The unit matched every single one of the pictures he posted, and all of the information was spot‑on. It was already a great option, but he immediately thought of two other places that might be an even better fit after getting to know my needs and preferences. The process was lightning‑quick because he knew the right questions to ask. He's incredibly resourceful and had so many options ready that, before I knew it, he had kindly driven me to another neighborhood where I was able to view two more units -- and I landed on one that was perfect for me and my dog. He even drove me to work on time afterward. It was a big deal for me to agree to view two more properties, knowing it might make me late to a life‑changing job opportunity. But I trusted that Tristan knew exactly what he was doing, and that the time spent was valuable. He got me there right in the nick of time -- and he never had to drive me anywhere to begin with. All of this took place in the hours right before his birthday. In addition to being kind, Tristan is incredibly smart, and it's clear he views his work as a craft. I can't remember a single moment where I asked a question and he hadn't already processed an authentic, helpful answer before I was halfway through my thought. He had great insights about apartment quality, design, layout, community, renting, relationships in the housing space, and how companies operate. He understands that renters have all sorts of ups and downs with timing, and that we don't always know our full range of options. You can tell he's extremely knowledgeable -- but more importantly, that he genuinely cares. I work in restaurants, where we talk constantly about the tiny details of guest interaction. Tristan understands that taking care of the human being in front of him leads the way, and that everything else follows. I actually paid more for this unit when I was just about to sign elsewhere, because the real value was in the integrity and genuine treatment I received. He also upgraded me to a much better product, and I could tell he took pride in that too. This experience reminded me of my first time with Apartment Guys 14 years ago, when an agent drove me around right after I moved to Chicago -- someone who was clearly motivated and well‑trained. A LANDLORD'S PERSPECTIVE: I have used Apartment Guys for the last twelve year to find tenants for my three bedroom rental unit. The current lease on the unit ended at the close of January. Between tenants, we always take time to deep clean the unit, perform preventative maintenance, and usually upgrade something. In mid February, I contacted Apartment Guys to list the unit. At my request, Sylvia, the leasing manager, walked the unit, made helpful suggestions and discussed a rental price and the current market conditions. She listed the unit the next day. Two of her rental agents, Tiffany and Craig, conducted set up showings of the unit to their clients. Each agent was excellent about fulfilling my request that I be texted before the unit was shown and each agent was excellent about closing and locking up the unit after each showing. Craig was the rental agent who found my future tenants. He was timely and knowledgeable throughout the entire leasing process. Craig effectively coordinated communications between myself, my future tenants and his office; was patient with my sometimes-delayed responses and; at my request, set up a meeting between my prospective tenants and myself. Craig efficiently handled every detail and request until the lease was finalized. While I do not think my rental unit will always be on and off the market so quickly, my experience with Apartment Guys staff over the years has been outstanding. The screening process Apartment Guys uses has resulted in a stream of reliable and well mannered tenants over the years. There are nice people who work here but it's an unscrupulous business. They put teaser apartments on Craigslist that have already been rented but are great units. Then, they pull the old "bait and switch". "That unit is rented but let me find you another unit". Of course, the new unit will be hundreds of dollars more expensive and in a less desirable neighborhood. These brokers get paid to rent hard to rent units that are expensive and have lots of move-in fees, admin fees, etc. No one likes to be manipulated. I am sorry to say, I don't recommend these real estate companies. If you are a good landlord with a nice unit, why would you need these guys to rent it for you? read more

