a flight of some things here to try. Not real thrilled with any of them. I enjoyed the Chex Mix. . Really enjoyed my afternoon here at Apocalypse. Out of two flights of six, I really liked about 9. That's great odds. They are located in an old firehouse and have made great use of the space. Production room is the old engine bays and the tap room is upstairs. Huge deck out back overlooks the old carnival grounds which are loaded with picnic tables and festival lights. Looks like there is also an outdoor tap area in nicer weather. Only fault was no food or snacks other than couple bags of chips. Was hoping for a food truck on a Friday. I have been to many breweries around the US, as it is a hobby. Having that said, Apocalypse Ale works is hands down the best tasting beer that I have had the pleasure of tasting. I have yet to find a beer that comes even close. It blows my mind that I found this gem in Central Virginia. The owners are very passionate about offering high quality beers and a place to enjoy them, and it shows. The taproom offers a comfortable, casual and fun aesthetic: a perfect place to unwind after work, meet up with friends or catch the game. The brewery itself doesn't sell food, but you can bring your own, order delivery or there are frequently food trucks available in the parking lot. There's a large porch/patio area with corn hole, and space heaters for when it gets chilly. Frequently on weekends Apocalypse has live music. Apocalypse offers a wide variety of high quality beers available in pints, growlers or in flights for sampling. Expect to pay a little more than a casual restaurant for a drink, ~$6-7 for a pint, but well worth it IMHO for beer that doesn't suck and an extra 4 oz. The beer was decent, the bartender was a Dick! There was a plaque that said "worst bartender" with his picture and that's totally correct! Glad this isn't my local watering hole. Popped in here to kill some time before dinner and a concert. A friend and I split a flight to sample a couple of their beers, then each got two. My favorite was the Hell Yeah and their coffee cranberry. They offered a lot of different beers, and some hard seltzers which I've not seen offered at a brewery before. Their outdoor area is a good size and they have plenty of seating, plus some yard games. The inside was tiny, so I'm not sure how busy it'd be on a rainy day, but we got lucky and had beautiful weather to sit outside. They allow dogs, which is always a plus. The reason for 3 stars (3.5 really), is that customer service could use some work, and they mentioned multiple times during the short period we were in the tasting room, that they'd run out of glasses. Our beers were served out of plastic cups, which I expect more from a festival than a brewery. I'm not a super picky person, but if this is an issue that comes up frequently (hearing others talk about it made it sound like it is), then perhaps the business should look into a more permanent solution. Also, of the 3 beers I tried, there was not a huge taste difference between them. They all looked similar in color and had similar flavor profiles. I'd come back to try some of their other beers though, before crossing this place completely off. read more

Definitely the best brewery I have ever experienced hands down. It's past its infancy and continuing to grow. It's still small enough to feel like your own, but boast plenty of outdoor area and their porch is huge and mostly covered. The staff are the friendliest in town and the beer is on a level of perfection I've found nowhere else. They've started selling canned beers, but I prefer mine straight at the source. The one thing this establishment does great, beer. They have some wonderful tasting selections, and the prices are great as well. I had first met, and tried their beer at a local beer festival. Obviously they had to go on the list of places to visit. However, the establishment itself wasn't such a comfortable atmosphere. The bartender was stand-offish. Didn't talk much unless we specifically asked questions, or made a statement that earned a reply. The word "dive" would almost describe the inside. It looked as it was decorated but a few guys, who through some Christmas lights up, and called it a day. It's dark, and there weren't any customers really when we visited, which made the lack of convo, and background noise even worse. We came ready to fill growlers, and were so uncomfortable that we left without any! Now this place does look like it can get busy and fun in the warmer months when the outdoor space is in use. Maybe we will go back and try to re-experience it then. The beer alone earns them 5 stars. The service, the establishment, the lack of desire to even suggest or talk about beer selection from the tender - earns it a fair 3. 4 stars is my compromise on this place until I can revisit, if I do. read more

It's hard to believe you can get beer this good in little old Lynchburg (well, Forest), but Apocalypse delivers! They have about nine different brews on tap, several of which are gold and silver medal winners in national and international competitions. On the deck there is live music. Beyond the deck is the beer garden where people hang out and chill. It's a very laid back atmosphere. The clientele can't really be put in any one category, The age range will go from early 20s to 60s. Definitely worth checking out. read more