Tiffany was super flexible with our schedule for touring, found us an absolute gem that we ended up applying to! Every unit she showed us made our decision harder and harder as she truly listened to our wants and needs. Most other apartment agents will take you around to places either out of the neighborhood you want, or just blatantly ignore your needs. I had a very underwhelming experience with Mallory trying to find a new apartment. We were very thorough in our list of things we wanted in an apartment and with our budget, and she showed us things that were significantly above our budget, not meeting our hard requirements, and focused on meeting requirements that we specifically said were not necessary. After the first time we saw her she said she understood better what we were looking for, only to show us even worse things the second time. She was insistent, trying to have us make a decision fast and saying that the market was drying up and we wouldn't get what we wanted if we didn't make a decision. To make things even worse, we sent Mallory Zillow links of apartments we actually liked and she showed us 20% of what we sent her, only to find out later that she was not accurate when she said the apartments we sent to her were not available. We ended up going to three of the apartments she said were not available by ourselves, and ended up signing with one of them with way better terms than she had ever shown us. Overall a very frustrating and unnecessarily stressful experience, and we will be sure not to recommend anyone else to go through it. Wanted to really like them. I worked with Kathy on my apartment search, she was really great and responsive at first, I thought things were going well. After looking at a few places, I applied for one and heard a few days later that I was denied, I reached out to Kathy to let her know how confused i was and she said she would call them. 2 days later I heard absolutely nothing from her and so I just reached out to the leasing office I applied with and corrected the info, which the credit reporting site had incorrect. Super simple and I ended up approved even though i signed with a different apartment. Recently contacted Apartment guys about a listing they had. Needed an updated apartment that also allowed dogs, not an easy find during the springtime. Was connected with an agent of theirs, Aisha. Aisha arrived at or appointment two days later with a larger list, including the apartment I inquired about. She proceeded to drive us between locations and was able to list the fees associated with each. Aisha also let us take our time, which I've found is rare. Once we decided upon an apartment, she kept in contact with the ownership group and made sure to update us throughout the entire process. Aisha was always punctual on returning calls and emails, which inspired a lot of trust from us. We ended up finalizing the apartment less than 3 days after applying for it. l signed my current lease after Apartment Guys placed a listing anonymously on a rental website. I'll be steering clear of their services in the future. Friendly staff, but way too many verbal assurances on behalf of a landlord that simply weren't true -- namely, that the apartment was set to be cleaned/repaired between the Apartment Guys' showing and the move-in a few weeks later. (The unit owner is overseas and hired Apartment Guys as his agent to manage the turnover of tenants.) High-pressure salesmanship is part of this business, but get everything from them **in writing** so there's more accountability. read more

I appreciated the flexibility of Apartment Guys, when I had to reschedule due to an unexpected issue. And for the most part, the apartments I was shown fit what I had asked for, although I ultimately changed my mind on what I was looking for. However, I was not a fan of the individual who showed me around, as she consistently told me how each apartment would exactly fit my needs, even after I said it wouldn't. This was a theme throughout my experience - even when I decided to increase my budget to consider two bedroom apartments, she told me it would be good for me to downsize to a one bedroom. Can't recommend. They're not horrible, but they just don't want to do the work. My only main requirement was that I needed on-property parking with access to electricity. They acted like this was confusing and when we talked it over on the phone I basically said yes any place that has electricity should have power, can you just inquire and see how far the power is from the parking spot. They told me that only premium places have those chargers. Reinterated that I don't need nor use that so I don't care. Basically this would require them to do more than cut/paste, and actually email/call the properties to see if I can use the spot. I even sent them the MLS #'s and they didn't check Ended up finding a place on CL and I literally email then called and it got confirmed that there was parking near my space. My rent was less than what they were showing. Agencies like this, and property owners make it really hard to help the environment, I don't even drive a full electric car, it takes gasoline too. read more

I'm amazed, seriously AMAZED at the service I got with Apartment Guys, and for free! I contacted them through their website over the weekend, and by Monday, an agent had contacted me, built me a list of apartments that met my criteria, took me on a video showing of a beautiful apartment building, and sent me all the application info. Saif took care of contacting the apartment manager, making sure the unit was still available, and driving to the building last-minute to make sure it was perfect. I'm also moving from out of town, and Saif made me feel a lot safer about what I was getting. Will update this review when the apartment is locked down, but so far I'm very happy! read more

bait-and-switch waste of time. wanted to like this place, but they turned out to be sketchy like most "apartment finding service" rackets in chicago. the game they play: 1) you make an appointment to view specific properties 2) they ask you to meet at their office (red flag since that makes you a captive audience for viewing a property for which i suspect they never had keys) 3) upon arriving at their office, you're told both units just so happen to no longer be available even though it's a dead time of year for the market, the reservation was made hours beforehand, they never called to say plans changed, and the listings remain online days later 4) they offer to show you other apartments, all of which exceed stated budget and other requirements. the slipshod business owner is likely more to blame for this bad experience than the actual agent, who was nice enough. wish chicago could crack down on these too-common operations in chicago. read more

This is the first time I've ever used a service to find an apartment and it will probably be the last. The main reason for my move was to adopt a dog. When I spoke to Apartment Guys on the phone and gave them my specifications, the girl I was speaking with said "well, it's going to be really difficult to find a place that accepts dogs, you're really limiting yourself." Uhm, no I'm not...plenty of dog owners have found apartments in this city. My agent was nice enough, but he was lacking a lot of customer service. On our first outing, he showed me some places that met my criteria, but they were dumps. Granted, I was searching for a place at the beginning of winter and that's not exactly prime apartment leasing time. So I understand that the renting pool was a bit shallow. I guess the thing that bothered me was that he kept trying to talk me out of the things that I wanted in an apartment. He kept saying "you're never going to find that in Chicago." I'm not new here. I know what is possible in Chicago and what isn't. I feel sorry for anyone who moves from out of state and doesn't know any better. Also, I had to contact him on an apartment that I saw on their website. I would think that they would keep files on their prospective clients and if anything looked like a good match they would contact a person. I guess not. Most of the places that I was shown are also advertised on Craigslist by other agencies. Save yourself the hassle and just do your own search. If it's possible, this place is worse than the apartment people. I was moving from out of state and made an appointment 6 days in advance. They called to confirm the day before. I show up on day of said appointment and they tell me I don't have one. What!? So some chick is able to tear herself away from all of her work (note sarcasm) and show me 2 places. First one was nowhere near where I said I wanted. The second one wasn't that bad but a little far north of where I wanted and without parking (as I wanted). She was so high pressure I was scared to say no. She took me to the place to fill out the lease even though I told her still wasn't sure about the place. Luckily I had to be pre-approved by the management company... so I sat through their "interview" and they told me they'd get back to me. After thinking about it and deciding I could find WAY better, I called the management company to tell them never mind, don't process my application. The high-pressure chick called me a week later to say: "What happened? They told me you were rejected!" as if I was a bad person. I explained that I changed my mind and told them not to process my stuff and she got mad at me! I can only assume she didn't get commission or something... Don't bother with this place, Craigslist is all you need. read more

I have to echo what a few other people have mentioned when reviewing apartment guys -- They do NO research before you get there and they don't listen to your preferences at all. We were assigned Kaz as our "apartment guy" and I first e-mailed him a list of our requirements including price, location and amenities and then discussed the same list with him again over the phone. When we arrived we were made to wait 15 minutes before being seen -- not a good start. After that he took us down to the south loop. We only saw three apartments, of which only one was anything thing like what we were interested in. The vast majority of the places he showed us were 1 bedroom plus den/office and certainly not two bedrooms. The last place we looked at we had to wait over 1/2 an hour for another agent to show up to let us into the apartment. It wasn't technically Kaz's fault but still beyond irritating. We figured that was because in our price range we couldn't get a real 2 bdrm in the south loop. So, rather than compromise on living space we decided to switch our focus to a Ukrainian Village/Wicker Park apartment. We were very specific about only being interested in those to places and the closer to Chicago/Division the better. Well, the first place Kaz took us was north of North Avenue and was a 1 bedroom! Thanks for doing your research... The next place was the far northern edge of Bucktown -- no where near where we wanted to live. After that we called it day and found a different agency to work with that actually listened to what we want. With so many places that specialize in apartments in Chicago why settle? read more

People like to complain about this place because they are stupid. The whole point in this service is to ASSIST you in finding an apartment not do all the work for you. If your gonna use an apartment finding company such as this one understand a few things first: 1) Be proactive. Check their website as well as others (craigslist) so you can get a feel for what's out there and for how much. 2) Be reasonable with what they show you. 3) Be specific but flexible. Sure a dishwasher is nice but if you eat out 5 nights a week not really a priority just because your lazy. 4) Ask questions! This one of those things where you only get out of it what your willing to put in! We were assisted by a girl named Erin who was helpful, informative, and honest. To her it was important to give the pros and cons of each unit instead of making each unit seem perfect. In the end I am very happy with the help we got from these guys and will certainly use them again if i'm looking to rent again in the future. read more

My boyfriend and I decided near the beginning of July to move in together. A big step for the both of us, and we wanted to find the perfect place. I wasn't worried, Chicago is filled with amazing places, and our first step was making an appointment with the Apartment Guys. I was damn sure they could hook us up. Our agent, who shall remain nameless, met us on time at the office. He had 4 places to show us so off we went in his car. I could barely contain my excitement! The first apartment was a few blocks away. Upon opening the door, our agent realized one tenant was still at home, and she.flipped.out. I guess no one had been contacting her to show the place and our agent said his records showed the apartment was vacant. Obviously not, and a bad start to our search. The tenant then began to give our agent a piece of her mind, while my boyfriend and I awkwardly stood behind him, our heads down and shuffling our feet as if WE were at fault. I wanted to slowly back away and run down the block, but we were finally allowed to see inside. And it wasn't that awesome of a place. One door was locked due to a roommate not being at home, and it was a little run down and in need of some work. We left after about 5 minutes. The second apartment was next to some Metra tracks and by some restaurant parking lot, and our agent couldn't even unlock the door. Ugh. He said we could go to the back and look through the screen door and at least see the kitchen. Really? You expect to sell a place this way? The screen was ripped like someone had attempted to get in, and I felt uncomfortable just being there. Again, we left. The third apartment I loved. It was brand new, close to my mom, and near all the neighborhoods we wanted to be by. I was a tad bit over budget, but it was a dream, and we wanted it for our own. We saw the 4th unit to be nice, but in my head, I knew what I wanted. The next few days consisted of us filling out applications and paying for credit checks. The owner/landlord of the unit had taken out on month's rent off my boyfriend's credit card without telling him, and our agent didn't seem to want to do much about it. Next, the owner insisted on having another month's rent up front, AND a security deposit. The kicker? We hadn't even signed the lease yet! We'd be out almost $5000 without a guarantee of even having it. Also, our agent insisted no security deposit was needed when we first saw the place. We argued to only pay 2 months if they really wanted us to have it that badly, but by now I was angry and losing interest. This is in no way the fault of the Apartment Guys, and our agent did try to argue down the deposit, but to no avail. After that, we didn't use them again. i am not sure if our agent wanted to keep showing us places, but it doesn't matter. When your notes are inaccurate, you can't open doors, and show us places that look like robbers attempted to get in, I couldn't help but lose my girlish excitement of finding an awesome place to live. Long story short, just go it alone. I enlisted the help of one of my dad's friends, and found a great apartment without using a service. read more

I think out of all the apartment services we have tried, the best experience was with Apartment Guys. And trust me, we have searched for apartments more than most people I think! Every single year, for 5 years, we have had to move. (Don't even get me started on all the horrible landlords and apartments we had to go through!) So we have had our fair share of Apartment People, Guys, Gals, Finders, Lookers, Seekers, Peepers- blah blah blah! And normally, they all show us the same kind of apartment. Dirty and/or cramped, and not at all what we said we were looking for. With Apartment People, we have walked into an apartment with a guy sitting in his underwear. With Apartment Finders, we have gone to places, that are listed but then when we get there are not for rent. We. Have. Seen. It. All. I promise you. And usually we are forced to sit around before hand in their offices and then are told that what we want for how much we are willing to pay is impossible. Not the Apartment Guys! The Guy we met with, Michael, was understanding to the fact that we were way up north and that's where we wanted to look for new apartments and it would be silly for us to drive all the way down to his office and then back up. So he offered to met us up by the first apartment. The first apartment however, was impossible to get into. The keypad was frozen and we ended up skipping that one. Sort of bummer of miscommunication with the apartment owners and the agency. He offered to drive us around to the next two apartments. He was very friendly and it truly seemed he had our best interest in mind. He listened to us on the phone and showed us two apartments that fit a decent amount of the criteria that we laid out. They were some of the nicest apartments we've ever seen. They were clean and empty and were very modern. They had lovely kitchens(with dishwashers, and microwaves and garbage disposals oh my!) and were of a decent size. And they had in unit laundry. And they allowed dogs, which is harder to find. Micheal wasn't pushy and understood that we wanted to take some time and really look at the apartment. He was also willing to help us work to get a price that would be more in our range. We ended up going with another apartment we found on our own because it fit more of our criteria and it was the right price. In general, I am not a fan of the apartment helper agencies. That is why I gave them 3 stars instead of 4. I rather find things on my own and usually have better luck when I do so. However, if I ever find myself needing help looking for a place again (I've got my fingers crossed we aren't going to have to move again soon) I know I won't bother with the rest of those apartment people finders. DISORGANIZED, UNPROFESSIONAL AND WILL IGNORE YOUR PRICE POINT. We called the Apartment Guys because we were looking for a 3 bedroom apartment in the Lakeview/Lincoln Park area and one of the websites we looked at listed an apartment we were interested in. We set up an appointment to see the apartment and a few others after I told them our budget range and criteria. Maggie called me back right away to confirm our appointment and at that point i reiterated to our our MAX budget. The day of the showing she showed up late (about 10 min) and led us to her two door car to show 3 people around and one of the handles was broken off. So picture three adults trying to squeeze into a two door car where one of the doors won't open not to mention the cigarette burns all over the dirty car. We get to our first listing and are very excited about it. She goes to unlock it and doesn't' have the correct combination for the lock box. So she takes us to the management group to get the spare key and shows us a couple showings near by and plans to go back to that first listing. In passing she mentions another place we may be interested in but it's outside our max budget. I told her our budget was very strict. All in all we were told we would see 5 places that day. After the third showing she tells us we are done. We asked about the other two including the first one where we had to go get the extra key. She said "oh those are outside your budget so we aren't going to them". Basically she had planned to show us these overpriced places all along until she found out we were strict about our budget. Other things to note was she was texting while driving the entire time. I really don't like going through any apartment finding service, but with how difficult it had been to find a place, we were desperate, so we tried out Apartment Guys - what a waste of time! First off, he got all our information... what we were looking for in a place, our price range, and the two different neighborhoods we were interested in. However, when we met with the guy, he showed us all of two places, both in only one of our preferred locations, and one of them being above our price range - how does this help us any?? So of course we crossed the one above our price range off the list, but we were still not too keen on the second place - but he was not happy to hear that we weren't interested. He immediately goes on about how we need to make a decision, and that we should sign the lease now before it goes. Needlesstosay, his pushiness completely turned me off from the entire situation. I however didn't want to give up just yet, so i gave him AMPLE opportunity to show us more places - i said things like, "well, we still would like to see some places up north if you have any availability" or "we're open to looking at more places next week" but to him, waiting until next week was absurd. instead, he still kept pushing us to sign on this one place. why couldn't he just give it up, and show us some other places?? when he finally realized we wouldn't budge, he quickly walked out and was like, "ok, well we'll keep in touch then" and left. i of course never heard from him again. ....... I seldom write a 1 star review, but when I do there is usually a story. In moving cross country from the West Coast, we consulted Apartment Guys to help us with limited visitation time to maximize choices / viewings. All seemed promising up until go time. Days before our visit it was mentioned that our information was lost. It was re-sent, and the agent promised she would have ~6 properties for us to view. When picked up, we immediately went to 2 buildings that met none of the stated residence goals. The agent was quite familiar with the property managers at these places. Next we went to see some smaller residences, but at the first one the door was locked. Not the agent's fault, but then she announced that there was really nothing else to show us and dropped us off. My issues are: 1) We asked to see Old Town apartments and saw none. If we wanted to look at places near the Mag Mile and upper Lincoln Park, we would have explicitly asked. 2) We busted our humps to get across the country (on a Holiday weekend) to be guided to 2 places when promised 6 viewings. 3) Knowing we were under a time crunch, there was not problem solving offered. The agent thought we should really just take 1 of the 2 places seen. I am concerned that kickbacks might have been involved between the agency and rental buildings. The story ends well, though. We walked around the desired neighborhood calling every rent sign phone number we saw and found the perfect place. My experience may have been unique, but I would actively steer others away from this place based on experience. read more

I was looking for a 1BR/BA in lincoln park in the price range of about $900-$1000. I called explaining that while I knew my price range was on the low end for Lincoln Park I was willing to compromise. Kathryn was my agent -she admitted to me right away that she wasn't able to find as many places for me to see (normally 6-7) she showed me 5. I figured it didn't matter since I was only moving into one. I was pleasantly surprise that all of the places she showed me were places I could see myself ideally living in and all were in my price range. I went with a 1BR/1BA with hardwood floors, updated kitchen w/ dishwasher, central heating and air, enclosed porch. It was listed at $995, but Kathryn suggested we could put in an offer of $925 since no utilities were included. We got the offer and I'm moving in one week! read more

Rick had an appointment with my roommate and myself one afternoon. After mistaking the address, I called the place letting them know I'd be late, but I guess I picked the wrong day to do so, since the agents were scrambling around in the office and didn't have a chance to begin driving us around until 20-30 minutes after we were supposed to start. I don't penalize them for this, but it would have been nice to know so I wasn't rushing to get there. The places he showed us matched all our criteria, and they did their job well driving us around and such. It just didn't happen to work out at that point in time. What was a little frustrating though was their insistence that a place we were interested in would be gone by the following afternoon, and the subsequent delay in sending over the lease application materials via email. We didn't receive them until almost 10pm that night. Overall very serviceable (3.5 stars?), but I think this service is geared towards people who are less picky and can check off all the boxes on their apartment list. None of the units we saw felt "right", but I can't say that this is their fault. read more
